This is a throw back to the original Parnelli Jones 1970 BOSS Mustang - thats why its orange, has louvers, hood pins, shaker hood etc
take a look here for a little history and pics of the original Parnelli Jones Mustang
http://www.historictransam.com/OriginalDrivers/ParnelliJones.htm
Its a very nice retro mustang but not exactly "Hottest Mustang Ever"
I would take a regular Saleen Mustang with the glass roof option
http://www.mustangforums.com/m_956530/tm.htm
or the Saleen Extreme heritage edition
http://www.mustangblog.com/index.php/2006/ebay-2007-saleen-extreme-heritage-edition/ - Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23Lemme guess: you're a fan of those pimped out Honda Civics, right?
- Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19actual hottest mustang:
http://hotrodders.com/gallery/data/500/medium/66_mustang_on_fire.jpg - wrenchone, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Man, you people sometimes.
Cars are not simply about being the ultra fastest ever around a track. If they were, we'd all be driving Lotus cars. (Not that that's a bad thing...) Cars are about style, passion, and spirit. Just look at this Mustang for a minute. It's beautiful. The normal Mustang is a damn gool looking car to begin with, but this just adds that final polish. All the details hearken back to the original 1970s Parnelli Jones Boss 302, but the car still looks modern.
It's got power. It doesn't have 800hp, but 400 is nothing to sneeze at. It has handling. It won't out-turn that Lotus, but it's been improved and tweaked. It's got style. My god does it have style. Put all that together, and you have a damn good car. Not some super ultimate car, but a damn fine car full of style.
They're only making 500 of these. With these looks, the performance tweaks by Saleen, the history, and the limited number, I could justify 60,000 easily.
Where are my keys? - fucter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13wtf, no pics of the engine?
- Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@dustyb
I think you might be thinking of those imports with the giant wing on the back and a big muffler. - dcbebop, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9When will Ford ever get serious about their interiors? For 61k I would expect a little more effort put into this thing.
Beautiful car from the outside. True to the original (love the vents on the back window). - PointAndClick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@noreturn
So obviously it must be a POS since it was built to do one thing and not another...
I fail to see the point of comments like this. The reason the Mustang is so successful is that it maintains a good balance at a good price point that the average Joe can afford. With the huge aftermarket, one CAN, make it into anything they want. Or they can just go out and buy a BMW because surely they must be headed to the road course.
The Camaro/ T/A was flat out more powerful than the Mustang, but guess who made it through. No matter what you think of Ford, you have to admit they know what their doing with the Mustang.
And for what it's worth, the '05+ Mustangs are actually competent handlers, for those damn American cars at least. ;) - Hoov, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Ok, so swap out the suspension with something better. What the ***** is your point?
If I want to throw myself (and my car) into a turn I'll buy a BMW. If I want to drag race down a quarter mile stretch I'll buy a muscle car.
Throw enough money at either one, and they'll fly to the moon and back. - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It only shares the displacement of the original pushrod Windsor block that spawned the first 302. It's a modern DOHC V8 from Ford's modular V8/V10 family.
Not that GM can't put out some serious power with their older pushrod designs, but the DOHC V8 from Ford has some serious design advantages, like variable valve timing, that no amount of tuning can compensate for on a cam-in-block pushrod engine with 2 valves per cylinder. The design is just woefully inefficient compared to any modern OHC engine. - tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8That's going to be a classic someday.
- CrazyForSW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Price wasn't in the description. The websites says it's for $60,000.
- Chaos12, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Saleen =/= Ford
- spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Over $60K and I bet it has a live rear axle.
- linuxpenguin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8you're missing the fact that it's the "HOTTEST MUSTANG EVER!"
seriously, though. . . can we please stop it with the misleading titles? This is (IMO) NOT the hottest Mustang ever. I'm not particularly fond of orange, maybe if it was black or red I would like it better. - Boofster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Too many "special" models lately. It's diluting the brand.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5They need something other then the "Boss" orange, give it a something that makes it look a little shaper, and meaner.
- wrenchone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Um, back in the 60s and 70s when Mustangs went through their first round of popularity, there were just as many special edition Mustangs as today.
- trry96, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6The shelby gt500 will always be #1 in my book
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+15it just looks like the regular modern mustang, but orange
am i missing something here? - Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Amen.
