Incredible Firefox Keyboard Shortcuts You May Not Know About
jeetblog.com — Excellent shortcuts! I knew only 3 of them. All of the shortcuts are quite useful.
- 3485 diggs
- digg it
- Odenized, on 04/12/2008, -45/+47Always great to know more about the best web browser. Thanks!
- jordanmac, on 04/12/2008, -20/+6why was this buried?
- travis1982, on 04/12/2008, -19/+33cause he sounds like a gay
- Slade605, on 04/12/2008, -7/+1First one in sight.
- andburn1, on 04/12/2008, -16/+6Like a gay? Gay is an adjective, and you're an *****. It's sickening that you'd bury someone because he "sounds like a gay." What the ***** is wrong with you? You think that's funny? And that you've been dugg up!? All you ignorant, homophobic bastards can go castrate yourselves.
- archer104, on 04/12/2008, -3/+5I love scotch. Scotchy scotch scotch. Here it goes down. Down into my belly. Mm mm mmh.
- mradules, on 04/12/2008, -2/+2Slade's probably British. They use the word "gay" as a noun.
Still, you're right about the whole homophobic bastards part. - ruddy, on 04/12/2008, -2/+3we know who the queer in the room is...
- Verz, on 04/13/2008, -0/+2That comment is the reason people make fun of gays.
- Mongo61, on 04/13/2008, -0/+1Margaret Cho had a gay friend and her mother would ask (heavy Korean accent), "is he THE gay?"
- Slade605, on 04/13/2008, -0/+1@ mradules Read who you are commenting about before putting in a name
- borninda818, on 04/12/2008, -0/+5I thought he could have worded it better as well but your comment is a little creepy. Buried!!! :D
- yahoofrom, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1homophobe!
- homercles337, on 04/12/2008, -1/+3Because the macophiles here feel that safari is superior to FF.
- travis1982, on 04/12/2008, -19/+33cause he sounds like a gay
- HigherLogic, on 04/12/2008, -2/+4Think about it for a second and you'll get it.
- Tiak, on 04/12/2008, -3/+21As this is a crappy list of only a handful of features... I figure I might as well post the other common ones here:
ctrl+W - one of the most used, closes tabs.
ctrl+=/ctrl+- - Rarely useful, but occasionally so, zoom in/out
F5 - Reload.
F6 - Select address bar
Ctrl+Click - open in new tabs, for those without fancy mice (laptop users).
Ctrl+Shift+Tab - go back a tab... No clue why they didn't mention it in the ctrl+tab entry.
Ctrl+P - print
Ctrl+Shift+X - Toggle right alignment of text... I have no clue why this would be useful...
Ctrl+S - save page- SonicAD, on 04/12/2008, -6/+7Not just RTFA, but read the f****** title: "Incredible Firefox Keyboard Shortcuts You May Not Know About"
I think pretty much everyone knows that Ctrl+P = print, thanks. This isn't about the obvious ones.- Netrilix, on 04/12/2008, -0/+5Well, not everyone knows about ctrl+w, F6, and ctrl+click (I only knew middle click, which is useless for a laptop).
- cr3ative, on 04/12/2008, -0/+7Try mashing left and right click at the same time on your laptop. That's middle click for most modern laptops.
- jerrygofixit, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1Yeah I didn't know about ctrl+w, i'm surprised they didn't mention quick search by pressing /, thats a good one a lot of people don't know about
- Netrilix, on 04/12/2008, -0/+5Well, not everyone knows about ctrl+w, F6, and ctrl+click (I only knew middle click, which is useless for a laptop).
- dubloe7, on 04/12/2008, -0/+4ctrl+l is go to address bar, and its easier than f6 in some cases
- bobbyi, on 04/12/2008, -0/+4There's also alt-D.
- P373Y, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1not when i never touch the right ctrl key.
- dalos, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2ctrl+=/ctrl+ actually increases/decreases font size not zooms in or out
- jaznova, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Maybe its the FF3B5 but it appears to zoom images et al
Ctrl + Scroll wheel does the same thing- YoctoYotta, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1Correct, images don't zoom in v2 (only text increase/decrease in font size), but it's been a semi-supported feature in the v3 beta releases since July 07.
