- lithite, on 10/12/2007, -3/+62I'm colorblind, and I can see it. ***** you, too.
- davdav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+59I was a little concerned until I realized the second two are not supposed to have a number anyway.
- delzuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+51Being Color-blind I'll take this one.and a few others:
An intro: I am very color blind ( I fail every dot type test out there)
1. Yes red tinted lenses can make up for the loss in red that we see. I've never met a colorblind person that was willing to do it because the "Rose Tinted Glasses" jokes would be too much to have to put up with.
2. As a kid I colored everything Black, I was told too many times that I was coloring things incorrectly for me to care any longer. Also Crayola may be the greatest thing out there for color blind kids. Red is labeled Red, so even if you cant really tell the difference easially you can get an idea. without a label I would always mix up blue and purple because he red in purple would just not stick out to me.
3. Red is still there for us, but we kind of have to concentrate to see it. Large amounts of red (stop signs) are easy to determine (perhaps because society has told us what a Stop sign should be, i don't know). Red Ink is a bother though. When writing papers I was unable to tell the difference between what I wrote and what the teacher wrote, there just wasn't enough red for me to tell the difference.
possibly because of ...
4. luminance The main way that I tell black from red is how bright it is. Red by it's nature is a pretty dark color and that's why it gets confused with black (to me). Here's where it gets fun. Red Lights (stoplights) are not bright enough to stick out for me (without concentrating) I tend not to notice them at night and consequently I have blown through quite a few unattended intersections in my time (Before we say I'm a hazard on the road let me announce that I've grown up this way and I've become VERY observant of traffic patterns, that's how I've come to gauge intersections and it's a nice warning for upcoming lights. But only if I'm undistracted. I don't drive with friends in the car because like stoplights, taillights don't stand out so it's bad if I'm not paying attention). Additionally Green lights stand out a bit too much at night, blending in with the lights on the sides of the road so I've come to a halt a few times at green lights trying to determine what's the deal with the lights in the middle of the road.
Here's how I roll.
When with Wife: she drives (or announces oncoming lights).
with friends: they drive.
when in a town or city where the lights are placed horizontally: I don't drive
When alone: I drive.
and I don't own a cell phone so I don't have to worry about those interruptions.
Any Questions? - spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+43Excellent article, I'm colorblind, and couldn't see any numbers!
BUT, this isn't how a colorblind person sees the world, this is how a colorblind person sees a colorblind test. - MarkCiccone, on 10/16/2007, -1/+38I'm color blind, and I don't see any of the numbers or images in those dots! The only time it's noticable, if any one is wondering, is if someone asks me for a color at work and I say it's purple, when it's really blue. It's really not a big deal, I just see colors differently.
- inactive, on 10/16/2007, -0/+28Really interesting.
There is a website out there where you can input your favorite JPEGS and it will convert them to let you see them as a color blind person does...Back when I had Windows, I messed with it a good bit.
Cubis 2 has a way you can play the game even if your color blind. - Vironex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29So this is why I dress like a retard.
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28I see an 8.... Am I broken?
- marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29I feel offended.
- jankyscoes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26There are different degrees of color blindness. Most color blind people are not bad enough that they cant tell the difference between red and green. I am red-green color blind but I can see red and green just fine. I DO have problems when detecting subtle changes in the shades of red and green, which is why I cant see the numbers in the eye tests. I didnt even know I was color blind until I was 13 and had to get contact lenses.
- neutrascrub, on 10/12/2007, -27/+52http://www.tshirthell.com/store/product.php?productid=559 can he see that?
- Darthmalt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Crass that's not what colorblind means. There is a theory that we all see different colors but that's a separate issue. Colorblind means that the person who is "colorblind" has trouble telling the difference between separate colors. i.e. blue and purple both look the same or red and orange look the same. Though I had a boss who was completely colorblind for him everything was in shades of grey. You could tell when he didn't get his wife to ok his clothes as he would have some interesting color choices.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorblind - anonydigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19"...and I JUST found out I'm colorblind. Took me 20 years. Thanks Digg!...not!"
wow that guy just found out he's colorblind and all the support you ppl would give him was 23 mods downs! He must have a really bad day. :) Don't worry Pajk. That's really 88 diggs up to normal ppl. ;) - overkil6, on 10/12/2007, -9/+28Here is something I've always wondered: How does a colour blind person know they are colour blind if they, early in their life, are taught the names of colours? For example, if i see red as red but Jimmy sees red as blue does Jimmy just just label everything he sees as blue red because he was taught by a colour seeing person the name of that colour even though he sees it wrong? Does that even make sense?? :)
- CeeJayDK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Damn right .. more sex for us colorblinds.
- MasterSplinter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14It's color DEFICIENT, not color BLIND. As long as you can actually differentiate one color from another and they aren't grey, it's a deficiency. It's a common misconception, but please, let's call it what it is.
- PAJK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14@anonydigg:
LOL thanks. Why people are digging me down, I have absolutely no idea. Perhaps they don't believe me?
I never thought there was a way of actually testing to see if I was color blind. When I clicked that link, and it told me what I should be seeing, my heart kind of stopped!
I always get colors wrong, and now I know why. I find it very difficult to distinguish between purple and blue, and of course greens and reds. But also orange and yellow sometimes...but I do only have the red/green color "blindness".
