Nice to see some AJAX for the mass ;)- jdelsman, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4Deutschland auch!
- westoncampbell, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3http://www.yahoo.co.uk
- kimos, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Nice that the first thing I see is text rendering incorrectly on FX...
- dustyshadow, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Why do we have a link that is about yahoo.com that goes to another website? This is ridiculous. Link to real f'ing page.
- GregoryHarbin, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9YUCK. I played around with the new Yahoo for a few minutes, and I still hate it. I hate to sound like a Google fanboy, but I have my personalized page all set up, I have no desire to use Yahoo mail or messanger, this new page loads really slowly, isn't as interactive as Google IG...why would I use it?
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2It feels like the AOL software. The news pane constantly changing, too much stuff on the home page and dirt slow.
- bluemech, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Yahoo still sucks, the site design is still boring and has too many superfluous elements.
- vezquex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Still fails to validate hansomely, 41 errors and no doctype!
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.yahoo.com%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline
- Darkhacker, on 10/12/2007, -16/+35I could care less if it is using the latest in buzzwords. I'm digging it because the interface is 1000x better than the old one. Much cleaner, easier on the eyes, and easy to navigate. This my friends is how you compete with Google. I would definately consider switching to Yahoo as my main portal.
- r2d7, on 10/12/2007, -6/+45FOOL. It's all about the AJAX, the site itself is irrelevant.
If someone put up the goatse shi with AJAX that would get front paged. - orbstra, on 10/12/2007, -21/+9Yahoo (with all their services) is trying to be the supermarket of the internet, ANYTHING you could possibly want to do could be done through them! Google has a good Homepage but it has it's limits, so stick with NetVibes! I have e-mails with google, yahoo, hotmail, and my own domain and they all go into my netvibes along with features from each company! definetly checck it out
www.netvibes.com - Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Now they just need to work on pages that still look like this:
http://tv.yahoo.com/ - crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3I'm just gonna make an assumption that orbstra's 'Domain' is netvibes.com.
Seriously, go advertise somewhere else. - cadrass, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I agree with Darkhacker... This is a massive improvement over the old site. Way to go Yahoo!
- Nyghtewynd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I like it. Much better than the old one. Good stuff.
- tafkase7en, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5" This my friends is how you compete with Google."
Changing the design of a website is not how you "compete with google". - diggmaddy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1IT STILL DOESN'T HAVE DIGG RSS FEED on the homepage as I have on my google IG! No digg!
- HumbleDialog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So... I can pretty much ignore the right-hand 40% of the screen, right? Because not only is this where all the obtrusive ads are, it's also where the web search button is.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Interface is ok. AJAX is nice. Content sucks.
I've ignored Yahoo's Spampage before and will continue to do so. Thanks for the preview.
- r2d7, on 10/12/2007, -6/+45FOOL. It's all about the AJAX, the site itself is irrelevant.
- semtex, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5The new Yahoo! home page has now gone live.
- valona, on 10/12/2007, -8/+36I'm going to get dugg down for saying this, because it's Yahoo and not Google, but I think it looks really really good. The option to switch between narrow and wide view is a nice touch, and the mail preview is just sweet. It's much cleaner looking than the old page. I wish they would change their logo, or smarten it up a small bit, it screams 1995.
- blaksaga, on 10/12/2007, -10/+54There's still too much crap on the page.
- orbstra, on 10/12/2007, -14/+5Just get the AdBlock plugin for Mozilla and you're set!
- tHePeOPle, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6@blaksaga
Right on. I can't wait to not use this. - shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6the worst part is this - Welcome to the all-new Yahoo! It's made for you.
why the ***** does that popup even after I've been visiting the site for weeks?
why dont they have a " I dont give a ***** " button so that thing can stop annoying me? - Hawkstra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Blaksage is right, still to much stuff on the page.
I like google better for that one reason. Google isn't jammed pack with crap. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree completely. A good page you can navigate in seconds, but Yahoo is filled with random, unrelated info strewn all over the page, along with a minefield of ads thrown in between. Who needs this **** really?
What are you getting out of that page? Email, news? Some sort of useful info? There are much better and more customizable ways to get all those without going through a barrage of spam.
Google's approach is much better, they really cut the spam to a minimum.
