- 36linescreen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+71when did PR and DC get their own stars?
- mattyG, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6952 stars on the US flag? more like 50
- krached, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51When I lived outside the US about a decade ago, everyone swore that there were 52 states. I could not convince people otherwise. I think it has something to do with a standard card deck.
- Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -4/+53I think the Canadian flag idea is great as long as they rename the country Batmania or Gotham.
- Muncher, on 10/12/2007, -4/+52Evidently, people really CAN'T count the stars.
- mkameli, on 10/12/2007, -9/+44Oh, I thought it was for Iraq and Afghanistan...
- SirSchwank, on 10/12/2007, -8/+40Screw blanket statements. They're absurd. Period.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27That's right!!! ***** all those people who aren't Asian!!!
- Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24No it isn't. Everyone should be made to feel like they're equal to everyone else in every category including athletics, academics, and intelligence so we can eliminate competition! Competition only leads to progress and self-awareness, and who the hell wants that?
/sarcasm
These PC twinkies need to be smacked around hard. You wonder why half the kids on Digg kan't spel wurds correktly. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21@Laytonx
Territories aren't states, they don't get a star. - Recuso, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I think the best out of the bunch were Canada, Liberia, and finally Britain. I don't know, the redesigned British flag looks funky and somewhat cool. Liberia was hillarious, and Canada was just plain awesome.
- somnus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17@mattyG: That was the joke! For some reason, a lot of people think that it's 50 lower states + Alaska & Hawaii.
- Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15
Brucewayneia.
Sounds cooler than Botswana, which kinda sounds like bat guano. - jayesbee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14It wasn't really about political correctness, though. It was about unreasonable clients who make silly demands to their designers....
- Couchy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Personally I like Batmanada
- Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16
Just think of it as empty DIMM slots. Room for expansion.
Plus, some wiseacres refer to the U.K. and Israel as the 51st State, so why should they have to fight with each other for the "coveted" spot when we can just say 52 States?
But then that will discriminate against Puerto Rico which in some quarters wants to be a State and not a commonwealth. Well, if one remembers the futuristic television series *Time Traxx*, Hawai'i becomes the independent sovereign nation known as the Polynesian (sic) Republic, so that leaves an opening. Then again, Thailand has become a part of the U.S. in the era of *Escape from L.A.* so who knows?
Maybe we can get the North and South Carolinas to merge and free up another star. Same goes for the Dakotas. And the Commonwealth of Virginia plus West-by-God-Virginia. - HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Huh? Are you trying to be funny? You're failing.
- cleverhanz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16Canada and Mexico.
- jaredvolkl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Me too, Libera actually got an LOL out of me.
- cogen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Liberia is my favorite.
- dohidied, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Niger: "The flag's fine, but the names a bit risky. XXX-ger."
Hilarious - shoelace414, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13they forgot about Poland.
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8 The Canadian flag was funny but the British flag was very nice, I liked it the best, btw it sort of looks like Haida art.
- pureliquidhw, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10BUT YOUR FACE IS!!!!!!1111
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
PWNED!!!!!!!!! - mkameli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Absolutely great. The Liberia one had me cracking up.
- qcubed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6To be honest, it's really less about PC than client desires. And yeah, clients can really be that dumb.
- chapium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4By your standard, probably a 100 others too. (they did mention Poland quite a few times)
ps: yes, i did get the "joke" - mkameli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A recent client of mine chickened out on my suggestion of using an image of a toddler picking her nose on the cover of a mailer I was creating for him because he thought some might find it offensive.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Puerto Rico statehood movement
uses a 51 star flag.. i dont think they knew where to put the new star, so they changed it a bit.

- mutants, on 08/17/2008, -0/+3Gotta love working with clients...
- Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You don't?
- TSSaloic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh Batman Our Home And Native Land...
- heckheck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, the UK flag is very World2.0. Not as good however, as this one: http://www.passportstamp.com/country_info&countryID=141 -- which appears to have been through a tidying up all by itself...
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Every time Puerto Rico votes on statehood it gets shot down.
Reason? Federal Taxes"
Proof that people would rather avoid taxes than have a vote. In other words, money > freedom. - zcreem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is so true, client input, man it kills.
- corporate70, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Every time Puerto Rico votes on statehood it gets shot down.
Reason? Federal Taxes - SoupsMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I LOL'd for 10 minuets.
As a design major, I couldn't help but laugh, and agree with some of what i saw.
(Because red is an aggressive colour . . . *puke green*)
+1 digg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4ohhh, I didn't know I needed your permission to say something.
you're a ***** moron. - nevenmrgan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Good idea and well executed, but the pieces themselves (and the commentary) were just not funny.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Epilepsy?
- BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How do you know this person is from the U.S.A? It would be bad if he lived in the US and didn't know how many states make up the US but if he lives in europe I wouldn't expect him to know. He should have just googled it though, its not THAT hard.
- gninneh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"When I lived outside the US about a decade ago, everyone swore that there were 52 states."
Wow, I thought it was a popular belief only in my country, Denmark.
If this guy were in fact from Denmark, he (really) would have thought there are 52 states in the US. He is however born in Germany, but lived in Canada since the age 14, so I guess it IS just a joke, supporting the text "It's impossible to count the stars".
All encyclopedias here state that there are 50 states, but the news and general media often say "in all of the 52 states" or the like. I even had a teacher in third grade who said that there are 52 states, and when confronted (I counted the stars) he responded, "oh of course they don't add a star if the pattern of stars doesn't look good" (or something like that). It's a vicious circle - people obviously get their knowledge from TV, and those people teach their kids of 52 states, and the journalists don't care for trivial details as number of states. When told that there are 50 states, they don't believe it because someone just mentioned 52 in the tv. Sometimes the number is 51 and 53 though. Some argue, not knowing of course, that Washington D.C. is a state, and some sarcastically argue that Israel, the UK or Iraq is the extra state.
Wonder which extra states those extra are - but a request wouldn't be taken seriously, because it would involve naming 52 states, and those who are proven wrong say "oh it's no big deal", and forget facts the day after. I guess it has something to do with deck of cards, or that 50 is too easy to remember to be true, and thus 52 must be more correct.
Someone should write a wikipedia article on countries that believe the US has 52 states. I'm not sure how great percentage of the population know the secret number, but I guess it is 40%-50%. On the other hand, most people aren't even aware how many countries make up the EU (it's 25 now, 27 as of January 1 2007, and growing almost each year). The EU flag though has always 12 stars. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great post...Except I can't get that catchy music out of my head and there were no words to hum to in my head...Cool find.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2see they are confusing two puzzles
52 C in a D
and
50 S in the U S - somnus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Some were, but you could tell it was done by a savvy marketing company, not a savvy design company =)
- {{sPaz}}, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just so the 'clients' know, the entire Israeli flag is made up of Jewish motifs (the two blue stripes on a white background are a representation of a Talit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talit)). Probably should scratch the whole concept so we don't offend anyone :)
- Hellmark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess Europe decided for Guam and Puerto Rico that they're not longer territories. Too bad they are basically telling all the other island territories to screw off.
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not to mention i hate cursive writing
- psygnisfive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2NO REPRESENTATION WITH TAXATION!
