http://validator.w3.org/ - RickyTheRiot, on 09/30/2008, -2/+35This is a dreadful article. While the browsershots link is useful you would never use that for serious browser comparison as it returns a static image. There is no explanation why browsers display differently, no mention of the box model employed, or even the bugs and differences between them. The title references HTML but covers nothing about it and it's development, it's differences in each browser and any deprecated elements. It mentions validation but doesn't mention doctype and standards compliance.

I had this Digg link put into my shoutbox by someone, they really shouldn't as this is a steaming pile of *****. - Incidents, on 09/30/2008, -1/+13@digg.com
Errors found while checking this document as XHTML 1.0 Transitional!
Result: 120 Errors, 45 warning(s)
Whatever. - bcarl314, on 09/30/2008, -1/+10While I agree that you should check in "all popular browsers", I hardly feel "Chrome" with it's 0.75% market share can be considered "popular". It still has lots of bugs.
The important thing should be that your site is "accessible" to every browser. - unperfect, on 09/30/2008, -0/+9It's doing better than Microsoft.com:
176 Errors, 36 warning(s)
And apple.com has 1 Error . For all the fanboys out there. - ertz, on 09/30/2008, -2/+10Nope. I certainly don't care about supporting IE
- yuukanna, on 09/30/2008, -0/+7LoL.
Digg.com:
118 Errors, 46 warning(s) - motang, on 09/30/2008, -0/+7All but ***** IE 6...piece of crap needs to be put out of it's misery.
- revenz, on 09/30/2008, -0/+6"I’m not saying go hire a very expensive coder to fix your site to accommodate every browser known to man, but try to accommodate up til IE4-5. "
ie 4-5 ? ***** off, when i read that i thought the article must have been years old, to my surprise it isnt. we only support ie6 and above, and hopefully dropping ie6 soonish (god i hate ie6, and ie for that matter...) - petemcfraser, on 09/30/2008, -2/+7So is the site down or is it not compatible with FF 3?
LOL. - fearphage, on 10/01/2008, -0/+5Don't say thanks for this crap. No real web devs use only the tools provided in this article. He didn't mention firebug, dragonfly, ie dev toolbar, web inspector or anything else relevant. This article is a joke. Taking a snapshot of your page is useless if it doesn't tell you how it failed. No one in a commercial environment supports back to IE4. IE6 is the oldest thing generally supported and when IE8 drops and/or Microsoft drops support for IE6, IE7 will take its spot. The best and probably only useful part of this article was the w3c validation. Standards-compliant code is much more important than people realize to future-proof your site. Buried as inaccurate.
- inactive, on 09/30/2008, -1/+6Not compatible with digg :
Fatal error: out of dynamic memory in yy_create_buffer() in Unknown on line 0 - glockops, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4Today kids, we are going to learn about memory allocation.
- ismoke, on 09/30/2008, -1/+5buried!
- Radan, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4At least they had the sense to use Transitional. Good god I hate when people use doctypes like XHTML 1.0 Strict but then nest their code like they are going to make a freaking fishing net out of it.
- CCB0x45, on 09/30/2008, -1/+5This is retarded... the w3 validator is not a good way to test website compatibility.
Really the best way to test website compatibility is to run a virtual machine... I find that the best way is to use OS X because you can: Run OS X, test Safari, Firefox, Opera for OS X, then run the virtual machines that Microsoft releases for free to run IE6, IE7, and IE8 under virtual box, and on those virtual machines you are able to install Safari for Windows, Chrome, Firefox for Windows, and Opera for Windows... you can have all of them up at once time if you are on a fast enough computer(easily done on my MPB), and just hit refresh on all of them. You can even create a Ubuntu virtual machine for Firefox and Konquerer although I am too lazy to do that and just test every once in a while on my linux laptop. - smackydoodle, on 09/30/2008, -1/+5Just because your site validates doesn't mean it looks the same across all browsers. It just means your syntax is correct.
- s0ldad0, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4lol, theirs isn't...
- Wang, on 09/30/2008, -1/+4Buried - in future link directly to the url, and don't make people go via your blog (which is now down)...
- sam0007, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3Why is this so high in digg? Not worthy in my opinion, sorry. Oh and the site uses stock icons without giving credits to their author.
- netzdamon, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3It's good with the only two browsers that really matter, elinks and netcat.
- Gavagai80, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3Really, any IE 4 user you see in your logs is a robot pretending to be an IE 4 user. The real users have long since lost their computers to a pile of viruses.
- MondayJBlack, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3Moral. Morale is what you lose working with IE.
