- Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I wish more people would leave the EXIF in. Knowing the camera is one thing - I want to know the lens, f-settings and shutter speed, etc
- vince1731, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Finally they post camera stats. Most people might not think much of it, but every time I find good looking pictures, I immediately check which camera it was taken from.
- DalekoProvidek, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Not only is your comment nonsensical in that it is simply wrong because you can buy a camera anywhere, you also don't know the difference between a possessive and a plural: "camera's" should be cameras.
Go ahead bury me. - Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Doesn't mean Canon is the way to go ... just that more people are using it. The photographer means more than the camera.
/Canon user - becknell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Interesting stats though. Pretty much what I figured. Canon is the way to go, specially for P&S. Nikon is definitely respectable for dSLR though, can't ignore that.
- msephton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4PBase has had this for years, so it's good to see Flickr finally get their act together. http://www.pbase.com/cameras
- JamieBarrows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Whether they push Yahoo Shopping or not, this is still a good tool for seeing what cameras people are using. Just because they tie into Yahoo Shopping doesn't mean that you have to buy the camera from them.
- celopes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Price.
It is a DSLR that is inexpensive enough, good enought and that has a good offering of very good lenses (some much more expensive than the camera body itself) that can be ported to more expensive bodies if you need/want to.
The brand name of Canon is also what attracts people. In DSLR, IMHO, it is between Canon and Nikon.
I'm a Digital Rebel XT owner that wants the 5D badly. The XT costed me about $1000. The 5D would cost me more than twice that... - redlaser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3sometimes selecting categories is pretty tough. if youve submitter something a little offbeat you should know.
- Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I sooo want to move up from my Powershot G3 and get a Rebel 400D XTi.
- JamieBarrows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It is clearly stated that they cannot identify all cameras, and that the stats only reflect the ones they can identify. Maybe the sidekick is one of those that can't be identified.
- Supernova36, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So whats so good about a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT?
- smithco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It says that it's over one year in the side text.
- jon3k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Supernova36
The best balance of features and price, especially at the time of it's release. Nikon had to invent a whole new camera to compete in the category that Canon created (think D40). Going up to the 30D gets you an extra stop of ISO (3200), and extra stop of shutter (1/3200) and a spot meter for about twice the price. It's a heck of a lot of camera for WELL under $1,000. - jon3k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now if only Nikon could keep up with demand, these numbers *might* be a little different.
(Disclaimer: I'm a die hard Canon user and L glass owner/fanboy) - radial, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no you're right. at least they do mark it as being sponsored. in small light gray text under the item. but still. to me a featured item is an item that they feel is good quality with features and things that people look for and they recommend with confidence to their users. which, to me, can't be if the featured item is simply a sponsored ad.
- MyDigitalSin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, that was great! I'm looking to buy the pentax k100d and I keep getting professional shots for the sample images. Here, I can see what the shot will look like before doctoring it in PS. Thanks!
- hobg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What is the time scale on those graphs?
1 week, 1 month, 1 year, 6 years? What?
Those graphs are pretty and meaningless unless there's units on the X-axis. - radial, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Sorry, DP but i have to disagree with you. the 'featured camera' clearly states that it's a sponsored placement.
If i could digg down flickr for doing that I would. That's like if consumer reports were to accept ads for the top 10 whatever. - Samek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how do you check which camera it was taken from?
- Decker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's cheap
- MAG1CO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's nice to see flickr rolling out new features as ever - the new mobile site is really handy now it has yahoo login, perfect for use on my pda!
- rhaleuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Really interesting tool. Nicely laid out and fun to explore.
- smithco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What is interesting is that the top five of both SLR and P&S are dominated by two manufactures, Canon & Nikon. While popular does not necissarily equate to quality, the data is worth considering.
(disclaimer, I'm very happy with my Canon SLR) - GrahamStw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would be interesting to see a comparison in camera use between the (typically amateur/enthusiast) flickr users and (typically more professional) pbase users.
- AssProphet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The "world's best consumer-guide to cameras" is reaching a little too far. Since the sample set is flickr users, you can say that it's a good guide for flicker users.
If you want say it's the best consumer-guide, you have to say that flickr users represent the typical consumer. You may think everyone is using flicker, but IMO it's still a niche service. - djKianoosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm with you cofeedemon.. I like to do that to just learn how others have taken their photo. Sometimes though, people don't realize that if they process an image a lot in photoshop or something similar, if they don't save "as a copy" they might lose the EXIF data before they even upload the photo to flickr. also, some people use image resizers that completely remove the EXIF data.
anyway, I always show my EXIF data. shoot, even when I scan some old slides in, my scanner populates some basic EXIF data. - smithco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2radial, if I understand correctly, you're actually unhappy with them making it clear that the featured model (not the most popular) is *clearly marked* as being a sponsored item? I'm sure if you asked really nice, they could change it to be an underhanded, sneaky product placement just to make you happy.
- troon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is seriously skewed by the availability of EXIF data in the images. I take RAW photos with my Minolta, and my conversion process loses the EXIF data. My pictures therefore don't count towards the score for that camera, and I'd imagine that effect is not uniform across cameras and RAW converters...
- alysania, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It picks up the EXIF data that it's a T-Mobile sidekick when I upload, so I know it's identifiable.. seems that maybe it's a little skewed as to what cameras/phones they'll track.
- alysania, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1They're missing the sidekick cameras on the guide. The manufacturer, Sharp, isn't even listed! I upload photos from the SK all the time, and I'm sure other people do as well
- JiggNJive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1A very nice guide / statistics page! Thanks :)
- cirelo, on 10/12/2007, -14/+8It's just a way for Yahoo to sell camera's on yahoo shopping.
- scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0What the hell has this story got to do with design?
- RoboRay, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0Yeah, can I have my 15 seconds back that I wasted looking at that page?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1"this is the world's best consumer-guide for cameras"
i did not even find it that impressive, much less the worlds best
