- ilkeryoldas, on 10/10/2007, -13/+65finally a list worth reading - is digg getting back to its roots?
- yoshitomi, on 10/10/2007, -23/+60Great! 51 ways to show the world you're a talentless new-comer to the graphic designing world. Seriously, don't follow any of these out-dated tutorials unless you just want to create graphics to be used on your geocities homepage.
- Angostura, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Wow, there are an awful lot of smug gits in this thread, aren't there.
Some of these effects are just fine if you want to design the local playgroup's Halloween poster or whatever. Chill out. - thesergie, on 10/10/2007, -12/+32I'm a graphic designer and I think these effects are freaking cheesy as hell. I'd rather go to hell and eat cheese than hire someone who uses these lame effects.
- Samburger, on 10/10/2007, -9/+28Some of the cheesiest photoshop effects I've ever seen. Graphic designers, don't use these.
- wbbb617, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21As a relative newbie in web design and graphics, if these are truly horrible designs, could you either elaborate beyon "these are old, lame, and blah", or what would you do instead
- thethresh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16OK know-it-alls, how about linking a little love for those of us newbies who don't have all your prescient knowledge and abilities?
- m00n1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16If you just use them rote, then you are talantless. If you use them to learn new photoshop tricks, to work out new approaches to treating text, to stand on the shoulders of, well, not giants, but you get the idea, then great. I think this is a good post.
- LowROI, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Those sure taper off at the end in terms of quality...
- GirlsDesignToo, on 10/10/2007, -8/+21Wow theres even screenshots of the text effects.
- arcooke, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Correction, 90% of other designers would laugh at you for using effects like those, not the client. If you've ever actually dealt with a client, you should know they don't know jack ***** about design.
- Elliuotatar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13And yet you see these on every movie box and poster, and on all the drink menus at chain restaurants. I think these are exactly what your client wants to see. Flashy, eye catching, and clean. What would you suggest as alternative font effects? Plain black text in Helvetica?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14300+ people clicked digg, that's how you ***** retard
- louiemantia, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Yes, every designer should see this as to make sure they NEVER do this kind of thing... these are hideous text effects.
- fragsta, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10They're cheesy, sure. You wouldn't use them for a business client's website, no! But what if you wanted to have a bit of fun messing around with fake film posters or a themed website for a game or something? You don't have to be uptight and avoid anything other than contemporary styles like the plague just because you're a professional graphic designer.
- orukabir, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12Photoshop Text Effects: 51 Text Effect Tutorials Every Designer Must Avoid Like A ***** Plague.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I agree! The "*****" theory has reached Digg, too :)
- mediamanbkk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I wish some of the people that comment on here will accept that not everyone that reads Digg is a professional Designer. These tutorials will obviously of great benefit to newbies and of course us "non-designers" hence it has been "Dugg" lots of times.
- shavenlunatic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8would be infinitely quicker if you had an infinite number of monkeys with an infinite number of typewriters :)
- NoShameInc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8duggmirror got it
http://duggmirror.com/design/Photoshop_Text_Effects_51_Text_Effect_Tutorials_Every_Designer_Should_See/ - unknownsoldierX, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11*****. You're saying that if you knew nothing about Photoshop, or even new the basics of using layer that you could create effects like these within 15 minutes? Learn to use layers, blending, affective use of filters, and choose the right combination of colors all within 15 minutes?
You're a loose-lipped, trash talking moron. Or, maybe a graphical design prodigy. I'd bet $1000 on the former. - Robubie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6or maybe monkey Shakespeare!
- samfishercell, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I believe that right there nulled your opinion...
- joel2600, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5i'll post a top ten list of why digg is not getting back to it's roots on my ad-filled blog and let you know
- triplehelix, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7dugg mirror got most of it.
http://duggmirror.com/design/Photoshop_Text_Effects_51_Text_Effect_Tutorials_Every_Designer_Should_See/ - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5And most of them don't even have a design job
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You're right on most of them, but this is the most realistic fire I have ever seen: http://www.photoshoptechniques.com/texp/fireptk.php
- danwallace, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Everyone's very impressed. You da man. You must be hung like a gorilla.
- brandg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3In my experience, when hundreds of "experts" say that something is a bad idea because
A) the idea is really old,
B) you have to go to college to learn what we do, and
C) we don't have to give you reasons for why it's bad,
then generally it's a good idea.
