- kman2k1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44Call Adobe's technical support.
- SoCalDissident, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33I thought the original looked better. I mean, as good as a photo of a hydrant can look.
Two easy tips: use a decent camera (something with decent optics, not a necessarily zillion megapixels) and use a polarized filter for some nice looking outdoor shots. - Kev1000000, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24The only difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little bit of extra!
- fjvwing, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22How to turn an ordinary photo look like something that looks contrived, staged, artificial, and over-thought.

- jacenat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9somehow i like the original more than the edited one ...
- jonpotz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"Diggnation - Destroying one server at a time..."
Should be the slogan... - iluvhatemail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7you want to fix your photos?
take RAW photographs (if your camera allows)
adjust as necessary in Adobe Lightroom. Free beta testing now at http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/lightroom/
It used to take me at least 20 minutes per photo to fix in photoshop the way i like it. Lightroom has cut that time dramatically. I'm sure aperture is just as good but I'm on a PC. - ersnyder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8It looks like *****. Anyone can throw a bunch of random filters on an image in photoshop and that's exactly what this guy did. Made it look like ass even more.
- david76, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9The final photo, frankly, sucked. It's like when you first develop your own prints in a darkroom and say "Oh, but I think it looks good grainy." Then when you get into a real studio, with good lighting shooting 25 speed film, you realize grain looks like crap.
Anyway, the same applies to the techniques this guy used. - painting, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6How to Turn an Ordinary Photo Into an Extraordinary Photo
more like how to turn a regular photo into a blurry one with different colors. - Blabster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Mirror for you guys :

Google Chache Works (god damned slowly).

Me too. I used to use it on Silicon Graphics workstations running IRIX back in the mid-90s, so they've had a version of it for a unix-like OS for a long time. It can't be that hard to get it running on linux. - sparc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sometimes just taking another picture can turn an ordinary picture into an extrodinary picture.... and sometimes a little luck helps too.
- neggbird, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9That's the ugliest photoshop end result I have ever seen. It's worse than lens flare and dry brush.