- jaznova, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Maybe its the FF3B5 but it appears to zoom images et al
- yahoofrom, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1Alt+F4 - hide porn when your mother knocks the door
- Firehed, on 04/13/2008, -0/+1Ctrl/Cmd+L for fellow mouse-haters will jump you into the address bar to type in your URL. Like most of these shortcuts, that applies just as well in most other browsers (though as you might expect, Microsoft managed to screw up the implementation in IE).
- SonicAD, on 04/12/2008, -6/+7Not just RTFA, but read the f****** title: "Incredible Firefox Keyboard Shortcuts You May Not Know About"
- themastersb, on 04/12/2008, -0/+9I think I will find the ctrl+shift+T most useful. Now I just have to remember to use it.
- jerrygofixit, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1i think that ctrl + 1-9 to pick which tab is pretty cool
- madcreator, on 04/12/2008, -0/+9I just learned a really useful one earlier today. Not exactly a 'keyboard' shortcut though. If there's a website address typed on the page but not linked to, you can highlight the address and then drag it onto the current page's tab or into the empty space to the right of the current tabs to open it in a new tab. In fact, this will even work if you highlight and drag just the name of the website onto the tab bar, for instance highlighting and dragging google will take you to their site (Only works with .com I believe).
That reminds me that you can also open a new tab by double clicking in an empty space on the tab bar. - Ataxia2008, on 04/12/2008, -0/+9Is there any way to change Firefox from auto adding .org with .co.uk or something?
- vptel, on 04/12/2008, -7/+1God, why don't you just marry firefox!
- Neiby, on 04/12/2008, -0/+5You sound exactly like my five-year-old son.
- kjackelen05, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Then why don't you marry an ice cream sandwich!
- Hexxagonal, on 04/12/2008, -3/+1I'm consufed by Odenized statement. I clicked on the link and it went to something about Firefox; however, he said the greatest browser in the world.... why isn't it an opera article? Confused?!?!
- jordanmac, on 04/12/2008, -20/+6why was this buried?
- Happy_Phantom, on 04/12/2008, -11/+75This article gets a Ctrl-D from me.
- madeingermany, on 04/12/2008, -2/+62I give it a Ctrl +W at most.
- Tiak, on 04/12/2008, -9/+2I give this comment an F6 (reply button loaded weird before).
- megamod, on 04/12/2008, -22/+5Are you seriously booking this as your favorite??? These were the most obvious shortcuts ever....like wth if you didn't know these than you most likely won't be able to find the site in your favorite list anyways...n00b
- Avngr75, on 04/12/2008, -2/+3Buried for ??? and n00b, but especially for "like wth." If you type "like" in that context there, you lose, forever.
- pastaq, on 04/12/2008, -9/+6I gave it a ctrl+F4 for failing to mention ctrl+F4.
- j0etb, on 04/12/2008, -2/+1Ctrl + W is better
- Ratty, on 04/12/2008, -3/+2That's a Windows shortcut, not a Firefox shortcut.
- xTrScoops, on 04/12/2008, -0/+0I too would...the only one I didn't know was 2...and that's not even short cut because... you can just hit F6
- Tribis, on 04/12/2008, -0/+4Really? Your going to bookmark this article? Why not just look at Mozilla's own documentation on shortcuts?
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Shortcuts - mikehrp, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1I learned ALT+D from Morgan Webb back in the day on 'The Screen Savers'
One of my all time favorites. - paranoidfox, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1I prefer Ctrl+L. Then I navigate away.
- brad3378, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1I give it an F-11
- madeingermany, on 04/12/2008, -2/+62I give it a Ctrl +W at most.
- MattJF317, on 04/12/2008, -11/+350You only knew 3? Your digg membership should be revoked.
- antdude, on 04/12/2008, -18/+3I don't use Firefox and I don't know why I am reading this one. :)
- duckyinc, on 04/12/2008, -3/+22because it's on the front page and you are mindless
- Persian5Life, on 04/12/2008, -2/+1dug for the harsh burn!
- antdude, on 04/13/2008, -0/+1True. I don't have a brain.
