Incredibly Strange 3D Rotating Website Menu
screenvader.com — When you move the mouse, you orbit this menu. It can get very disorienting. The content of the website is equally confusing.

- shaggomatic, on 10/12/2007, -10/+530I actually think this menu is pretty cool. Didn't really have much trouble using it, and enjoy the uniqueness.
- tw0bit, on 10/12/2007, -12/+108if the menu didn't disorient you, try clicking on the bottom left square...that will do it for sure
- lordmetroid, on 10/12/2007, -124/+20Excuse me for sounding noobish... But how do one create these kinds of pieces of work?
Ohh dear, I am loosing the grip of my CS-geekiness. :( - Scynet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+50Lordmetroid:
Flash? :P - stupidStan, on 10/12/2007, -11/+101@lordmetroid
they use Adobe Flash
Which means you lost your grip on cs-geekiness a while ago, and you are LOSING your grip on English spelling... - thefat, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Hint: move your mouse slow. It was easy to use for me.
- Sarevok9, on 10/12/2007, -13/+7wow.... thats the craziest website ever *bookmarked*
- xxTazxx, on 10/12/2007, -27/+14cool? hell yes! practical? hell no!
- lordmetroid, on 10/12/2007, -11/+29I am aware that it is flash... Just never bothered looking into it and how to create anything in it. Hence I thought it would be cool to do so and asked for some helping guidelines of how to do so.
- Lotuslew, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6@thefat
But on the rest of the internets, I can move my mouse fast - geoken, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20"I am aware that it is flash... Just never bothered looking into it and how to create anything in it. Hence I thought it would be cool to do so and asked for some helping guidelines of how to do so."
If you've never used flash it would be pretty much impossible to explain how to do this. You would have to read and understand a beginner flash book before you could even understand the concepts used to make that. - btipling, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22The positioning of the letters around each other is three dimensional as long as the cursor is in the middle of the screen, if you move toward the edges of your screen the position is kind of random. The actual letters however are not 3D, they are always facing you - 3D is technically not possible in Flash, but you can fake it. The fade out effect on the letters is pretty cool too, I imagine that was done with a class, of which each letter is an instance and there is some kind of 'distance from screen' calculated based on where the cursor is that transforms the letter by increment from a letter into a blob.
Very cool and original, and moves smoothly without eating a lot of CPU. - guinunez, on 10/12/2007, -5/+47 btipling: "3D is technically not possible in Flash, but you can fake it"
Your statements are not actually accurate.
3D is possible on flash, maybe not in a native way, but you can code it by your self. Here is a tutorial on the basics of 3D math (sadly, it is on Spanish):
http://idam.ladei.com.ar/articulo.php?archivo=Flash3D&nombre=Flash%203D&tipo=multi&ver=0
a working example, based on the previous work:
http://www.inka.com.ar/es/campamento_virtual.htm
Here is a more advanced tutorial, this time on English:
http://www.kirupa.com/developer/actionscript/3dindex.htm
And if you don't like flash, and you are a css/html fan, here are some experiments to make html 3D:
http://idam.ladei.com.ar/Experimentos/HTML3D/
Essentially, all 3D on a computer is fake, since the screen is a 2D device. What you do is to make your brain believe that he is looking is a 3D environment by transforming 3D coordinates into a 2D system - unclesaamm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28Does anyone else think that the programs themselves on the website are cool in their own right?
- r0ck3tm4nn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is sweet. The blur/focus effect sells it. Reminds of playing the Homeworld series of games for some weird reason!
- Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3This website is the epitome of all that is wrong with flash websites.
- PRlME, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13@ guinunez
3D in flash is possible (it was not for the last 10 years)
Go to http://blog.papervision3d.org/
its the first example of true 3D in flash. - Sirfuxalot69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yea i agree it was really kinda interesting and i enjoyed the music as well as the weird artistic items
- jdc760, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It would be awesome if there was some sort of "snapping" feature. Awesome concept though.
- zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very trippy. Feels like I'm in some sort of "Brazil" like thing.
Subliminal images... makes me want to kill... - gmweezel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a friggen 3d limacon; sorry for the double post but no diggs on the other.
From the looks of it, the rotation is based on limacons.
http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Curves/Limacon.html - stockjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is an example of radical design that is no way intended to be intuitive or easy to navigate. Typical of some flash based websites that get so much into the desgn and effects they forget the concept of usability.
- ufia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Amazing work! I'm curious how they did that 3D effect in Flash.
On a side note, the lyrics when you click the song Sergent Instructor is from the movie Full Metal Jacket in French.

- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@BryanTheCrow
all swfs can be perfectly decompiled to flas
I posted that for learning purposes only, anything that is done with it I can not be held responsible.
Also please don't rip people's work off, at the very least, if you use it then tell who you got it from.
- Aliasing, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35"incredibly strange 3d rotating .... very disorienting."
Clearly you never worked with a Silicon Graphics GUI.- cantankerous, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Holy blast from the reality engine past!
- rarun98, on 10/12/2007, -14/+19wow that was nice, now all we need to see, is someone do that for an OS.
- 10001110101, on 10/12/2007, -3/+107I hear you.. Screw Vista/Ubuntu/OSX.. I want my Sci-Fi OS right now!
- cantankerous, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Well hunt around, it does exist for variety or OS's. It's always been a bit too clunky and linear.

