- jmontes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+99It doesn't. Instead it stays in one place and moves the universe around it.
- Metaridley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+86You could fit a lot of snakes on that thing.
- Oakes, on 10/12/2007, -6/+90Russia also has the biggest submarine and China has the biggest dam. There's something about communism that creates an obsession for...bigness.
- proliance, on 10/12/2007, -2/+69Yes, gravity.
- Dantetheinferno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+59In case anyone wanted a comparison between the Airbus and other large planes...

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29Are you retarded?

I have one problem with flickr: they let users upload files smaller than 1600x1200. - N080dy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23In other news, did you know that if your hand is bigger than your face you have cancer?

It's part of a Russian tradition of manufacturing in excessive proportions which predates communism itself but carried over into the communist era. Popular examples being

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23Perhaps they're compensating for something here...
- jerryparid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Since the max T.O. weight is 660 Tons and payload is 275 Tons, the plane is 385 tons. It is amazing that human can make hundreds of tons of metal fly in midair above the clouds.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16The Spruce Goose still had the larger wingspan. Nutty American industrialists ftw!
- camper8080, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15You like the pictures? Take a look at the video of this plane taking off!

Best quote EVER. - sannm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I've heard that soldiers sometimes play baseball inside of large cargo planes on empty return trips...I didn't believe it until I saw how huge this particular one was...dayum
- Koray, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13No. It was created and used to carry rockets and space-craft. Much like our Airbus A300-600ST, which we use to move large aeronautic parts for NASA (at least, mostly).
- evilspoons, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I saw one of these (or an older, similar one) at an airshow like 15 years ago (making me, oh, six or so) but even back then the sheer size of it impressed me. Walking down the center of the cargo deck was nothing like any other airplane I've seen since, it's like being in a tunnel.
- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9'This plane is even more insane, it was made to care 750 tanks - H-4 Herculues'
I think you read that wrong, the Spruce Goose was built to fit 750 TROOPS. It's now housed at the Evergreen Aviation Museum in Oregon where you can see it with a SR-71 parked under it's wing. Highly recommended to anyone who's interested aviation.
http://www.sprucegoose.org/ - Netherlander, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14You could pack the Canadian military into that thing!
- GaffleSnipe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8The first flight in history by the Wright Brothers was 120ft, so this plane (276 ft long) is more than twice as long as the first flight ever.
- axiomata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Another interesting giant plane, the one-of-a-kind Boeing 747 "Dreamlifter": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_747_Large_Cargo_Freighter

- mackoid101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I know it's all about thrust lift and drag, but sometimes I just look at these things and can't imagine how they get off the ground. Impressive!
- robotexplorer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6imagine blindfolding the wright brothers and taking them to a modern day airport, they'd go nuts.
- ledmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8The way of the future... The way of the future...
- oddmanout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i've actually seen this plane, a couple years ago it had stopped at the airport in my town to carry 12 of these giant flat boats to somewhere in africa or something, i forget exactly... but the point being, we got to watch it take off.... it used the WHOLE runway and was extremely loud... it rumbled everything around us... and we were watching from far away behind a fence at the road.
- sharper130, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Get a better idea of the size, aerial imagery of it in a Ukraine airport:

Did you notice anything similar about all "these planes" you've been on?
There's only one in service... - Hollywood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You forgot about the Jet A-1 weight.
- schwit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can it get bigger? An-325: Proposal for an enlarged variant of the An-225 with an additional engine mounted on each inboard pylon and able to carry an increased payload, proposed primarily as a possible launch platform for Russian or foreign space vehicles.
http://www.buran-energia.com/mriya/mriya-desc.php - preved, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Because, it was developed when USSR was equal to Russia.
Ukraine as something separated from Russia was invented by Germans during WWI and as independent state it is functioning since 1992.
AN-225 has been built before 1992. - pawperso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I flew to Iraq in one of these, not built for passengers at all.
And I swear the russian crew were drunk. - AReallyGoodName, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well gee sctechguy are you arguing that the Thunderbird 2 isn't real or something?
- statikuz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here's a gallery of the actual landing in Vegas: http://www.ur-82060.com/shell.phtml
The linked picture is cool, but the transformer delivery was about 3 years ago. I live in Nevada and there was an article about it in the Vegas paper. It's in the Review Journal archives, but you have to pay to read the full article:
Date: April 30, 2004
Author: John Gurzinski
PHOTO: Getting An Eyeful Of World"s Largest Aircraft
JOHN GURZINSKI/REVIEW-JOURNAL The world's largest aircraft draws a crowd to watch its Thursday landing at McCarran International Airport. People gathered at the Sunset Road viewing area to see the Antonov Airlines AN-225, which has a payload capacity of 250 tons and a wingspan of nearly 300 feet. The Russian aircraft, delivering a transformer for a local energy company, flew from Istanbul, Turkey, to Palma, Spain, to Lajes, Portugal, to Bangor, Maine, before landing in Las Vegas... - atcdev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nice, but it's no Thunderbird 2 :
Specifications: STOL/VTOL Heavy Transport Aircraft
Wingspan: 57.0m
Length: 75.5m
Height: 18.0m
Top Speed: 5 000mph
Power Plant: Atomic Pile
Propulsion: Turbojet, RAMjet, Rocket
Armament: Surface to Air Missiles
Crew: One, Virgil Tracy
Bigger, faster @ VTOL! ;-) - sctechguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ atcdev: Uh, hate to burst your bubble, there, but your claim suggests that that plane is doing almost 7 times the speed of sound. The X-15 is the fastest manned aircraft around (that we know of) and its top speed is only Mach 6.72.
- furyg3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The An-225's first flight was on December 21 1988.
Ukraine declared independance from the Soviet Union on August 24, 1991 (finalized in December of that year).
So you're wrong and mostly wrong (since it would not be incorrect to call something made in the USSR "Russian")
Also your spelling is atrocious. - jakeblat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How do you get someone / something banned from digg?
- theredbicycle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2But where do you keep your weed?
Oh, I don't have one of those... - frase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I saw an AN-124 at BNE once. It was freaking monstrous, but the 225 eclipses the 124. I would love to see one of these in real life.
- Nateanite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2OMG it's a cruise missile!!
- profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It needs 3500m (just over 2 miles) of runway to take off, fully loaded. That's ridiculous.
- createthezerone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's a HUGE plane but can it seat this many passengers? http://www.2flashgames.com/anfh2198f23lradf/flash/f-Airbus-A380-3188.jpg