- duckyinc, on 04/12/2008, -3/+22because it's on the front page and you are mindless
- davidrools, on 04/12/2008, -1/+9Mouse gestures rock if you're into firefox efficiency without needing the keyboard. For example, drag a link up w/ the right mouse button to open it in a new tab, drag up-right or up-left to flip between tabs, etc. Once you learn em you can't live without em.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/39- doeboy, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1I also love my mouse gestures, although personally, I prefer 'all in one' mouse gestures: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/12
- bitbytebit, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1yeah I went back to opera (the mouse gesture pioneer) for a while before I found out there was a firefox addon for them ..I too use all in one . .this was years back
- cyclopropene, on 04/12/2008, -0/+17Who would have thought that PageUp scrolls up the page?
- lennybird, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1I only knew of Ctrl + T and middle mouse button. I only wish I had knew of Ctrl + Shift + Tab earlier...
- antdude, on 04/12/2008, -18/+3I don't use Firefox and I don't know why I am reading this one. :)
- HHP2K, on 04/12/2008, -3/+47I had no idea about the delete key removing search history.. very useful.
- TurboGeek, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1Same here... That was a new one..
- Peko, on 04/12/2008, -3/+3nevermind.
- Slagtits, on 04/12/2008, -0/+48Good for removing your porn history...........................or so I'm told.
- im2emo4myshrt, on 04/12/2008, -0/+4Yeah for a second I thought I was the only one who was thinking that. Then I remembered I'm on digg.
- tj111, on 04/12/2008, -1/+22No more searches for apples showing up as "asian ass porn".
- worthone, on 04/12/2008, -0/+7I get 'apple porn'. Rule 34, don't ask.
- Ataxia2008, on 04/12/2008, -0/+7I have FF delete my private data each time I close FF ;)
Or just Ctrl + Shift + Del - oojamaflip2006, on 04/12/2008, -0/+8The really useful thing about delete removing individual urls from the search history is you can make it look like you have nothing to hide by keeping your non porn urls in the history list it looks like you only go to those sites.
Re-reading that / makes me sound like i have lots of experience of this O.o- bowe, on 04/12/2008, -1/+1or use stealther which keeps everything out of the history.
- CarStan, on 04/12/2008, -5/+1i've waited years for this. Now i dont have to delete my whole search history after searching for "black underage midget ***** by dog in the butt'
- Neiby, on 04/12/2008, -1/+2Seriously, that is one of the reasons I can't stand Opera. This one simple feature is amazingly useful. It's really annoying to have every little domain I visit in the autocomplete history, especially if it's a site that I probably won't go to again. I like to keep my history small and relevant, which FF 2.0 does. I also like that the position of a site doesn't change based on when you viewed it, like IE does. I like to know that if I go to Digg and want to scroll down my history to it, it will always be in the same spot. It just makes things easier.
However, FF 3.0 changes that behavior and it is extremely annoying. - dood, on 04/12/2008, -1/+2According to the official Mozilla site, it's shift-delete. Without shift, the delete key works like backspace. I can confirm that works on the OS X version of Firefox 3, anyway.
- bowe, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1well it works the way as in the article in firefox 3
- morninglorii, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1Thank you so much. I had always wanted to get rid of some stuff from my autocomplete (nothing bad - I had typed a bunch of fake permutations of my email address in some email form, and from then on, whenever I would start typing my email address, all the permutations would show up above the real one on autocompletes, and I didn't want to have to clear all my data just to fix this).
When I saw this trick on the site, my heart jumped. When I found it not working, it sank again. But you fixed it. I owe you my life.
- liviaokokok, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1That was the only one i didn't know either...
- ly4u, on 04/12/2008, -15/+7Thnx for posting, that's useful
- GOJOE, on 04/12/2008, -3/+39When i learned about ctrl+shift+t i was shocked to find that i had could of possible lived without it.Nothing new here for me, but a well written article
- SuperMoses, on 04/12/2008, -0/+6I just opened this tab after I found out about it and dugg you up
- Soave, on 04/12/2008, -0/+7You can also middle-click anywhere in any blank spot in the row where the tabs are to open the previously closed tab. Helpful if you're just using your mouse and don't want to switch to the keyboard.
