- scottcropper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35Gruber just made a post about it - http://daringfireball.net/2007/03/logomaid_rip_off
- idesign, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28Boy did you go to the wrong school. Ask for your money back.
- idesign, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Logomaid, whether they ripped this one off or not, rips off a TON of logos from everyone else. I hate companies like these, all they do is profit off the creativity and hard work of others.
- timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Check out these rips as well:

Apple's lawyerdogs will probably be all over them shortly anyways. - moglenstar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23http://www.logomaid.com/detail.php?uid=4329&maincat=1
wga anybody?
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ - daveamos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Here's the design chop shop in question: http://www.logomaid.com/
I can't believe THEY are threatening to sue Dan. Bizarre. - Splashman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Just so everyone understands who bgbs is, here's some info from LogoMaid's contact page:
Marketing
1903 60th Place E., Suite M4186

This explains bgbs's linguistic skills, as well as his Florida reference. Doesn't explain his inability to add 2+2, though -- that must be genetic. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Perhaps they should change their name to LogoRaid?
- VhaidraU, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Being that I'm not familiar with SimpleBits, the above link told me nothing.
- sputza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Irony at its best.
- Splashman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Haha -- you finally pulled the Apple logo, Paul! Good move!
Too late, though. Everyone and their brother must have a screencap by now. Like this one:
http://web.mac.com/splashman/logomaidapple.png
What were you saying about 2 bites?
Moron. - Splashman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Fair enough. But when a sensible person makes a mistake, what do they do? Rectify it, not defend it with a crowd of boneheaded sockpuppets.
- GCarden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I notice the logo examples on Logo Maid's front page are watermarked. Presumably so people won't rip them off?
;) - Splashman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16"bgbs" -- you're obviously another sock puppet for Paul Viluda, aka "vilords" aka "midster05" aka "pretty_petra" aka "ledo_bridgeportwv". Your moronic defense mirrors your others in the Flickr comments.
You obviously know nothing about copyright/trademark law, nor about Apple's guidelines for logo usage for authorized vendors.
You're goin' down, *****. - WickedDrag0oN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Wrong most designers are behind their desks making legit and creative logos with their own mind, not swiping a pre existing design.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Panic has a pretty cool sense of humor/resignation about the whole issue...of course, they aren't getting sued by the guys who ripped them off..yet.
- sepherenia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Does this one look familiar to anyone else?: http://www.logomaid.com/detail.php?uid=4590&maincat=1
This one makes me think of Wishingline: http://www.logomaid.com/detail.php?uid=4546&maincat=1
Makes me think of ExpressionEngine: http://www.logomaid.com/detail.php?uid=4525&maincat=1
Also looks familiar: http://www.logomaid.com/detail.php?uid=4473&maincat=1
Reminiscent of Sun Microsystems: http://www.logomaid.com/detail.php?uid=4475&maincat=1
AND: http://www.logomaid.com/detail.php?uid=4362&maincat=1
Reminds me of something else...: http://www.logomaid.com/detail.php?uid=4413&maincat=1
... and that's only the first ten pages of their 'Unique' logos. Heh. - scottcropper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13It should have been to Daring Fireball but it wasn't. Go to http://daringfireball.net/2007/03/logomaid_rip_off which gives more info and links.
- sputza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@bgbs,
Please read more about copyright law here: http://www.copyright.gov/title17/
To learn how to read and write English visit: http://www.eslgo.com/classes.html - ThreeDee912, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@Oea420
Not just one person. Almost every logo on the LogoMaid site is a slightly modified logo made by someone else. They even made a Apple logo that said "Apple Store" directly under it and claimed it was theirs! SimpleBits, Panic Software, Apple Computer, even Microsoft!
Would you like to design something just to have someone else steal it and make $$$ from it? - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Well, this thread seems to have died down a little bit but I have some advice for everyone that I remember reading a while back.
When you make any creative works, print it/save it to disk and then put the printout ofr disk in an envelope and and send it to yourself via certified mail then just put the unopened mail someplace safe.
If you ever get into a dispute like this then you have a certified, unopened envelope with a government postmark containing your works. There is no way for anyone to dispute the date you produced the work. - Splashman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Absolutely pathetic.
Dude, here's a wild 'n crazy thought: how about actually researching US trademark law before blathering on?
For those who know something about the subject, your comments are laughably pathetic. - Splashman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13"Morons, your bus is leaving!"
Listen, dude, take a bit of friendly advice. With your distinctively insufficient grasp of English, you might as well be wearing a neon sign which reads "I am Paul Viluda!" At this point, you've hit bottom. Stop digging. - Splashman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Even worse, they've ripped the Apple logo:
http://www.logomaid.com/detail.php?uid=679&maincat=2
I've e-mailed Apple legal about this -- wouldn't hurt for y'all to do the same:
appletm@apple.com (from this page: http://www.apple.com/legal/contacts.html)
I included a screenshot, as I'll bet the moron who runs LogoMaid will pull it shortly.
I'm hoping all the publicity will get other companies to look for ripoffs of their own logos, and eventually get this chop-shop shut down. - Splashman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"bgbs" disappeared from the discussion right when the Apple knockoff was pulled from LogoMaid's site, and, I'm guessing, about 2.5 seconds after he received a friendly note from Apple Legal.
I'm guessing Mr. Viluda, aka "bgbs" isn't able to post at the moment because he's changing his underwear.
Unfortunately, SimpleBits and other smaller companies who have been ripped off don't have the same clout, so LogoMaid and other rip-off specialists will continue doing what they do best. - mkeefe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10People that are too poor to pay for a "real" designer.
- sputza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Looks like they took it down about 5 minutes after I emailed apple. I'm sure about 200 emails hit apple before mine but its nice to see someone get resolve.
- ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Wow, taken down already. Obviously, they don't plan on following bqbs' advice either.

