PICTURE: Geeky Girlfriend Makes A World Of Warcraft Themed B-Day Cake
episteme.arstechnica.com — "My a good friend makes kick-ass cakes as a hobby. Last year she started dating my old roomate who plays World of Warcraft a fair amount around his job; for christmas she aquired a "WoW stole my boyfriend" t-shirt. She is good-natured about his love of Warcraft, however, as shown by the birthday cake she made him three weeks ago"

- GraceMolloy, on 10/12/2007, -12/+32Seconded, can I hear a third?
- kristov, on 10/12/2007, -5/+72Third! Actually give her to me, I play WoW excessively and all I get is heartache from my wife.
Oh and my wife DOES NOT BAKE! - p2502, on 10/12/2007, -4/+42fourthed.
and fifthed by my girlfriend.
also @ kristov . learn to bake, it's friggin easy. and it's a useful skill when shopping for your next wife. - counterplex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21sixth'ed! Pop the question and don't even worry about anything else. The only thing that'll make this situation better is if she's a gamer herself.
And baking really isn't too bad - kinda like coding ... with flour, eggs and flavoring :) - Thuktun, on 10/12/2007, -3/+125@kristov "Oh and my wife DOES NOT BAKE!"
Must resist urge to ask if she blends. - Outdoor83, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2See, here's the weird part: I'm a guy. I am *not* into MMO gaming. I played Quake back in the day pretty hardcore, but I haven't gotten into anything since then.
Now, my wife plays GuildWars all the time. Kind of strange, and I give her some grief about it sometimes, but I try to go with the fact that she just does it because it's her thing. - labmouse42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Meh..
I got my fiance' to play WoW with me. Now she plays more than me. It's actually kinda wierd....

- brianbennett, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22She's a keeper.
- Pikachelsea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Too bad she probably weighs 2 tons and eats one of those cakes every day for breakfast. (See, no pics have been provided so we just have to assume the worst)
But yeah, marrying someone based on their ability to make an unbelievably nerdy cake... great idea... I guess.
- Pikachelsea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Too bad she probably weighs 2 tons and eats one of those cakes every day for breakfast. (See, no pics have been provided so we just have to assume the worst)
- jlebrech, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3Girls like guys with hobbies!!
- saikhan, on 10/12/2007, -22/+14Hobbies like sitting in front of the computer drinking Mountain Dew, farting, burping, and screaming on occasion for six hours a day?
I think not. - Nitelite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16@Saikhan
I hate to break the news, but guys (and girls) can do all of those things away from a computer as well.
/ontopic This cake looks awesome. - shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@saikhan
if that was acually someone's hobby that might be entertaining.
- saikhan, on 10/12/2007, -22/+14Hobbies like sitting in front of the computer drinking Mountain Dew, farting, burping, and screaming on occasion for six hours a day?
- disrupter, on 10/12/2007, -6/+40My gf is mad whenever Im on the computer for too long :(
- sladek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+59you're not the only one
- NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+103Yeah, your girlfriend hates when I just sit in front of the PC and don't pay attention to her.
- jmeeter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Yup, I'm in the same boat.
- dudu78, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14same here ;-(
- endgames, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16She's not the only one.
- xobecide, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24My gf doesn't bake me a cake (queue dream sequence) but she does fetch me Arizona Iced Teas and hot pockets from time to time. That's as close as I'm going to get without seeking a girlfriend in the cake-design business.
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+54xobe - Does she also fetch the portable toilet for you and tell you you are a "big boy"? :p
- theuber1337, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Well you know when your girlfriend is there you should probably *do* things with her.. just an observation.
Generally when a girl and the computer is being used.. we do things that can be fun for all; like funny videos, interesting articles on digg, tv shows, music, flash games, and hardcore pornography. - iikoizy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I'm pretty sure every girl on here, including this one, just rolled her eyes at you. I dated a guy who played WoW. Never again...
- widoka, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6@iikoizy
I didn't roll my eyes. My boyfriend is like that too, but with Oblivion. So you know what I did? I got Oblivion too. For a while he was asking ME to stop playing so much. It's not like the game isn't fun, maybe you should see what he's so interested in. - Pikachelsea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@widoka:
Congrats on settling for being a lower priority than a computer game. Real healthy relationship you got there.