- MonkCanatella, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1Good for one handed operation.
- mmortal03, on 04/12/2008, -0/+3Oh, and I forgot about middle clicking on the Address Bar Go arrow and the Search Bar magnifying glass.
- Ataxia2008, on 04/12/2008, -0/+3Ctrl+Shift+T - Amazing. I used to have to make a new tab, right-click and select "Undo Close Tab"
Thanks mate- liviaokokok, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1yeah same here, I didn't know the shortcut..
I need to disable my keyboard to stop going to Dvorak when i push Ctrl+Shift... It gets annoying when i push Ctrl+Shift+Y
- liviaokokok, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1yeah same here, I didn't know the shortcut..
- awseft, on 04/12/2008, -1/+1Ctrl + F12 does the same thing.
- vorbalhorde, on 04/12/2008, -2/+1Okay, digg me down for this. *could have possibly
Also, Opera has a trash can with all recently closed tabs, still cached, with browsing order intact, even in the same tab location.- bowe, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1firefox keeps browsing order too.
- zephyr42, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1The shortcuts I use the most are CTRL+Tab and CTRL+shift+Tab
- Lutremi, on 04/12/2008, -7/+28All this freakin time I've been using right click -> open in new tab.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 04/12/2008, -0/+20You can also middle-mouse click an existing tab, and the tab will close.
- DeathfireD, on 04/12/2008, -0/+7or double click the tab to close it. You can also double click the outer bar that holds the tabs to open a new tab bar.
- Soave, on 04/12/2008, -0/+4Ooh that second one's pretty useful. Thanks!
- DeathfireD, on 04/12/2008, -0/+4hmm scratch off the double click tab close feature. Looks like they removed it. The double click the outer bar that holds the tabs to open a new tab bar still works though.
- Mardi, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1and you can middle click the blank tab space to bring up recently closed tabs.
- P373Y, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1no
- DeathfireD, on 04/12/2008, -0/+7or double click the tab to close it. You can also double click the outer bar that holds the tabs to open a new tab bar.
- fxu1989, on 04/12/2008, -2/+12What I do to open a new tab.
I click on the "Homepage" button with the mouse-wheel.
My Homepage is google, so it doesn't take more than 1 second of loading :P ..
To open windows on tabs, click the link with the mouse-wheel; to close the tab, click the tab with the mouse-wheel.- nemodomi, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Dugg down for mousing around instead of banging out key combos.
Open new tab: CTRL-T, *DONE*. Sheesh. You a Slowsky?
- nemodomi, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Dugg down for mousing around instead of banging out key combos.
- Lunarbunny, on 04/12/2008, -1/+7I learned of the middle click long ago. But right click menu? You should at least have been using ctrl+click.
- Soave, on 04/12/2008, -0/+5Ctrl+click's annoying if you're mouse-browsing. But yeah, middle click ftw.
- Ataxia2008, on 04/12/2008, -2/+3Mice suck. I try and use the mouse as little as possible.
- brettmurf, on 04/12/2008, -1/+2That is only what you do if you are used to an inferior Apple mouse(honestly why the ***** do they still have one button?). Why would you use two hands for a one hand task, you should already have your middle finger on the right-click at all times anyways.
- hushtown, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2apple's mighty mice have left, right, and scroll click...just like all the others.
no to mention horizontal scrolling and the "squeeze" click for even more options.- Verdanic, on 04/12/2008, -0/+4True, but they're also the least ergonomic devices ever released by anybody.
- Soave, on 04/12/2008, -0/+3Even if they have two buttons, why is the default setting one button?
- hushtown, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2apple's mighty mice have left, right, and scroll click...just like all the others.
- Soave, on 04/12/2008, -0/+5Ctrl+click's annoying if you're mouse-browsing. But yeah, middle click ftw.
- Pake, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Same. I always used the right click menu. Man, middle mouse tabs will make browsing so much better.
- mmortal03, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Yep, you can middle click on pretty much everything that makes sense. Back, Forward, Home, Bookmarks, Bookmarks Folders, Tabs (to close them).
