- brux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This guy charges around 475 dollars to design a logo, along with stationary template, and business card template. Not a bad deal. He provides all the vector images, and everything he uses. He includes small, and large logos, along with logos to go on a contrasting background. I think he provides a good service, and I thought his article was very informative.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Article synopsis: Make your logo simpler.
Thanks for the advice, big shot graphic designer. My new logo is a flat circle. Now people will be advertising my company every time they use a circle. Schweet! - error00101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why even start designing in a program that isn't going to allow you to output your solution in a useable format? Starting in photoshop is just going to cause headaches later when you're ultimately required to have a vector based mark. Just doesn't make sense.

thats the exact reason you are not allowed to upload a bitmap when submitting a t-shirt to J!NX...they have a disclaimer - jaxun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ryebrye ... Zackly! "Mr. Client, your logo needs work. Read this and you'll know why you aren't going to want to proceed with that 3 color gradient with swoop and globe and spinning star you thought looked cool."
+Diggeridooooo - meyerj88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Stop dabbling and please let professionals do it."
How do you become a professional if you don't "dabble" in it a little? If people don't, how will they know if they like it?
Good article with basics. Doesn't confuse you with a ***** of jargon that average people don't know. - ArcaneDevice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1use the old repro method. Photocopy or fax your logo and then copy each copy 5 or 6 times. if you can still make it out clearly at the end it has potential.
- waxdart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, I was convinced this was going to be another "graphic designx0rz" article about how to make the latest lens flares, and it was actually sound advice. +1
- olegk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1With so many terrible logos out there, this article should be enforced. It's all true. The best logos are the ones without special effects.
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2As a graphic designer, I find it funny how often graphic design articles make it to the front page of Digg.
This is stuff that any logo designer should know. I digg it because it gives me a website I can point someone to and have someone else agree with me when I am trying to convince someone that their logo is ugly. - MrFisty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gene HACKman: "Uhhhh, don't use bevel, drop shadow, outer glow or lens flare...
No *****, really? Gee, thanks."
Spot on. Might as well advise people not to design logos using clip art or Word Art.
Here's a tip: being able to use Photoshop does not make you a designer. In fact, you shouldn't use any bitmap graphic software for logos ever. - billydisaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's interesting, but his theories don't mesh with his examples. 'First remove all bevels, drop shadows and and effects'. Now look at the apple logo progression. His rules are more about making his job easier than making good design.
- bamfsog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Worth a dig just for the 1970's public access version of the Microsoft logo. I love that logo.
The actual article is geared towards your average "blogger guy/gal" trying to stand out a little, not a graphics professional. Its meant to be a beginners guide, and works well at that.
http://www.monkeyattack.com/ - TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good read.
- Korvaras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice. So very very very true. Bookmarked this for just a note to my self.
- 404notfound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, at first it looked like a cheap attempt to get some page views by stating fairly obvious things, but there are a few not-so-apparent tips that really work. Effective use of the Apple and Microsoft logos to demonstrate.
- karch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i liked it. and it also helped consolidate my natural feelings into really solid points. dugg
- slickrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally. I see so many logos that incorporate images, bevels, drop shadows, lens flare, glows, etc. that I want to email them and tell them they got screwed. ABSOLUTELY never try to replicate the human form in a logo (unless it's for retro reasons) it will never work and looks stupid. I will definitely forward this link to anyone that I will be dealing with for a design. I sincerely appreciate that someone took the time to write an article about this. When you think of bad logos that don't reproduce correctly especially in a fax or photocopy, think the new UPS logo or BP gas. They are great but when you make them B&W they lose their appeal. Good logos, I'd say Nike, Target, Basin, Cingular (little man) and Adidas (old flower). Don't use Helvetica Neue for anything (way overused).
- fionna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good comments for someone just trying to design there own logo. Thanks for the pointers.
- Mushroonaut, on 07/11/2008, -0/+0Excellent article. Kept simple but effective.
- inthe80s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In fact, you shouldn't use any bitmap graphic software for logos ever.
I hate rules like that. Photoshop is fine for doing a quick mock up. It shouldn't be used for your final presentation ready copy, but it's fine if you're trying to just see how something is going to look. The tool isn't the problem, it's the tool using the tool that's usually the problem. - Sidedish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1As long as photoshop filters are easy to use, people will make ***** logos (read: ***** everything).
- MisterKen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"you'll know why you aren't going to want to proceed with that 3 color gradient with swoop and globe and spinning star you thought looked cool."
Sooooo true.
Just spoke with a potential client who said, and I quote, said "We want to use the spinny thing from this logo and could you make the type liquidy like this one? That would look so cool. OH! And my wedding colors are teal and purple so lets use those"
Uh...no.
Good read. Digg++ - gingerchris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0drraf - that's not why the Apple logo is with a bite. The apple logo has a bite as an homage to Alan Turing, the man who cracked the Enigma code machine for the Allies in WW2 among other things, and is regarded as a father of computer science. He was also a homosexual at a time when this was illegal and was persecuted for this, eventually resulting in him killing himself by taking a bite from an apple he had laced in cyanide. Or that's what I was told anyway...
Back on topic, very informative article - dmoffitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0less is more, nuf said :)
- drraf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Nice article, with a nice examples. Now I know why Apple logo is with a bite ;-)
- bobbywan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0:o someone has a poopy mouth.
- newbietheatre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is a good guide for people dabbling in Graphic Design. You can spot an amateur logo a mile away. Excellent article.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0wow MisterKen you must have REALLY REALLY cooler clients then me to get jobs like that!
***** idiot - vermin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hah, nice. One of my clients just asked me to redesign a logo.
- Zonkzor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1This isn't a goldmind of information, but has some really solid tips. The whole moral of the story is make your really simple. Look at all the major corporations and their logos are all really simple. This makes me want to redesign the logo for my own site.

How To Be A http://CollegeCheapskate.com
-----= - pixelwerx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I think it's functioning fine. 25 Diggs in a short period of time is enough to get you on the front page. It's all about momentum.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1all of you dont know what the ***** you are talking about...........ryebrye doesnt know anything either.
im way better - br0ken1128, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Pehaps it has something to do with the frequency of the digs.. maybe a story that gets 25 diggs in a minute will make the main page, whereas a story that gets 25 diggs in 2-3 hours .. won't?
- br0ken1128, on 10/12/2007, -4/+077 diggs now ..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0"This is a good guide for people dabbling in Graphic Design. "
Stop dabbling and please let professionals do it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Uhhhh, don't use bevel, drop shadow, outer glow or lens flare...
No *****, really? Gee, thanks. - geekThing, on 10/12/2007, -6/+125 diggs and its on the ***** main page!!!