- Sspayt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5it is good to see the progress of Yahoo to compete with google. But i feel yahoo is damn slow..
- sk545, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19yep, just too many links.
- JonnyJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16indeed its alot more clustered than google is, and for that reason google still fits the needs that I'm looking for, but it certainly is pretty and I give the web designers much credit for their creation
- MehYam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Search quality aside, the Yahoo/Google comparisons are a little apple v. orange. Google has that portal page that's more like Y!, and Y!'s got a slimmed down Google-kin here: http://search.yahoo.com/
- ScornForSega, on 10/12/2007, -13/+0Definitely overdue but..
did they have to rip off Digg's color scheme? Or are silver and blue the new black? - BritishGolgo13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Hasn't this been out for a while now? Or was it in beta up until now or something? At any rate, I agree with valona, especially about the logo. The new layout is very sleek and appealing.
- GeneHACKman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Huh? I've been looking at that homepage for over a month. I didn't realize that it was not 'live'.
- muldster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Yeah, I saw the same thing about two weeks ago. Any idea why it only seems to have been us?
- robweber, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3i've been seeing this for at least a week now too.
- burnstyle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14i think ill stick with googles personal home page..... its so much cleaner
- MikeOSX, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4agreed...yahoo is just too cluttered for me. I'll stlck to the simplicity of google.
- burnstyle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6for those that dont know... the google page is here
http://www.google.com/ig - enterprisesos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And Google doesn't have to bite off AOL
- SATURN, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1meh... not that impressive... i thought they would go with that purple/black theme they've been using recently.
- osxmusic, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5
Nice to see that we're all directed to a blog talking about Yahoo instead of Yahoo itself.
Spam.- calebegg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Linking to yahoo.com would have been pointless because when the post was made the page was not live. This is also not about the page itself, which has been at yahoo.com/preview for a while now. The purpose of this digg article is to announce that the yahoo.com page redesign will come out today, which is why it links to the blog.
- Matic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2chess is a little slow on my machine... Too much going on for me. I think i'll keep things simple.
- procdaddy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1the real question at hand is...can yahoo survive digg? :-D
- mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5What the hell is with the top banners? Disappearing and moving the entire page each time isn't very appealing.
- id34, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0This really is awesome! Looks so clean.
I've also heard the admin backend has gone through a complete over haul allowing easier updating of info; I'm sure this will save them a lot of time.
http://www.GoVista.org - sewalsh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2am I out the loop or something but hasn't this been live (beta) with over a month?
- FKnight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"am I out the loop or something but hasn't this been live (beta) with over a month?"
--
Sure if you accept Google's redefinition of the word "beta" to mean "live."
- FKnight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"am I out the loop or something but hasn't this been live (beta) with over a month?"
- rages4calm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Was never to big of a fan of yahoo, but its good to see they put very good use to ajax and using it properly. The new site somewhat reminds me of a cross between msn style, with google's ajax, and myspace as far as the 360 goes. Wonder if this new approach will attract more people.
- vordhosbn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5ugh...the source code for the new site is absolutely atrocious...the stylesheet goes on for miles and miles.
i guess it doesn't matter though, yahoo's front page and even google's front page are made obsolete for me by firefox's little google search box in the toolbar...i only care about how the results page looks.- aclelland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Hehe the homepage alone is 95kb without any of the images or animations...so they are not going for dial up users here? I thought they would still be a large percentage of the market.
- rages4calm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, though that actually makes perfect sense the fact is more and more people are switching to broadband, it won't be long before they out number dial up users. http://www.pcpitstop.com/research/bandwidth.asp
- Niz1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well Yahoo does have a separate search page which you can keep as your homepage, it pretty much looks like Google on this page. you can cross off the mail and news if you want.
http://search.yahoo.com/ - amk29j, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I like it, it looks really nice on the eyes. I would definitely use it except there's this one problem. I use GMail. I like the Google customized page as well, it just doesn't look very nice. It looks TOO simple.
- amk29j, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Nevermind, I don't like the Yahoo! page, it's not very customizable and My Yahoo! looks like crap.
- Gigadafud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7i think i see a few spots where they could put a few more links, someone should let them know about the available space.