Plus, on the Right Click context menu, you can middle click on View Image or View Background Image to open those in new tabs.
- mmortal03, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Yep, you can middle click on pretty much everything that makes sense. Back, Forward, Home, Bookmarks, Bookmarks Folders, Tabs (to close them).
- KINGGS, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1What? I usually just drag an drop.
- McHaleR, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1pwned, ive known about these for a while now, i only learned like one or two more shortcuts. Pretty good article if you didnt know them though
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 04/12/2008, -0/+20You can also middle-mouse click an existing tab, and the tab will close.
- dynacrylic, on 04/12/2008, -1/+90I'm not sure if "Incredible" was the most appropriate adjective to describe title the article... Incredible goes with "Incredible Hulk" rather well but not "Incredible Firefox Keyboard Shortcuts You May Not Know About".
- Schrodinger2, on 04/12/2008, -0/+23No dude this article is INCREDIBLE. The keyboard shortcuts are AMAZING. I dont know how I lived without them. My dull surfing days are over thanks to this AWESOME article. BANANAS
- jcaino, on 04/12/2008, -1/+11BACON.
- Ataxia2008, on 04/12/2008, -1/+1MIDGET
- webcrumb, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1CHUNKY BACON!
- jcaino, on 04/12/2008, -1/+11BACON.
- WallnutBoy, on 04/12/2008, -0/+3Come on, it isn't so bad.. Remember when Digg used to have AMAZING: in the title of everything? Thank God that died...
- bowe, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1The statements made in this article are in fact credible. I have tested them
- Schrodinger2, on 04/12/2008, -0/+23No dude this article is INCREDIBLE. The keyboard shortcuts are AMAZING. I dont know how I lived without them. My dull surfing days are over thanks to this AWESOME article. BANANAS
- IvanB, on 04/12/2008, -1/+382: Alt + D
F6 does the job as well. :)- bitterscream, on 04/12/2008, -0/+9Didn't know either, however I think the Alt+D combination would work better for myself as my hand is usually around that position. Not used to fetching F? keys.
- TheCoreh, on 04/12/2008, -1/+3Alt+D does nothing here...
- xenoc1de, on 04/12/2008, -1/+4Do you have firefox? Works for me.
- psevium, on 04/12/2008, -0/+38and Ctrl + L
- calenlas, on 04/12/2008, -0/+16Indeed, Ctrl+L seems to be the standard across all the browsers. Also, it makes a lot more sense when teamed with Ctrl+K to jump to the search field.
- madeingermany, on 04/12/2008, -0/+6And I can remember L as in Link ;)
- changyang1230, on 04/12/2008, -0/+7L for location.
- Ataxia2008, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1I have Ctrl+ L and my hotkey for my Library in Winamp, so this helps me out anyway :)
- teh_spazz, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Except Apple seems to think that makes no sense for safari. Apple Shift T or some ***** for the search field.
Long live Apple-L and Apple-K! - bowe, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1well in IE7 Ctrl+L opens a popup "Open Location Box". In firefox alt-d and ctrl+l do the same thing, unless you have the address bar hidden, in which case you get the popup. If you're using windows explorer, alt+d is the shortcut to get to the location bar there too. So I like to use alt-d instead of ctrl l.
- nroose, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1I have the latest Firefox 2, and Ctrl+L does not do anything for me.
- calenlas, on 04/12/2008, -0/+16Indeed, Ctrl+L seems to be the standard across all the browsers. Also, it makes a lot more sense when teamed with Ctrl+K to jump to the search field.
- Soave, on 04/12/2008, -0/+23Also, Control-K goes to the search field next to the address bar.
- Mantic77, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2As does Ctrl + E.
- MixMastaKooz, on 04/12/2008, -1/+2I think I'm just going to spend the next twenty minutes hitting ctrl+everykey to see what it does!
- nroose, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1Alt-D and Alt-d both are funny characters that start the search for me. Mac/Firefox, both latest production versions.
- denacem, on 04/13/2008, -0/+1I use F6 all the time. But if you're in a framed site, it switches through the frames first. Also Alt+D doesn't work in German Firefox, it's similar to the English Alt+F which opens the File menu.
