The reason is that all the designers of clothes, furniture, decorations, cars, etc, want to make things that either complement or are this color. It keeps everyone on the same page...or palette if you will. You remember how the last two-three years there has been a lot of burnt orange? Pantone created/facilitated that. They'll even bring old colors back so that vintage stuff/antiques can be used again. I never followed colors, and I really don't now, but if I hear what Pantone does, I listen (so go out and buy a blue iris colored piece of clothing, you'll be "cool")