Anyway, like I told my girlfriend, I am not colorblind - everyone else is. - AboveBeyond, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15OMG, I just found out I'm colorblind (or deficient as the above post stated)!!
No wonder sometimes I have a hard time distinguishing colors and people laughing at me! - mp3dog, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20Too bad that guy writes about as bad as he sees!
That first section was just a cluster-***** of words. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Ive always wondered, what do blind people see?
Just blackness or what?
*confused* - Scynet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Not true.
- lastthingusee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11His name is L33tstuff, therefore every comment he makes must be l33t and superior to everyone else because that's what he is, superior.
- regedit2D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10after looking at the images that were supposed to show a number I realized I couldn't. So I just got back from the eye doctor and realized I also have the same problem he does.
- Hoov, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13What a horribly written article.
you see this! but actually what i see is this which is what you see! i can't see what you see because you're normal! see?! you see red, but i see blue so you say i see red which is actually blue (what i see) but you see normal colors because you see normal. - Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11No, that's to check to see if you're epileptic.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Kind of a misleading title, unless the "world" is nothing but color blind test circles and colored boxed with numbers in them. If it wasn't for the boxes part, this would have been the most unnecessay article ever. I think everyone knows that a color blind person doesn't seen the number in a color blind test cirlce. That is the whole point of the test!
- thomashallock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9No, we just have a hard time telling them apart. We can, however, run faster.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13what the ***** is your problem!?
anyone can be color blind - weirdbro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9well, I realized because blue and purple, brown and green, look almost exactly the same for me
- Backlash, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13***** u... u just bout' blew my speakers
- NikZ, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11This is why I can never get those damn green or yellow shots in Rockstar Table Tennis. I'm fine with the blue & red shots, but have an almost impossible time determining the green & yellow ones.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Hate to break it to you but being colour blind is not why you dress like a retard.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8If you look hard enough for it you can figure it out, but I dont think that's the point of the exercise.
- mcottier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Here's the URL to the JPEG image processor that will convert them to let you see them as a color blind person does.
http://colorfilter.wickline.org/ - gameguy43, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8i'm colorblind too. i remember being ridiculed for not being able to tell the difference between blue and purple in kindergarten. WE DO NOT SEE THINGS IN BLACK AND WHITE! the best way that i can put it is, colors just dont look as different from each-other for us as for most people. i can still appreciate the color choices in a piece of art and all that stuff, but unfortunately not quite as much as someone who sees colors fully. again, we do not see in black and white! of course, there are many kinds of colorblindness, some more severe than others. but again, it usually just comes down to having a harder time telling the difference between blue and purple / yellow and orage / yellow and green when youre similar shades.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I think they see blackness but I remember watching Primetime and they had blind HUMANS who could "see" with echolocation. Very interesting.
http://abcnews.go.com/Primetime/story?id=2283048&page=1 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"As long as you can actually differentiate one color from another and they aren't grey, it's a deficiency."
Whoa, I just had a thought. What if grey is a color, not the grey we see but a grey we cannot comprehend because all humans are color blind to it. It would explain why its grey :D - Takhasis2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7i disagree with neutrascrub, this is a really nice thing to know. see things from a different point of view. Thanks for sharing.
- KZeni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7There's actually 2 color blind simulation programs for OS X. Both are neat to play around with to get a feeling of what the color blind are seeing.
One is more complex/powerful - http://www.michelf.com/projects/sim-daltonism/
While the other is simple - http://colororacle.cartography.ch/ - alexwwade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The color blind simulation website is called vischeck (www.vischeck.com). They also do a version simulating baby vision (www.tinyeyes.com). And best of all, there's a function on the Vischeck website to correct images so that color blind people can see the detail they are missing (www.vischeck.com/daltonize/)
- kdubbz6688, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7noo!!! I am red-green colored blind! DAMN IT! on the test with a 5 or a 2 in the circle, I see a 2! and the test on the top of that http://www.toledo-bend.com/colorblind/Ishihara.html website, I can only see the 25 and 56! o well i guess I cant be a cop then?
- spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Oh and as for traffic lights, it's not hard, the top is red, the bottom is green. However blinking yellow/red, for some reason those are weird for me.
- Beelzebub, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9i took the tests that were linked to in the article and have just discovered that, i am color blind
edit:i should have refreshed, i didnt see AboveBeyond's comment - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7They don't know they are colorblind, its all we have ever seen and how we know the world. I personally went through kindergarten, thinking when we have to color things by the numbers everyone needs to read the Crayon to see if its Red or not, Eventually as the school year goes on and the crayons lose their wrappers its just a shot in the dark. Then the teacher decides your "acting out" because your coloring wrong on purpose, and you never had that problem before, when you don't understand that you see things differently at all.
I went through 5 years of this malicious "acting out" during coloring before anyone cared to have me tested for color deficiency. In conclusion, the public school system is a joke. That teachers aren't trained to look for and spot very common vision problems that probability dictates will manifest itself in their classrooms around 2-3 times year after year is ridiculous. - gengisPhat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Cool article and all but maybe the author could chill a little on the exclamation points. I hate having to read every sentence in an excited tone.
- patterson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Nevermind, I used Vischeck http://vischeck.com
It says "***** The Color Blind" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I guess im really colorblind because I cant read that at all...whats it say?
- ncraig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i can not see the 5, i only see the 2, but i can read all the other numbers, weird.
- Nodren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6he's just trolling, mod him down.