- Okari, on 04/12/2008, -2/+5I'm not sure if it's just me, but undoing a closed tab doesn't work in FF3 B4 or 5. A pain in the ass when Tab Mix Plus still isn't compatible.
- TheCoreh, on 04/12/2008, -1/+13Here it works normally.
- kholburn, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2There is a development version of tab mix plus that works fine in 3.0b4 and 3.0b5. Although I have found 3.0b4 more stable and faster.
- Jereso, on 04/12/2008, -3/+208People didn't know about middle-click?!
- picpak, on 04/12/2008, -0/+62Way for it to not mention middle-clicking a tab to close it.
- TheCoreh, on 04/12/2008, -0/+7Actually, I pointed out middle clicking to a friend on college earlier today. She kept right clicking links and going to "New tab".
- 1ofMany, on 04/12/2008, -1/+113Hell, I don't think I could use Digg if I couldn't middle click all the articles.
- sei0n, on 04/12/2008, -0/+4Exactly! How can anyone survive?!
- scojerroc, on 04/12/2008, -5/+1middle clicking only brings up the scrolling cursor for me.
- evilray, on 04/12/2008, -0/+6middle click on a link, If that still doesn't work you could always resort to control click. I use that on my laptop all the time
- Astroseksy, on 04/12/2008, -1/+8You should probably stop using IE 6 then.
- scojerroc, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1if i were using ie6, i'd not likely have read the article, dude.

- HaloZero, on 04/12/2008, -6/+36I personally prefer Ctrl+L, rather than Alt+D. I already knew most of these shortcuts, unfortunately very uninformative.
- jspania, on 04/12/2008, -0/+4F6 works for me.
- crashingechelon, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1I was gonna say, I've been using ctrl+L for the longest time in firefox to highlight the address bar. I can say though I've never heard of Alt+D and it sounds like it does the exact same thing.
- bowe, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2alt-d is better if you're using windows, because getting to the location bar in windows explorer(vista not sure about xp) uses the same shortcut. Also CTRL+E for search gets you the search field in both explorer and firefox.

- zujik, on 04/12/2008, -0/+5Or Ctrl + E, does the same too.
- brettmurf, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2I've been using ctrl+K and ctrl+L for so long now that I get upset when other browsers don't have ctrl+k in them =(.
- thatcrazycommie, on 04/12/2008, -1/+7Another thing I learned recently is that you don't have to type anything even remotely resembling an actual URL into the address bar to get where you're going. For example you can enter "rotten tomatoes aqua teen" and it takes you straight to the Rotten Tomatoes page for the Aqua Teen movie.
- SharkyTech, on 04/12/2008, -2/+1Holy *****, that actually works.
- Soave, on 04/12/2008, -0/+13Does the URL bar use Google's "I'm feeling lucky" for things like that?
- Pake, on 04/12/2008, -1/+4I don't think it does, because other times it'll do a Google search. It's nice to have sometimes, but I've found it to be a read pain most times when I wanted a Google search instead.
- Soave, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Side not: you can make a shortcut to "http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%s&btnI=I%27m ..." as a way to quickly use Google's I'm Feeling Lucky feature every time. Just make the keyword something like "g," then type "g awesome firefox features" to automatically go to the first Google result.
This is also useful if you add modifiers like "site:wikipedia.org," because Google does a better job searching Wikipedia than Wikipedia does.

- psevium, on 04/12/2008, -0/+4I do that, but usually its "wiki subject" or "imdb moviename" etc.
- brettmurf, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Why not just use the search engines on the right hand side? They have both a wikipedia one and an IMDB one, both of which are routinely used in my browsing.
- Timmmm, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Because you have to select the search engine. Much quicker just to type: ctrl-L wiki bacon
This uses google to search for it. If the page you want isn't obvious from what you type then you get the search results for that phrase instead. I still prefer konqueror's method though (less typing). - psevium, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Also, usually if I want to search something I'll open a new tab and the cursor thing will already be in the location box

- crashingechelon, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1I noticed that too. I've been doing something similar to that on my mac in safari for a while. If i just wanted to go to say like google or facebook, I just type in google and hit enter and safari automatically added the www. and .com to google. I just decided to see if firefox did that and it did the same thing.