- 13B1303, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Hey noreturn did ya take a peek at arizas first link???
http://www.historictransam.com/OriginalDrivers/ParnelliJones.htm
That would be a Mustang gettin twisty at Laguna Seca, a real road coarse.
The old ones are still at it too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCD5GDKyqPo - Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Those are just a bunch of body kits. Not entirely the same as the Mustang we're talking about here.
- 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6funny your pants now look the same color as the car !
- Zatko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Maybe its because I grew up as a kid in the 80's, but I really like rear window louvers. I always thought they were cool. Now put some gull-wing doors, like a DeLorean and I am sold!
- PointAndClick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you took time to read the article...
"a beefed up suspension that would emulate the performance of the 1970 championship-winning Boss 302 that Parnelli Jones helped make famous back in the golden era of Trans-Am racing."
1) Not all cars are made for the same purpose. (read: road courses)
2) This particular one IS made to handle well. It's a throwback to the original Boss 302 which dominated the Trans-Am (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans-Am_Series) series in '69-70. - Barman, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12I think I just soiled my pants.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yup, it's a live rear axle, just like all the others.
- Karmalary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I used to own a '70 boss 302, but not the Parnelli Jones version. It was still one hot ride. This was right about the time the 55 MPH speed limit kicked in, not that that ever concerned me.
- fix8ed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A little anger management problem there buddy? It's just a car...
- orlyfactor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ugliest color for a car...ever.
- duhblow7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5My grandfather was friends with Parnelli Jones, AJ Foyt and the mechanic for Jim Hurtubise when they decided to leave Buffalo and come to California, where they could race all year long. It was either Parnelli Jones wife or AJ Foyt's wife that my grandmother was friends with. My grandmother and grandfather met at a bowling alley in Long Beach with Parnelli, AJ and Jim.
There's also a little blurb about Parnelli and this Mustang on page 125 of the USA Motor Trend March 2007. - justinlarsen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6the problem with mustangs is i can buy a $16,000 version of this and 95% of the population wouldnt know the difference.
- PointAndClick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not to be picky, but it's actually a SOHC. We know what you meant though.
n0ydz- Not sure what your point is.
Yes, the 221 was the first in the Windsor family. Followed by the 260. Then the 289, 302, and 351w. The 302 (like the Chevy 350) is actually an amazing engine. Nearly 40 years after it's introduction it's still what many people rely on to get the job done cheaply and reliably. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually the Saleen's are built from the V6 version. If you gave the insurance company the VIN number, it would appear as a stock V6 mustang. Of course the car has been completely overhauled, just like the cars Callaway and Lingenfelter puts out. I believe Roush also uses a V6 Mustang for it's "donor" car.
- Number23, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5A 60K Mustang? Corvette Z06 please.
- cp101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No, they're not, they're not even a quarter as good. Good car designs are few and far between these days. And this car is no exception. It's a diss to the name of Parnelli Jones.
- Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5....you're kidding, right?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I like it.
- mustangman1080, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1quit bitching about a car you'll never be able to afford any way. by the way, what do you drive? probably a civic or neon just like every other 16 year old that thinks they have the hottest car ever.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3While I do agree with most of that, the rims are alloy.
- ohcoaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree, the rims suck. Alloy rims are an eye sore with that paint job. Try black rims FTW
- Desolate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Too bad the guy who belongs to it looks like a total chode.
- trev0006, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1With all the variations in the new mustang I would have to say the Saleen Parnelli Jones Limited Edition Mustang and the Ford Shelby GT500KR look the best http://www.dpccars.com/photos/04-05-07page-Ford-Sh ...
car reviews
http://www.dpccars.com/ - jcaino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2not bad looking..
but if i was going to spend the money i'd get a z06 - numlok, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Hottest Mustang "on sale"... sure.
"Ever"? Nope: http://www.automotoportal.com/article/ford-mustang-giugiaro-concept-revealed - wrestlingnrj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Love the car, but I would personally do the Hot Wheels Widebody conversion on a GT500 Mustang.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Screw autoblogspam, link to the real thing next time, http://www.saleen.com/saleen-parnellijones.htm .
- khyberkitsune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nah, here's how you rice something out on the uber cheap, cheaper than those car modifiers!
http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/pcmods/cases/7d9c/ - mustangman1080, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1so what, every manufacturer has their problems. i suppose your gm is perfect?
