- saikhan, on 10/12/2007, -9/+42Allow me to share with you the wisdom of this "sickening fundamentalist" religion:
Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.
Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.
But after observation and analysis, when you find that something that agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live to fulfill it. - theworldisround, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31Stop being an intolerant prick.
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30If THAT sickens you, you're pretty sheltered.
- shifty2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27I have personally been to Nara and seen the cleaning process... its amazing how clean they get it!!
Buddha's belly is a bitch... so much bellybutton lint xD - cybermort, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Buddhism may well be the only sensible religion in the world, unlike all the other major religions in doesn't lead to a fundamentalist ideology.
- Silencer7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24guys, don't feed the trolls, just digg down and move on
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17My wife is Buddhist and I guess by proxy I'm a little Buddhist as well. It's the world's most peaceful non-religion. Buddhism isn't a doctrine, it's a path of spirituality. There is no Buddhist bible. There are only a few precepts to Buddhism, and the main one is to try and relieve suffering in the world, in your immediate surroundings and beyond. Another is to do things in moderation. Drinking and smoking weed is ok (if that's your thing) as long as it's a once-in-awhile type of thing that doesn't bring suffering to yourself or those around you. The morality ingrained in Buddhist thought is so simple and friendly it's no wonder that Americans are now turning to it seeking insight and comfort on a daily basis.
Point to a map. Wherever you find violence, you will not see a Buddhist. - theshiz892, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15@moralcompass
even by your name i can tell you are some insensitive prick who thinks he knows everything about morality and only YOUR religion is right no matter what anyone else says like some ***** - chip0wa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You don't really know how big that thing is until you see it. It's kind of creepy when they have the doors open so he can peek out at you while the deer around the park are attacking you on the way inside.
- transcendz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Digging down because you don't understand is the best proof of ignorance and selfishness, isn't it ?
- baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13moralcompass you have no idea what Buddhists believe...
read this and educate yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhism - theoristbj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I've been to this temple which is impressive itself, it being the largest wooden building in the world. But when you step inside, the giant Buddha is pretty awe-inspiring. What I found weird was the gift shop near the entrance selling charms, trinkets and souvenirs which doesn't seem to fit in with it being a temple and all.
- kazuhima, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@littlegreenlzrd
haha what a joke. id choose buddhism over whatever your religion is, any day. - transcendz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9@wwwdot1jesdotus : Buddha isn't a god, he's a man who followed a path and teached people how to stop suffering. All the ceremonies around his statue are made to show respect to his teachings and great understanding of human nature. Maybe a little search on Wikipedia would have cleared some ignorance from your post...
- cybe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't think Siddhartha Gautama is too happy about the idolatrous "buddhism" religion, just like Christ isn't too happy about the idolatrous "Christianity" religion (Second Commandment) which does the opposite of what Christ taught.
"Buddha is NOT a name, it is a descriptive title and means "The Awakened; Anointed or Enlightened One", which is exactly the same meaning as the word "Messiah" has in Hebrew - "Christos" in Greek - "Christ" in English, which are also NOT names but are, like the word Buddha, descriptive titles, as is the word Jesus, which simply means Saviour...." http://jahtruth.net/buddha.htm - Prototek, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8We're digging him down because 99% of people here have no idea what that means.
- kflasch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Haha. I've been to Nara myself. After buying those biscuits, the deer certainly didn't bow to me! They rushed me and nipped at me until I gave them all up. Some of them are mean... but they certainly are intelligent. It's an amazing place.
- marinist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5My GF works for a Japanese Buddhist order in their philanthropy office. I don't think "fundamentalist" accurately describes this religion. That said, I have noted their overtly religious people have similar hangups--whether they're Christian or any other religion. (I'm only speaking for this particular order, which I'll leave un named).
- Xinareiaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5They have ferocious attack deer? I want some!
- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Been to Nara too. It's one of those prime examples of nature and urban development somehow coexisting. It is illegal to kill a deer over there whether by accident or not. The deer are, however, somewhat intelligent. I've seen them stop at a crosswalk and walk at appropriate times (the crosswalks have tones). You can buy these special cookies which if you hold out to the deers, they would bow to you before you feed them. If that's not your thing, then go there for the gardens and temples.
- transcendz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You're right, of course, but some people need this idolatry and we must cope with it.
"A thousand monks, a thousand religions" -- Siddharta Gautama - dreadful, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I dugg this but why did he put it under technology/design it has nothing to do with it
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I'm sure the buddha enjoys the cleaning, keeps everyone mindful =)
- transcendz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@moralcompass : maybe the north pole has started to move, or is your post a koan ?