- yournightmare, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Must be the DNS server you use. I use OpenDNS and it doesn't work.
- bowe, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1okay guys, I'm going to let you in on a secret that will make your address bar 10x as useful as it is right now. www.yubnub.org You can install a firefox extension if you want but the easiest thing to do is just edit your firefox configuration file. So type about:config into the address bar. Search for keyword.url and edit the value, the default behavior is to just google. Edit the value to say "http://yubnub.org/parser/parse?command=" (no quotes of course.) Now you will be able to use 1000s of shortcuts right from the address bar. Here's some I like. g for google, y for yahoo, rotten for rottentomatoes, imdb, ifl for i'm feeling lucky, nwd for ninjawords dictionary, yt for youtube, az for amazon, wp for wikipedia, digg for digg. Using ls will give you a list of commands that match your search term. You can read command manuals by typing man and then the command name, you can even add commands by typing create.
- reventlov, on 04/12/2008, -0/+4After the rash of stupid stuff on digg, it's good to see something useful. I know I will be deleting a few things out of my history...
In addition to middle-clicking opening a link in a new tab, so will ctrl+click. Shift+click will open the link in a new window. This is useful when you're using a laptop and there is no middle button to be found.- TangTKE402, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1With a laptop you can "Middle Click" by clicking both left and right buttons at the same time. Unless you're a mac user and don't have a right button.
- webcrumb, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1If you're using a decent OS you can also use multi-tap, i.e. two finger tap for middle, three for right-click.
- bowe, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1and if you want get your whole fist in there and just pound on the mousepad.

- V01dV01cg, on 04/12/2008, -2/+25A keyboard shortcut can be "incredible" ?
- diegogarcia12, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1It can on Digg. Just as a planet that bears a slight resemblance to the Firefox logo can make the front page. I love Digg, really.
- krazikamikaze, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2When I scan digg, I'll open a bunch of tabs of things that look interesting (with middle-click of course), then scroll through the tabs with Ctrl+PgUp and Ctrl+PgDn, closing each when I'm done with it with Ctrl+F4.
- Greyh0und, on 04/12/2008, -0/+0or close a tab with ctrl + w :)
- MOates, on 04/12/2008, -0/+8I have to say I love the middle mouse button. Saves me a lot of time on digg opening articles in new tabs.
- PatrickBrown, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1I use to use the middle mouse button --- but it is difficult to deal with (on some mice hard / unreliable / annoying and on other mice it is missing).
There is a shortcut missing from the list --- pressing both mouse buttons (left + right click) at the same time on a link ALSO opens the link in a new tab. This seems easier than having to press the middle mouse button (at least for many mice - including those without a middle button).

- acero47, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1Also, if you just want to search in link names, use the single quote ( ' ). It can be useful at times especially if you don't want to use the mouse.

- madeingermany, on 04/12/2008, -0/+3https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/28 might do that
- joshualamgroup, on 04/12/2008, -1/+1you can always press ctrl+n, but that's a duplicate window, not tab
- farboo, on 04/12/2008, -0/+3Not a keyboard shortcut but you can ctrl-drag with the mouse.
- intelmole, on 04/12/2008, -1/+1how about a bookmarklet?

- sark666, on 04/12/2008, -1/+2For the second one, I use ctrl-L instead of alt-d. It takes both hands but that makes it a little less awkward. Depends where you left alt is situated I guess.
- Archaic1, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1Wait, people keep their left alt anywhere other than next to the space bar?
- bowe, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2whatchu talking about, there are two ctrl and alt buttons on my keyboard. The correct way to do it is to actually use opposing hands.
- neko, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2That's odd. I've been using ALT+number to go to different tabs.
Works in things like gnome-terminal too. - DavidStoner, on 04/12/2008, -0/+0I had to return a mouse that didn't take well to being middle-clicked. Not only does it open links in a new tab, but if you middle-click on a tab it closes it. This was more useful before tabs had the X's, but I still find myself doing it out of habit.
