- Anrkist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+73He was only alive for 400 hours, sadly.. he never learned to read.
- jcblitz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+50Very cool, however this title of this doesn't make any sense.

- CkMaverick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13400 hours is hardly a life's work... Not to put down this man's achievement but merely the title of this story. 90% of the kids that play WoW have devoted alot more than 400 hours to the game...
- roomforpanic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Yeah, good thing he's not union, he would've gone on strike.

... sorry I had to. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5He's lucky he didn't get fired from his job.
We'll be here all week. Try the veal. - antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5So the guy only lived for 400 hours?
- EvilOtto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4RICK: AIEEGH! A RAT!
[runs to the refrigerator and opens the door. He grabs an acoustic guitar that was inside. He runs over to the mice and smahes them with the guitar. He gives them a two fingered salute and returns to the table]
NEIL: [shocked] Oh, Wow! Rick, that's really heavy, man! My grandfather made that guitar entirely out of matchsticks on his death bed!
RICK: I hate rats, ok?

was this the first thing that came to mind for anyone else or am I the only Young Ones fan? - Orangutan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4did you read the article? some professional ukelele player (what a profession) said they sounded really good when he played one for the bbc. read the article...
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'd be more worried that they couldn't stand up to the tension the strings put on the neck/body. It doesn't really explain how he got any strength out of that construction...
Keeping the neck on a guitar from warping is one of the harder problems luthiers face. - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Not too many bands use them these days so a lot of people don't know what they are."
Blue grass bands use 'em all the time. I think the dixie chicks do too, and possibly incubus (for that "floating down the river" song).
Hell, lots of guitar stores have 'em, and every major online guitar store sells mandolins. So, yeah, they're a little obscure, but anyone who knows anything about guitars has heard of 'em. - scratched, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The fourth is a Mandolin. Not too many bands use them these days so a lot of people don't know what they are. Off the top of my head, the only active band I can think of that has a mandolin in their band is System of a Down.
- loconet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Meh old news, Gentoo users have been doing the equivalent for years :p
- glev2005, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4His son looks like he smoked 10,000 joints in that first picture.
- Luuvitonen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Except for the gluing part I guess it was a lot easier than making the neck from one or two pieces of wood. A neck made of glued sticks would be, depending on glue, a lot more stiffer and homogenous than solid wood. Talk about a composite design.
- kb0x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"some professional ukelele player (what a profession) said they sounded really good when he played one for the bbc."
Right, because he is *really* likely to say "what a load of *****" when asked what they sound like.
I think what he meant was "sounds ok, Considering it's made form match sticks". - maehem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If your drummer keeps exploding then what you need next for your band is a guitar player who catches on fire during the solo.
- dDuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"The ukulele is in the book of Guinness World Records, 2003 Edition. Abbreviated text says, "Tony Hall (UK) has no life." It has also been played on BBC television. The professional musician who performed with the ukulele said, " The tone and sound is great and it is a pleasure to handle and play.""
- nemrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2+1 for the Young Ones reference!
- kmb1794, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Quality rocks!
- joshpowell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm surprised -- those actually look really nice. Amazing attention to detail.
- kb0x, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Cool and all, But i bet they sound like *****.
- matthewaaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hopefully these aren't strike anywhere matches...
- rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1absolutely ridiculous, and yet...somehow awesome.
- LonesomeFighter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good thing he lit each match before hand. Hate for a spark to ignite the entire guitar.
- wolvyne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He needs to keep the match heads on so while rocking out, classic 80's style naturally, the guitar explodes into a glorious flame!
- mikewhalley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@CkMaverick
"90% of the kids that play WoW have devoted alot more than 400 hours to the game..."
Yes, but will they have achieved anything for their own kids to be proud of in years to come? - Putemup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who cares about the title? That was a badass piece of art!
- adragons, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You're right about the title and #1, but I see in the first picture, a violin, a guitar, and a ukulele - the fourth is another ukulele (I think).
- rxbbx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The Matchstick Ukulele".. ive respect for the guy.. its real though but also f#cking crazy..
- dDuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1posted in wrong reply, sorry.
- ripcrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1After reading this, I better never have anyone make fun of my hobby of building rockets. They are good, cheap, safe fun damnit! And it's the nearest thing to blowing stuff up that I could get, without actually blowing stuff up or setting it on fire.
- Kauzman01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"the only active band I can think of that has a mandolin in their band is System of a Down."
@scratched
What an arrogant comment. To think your the only one to realize a mandolin too. The mandolin is a staple of the bluegrass band, and I'm sure your not implying that all bluegrass groups are currently inactive for the winter. On top of that there is Relient K, Rush, The Dixie Chicks, Flogging Molly and Green Day, who all have used or use currently the mandolin in their playing. - hexydes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Quite literally, I would get through one fret, take the advice from the leprechaun in the sandbox, and burn the house down.
- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Evidently they have been played by professional musicians who claim that they play and sound very good. I can't really say much about this. Obviously, if the guitar was made entirely from that crappy match wood, it would sound bad, but as it is made of teeny little pieces of wood and massive amounts of glue, it is definitely not the same thing. As for strength, hide glue is stronger than wood, so these guitars are in theory STRONGER than a solid wood guitar.
- Luuvitonen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"the only active band I can think of that has a mandolin in their band is System of a Down"
Could well be, except that they are "on hiatus" for the time being. - mikehill33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yawn...
- semvhu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Very cool? It was made out of matchsticks, which makes it very hot!

"But **your** not"
"Because **your** to ***** retarded"
"And now like a dumb ***** **your** viewing ads"
Now who's looking 'retarded'? - tinasajn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the man needs some credit.
- matchstickman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just signed in to thank everyone for their comments about my late father's 'matchstickology' as he coined his art. I stumbled across dig.com by chance and was blown away when I viewed the heads up about the "world famous matchstick guitar." Don't take my word for it, the guitar is in a book about P. T. Barnum and the chapter is excerpted online.
For those who wondered how the matchstick guitar sounded. The Rhinestone Cowboy himself, Glen Campbell said, "It's a marvellous work of art and as good as any conventional instrument I've played from this era." Photo of Glen and quote online.
One of the world's greatest classical violinists of the 20th century Lord Yehudi Menuhin was astonished when I visited him at his London home to show the matchstick violin and bow. information online.
The fourth instrument in the photo is a Neapolitan mandolin that was a popular back in the 1930s when my father made it. The mandolin today as sirspocksalot says is used alot, especially in bluegrass bands. Coincidentally, my own story that proves my father lived for more than 400 hours is on a bluegrass website.
All the best,
Tony Hall -