- bebopredux, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I've been stuck using My Yahoo as my home page for years. Yet, I don't see My Yahoo as being updated which it needs BADLY.
Google's customizable page is slowly getting to me. I may switch soon.- supafuzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would be more impressed, if my.yahoo.com had the same new look.
- rhamej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How can you be stuck using a web page? Is someone from yahoo standing behind you holding a gun to your head? Maybe that is why yahoo is #1.
- HoldenMyOwn, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1It seems to be 60-75% ugly ads including dreaded mortgage offers. I'll pass (and I had high hopes). :(
- Scooley01, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Can you say "infinitely better"?
- silverbax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Don't really care for the new page. The old one was cluttered, now the new one is even more cluttered.
- xuixinho, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I'm afraid I'm the only one of thinks the old one was better. I don't know why though, maybe the colors...
- sandesh247, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I do too, the newer one is inexplicably too heavy ... and AJAX things are a bit of a resource hog.
- ericnmu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Nice, they finally added Opera support.
- sremick, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Looks pretty. Never really used the Yahoo home page much anyway so hard to tell if the usability is better or not. One thing I noticed was that the redesign of their home page is nice and snappy, unlike the redesign of their mail service. The new Yahoo mail runs like molasses, even worse if you're not running Windows. I have dived into the code a bit in order to work up new Adblock filters for it... I must say, it's a bloated mess.
- slowelectron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Finally, it's viewable in Safari.
- dance2die, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Looks quite awesome.
Gotta love the eye candies... - INHUMANITY, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I remember when I made the switch from Yahoo over to Google when Yahoo would load up and the cursor would not automatically start in the search field. I would have to navigate to the search box every time I wanted to search for something.
I have not used Yahoo since. This new design may give it the oomph it has needed and lacked for many years. I like the design. It is loaded with content, yet they manage to keep it moderately clean and easy on the eyes. - posterposter, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2It's too complicated, cluttered, and busy. Sure there is loads of information and it is nicely grouped into sections, but each section has a different layout. I find myself having to waste time to read each part of the thing to figure out if I want to click on something. That's fine if my brain is fresh, but after staring at a computer screen for an entire day, it requires too much work.
- daveboudreau, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'm getting kinda tired of that generic "web 2.0" look that all the websites are coming out with now.
Yahoo is Yahoo. All the fundamentals are still there, its still yahoo, just in a shiny web 2.0 box. yippee? - trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Google really needs to hire some web designers now.
- Niomi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Millions of people may have their first interaction with AJAX today?? This is said like it's a damn religious expirience. It's just javascript, get over yourselves. >_>
- thinkycap, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1www.netvibes.com
- Thorpe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The old layout is still available at this link:
http://www.yahoo.com/?p=1153158578 - skilskilskil, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Yahoo Launch still doesn't work for Mac or Firefox.
- critic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Doesn't matter, it still won't run unless you have the DRMd WMP10 and a funky ActiveX control. Achieve content liscenses must be set to aquire automatically.
Free content with a very steep price. Don't kill your BT cliient just yet. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's a good point, critic.
YAHOO GET RID OF THE WMP REQUIREMENT!
- critic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Doesn't matter, it still won't run unless you have the DRMd WMP10 and a funky ActiveX control. Achieve content liscenses must be set to aquire automatically.
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Looks good.
- usermac, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I like it because when you size the type with command-+, the css gracefully scales to fill the whole screen. Very nice indeed.
- jiggadigga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This site has been up for quite a while, but I lik the cleaner look and the ease of use. The AJAX is great and I love not having to visit a seperate page to check my email.
- diggmanic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks alot better than before.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hmm, I don't see the new home page.
- AlanJV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm gonna stick with the old one. I'm a creature of habit and am already comfortable with it. There is no need for me to switch on over.
- officerdoofy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So it's made for me? What if I don't want all of that stuff on one page? I'm not seeing a way to get rid of it. Sweet, I can change the color...
Otherwise, props to Yahoo. It's definently a step in the right directions. If it had the ability to add and remove certain elements I might even switch from IG. - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1it's telling me to upgrade my browser to experience all the whiz bang
I'm using a nokia 770
this must mean that unless you're using a computer you're fucckd trying to use yahoo - solvable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Much more sleek. I like it way more.
However, I like Google way way more. -
