- Jams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20I stumbled across this site a few years ago. Being a regular tube user I was facinated to learn that I travelled past all these unused stations.
I helped this bloke identify the "Helix escalator" that he pictures on his site. - BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20What part is garbage? The fact that it isn't Web2.0 enough for you? Its here because of its content, not what it looks like.
- mhanley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Fascinating site!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19***** off then!
- diggeddugg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14You sir, are a *****.
- kubudubudubuntu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11omg, its the tubes!
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10That's pretty cool. Ive always been interested in this stuff.
I know that here in Toronto we have a few abondoned ones too. Either they are complete but not in use, or they were started and never completed. The tracks to some of them are visable if you're sitting at the front of the train peering down the tunnel.
+Digg :D - gorilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Real life easter eggs!
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Stupid reply system. Mod this down.
- aoe2bug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+71,150 now, at first i was like, what the ******* are all these emoticons for. digg
- BBX25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7There's only one, and that's Lower Bay. Allen station was under construction but after the government switched and funding was cut, they filled it with concrete. Lower Osgoode and Lower queen are more rough-ins than stations, for streetcars. I learned that off of transit.toronto.on.ca, but it doesn't hurt when your dad works for the TTC too. :)
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7excellent photography, kinda reminds me of sleepy city (http://www.sleepycity.net/) they specialise in old forgotten underground sections of cities (started in melbourne i believe)
- mrnick1234567, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah I love this kind of stuff. The helix escalator was a crazy idea - shame it didnt work.
One of the empty stations in London (Aldwych) used to be available for hire. I think they had a few art exhibitions there - I'd loved to have had a look round. There was even an old train at the platform! Pictures of it are on the site. - appleswitch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6They broke 1000! I love this counter :P
- bat-21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A few stations are privately owned. Paul McCartney owns one and featured it in one of his music videos.
In "Die Another Day", Q's lab is supposed to be the abandoned Down Street station. - antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5WHEW! I'm glad they found them again. That was close.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What, in the name of *****, are you banging on about?
- rnscwas123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can also see lost stations of the New York City subway system at www.nycsubway.org
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5They don't look clogged to me. Must have a lot of lotteries in London.
- BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"There are 634 visitors reading these pages at the moment including yourself."
Lil'Blue Dudes FTW! - NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And I thought losing house keys was incompetent, but losing a subway station, now that's on a level of it's own.
- Brak710101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4When I was first on it was 1,749.
I win. - Cowboy5995, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 anyone? To bad you cant visit any of these stations anymore. I think it would have made one heck of a tour.
- RareSaturn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Dunno about SleepCity, but http://www.caveclan.org was defiantly started in Melbourne.
- Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Maybe it's not American enough for him.
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I would say this would've been better categorized under World & Business | Offbeat News.
Regardless, it's still a cool site, and does deal with technology. Just not NEW technology. The idea of building an electric underground train system was pretty high tech for its day.
It amazes me that some people don't realize something as simple as the hammer is technology. - r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It isn't always about how pretty a site looks.
Unlike some very pretty sites there are out there, this site actually has "compelling content", something that is slowly being lost with all the eye-candy. - sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Uh-oh. Does he have permission to post that map of the subway system??
- Clemenceau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Come on, haven't you ever seen V for Vendetta? That movie wouldn't be possible without that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's starting to feel the digg effect..
- DS513, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sorry to double-post, but on the topic of hidden and abandoned urban locations this story appeared on the BBC News website recently:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4831530.stm - richardiscool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2According to the TfL site, you don't need permission if it's for non-commercial use.
- DS513, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know there's at least one disused subway station in Philadelphia, PA. I've heard that you can only access it from underground, it's been abandoned since the 30's, and it's located near the Chinatown section of the city. Back when Citizens Bank Park was slated to be built in this section of the city, there was talk of reopening the station.
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think he's somehow trying to equate stealing car washes to revealing interesting historical locations. And trying to summarily remove vowels from the English language.
- dvgraphics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2More "lost" NYC stations:
http://www.columbia.edu/~brennan/abandoned/ - dhuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2a series of tubes!
- DarthTurducken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If you like this stuff, you should read Neil Gaiman's "Neverwhere", about a guy who gets lsot in an imaginary world in London's abandoned underground.
- Beelzebub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"There are 819 visitors reading these pages at the moment including yourself."
i got more Lil'Blue dudes than you...i win - noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's cool.
I was in London two days ago on holiday, and didn't even know about this. Lots of stations were closed, including Lancaster Gate on the Central line, which was next to my nearest station, Queensway.
I threw away my tube maps, but I could swear that I saw the Bakerloo and Metropolitan lines... - sbutcher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lancaster gate is undergoing a 6 month refurbishment. it will be open in november.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancaster_Gate_tube_station - DruSam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is where Q from the James Bond series makes all of the latest spy gadgets!
- philo23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1great digg, brilliant site, very interesting.
- Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This site hasn't been updated design wise in years, yes. And he might not be a great designer, but the information is great.
I'm sure you would all rather read a web 2.0 blog about someone's day and how angry they are at the world. - atomicshed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We had our end of year degree show at Aldwych station (Maidstone college of Art and Design)
- 15charmaxwtf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is it me or is it really really difficult to read this site.
- gwenkelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Has anyone read the book _Neverwhere_ by Neil Gaiman? A fantastic novel set in the world below London. The abandoned Tube stations play a prominent role, and it's a fantastic read. If you haven't read it yet, check it out at a public library near you :)
- Jams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Heres another cool abandoned bunker under Birmingham (UK): http://www.birminghamanchor.co.uk/
They still have food in the cupboards and a snooker table.. - uground, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've tested it on most browsers and up until now it's been fine. It's the counter that broke it - it's normally only got 10-20 people to contend with - not the thousands it's seeing at the moment. Firefox copes with it but IE doesn't - I've removed it as it was making the front page pretty difficult to read.
- noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2NSMike: "Regardless, it's still a cool site, and does deal with technology. Just not NEW technology."
Ugg make club. Club good.
You digg ugg's club site. It good. - casasbarlavento, on 05/20/2008, -0/+0What an interesting and historical website.
The idea is quite original and I would never wonder that could be such tings in the underground. -