Am I going to use these for all the text on my page? No.
Would I use them for a title page graphic? Maybe.
Could it give me helpful tools that might teach me how to use Photoshop better? Yes. - orukabir, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Also, good typo doesn't need ***** effects. =]
- JohnnyRad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Maybe this will clear things up. Imagine a post that said, "51 awesome websites every web designer should use" and then the links were just really bad 90's geocities and myspace pages. This post is like that x 200.
- bradleyland, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Snazzy? Interesting. That's the same word my clients use every time they're about to describe something hideous they want on their new website ;)
- Fracture98, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Wonderful. Now the chick at work that sends out "donuts in the coffee room" emails will be using 51 fonts.
- samfishercell, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Really? Because I thought the lack of quality stormed out of the gate like a finely trained racing stallion.
zing! - dennisplucinik, on 10/10/2007, -9/+12how ever the hell does this get 300+ diggs is beyond me.
- robotderek42, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Here we go. These are a few from my personal library...
Thinking with Type: A Critical Guide for Designers, Writers, Editors, & Students (Ellen Lupton)
…covers the basics and good chunk of typographic history.
Making and Breaking the Grid: A Graphic Design Layout Workshop (Timothy Samara)
…how to set up a grid based design and then shred it to pieces and be free form.
How To Be a Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul (Adrian Shaughnessy and Stefan Sagmeister)
…self explanatory.
1,000 Graphic Elements: Details for Distinctive Designs (Wilson Harvey)
1,000 Type Treatments (Wilson Harvey)
…the company that prints this (ROCKPORT) has some of the best "collection books" I've ever seen. A lot to absorb.
MAGAZINE LIST: Print, HOW, back issues of Emigré, older issues of Raygun, beautiful/DECAY, eye magazine.
I'm not at home, but these are some off the top of my head. Amazon is a great place to find expensive books for cheap. Also Ebay.
Also, reading in a bookstore is not illegal. There are no "hard and fast" rules in design. There are traditional, trendy, and faux pas aspects. If you need proof compare David Carson, Stefan Sagmeister, Paul Rand, and Art Chantry. Four very different styles, but all respected. (Also see: Marian Bantjes, Elliot Earls, Rudy VanderLands, Pentagram, Kenneth FitzGerald, Helicopter, Martin Venezky, Chip Kidd, Paula Scher, 4AD Design)
Anything else? Just ask. (Where are my other "fellow designers" backing me up?) - Meep3D, on 10/10/2007, -2/+590% of them suck, which is true, but they provide a good starting point for people who want to learn Photoshop to be able to create something snazzy and to see various techniques that they can use. Everyone has to start somewhere.
- PerceptionTwin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i found some of the tutorials very helpful.. even if you dont use them on text, they help you learn some of the things photoshop can do.
- evilregis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Dafont.com is another great site. You can put in any text and it will render the font using the text you provide.
- JohnnyRad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Cool man, good for you. I'm talking about from a design perspective, theyre poor designs, aka there are much better things you can do. Like i said in another comment, if you want to see good design go to your local bookstore and pick up a magazine called Print. Print has some good examples you can learn from that aren't flame text or people hitting every filter they can find. Is that better than trying to make an analogy?
- joel2600, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2yeah, it's almost like they put things in order from best to worst and then numbered them accordingly.
- 2ndrookie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I agree... you can find some more up to date tutorials online. These graphics were cool, I dunno... may be 5-7 years ago? Sorry dude...
- robotderek42, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Agree
- Meep3D, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2And finally a practical use for the liquify tool that isn't deforming your friends faces!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Samfishface just got OWNED
- tizz66, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Fair enough. I understand it's not that simple to write a tutorial for good design.
So, got any 'finished' examples of well-designed text? No need for a tutorial, just want to know what, in your opinion, is well designed :) Or is that not simple either...? - HautePie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Its text handling is vector and has been since v5 I think. If the text was a minor part of an image that was already rater based I'd might just stick to PS. Also some type treatments are more suited to a raster format.
- joel2600, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4i'm not a graphic designer and i don't know how to do professional text effects and i found this tutorial informative and helpful for someone who can't afford to hire a graphic designer
- Unclickable, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Why stop there. Make your text alive http://yuxt.com/artist/Typography
- richashby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Completely with you on this. I fully expected to see page curls and lens flare.
Less is definitely more. -
