- Rkstar, on 11/12/2008, -0/+6As a web developer/designer for a pretty big local newspaper ( dailygazette.com if anyone is interested), a challenge is not only the initial design, but making it able to grow... especially the front page. Everyone at the company wants their content/links on the front page.. from the ad department, to the news dept, to the bloggers, photographers, to the random links like local gas prices, weather, etc. And every week someone wants something else added. It all begins to look like a big mess after a while. One of the best abilities of professional newspaper website designers is the ability to say "no". Every once in a while it works.
- nanexo, on 11/11/2008, -0/+6There is always an issue in displaying content in contrast to design and still making it seemlessly blend in with each other as if it is a whole and at the same time make it appealing to look at and conform the style and trend in design of this day, so thse are some nice tips to have :) from a designers perspective
- NathanielJ, on 11/12/2008, -1/+4Quite.
- ElBeh, on 11/12/2008, -1/+4I don't like the grid-based layout on the NYT site. Sure it's an efficient way of putting a lot of different content on one page, but it also feels very overwhelming.
- EliteByDesign, on 11/12/2008, -1/+4Agreed.
- shame126, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2They have so much content to pack in there, I guess thats why aesthetics dont look so hot.
- JoeLeo, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2Aren't newspapers just a hardcopy print out of the Internet with yesterday's news?
- davatron5000, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2interesting... no mention of drudgereport.com
- EliteByDesign, on 11/12/2008, -1/+3Newspapers online do the best job at content management, but not always looking so hot in the aesthetics department.
- marc2242, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2foolnsr, the Guardian is included.
- brokentone, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2I must say that I enjoy The Onion being their top pick, although I do agree. . . sad day to real news outlets when they can't look as good as the satire.
- mattsx, on 11/12/2008, -1/+3Certainly.
- brokentone, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1Have you seen their website before? You realize this is an article about good design, not about popularity, right?

- troutfarmer, on 11/11/2008, -1/+1thanks for sharing this. as a technical consultant for a large newsworthy blog I find write-ups like these extremely helpful in educating my client!
- romantanner424, on 02/21/2009, -0/+0Very interesting. Thank you
- Detrus, on 11/12/2008, -0/+0Yea they're all pretty crappy. I liked Wired personally, but as they added content they screwed up some things and made it sloppy.
- tapeworm77, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1The 4 career stages of a web designer:
1) Lets add a bevel and drop shadow to everything! F#@K YEAH!
2) Maybe I should tone it down a bit... make most of my site a little less flashy so that the main parts stand out more. But maybe just a slight shadow and a few stokes here and there.
3) OK now I have to take into consideration how the eye moves, and how contrastwhite spaceproximityalignmentbalancecolor all come together to make it easy to direct the eye around in a specific order of hierarchical importance. This is getting complex.
4) Head asplode! - aroy220, on 11/12/2008, -0/+0Maybe they have redesigned their page since the last time I looked, but I've always found the Onion to be one of the most difficult sites to navigate.
- Zedizdead, on 11/12/2008, -2/+1Buried for Huff Post
- foolnsr, on 11/12/2008, -1/+0Sorry but what about The Guardian - dense but slick still considering massive content - far better than Times '. Other examples??
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -8/+1DrudgeReport.com kicks all of their asses. Oh, and if you don't believe me, look at the traffic stats at the bottom right.
Between it and craigslist, what more proof do you need that pretty is a waste.