- LakeshoreBaby, on 10/12/2007, -41/+4Reminds me of how the media trumps up Killer Bee stories every couple of years to keep us terrified and wanting the gov'ment to save us.
- Lyph4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+71Yeah, when I see 3d rotating website user interfaces, the first thing I think is "Killer Bees."
But seriously, this brings up a major bug with Digg.. logging in with multiple tabs open returns you to the WRONG story in that tab. - Hoov, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16The trick is to the log in to the last tab you opened. Then simply hit refresh on all the un-logged in tabs to stay at that story.
- mrchin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Or once you've logged in on a particular tab, it'll set you at a different tab's story. Just go back one page in the browser and refresh. Should be fine. Then just refresh on the other tabs.
- jcims, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's still broken and super annoying...why would you use server-side state for that?
- liquidarts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2MAJOR bug?
- Lyph4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+71Yeah, when I see 3d rotating website user interfaces, the first thing I think is "Killer Bees."
- daveheinzel, on 10/12/2007, -7/+27Cool in concept, but not very practical. Reminds me of 5 years ago when everyone was making their own flash-based navigation systems. They looked awesome, but you had to spend so much time just figuring out what you can click before actually getting anywhere.
- cnidog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+49This site is art. It's obviously not intended to a utilitarian exercise in practicality
- Nogger, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5"It can get very disorienting. The content of the website is equally confusing."
Sounds like great design decisions. Look! Shiny! - chrisabraham, on 10/12/2007, -6/+40Only unemployed people, art students, or people in "the biz" have the curiosity and time to really appreciate a unique interface like this... that is why UI rules are so basic.
- cantankerous, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Jeepers man, you forgot drop out coffee house poets.
- underrun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Pretty cool. I agree that interfaces WORK better when they are more simple but things like this have their place too. Possibly not as the primary navigation system but maybe as a quick "scrolling" browse for a file/video/link among many.
- illegalcortex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@chrisabraham
Somehow, I find this strangely applicable: http://www.worldbeardchampionships.com/Gallery/gallery.html
- ryancecilsmith, on 10/12/2007, -11/+0That's why UI rules aren't in the biz.
- Hemingrubbish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32the blur is well done
- silverbolt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2An Invert Y option is fine too.
- COlson87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31Okay. Seriously... These last two videos in the top row on the "Media and Algorithms" menu... Man, these really scare me. Watching them loop with these crazy beats & sound effects reminds me a lot of The Ring, except they're actually scary.
Damn... Creative guy.- Peynis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I love them
did he do the music samples himself?
if not, I'd love to know where they're from - cruzlee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2These videos are so cool. He uses layered video and creepy sound effects to establish something of a cynical view at human life. It somehow reminds me of requiem for a dream.
- wvannus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4It's a chick behind it all.
- CanceledCzech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The first thing I thought of when I saw those videos was, "Damn, I should get high and watch this", especially on the second video. Really cool stuff.
- wvannus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why the digg down? The designer is a girl.
- Peynis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I love them
- phoenixrip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14That is spectacular!!
And I find it quite easy and enjoyable to use.
(I don't think I'v ever described a 'menu' as enjoyable before!) - goodbeershow, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7I'm impressed. Looks the messed up in linx though.

- havokzero, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Do NOT navigate this site! This is Dharma mind control at its worst... very disturbing, to say the least. Buried for propaganda.
- fawker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i would suggest you check out the looping housewife duties and I challenge you not to see the looping pornography.. it appears that in between 50 and 60's reels he has a first person view of a male engaged in doggie style.. wow.. i am impressed!
- SuperCujo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How many people went back and watched the housewife one again?
And I'd like to know how you found that pr0n, cos I didn't see it.
- SuperCujo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How many people went back and watched the housewife one again?
- asif3000, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0so.... where's the source code - i want it!
:-)- Peynis, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2you may be able to get it with a .SWF decompiler
- b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17booo. If he doesn't want you to have the source code, don't just take it anyway.

Serious websites should avoid using Flash unless they can get navigation to work - cpbrown, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is an awesome site! I love it :D
- Nebelwerfer, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1I need to add that to www.websitesthatsuck.com. That is the worst menu ever.
- vhtrading, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Yep. These types of flashed-based "Mystery Meat Navigation" menus were in style around 2000-2001, and for the most part died out right afterwards (thankfully). Menus like this may look cool, but try adding them like this to a site such as google or amazon and you'll see how poor the usability actually is. Buried as lame.
- roinur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5where can i download his music? :)
- DCGaymer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Incredibly innovative work.
- diggsIt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed, I was a kid again in the 60's. We used to have the round Hoover vacuum cleaner that was in one of the videos. The Military-Industrial Complex, is alive and well.
- vinieux, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Why am I being dug down? Once you click on a link and enter a page, there is no navigation whatsoever in my Firefox, the back button is greyed out, and obviously there are no right click options either. What's the point of bells and whistles if I can't navigate this 'Awesome' site??
- mr2master, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1OMG this thing is amazing!!!!

- insomniacpyro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That urban mix thing gave my epilepsy.
A nice interface, although I'd personally add in some barriers so you can't twist the whole thing to where it's unreadable and you can't easily tell where you are in relation to the front of the menu. - Jeffler, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5Buried as innaccurate, this doesn't come up at all on Lynx or IE 1.0!
- Jeffler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh come on, learn to get a joke!

- koweja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This reminds me of the old VRML, but prettier.
It's neat and all, but it would be really annoying for things like this to be the standard navigation style (like people were claiming VRML would be). User interfaces are supposed to be basic so people can get to the content easily. Complex navigation like this makes it harder and more time consuming to get to the content. Now, for certain applications this type of navigation works well - for demos such as this and for sites where the navigation is part of the "experience", such as on movie promo sites.- webjoseph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think that was the same language they said when they developed the GUI you're staring at. Drag-and-drop... Doubleclick... Minimize/Maximize... HTML forms.. *gasp* Without creative excercises like this, we can never evolve to the next order of UI. Fast forward 50 years, and teaching us how to use the new GUI will be like teaching our grandmothers how to double-click. Just look at the video game controllers these days... and we thought we were slick when we did: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start.