And lol at all you idiot guys. "MY GIRLFRIEND GETS UPSET WHEN I IGNORE HER ALL DAY AND SIT ON MY ARSE ON THE COMPUTER FOR HOURS AND HOURS, I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I guess they must have no self-esteem either if they're your girlfriends. - Feebriel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@iikoizy
Not only did most girls roll their eyes at that, some guys did, as well. (Nice FLCL avatar, by the way.)
But yeah, back to the cake, it looks VERY well done. The detail is really something. I'd be more interested in pictures of that cake being made, though. I'm not into World of Warcraft, but I can tell an awesome cake when I see it. - widoka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ pikachelsea
forgive me for not leaving my boyfriend because he enjoys doing something. i think the self-esteem level is shown through the fact that I don't feel threatened by the game.
- Snipex, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4Whats with all the cakes? Wheres the Windows Vista one...With the security pop ups. I would use transparent frosting :D
- pegothejerk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+158Useless without pictures of the girlfriend. Could be an icing slinging robot he built in spare time.
- violentvinyl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+48Icing slinging is a man's job.
- SniperX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Nah.. WoW players don't have free time

if you can trace a picture u can make a kick-ass cake. It's like all those fat rich girls, " I love you make cookies and cakes." Wow, do something that actually takes effort fatty.- Scrib, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33***** off, I doubt you could make anything near as good as that, there is much more that goes into this than "tracing".
Retard. - cracker42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25I'm sure you're just trolling, because anybody with half a brain can tell you that making that cake is significantly harder than tracing a picture.

- SpectralSounds, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7Considering it will just be consumed in a few seconds by the thing in the basement. His mom, err I mean girlfriend put far too much effort into that cake.
Maybe it was to lure him OUT of the basement. Ok, good enough for me.- walster06, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1who would have there computer in their basement....... don't they have bedrooms
- widoka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2*sigh* some people just don't get it
- luvlyssa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+69Cute... I'm a girl (no really I am). I'm chubby (but not "fat") and I... play WoW! Shocking! I know! I've never lacked for dates or boyfriends... so for all of you who say she doesn't exist or is fat. Is it possible? yeah... but there are a lot of girl WoWers. Guys far out number us. Even before I was a geek I didn't care if my guy played video games (actually that's probably why I enjoy games now!)
My call? The girl probably does exist... cute or not will depend on your own personal opinion. The last three guys I've dated have been anything BUT gamers. I actually wish I did have a gamer boyfriend. Then we could do something "together" that was fun for us instead of the typical dinner/movies/bowling/whatever.
I love geeks :)- Rtothe2, on 10/12/2007, -44/+8Translation = You're a dude...
- TheEgghead, on 10/12/2007, -50/+13Quick tip.. don't ever say "I'm chubby (but not fat)".. You're fat.. just admit it - maybe then you can work on not being fat.
- luvlyssa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35No I'm not fat:) I would admit it if I were. I was fat. obese whatever. I'm now chubby. And even then... just by my standards.
- crossmr, on 10/12/2007, -21/+1You're going to get flooded with pms now ;)
- tonton2012, on 10/12/2007, -40/+10Chubby but not fat?
pfft!
Chubby IS fat. If you have more fat in your body needed to sustain yourself during short periods of starvation then you are fat. - LaSepultura, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17And we love you.
- tonton2012, on 10/12/2007, -28/+5HAH! Got dugg down by the fat WoW nerds. Figures.
- walster06, on 10/12/2007, -17/+3How can fat WoWers call a girl fat!!!! is this some type of new geek technique of scoring chicks.
even though she probably is fat!!!!!! - Mirag3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+40is there a reason why everyone needs to be a dick to every random person? Jesus Christ, call me old fashioned (im 17) but have you guys ever heard of a little chivalry? Treat girls (and people in general) nicely and maybe one will talk to you one day.
P.S. Stupid people don't count - mostly because I don't want to talk to stupid people and thus am willing to verbally massacre them.- Rikushix, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1Good god, thank you for saying that man. Gives us 17-19 year olds an example to show that not all of us are complete dicks.
- aelias, on 10/12/2007, -15/+5"I actually wish I did have a gamer boyfriend."
And you can't wrangle one up?
Fat. - Hoov, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Mirag3, one day you'll learn that chivalry is dead and women killed it.