True, but I see where he was going with it.
and NorCal is better. :p - antigone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Because it's dooce's husband.
I think the photo looks cool. It's not like he does this to EVERY one of his photos. The point of the blog post was to do a tutorial about how he got the photo to look that way because people had asked. I think he accomplished what he set out to do. - crypticgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love how his attitude is basically, "I don't give a crap about photography, I'll just take some random crappy shots then apply a bunch of filters in photoshop." His "extraordinary" photo looks like someone barfed all over an underexposed shot accidentally taken from a disposable 110 camera.
Photoshop is awesome and all, but it can't make up for that fact that he knows nothing about photography, or at least doesn't care. I love how he spent "several hours" cloning out the grass when he could have spent 2 seconds pulling it out or reframing his shot. What an idiot. - crummer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3lame.
- jmcpherson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Article summary: First step, take uninspired photo. Second, apply filters generously until it looks like it came from a videogame from the late 90s. Voila! An "extraordinary" photo!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Here's what I did with it, basically just bringing out the colours:
http://www.ggcmedia.com/download/digg_blurb_pstonie.jpg - filmtex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is just like applying a ton of compression to a home-studio cd so its LOUD and then posting on digg- "How to turn an ordinary recording into and extraordinary one" Great photos begin with great photographers OR practice, practice, practice. Oh wait, thats how great photogographers get great- same thing with great musicians.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Saiing:
When did they stop shipping it for SGI machines? I'll bet the version they have for *nix is pretty out of date compared to CS2 or CS3. Interesting to think that they could potentially dust it off and try and bring it up to speed though.
[unrelated] Now that Apple uses x86 and x86_64 I wouldn't be surprised if Adobe just dropped support for any other architecture in the next 5-10 years. - fearofcorners, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, this program absolutely kicks the butt of Canon Digital Photo Pro.
- saahmed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I dont like that end pic at all. It looks like CG.
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the original site still loads (for me at least), just terribly slowly.
It's basically a picture of a fire hydrant with altered colors and blurs - GLSmyth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It looks like everyone else's enhancements make for yet another boring picture. The guy here isn't trying to replicate what he's already got, but he's using what he's got to make something interesting. Whether you like the result or not isn't really the point, how to create an image that attracts your interest from humble beginnings is the point.
- monkeyness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can see it, just takes a few minutes to load.
- voyetra8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Idea: instead of polishing a turd of a picture with ham-fisted and brutally obvious retouching, why don't you just learn how to take a good photograph?
- jackminardi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Maybe, and I am just speculating here, people are using digg as a bookmarking site to check back on this later! I know, I know crazy idea. But hey, you should just tell them to stop seeing as digg is obviously YOUR site.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I can't load the site, but I assume adding loads of lens flare, ramping up the saturation, and adding specular glint is what makes an extraordinary photo.
- hummer13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3On top of all that was stated above, am I the only that thinks the second one looks like a screenshot of a videogame? Maybe one including zombies?
- haydesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"How to Turn an Ordinary Photo Into an Extraordinary Photo"
Funny, I always thought it would be by posting a page to Digg with any picture, and then calling it "The BEST photo EVER taken (seriously!)!!" - aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow, i thought it was a screenshot of a hl2 when i first saw the picture. pretty neat.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1exactly
- UncleCrapper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I am sure we all want extraordinary photos, but do you really want Bea Arthur in every photo? Sometimes "great' is good enough.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sweet see you on deviantart posers.........
- LudicrousSpeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I saw his finished work, it looked like something out of HL2. Cool technique.
- Andross01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't call the end result getting an extraordinary photograph...to me, an outstanding image is remarkable because of its content and technical details. It is meant for sublime photography, but a sublime photo shouldn't take this much work in Photoshop.
Usually great images come from being at the right place at the right time and knowing the right way to shoot it. Ansel Adams and Moon Rise over Hernandez, New Mexico comes to mind. Ansel Adams is in his own league of course, but it works as an easy example in this case.
I find curves layers, color balance layers, and masks are fine enough for me in the end. Most of my work is already done in camera and using Lightroom/Adobe Camera RAW anywho. I never was one for all those filters anyway. - slothlovechunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is just a crappy, highly-stylized tone-mapping operator, the style of which seems popular these days.
I don't like it. I've seen too many... - Andross01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think anyone said they like flat, unsaturated, "boring" photos (I certainly don't), just that they don't like this particular post-process.
And just because it was brought up and I have nothing better to do: http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r86/Andross001/hydrant.jpg
Took a minute, at the most. - twistedpearls, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Snort. Loved everybody's comments. It's clear that Blurb and Dooce think they're the greatest creative team since....ever. Out here in the real world where they can't control the comments, it's clear that most people share MY opinion. LOL!
- Dejital, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3The lesson here is simple... Even after several hours and thousands of mouse clicks, the beauty of nature cannot be overcome by artificial enhancement.
- kd5ftn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Worst resizing ever. I haven't seen that bad of aliasing in photos since the late 90's
- npowel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Wow. The biggest bunch of retards in the world all grouped into one comments section.
It's not supposed to look like a normal photo, idiots. He's made it a much more interesting photo which actually has.... depth :O
I can't help but laugh at some of the attempts shown after people's criticism. Seriously. My stomach hurts.

Hard to decide which of those is funniest, but hey, not everyone understands digital art. Clearly there are plenty of people who think everything has to look flat, boring and unsaturated, or on the other hand, like a child has painted it with 3 pots of primary-coloured paints.
PS:
"The lesson here is simple... Even after several hours and thousands of mouse clicks, the beauty of nature cannot be overcome by artificial enhancement."
Yes. I bought myself some fire-hydron-and-building seeds yesterday so I could see the beauty of nature. Sigh.
( Also, just run Photoshop on Wine. It takes about 5 minutes to do 8-) ) -
