the mirror pic was funny the first time I saw it, now its just old and tired. - Rfriaz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Wordpress pisses me off immensely. It obviously cannot handle the Digg effect, so please stop exciting me with the prospect of balloon animals when you know that damn site is going to crash after more than 10 Diggs.

- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Most of them are down but http://pileofphotos.com/view/138/Cool-balloon-art has a mirror of some of them plus a few not on the original page.
- djbelieve, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Thanks. Although I'm pretty sure these are the same photos that were forwarded in an email by parents and old people the world over.
- Egoist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm a developer who's worked with several varieties of blog software and I can say for certain that Wordpress is the most bloated. Just opening a single page requires over 100 queries to the database, which is abhorrent. Their developers swear up and down that Wordpress is written with performance in mind, but the code is *very* poorly written. I steer people away from it when they ask.
I prefer TextPattern myself as it's much quicker and the code is much cleaner. - flippedcracker, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8http://www.duggmirror.com/design/Not_your_average_balloon_animals_pics/
mostly works - steelmaverick, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I was expecting a blow-up sex doll or something.
- alexguyCA, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Does anyone have an answer to the "Is wordpress inherently bad" question, because I'm about to start a blog, and I'd like to know!
I mean, I thought it was the host that was responsible for the "digg effect." Not the software used to run the blog. Am I wrong? Does any one know? Many thanks to the person that can elucidate this issue for me.
Alex - dbr_onix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"quick question: is wordpress inherently bad? as in not stable? or is there something else that am i missing? because wordpress sites can almost never widthstand digg traffic"
Not really, it's just not very efficient, and makes lots of simultaneous requests to lots of files and MySQL queries which screws over even the best server very quickly.
There are caching plugins for Wordpress which help hugely, although regardless, if I were to setup such a site, I'd be tempted to use some other "blogging-engine" (Or write my own) - But, if your using Wordpress (for what ever reason) find and setup that WP-cache plugin and it should be fine - swrostmore, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The tunnel with hundreds of arms/hands looks like it could result in children being scarred for life.
- AShriveledSack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1haha arr those baloon turds by the toilet
- shm0edawg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2So all of these are pretty good until you scroll down to the last one. It just seems out of place. "And in 23rd place, submitted by 4 year old Gretta Johnson, a balloon that somewhat resembles a seal with a ball on its nose."
- skankyBacon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Probably the people visiting the site did it...the diggs probably had no effect.
- xe54, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@egoist,
with wp-cache plugin for wordpress, live page viewing then results in zero mysql queries.
their developers actually swear the code is written with accessibility and functionality in mind.
speed optimisation is what they push with each new release (as that code matures) as this is actually true.
the code is *not* poorly written. I also am a developer and know the power that wordpress offers - textpattern is simply a blog templating system - which I agree is more than sufficient for most simple blogs.
However, I am sticking with wordpress and if the guy in the article hosted his blog on wordpress.com this would still be live.
Get one of them. - Jo9100, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1you're crashing, but you're no wave
- ZMerlin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You all forgot the 19th Century Carousel....
- Bravocowboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1More amazing balloons - an installation in Diesel's Denim gallery in SoHo, which only lasted a few days before it had to be redone. Too bad not may people saw it, the store was empty and reeked of latex: http://phillipangert.smugmug.com/gallery/2478305#P-1-9
- slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Some of them are good.