@littlegreenizrd : every religion, every culture has its chants. Every religion, every culture has its limits, and sometimes people do wrong things in the name of one of them, but that's just the way it is, you know.
Saying "My religion is right, yours is wrong. Live with it." is completely fondamentalist. No true buddhist would say this, and that's what's turning your post against you. - jimmiejaz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11We need to know what Right View is. The Pali term for Right View is Samma ditthi (Sanskrit Samyag Drsti). Ditthi is a view and Samma is ‘right’ or ‘correct’ or even ‘perfect’. Wrong view is Miccha ditthi. Right view is based upon the Buddha’s Enlightenment experience.
Why are you people digging aliasing down? - wwwdot1jesdotus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, it was a joke, but thanks for being the PC police.
(And BTW, he apparently never figured out that pesky obesity problem). - Lobster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In Yinyana Buddhism we sometimes sanctify statues by sprinkling earth over them or leaving them to Mother Nature.

- metaphysical, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Nice! I lived an hour from this guy. (in Osaka)
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Has anyone else played Red Ninja enough to immediately be reminded of that one pain in the ass level?
- KenOh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Research the etymology of Bushido and you'll find that the word itself practically contains Zen Buddhism.
Look, guys, I didn't devote my life studies for East Asian culture to come out ignorant. You are trying to defend a tiny smudge on this religion while you're completely missing the point. - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ken.... you're thinking of Bushido... not Buddhism.
- KenOh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Right, because Zen Buddhism, a philosophy that lead some warriors to disembowel themselves with a ritual knife, couldn't possibly have contributed to the idea of killing yourself by crashing your plane into the enemy.
Do I even need to add the /sarcasm tag here? - loganhuddleston, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3although i have never experienced the cleaning, i have also been. its an amazing sight to see.
- alexerde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I actually Went to Nara myself, I managed to snap some hot deer on deer action that randomly took place in front of me.
- Ruhtar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ironic isn't it transcednz, people acting out of ignorance on a subject of enlightenment.
- bebop717, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5@ wwwdot1jesdotus
The Buddha is in our mind, what you see is just a statue. - hntgli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1littlegreenlzrd
"My religion is right, yours is wrong. Live with it."
You are a bad influence on your religion - harrydirty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1worth going all ong-bak over
- cheekybastard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What is "idolatrous Christianity" ? Is that placing a graven image of the Ten Commandments on the steps of a state capitol building?
- bebop717, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I clicked on the video link and for some reason the entire video was upside down, am I missing something?
- Ruhtar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the "technology" was how this thing could have been built so long ago and the "design", well, that's obvious.
That was meant humorously though as I do agree that the tags chosen were a bit odd but, oh well, isn't the first time and we all know it won't be the last. ;-() - jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Respecting non-Judeo-Christian religions is called tolerance, dumbass! Get used to it.
- Ruhtar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting you noticed "doesn't seem to fit" because that is to a large extent, the point and you will invariably always see the little shops like that unattached or somehow or other of a different style/pattern/location than the temples themselves.
I've heard various explanations for it, most of which you can probably guess at but it is also interesting that I have heard various explanations as opposed to a single one. - Ruhtar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Ferocious attack deer" :-()
Actually, there is another area, sort of like a park, where infirmed, sick or "odd" deer are kept and some of the "odd" ones are really ODD. I wouldn't call the ferocious but I wouldn't turn my back on them or bend over while doing it. :-() - Ruhtar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is somewhat ironic that the Dalai Lama, in his current incarnation is a total gadget freak. Although his interest are primarily with tech-toys of the past, it would not surprise me if he has membership here.
Somewhat unrelated, Buddhists are not without humor and although some comments may appear to be lacking in respect, they are not without their humor.
Mancat's "Someone buy these medieval dorks a solar-powered beadblaster." I thought was pretty funny especially with the "solar-powered" being the subtle touch changing the comment from being disrespectful to "playful".
That said, medieval dorks like these were of course around during medieval times and yet although there isn't a single empire that is still around that was then, these dorks still are.
Maybe it is a good sign that some consider us Diggers, dorks? :-() - Ruhtar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0KenOh, you are a little misinformed about WWII Kamikaze pilots.
They did not die for their beliefs in Budhism but instead, their belief in their Emperor deified. It is however a mistake commonly made. - KenOh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1While Buddhism isn't entirely blameless (kamikaze pilots were partially contributed by Zen Buddhism, and other current problems), I'd say Buddhism is among the best (read: least worst) religions. Their lack of dogma, when compared to western religions, is pretty cool.
- LaSepultura, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1"Before the cleaning priests step on the sacred image, a ceremony of taking out the spirit of Buddha must be performed."
No it doesn't. And seriously, all you need a few people with a fire hose. -