- offwithyourtv, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16@ luvlyssa
I'm a girl, too, and it annoys me how some of these guys on digg (presumably younger guys who wouldn't know how to deal with a woman anyway) tend to assume all female geeks must be fat, ugly, actually male, or just nonexistent. These guys are just being jackasses, because in real life they'd likely never say things like that to your face, mostly because those who are immature enough to say such a thing probably have no room to talk about others being fat or ugly. I am not a WoW fan, but when Spore comes out, my fiance and I will probably never leave the house except to go to work. I myself am not fat or even chubby, not that it would necessarily be a bad thing if I were. That doesn't automatically make someone unattractive. I've seen my share of ugly skinny girls as well as cute chubby ones. Some digg boys just need to grow up. Yeah, the overused joke "OMG someone on digg has a girlfriend??!!!1" is still mildly funny, but once it gets down to generalizing all geek girls and saying hot geek chicks can't possibly exist, it's really no more accurate than saying all geek guys are fat and ugly and live with their moms. I'm sure some of them are. But sexy geeks do exist among both sexes.
@ Hoov
Chivalry isn't dead. I've experienced it firsthand. It's just that women who still deserve it these days are fairly uncommon, to tell you the truth. Therefore the men out there who still understand the concept of chivalry are rarely given a chance to use it on someone worthwhile.- Rikushix, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1That was amazingly well said.
- cpbrown, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2what the hell isn't sexy about fat?
- offwithyourtv, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4@ cpbrown
I know, right? ***** and ass are made of fat. Brain synapses are insulated with fat. And if you've got T & A + brains....there is more than likely at least a little bit of sexy there. - multipotential, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I actually know lots of cute girls (in real life) that play WoW. Cute gamer/geek girls DO exist. That's not even the point, really. If you see an unattractive girl in real life, you generally don't run up to her and tell her she's ugly. Welcome to the internet, eh?
- labmouse42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Pah,
The image of just fat, ugly women playing WoW is as untrue as the image of only fat, ugly men playing WoW. - mmarchin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I love how you said "I love geeks" and their only response was "you must be fat". What a bunch of idiots. No wonder so many girls are discouraged from entering geekdom. And us geeky girls feel like outcasts.
For more on the topic of women being judged solely on their appearance, I suggest "The Beauty Myth".
Really, would all of you want people to say stuff like that to your sister or your mom? - bilangew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"But sexy geeks do exist among both sexes. "
I agree, but its really uncommon, isnt it? Ive always thought "Sexy geeks are geeks disguised" :)

- graemedeacon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+61My gf actually plays more WoW than I do. She has never made me a cake but she did buy me a WoW hoodie for Christmas and she makes me tacos sometimes.
I'm satisfied.- Thuktun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20My wife and I specifically haven't tried WoW because we know we'll both get hooked and forget to do things, like eat.
- endgames, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I think this is a cry for help.
Awesome job on the cake though. I don't think I would have the patience to attempt something so grand on something so temporary. It's like an ice sculpture. - snurfle, on 10/12/2007, -27/+3I just don't get it.
After six hours over the past 3 days, this is what I've done:
Appear in the "world", die instantly for no known reason.
Appear in a graveyard, spend 3 minutes running toward your corpse, resurrect, die instantly. Repeat ad infinitum.
At what point does it become fun?!?!?!- Smut666, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10Let me guess. You're that lvl 10 guy in STV I see dying all the time? Get back to the beginner area newbert.
- snurfle, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Uhmmm... no.
Level 1. Just started. Can't "go" anywhere, I drop dead within (literally) 5 seconds of resurrecting.
I haven't had a chance to actually go to any area other than the path I'm on.
Do I just have to keep doing this in 5-second increments to make it to a beginners area? - luvlyssa, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Try WoW forums. Stay on the path where ever you are. Level 1s are started in areas where the other characters (or things to kill) are level 1 or 2.... sounds like you just don't know what you're doing.
Also... if you've died a ton your ... armor (or lack thereof) is probably not going to help you at all. kill level 1 animals and get quests so you can get money. then go to a merchant (cloth armor weapons) that can fix what little you have... you'll do fine. - snurfle, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Meh.
Same advice as from the forums...
Look for people with exclamation points (Have seen no other people yet.)
Go to a church (Have seen no buildings yet.)
Look for something to kill (Can't take 3 steps without falling over and being told "you are dead".)