'nuff said - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It is after they got called out about it on flickr
- ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@bqbs:
Tell you what. Contact Apple and ask them about it. You're wrong. Flat out wrong. - nevenmrgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Of course the two logos aren't the same. LogoMaid's is an ugly, unbalanced, ripped-off piece of crap.
- ThreeDee912, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Definitely not genuine...
- sputza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@bgbs:
Judging by your grammar, you are very uneducated. Please go back to school and graduate from high school before you leave any more comments.
Not to mention, you have very little knowledge of copyright law. If a company does not defend against copyright infringement, they risk loosing their copyright. - WickedDrag0oN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Maybe im insane but does this look like the Sony Ericsson symbol?

Who actually buys these knockoffs... - Pyrogen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Judging by that suite number, its a UPS Store or a Kinkos FedEx... Nice "Florida" office.

- they might have to sue SUN too. - cdharrison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"It's a shape. Don't get your panties in a wad people. Designers need to get out more if you think this is "copying"." - Gutspiller
Gutspiller: If you can't see the similarities, I HIGHLY suggest you get your cataracts checked out. Taking someone's work and selling it as your own is what's wrong here. It's one thing to borrow from an idea and turn it into something unique, but to blatantly copy someone else's work and sell it as your own is frickin' wrong. If you don't see anything wrong with it, that's your choice. A thief is still a thief no matter what. - Bamborzled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Dear bgbs (a.k.a lizart, fellatio, captainiglo):
You're not fooling anyone. We know you're the same person. A quick excursion through your Digg profile pages:
http://digg.com/users/lizart/profile
http://digg.com/users/fellatio/profile
http://digg.com/users/captainiglo/profile
Quickly reveals that these accounts were only created today. And they've only commented in this thread, and responded to each others' comments, flooding the discussion trying to defend LogoMaid. Sure, the first time you posted you might have been believed. But when you posted the fifth or sixth time, it became apparent that you were sockpuppets of Paul Viluda.
Thank you for revealing yourself, and I have *BLOCKED* all of your accounts. I suggest everyone does the same. - stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Ooh, a guessing game! My favorite!
Uummmm
XBox? - foamcow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8What is Dan Cederholm known for?
CSS. A very common thing in CSS is the curly bracket. {
Hence, he used them in his logo.
The block in the centre is a carry over of his older, very well known (in the trade) logo of 3 pixelled cubes.
Nobody is suggesting its bad form to seek inspiration from other places but for someone to blatantly copy the major element and then publically deny it is pretty laughable. Place the 2 logos on top of each other. The brackets match exactly. Now are you telling me that happened completely by accident? I doubt there would be quite the furore if it were just any old 4 brackets arranged in a square, the fact is they are exactly the same 4 brackets in the same font (Avenir, if anyone is interested)
The guy that ripped it off couldn't even be bothered to use a different font or position the brackets for himself.
All he's done is alter the middle element and in the process kill the balance of the thing anyway.
The logo is more than a pretty picture. It's Dan's brand. He markets his business and his services using it and is highly respected in the industry. Whilst not being a household name by any stretch if this logo started cropping up on "Spod & Sons Roofing" it's going to dilute Dan's brand. How can Dan promote and market the Simplebits brand as something people want if some ***** can sell an inferior knock off job for under $200?
As for simplicity, does complexity make something good? I bet those bleating about it just being 4 brackets and a box are those that buy the stereo system with the most lights and buttons regardless of what it's actually like.
Look at the Nike Logo, Apple logo, Audi, Mercedes... virtually any well known, 'classic' brand. They are all pretty simple. The (lack of) complexity is a moot point. It's irrelevant. - WickedDrag0oN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6How can you justify selling their IP? I could give a crap if its free PR for them. Did you or did you not get explicit permission to sell their IP? NO obviously not.
Quit trying to justify something that is wrong in every direction you look at it. - ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@merreborn:
Are you suggesting that its category or classification somehow renders it immune to copyright infringement and mark theft? If so, the law is very black and white on this one. They can't sell that logo. They can't even give away that logo. Apple owns it and has sole authority as to how it is used and dispersed. - thinkdrastic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Don't you mean "Can't get outraged over this if you sell pirated music files on for a profit."?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Headline: bqbs/vilords starts a flame; Hilarity ensues!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@blacksheep720
Just look for username "vilords". He's the *****. - AssProphet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Another suspiciously SUN like logo http://www.logomaid.com/detail.php?uid=4475&maincat=1&category=
- aboyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Not to mention, you have very little knowledge of copyright law. If a company does not defend against copyright infringement, they risk loosing their copyright."
Uh, no. Copyright doesn't work like that. You're thinking of trademark law. However, trademark law might apply here, if any of the logos are registered. I kinda doubt it, though. - cdharrison, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Those are some liberal designer freaks, probably gay too, who are getting hystarical like females on a hot day."
Gay, liberal designer freaks. Yeah, that's it. And I guess it's safe to assume that you're a trans-gendered Communist man-cave spelunker? -