- bibowski, on 09/30/2008, -1/+3Fatal error: out of dynamic memory in yy_create_buffer() in Unknown on line 0
Great site. Thanks.... - xErath, on 09/30/2008, -1/+3OMG !!!
Suport deprecated arcane IE4 and 5 ?
No real mention of using web standards (just a reference to the validator) ?
No mention about the 4 major rendering engines (trident, gecko, webkit, presto) which are already available in all platforms (IE with wine) ?
A mention to browsershots (imagine a developer doing many changes... ) ?
Next time, the author should do his homework and spare the readers of such a lame misleading article.
Buried... - timusca, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2The free version only tests 2 browsers...
- init100, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2In addition, unlike the author, I do not consider IE4 or IE5 "popular browsers". If I would make a public web site, I would completely ignore them and painfully accept that maybe I cannot yet ignore IE6, even though I would like to.
On a personal web site, I would try it in Firefox alone, and ignore the rest. All browsers based on Webkit, Gecko or Presto likely work fine if it works fine in Firefox. I might even run browser detection and show any IE user a message that they use the dreadful Internet Exploder, with links to download Firefox, Safari and Opera, as well as a "proceed at your own risk anyway" link. - Karmavs, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2Is it the proprietary search box code?
- Fluffycheese, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2I've encountered a few rendering glitches in chrome involving transparent png's, while safari was perfect. I wasn't able to recreate it so I don't know what was wrong, but morale of the story is you can never take anything for granted in the world of web development
- svivian, on 09/30/2008, -1/+3Plus this: "try to accommodate up til IE4-5"
Useless time-wasting right there, those browsers make up less than 0.1% of net users. - MondayJBlack, on 09/30/2008, -1/+2That blog post isn't compatible with my eyes
- MWeather, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1Chances are, if it looks OK in Firefox 3, it'll look OK in Firefox 2. That is, if your code is standards compliant (sans IE hacks).
- fffizzz, on 09/30/2008, -1/+2apparently, it's not compatible with itself.
Fatal error: out of dynamic memory in yy_create_buffer() in Unknown on line 0 - stateofmind, on 09/30/2008, -2/+3"And if it's not compatible, we'll send you a free go-kart!"
- inactive, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1And curl + cat!
- jmcneilly, on 09/30/2008, -1/+2Digg blew up the browser corrector...
- Karmavs, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1Divs with opacity, with transparent PNGs in them (or as their background) cause issues only in chrome. there are also issues with rounded corners, box & text shadows (actually, there are no text shadows at all.)
- scoot2006, on 09/30/2008, -1/+2Dugg for go-kart.
- svivian, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1It's still more than all IE versions under 6.
- fearphage, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1You can run FF2, FF3, Opera 8, Opera 9, Safari 3, Chrome, and one version of IE all from the same box. The other IEs can be had through virtualization (vmware, virtualbox, virtualpc). You don't need a service to take screenshots for you. You should be seeing and accessing the live page for yourself. If you are developing in a non-windows environment, there are a host of applications to gain access to the same browser spread. You have access to all the browsers you want if you put some effort into it.
@MWeather: Test in both. Sure it /should/ work but there are bugs in every browser. Firefox is no exception. It takes 60 seconds to open FF2 alongside FF3. I think it is worth it. - glockops, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1alistapart.com
Don't Make me Think (http://www.sensible.com/index.html)
w3schools.com
nettuts.com - Radan, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Well, since it's based on webkit, you could in theory just test the page in Safari and then it should render very similarly in Chrome (note how I may be entirely wrong about this since I haven't actually had the chance to test Chrome thoroughly)
- atgmac, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1My site doesn't work in ANY version of IE. I'm particularly pleased about that.
- Wandrer, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1https://browsershots.org/http://digg.com/design/Is ...
- inactive, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1Instead of doing that, why not go to sleep? No one is going to read your blog anyway. No one cares.
- calebh, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Ugh, I only make my websites IE6+ compatible. I already knew all these tips. Anyway, Total Validator's screenshot service is much faster then that of browser shot:
http://www.totalvalidator.com/validator/ValidatorF ...
It should also be noted that some of these screenshot sites using multiple IEs, and conditional comments don't work. - vbekkerm, on 09/30/2008, -1/+1"Fatal error: out of dynamic memory in yy_create_buffer() in Unknown on line 0" -- nice job!! :)
- Jaschoslav, on 09/30/2008, -1/+1Fatal error: out of dynamic memory in yy_create_buffer() in Unknown on line 0
Also remember to make your website compatible with the internet should people decide to visit it. - sfradel, on 09/30/2008, -0/+0Fatal error also for me :)