Boring, overrated, pointless waste of time and money. - darkstar949, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2@snurfle - Sounds like you just don't know what you are doing, or a player killer that likes giving newbies a hard time is hanging out in the area. Try playing on a PvE server for awhile so that you can get the basic controls down. Also, if things are as bad as you claim, a screen shot of your starting area is useful for us.
- snurfle, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1"a screen shot of your starting area"
It's a forest.
With a path.
And nothing else. - darkstar949, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Are you playing as a night elf? They have start in the woods with a giant tree as the starting point.
- snurfle, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Nope.
Human. Level 1 Warrior. - snurfle, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1No point tying up the Digg system with this.
$40 bucks for a lesson learned.
I'd already given up on it, with all the barely helpful assistance I've gotten from the forums, and the 75-100 trips from the cemetery back to my corpse accounting for at least 90% of my "game play", I believe it's just a good way to kill six hours while getting frustrated. - Price, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4"Look for people with exclamation points (Have seen no other people yet.)
Go to a church (Have seen no buildings yet.)
Look for something to kill (Can't take 3 steps without falling over and being told "you are dead".)"
You've either got some serious problems with your game or you're *****. My money's on the second one.
Seen no buildings? There's a building right in front of you as soon as you make a warrior and get past the starting video, along with a guy who has a yellow exclamation mark over him. If you can't see them then your game is royally *****, but I doubt it is. What you're saying is just so ridiculous, it really is.
If you ever see an enemy, right click it. Maybe press your heroic strike key (2 or 3, I don't know what it's default is with new chars)... It really isn't that hard. - alceria, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Clearly you haven't killed enough boars yet.
- MaXiMuM32, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Those pics made my mouth water. I'm craving cakes now...

- jmreid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Drop out. That school sucks.
- bonyicecream, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You are soooo not geeky enough.
http://flickr.no-ip.biz
just replace www.flickr.com in a URL with flickr.no-ip.biz and it should work. Redirection site. Just get an account at no-ip.com and then use dnsstuff.com or command prompt or any other pinging site to ping the website you want to access. Then copy the IP and go back to no-ip.com. login, click create host, change the IP to the one you found by pinging the site, and name it whatever you want. It's free.
Note: it won't work on many sites, because many sites aren't viewable via their IP.
- REBELinBLUE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Am I the only one who finds it funny that time and time again, whenever there is a topic about WoW we get the same replies. Stating that WoW players have no lives; I have to question the people who post this stuff because seriously if your life is so fantastic what the hell are you doing trolling on digg?
- youngandwise, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26@REBELinBLUE
Some people, have EXTREMELY slow / boring office jobs, and watching people argue over mostly insignificant issues passes the time.. :) - REBELinBLUE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Good point, I am bored at work right now, why do you think I'm here ;)
- MrRockabilly, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Have you noticed that this story is on the front page? Have you also noticed that most comments have been made since it hit the front page? You sir are an idiot . . . unless people can "Troll" the front page.
- REBELinBLUE, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13What has the fact that it is on the front page got to do with anything? The location of a thread makes no differences as to whether or not a post/reply is inflammatory, insulting, incorrect, inaccurate or absurd ;)
But thanks for calling me an idiot, I now feel like I belong on digg - tonton2012, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Some of us post while waiting for code to compile or a new branch on CVS/subversion to be checked out.
- violentvinyl, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3"I have to question the people who post this stuff because seriously if your life is so fantastic what the hell are you doing trolling on digg?"
Thank you Mr Pot.
Stereotypically, WoW players play until they either wet themselves or die of malnourishment. If you can't see the humor in that... never mind. - REBELinBLUE, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Mr pot ah? Did I say my life was any better? I don't recall doing so.
Oh well stereotypes, that is fine then. Because we all love stereotypes ;) Just trying to point out that if similar comments were made about mactards or other popular stereotypes here at digg it would be burried in the blink of an eye. - violentvinyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Did I say my life was any better?"
It was hypocritical because you're trolling too.
The thing you have to remember about stereotyping on Digg is that the minority will always be buried. It's not that the jokes about the stereotypical iFanboy are less funny than the ones about the stereotypical WoW players, it's just that there are more iFanboys to bury them.
For the record, I'm about as geeky as they come, but I can also laugh at myself. It's a good skill to have.
