Odds are, if you can afford a Ferrari, you own about 10,000 barrels of crude commodities, anyway. - Garage81, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14seriously?
of course they will survive the fossil fuel crunch. the people who buy these cars only drive them a few thousand miles typically a year... - 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13People who buy Ferraris don't care about MPG.
Frankly, I'm shocked at how much of the assembly is automated. I thought it was supposed to be a hand-built car! - Mousse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Where are the Oompa Loompas?
- hokieaudi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11If you can afford a Ferrari chances are that you don't particularly care about what fuel costs. An oil change can be a four figure event, the price of fuel is miniscule compared to the various and sundry things that go into the care and feeding of a silver prancing horse.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"With photos" is the same as saying "server down".
- SoCalDissident, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Well, technically, it IS a FIAT factory, since they own Ferrari
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrari - pype, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Yes, but the tour is WAY faster
- MadOgre, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Yeah, I was going to buy the Ferrari, but then I passed a petrol station and said "well screw that!" I can't afford a gallon of high octain that's twenty five cents more than it was 5 months ago! These guys are all nutters. So I decided to go with a Diesel VW Golf instead. Much more sensible. Of course track days are going to be a let down. Can't have everything.
- atariby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm sure every other F1 Team would like to see it too!
- Krush, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Great digg. You'd think people around here would appreciate a company like Ferrari. Founded by Enzo to build cars that offered the greatest driving experience, putting the driver and the joy of driving first and foremost. A lot has changed in Maranello over the years but the ideals the company was built on haven't. Even when times were tough and Ford was offering a kings ransom for the company, Ferrari never sold out. Here's a company that builds a product 99% of the world can't afford yet, 99% of there product is sold before it even hits the assembly line. Just stop by a dealer and sit in a Ferrari, you can tell this is a company that cuts no corners and actually cares about every detail of every car that rolls out of the factory. Now before you say that it's all about money, talk to one of there factory workers (or watch an interview), in Maranello it's a dream to work in the Ferrari factory and they have a passion for producing the greatest cars in the world.
- dmitry, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8oh you're so clever you funny guy
- tabledesk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5My girlfriend was in the Maranello showroom and folded/cracked one car's side mirror the wrong way when she leaned on it.
Wonder who got that one. - Krush, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually a Ferrari is not a Fiat in the same way that a Porsche is a VW. Fiat owns a majority stake in Ferrari but it's conditional and Ferrari is runs it's own program. If it were as simple as Fiat owning Ferrari then there would have been no need for Fiat to buy Maserati from Ferrari, they would have already owned it.

- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you guys get discovery HD theater there is a show on there called Rides. Its usually on at night on weekends.
A couple weeks ago they did a full tour of the lamborghini factory. - ninjapirate350, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How can you compare a Toyota to a Ferrari? Certainly Toyota factories have more automation/automated processes, but a Human can catch things a robot can't. It's very simple to run a part that is inconsistent through a machine that is not built to catch those inconsistencies. Toyotas are built for the masses, so of course they need faster production.
In a Ferrari factory they are building less cars, so the human operator is actually better for catching problems than a robot would be.
However, if Ferrari were to start building everyday cars for the common man, I'm sure their factory would be just as exciting to watch. - kiboflavin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You guys sure crushed my server .. it should be back up and going now
- NakedSnake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4A lot like being in a FIAT factory, in Maranello Italy?
- londoneconomist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd like to see their Formula One factory as well; surely there's lots of interesting stuff happening in that place.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Simpsons showed this in this season! Homer had to get Mr. Burn's Ferrari but left it on a pillar! ;)
- gyrfalcon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@5thfreedom "Frankly, I'm shocked at how much of the assembly is automated. I thought it was supposed to be a hand-built car!"
Why would you want a hand-built car? Most people can't change your oil correctly, and you want them building cars... Best to leave things to robotics or true artisans. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2pretty cool, but i still like the all glass VW factory in Dresden where they build the Phaeton...

Too bad they dont show their production factory. they make lots of parts, not just for their own cars. they make the suspension for the new Z06 for instance. - alexcount, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Italy, Ferrari's are made in Italy
- ChippyLasticko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice digg
- fofusion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ohh god how I wish I could give you multiple diggs ;-)
nice link. - WolfwoodX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Beyond Tomorrow showed off the McLaren factory not to long ago. After seeing that thing, all other factories suck, period!
http://www.mclaren.com/technologycentre/ - NakedSnake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, that's what I said?
- scruffmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow...my dream job...:drools:
- Krush, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wrong. Not worth my time, just google it and apologize for your ignorance.
- GhostRidr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wrong. Fiat bought Maserati from DeTomaso (who was the last Italian car manufacturer to still be owned by the founder when DeTomaso died a couple of years ago). Enzo sold out to Fiat a long time ago.
- sinner0423, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Because Toyota has been touted & awarded to be one of the best car producing companies in the world. I hear their production methods have some insane effficiency to them; it's supposedly close to perfection.
- 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0So if an artisan builds a car, does he not use his hands?
- Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1actually, i wanted to check out the ferrari, BMWs, and Porche factories while i was in germany...but never got around to any of em.
- simpleid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@alexcount
Don't speak out of ignorance, Italy is a matter of hours away from Germany taking the trains. Next time first research, then speak. - pype, on 10/12/2007, -13/+10LOL - I love the irony of the Pump And Save advertising in the middle of the page.
Excess and Wastefulness are lovingly assembled by hand!
Are Ferrari et al even going to survive the fossil fuel crunch? - tomciob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0i think a toyota factory would be more exciting in terms of automation and consistency, last i heard (summer 05) they were like 13 hours faster in producing a car than it's closest competitor nissan at the time.
- daRoach, on 10/12/2007, -12/+8Saying "powned" is redundant. It's either pwned or owned.
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Ferrari... Sure, it's a decent car, but for that price, I'd rather get something way better. Italian cars are overrated.
Yeah, baby. http://www11.porsche.com/all/tour/?market=international&path=home/about/tour/overview
Porsches are, with the exception of the body, of course, hand-assembled. A true quality car. Ferraris, on the other hand, aren't even painted by hand! - dustjacket, on 10/12/2007, -6/+199 diggs and down!
that was fast. - shadcrkd, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1How about you give me a Ferrari instead.
- theLEGENDisBACK, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0i want a ferrari
