- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It always baffled me how it is so difficult for Hollywood to take a work already written, and reduce it to a couple hundred pages of dialog without adding gratuitous sex, violence, and whatever corny tropes are current. Give me two days and I could write a better non-original script than all of Hollywood's paid drones.
- swrostmore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6this is a contest on from a computer graphics forum, to make a fake trailer for a movie based on EON. In other words, nothing to do with a film actually being made. The top entries are pretty damn impressive tho.
- robotbling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6probably not, thats why its labeled as "concepts".... could inspire someone to try though
- noisey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'd love to see a movie based on EON. It's one of my favorite books. I think it would tend well to a movie.
- WildBil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow A Hard Core Science Fiction Movie!
- ConceptJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@DAGONthehauge
"I, Robot" was fiction for grown-ups too, but the movie was a cartoon. Granted, I liked the movie, but as a fun mystery/action movie where Will Smith cracked wise and the stunningly beautiful Bridget Moynihan was out-acted by a special effect, not as an adaptation of anything by Asimov.
"Eon" is perhaps mny favorite "hard science" SF book ever, but I'm not holding my breath for the movie to capture its intellectual wonder. If there are pretty pictures, I'll go see it nonetheless, but I'm not very optimistic about the story.
Of course, "Contact" was quite true to the book and captured what it was really all about, so there's always hope. - Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Don't get your hopes up guys, I doubt theres even a screenplay. Loved the book though.
- astroperson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6oooooooooooooooooh!
- Visceral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh *****, if only it were true!! The trailer actually looked damm fine. They got the look of the "potato" wrong, but other than that, I want it!!
- scooterbaga, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I love this series. I hope to god someone picks up on this and actually makes a movie. And the sequel of course.
- str3ama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41st one looked amazing..it looked real, not only real as in life like..but real as in high quality hollywood production!
2nd one was pretty good, they must have had a real person sub in for the girl..
3rd one wasn't very good..it was good in terms of art, but in comparison to the 1st, it was pretty bad. - doggo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Jeez that first prize trailer is amazing! If only Hollywood had some balls...
- memetomancer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3urusai - you've got _three_ days... pick any book you like. heck, take three years.
unless you've completely mastered cinematic storytelling, are fully cognizant of the realities of film production and competently prepared to convince the person with the checkbook that the film will appeal to as wide an audience as possible... you won't produce anything other than the most trite fanfic, e.g., the sort of script hollywood is (figuratively) drowning in.
seriously, there must be at least 100,000 scripts in circulation around here at any given time. that's not an exaggeration. they seem to be more common than demo tapes of mediocre rap artists. - zouden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's a book written in 1985 (which is why there are Russians in these trailers). There's also a sequel (Eternity) and a prequel (Legacy).
If you haven't read it, you're missing out. Eon is a true masterpiece. - burrhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Forge of God, Anvil of Stars and the unpublished third book in the series have all been optioned by Warner Brothers but as of 2006 Greg Bear mentioned on his website that nothing has moved forward.
- zouden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Here you go.
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/16/12458/12458_1170252617_attach.flv (17.9mb) - volve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I loved the series, but honestly, he really phoned-in on Legacy don't you think? Quite disappointing. :(
Back to the matter in hand; FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, SOMEONE MAKE EON INTO A MOVIE! - Visceral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's based on this sci-fi book by Greg Bear.
http://www.amazon.com/Eon-Greg-Bear/dp/0812520475/ref=pd_bbs_2/103-7059805-2130215?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1174628714&sr=8-2 - mr_mechanics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It does not go on forever, just until they reach the end of time.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can anyone say 'Hyperion'?
- Mudger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Link to video
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/eon/player.php?entry_id=77140 - nonchai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow ! read that many years ago - concepts a bit dated now but he was ahead of the "curve" at the time. A great SF author
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It goes on forever. There is a singularity at the end of the potato called the flaw.
- EatingPie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3These are absolutely beautiful, particularly 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes on page 3. I can only hope a movie gets made... and maintains this level aritistry.
-Pie - PVerdieck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd say it is also one of my favorite series also, but its so hard to choose.
Forge of God/Anvil of Stars
Brin's Uplift War Series
Benford's Galactic Center Series
Ian Banks Culture Series
McDevitt's Academy Series - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm apparantly the only one who's never heard of Greg Bear, or EON
- KevInTx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Eon series is my favorite Sci-Fi of all time... I just hope they don't make a mess of it like what usually happens when a great sci-fi book is converted to a movie.
- DooM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Forge of God is -fantastic-. I'm rereading it for the third time right now and I can't recommend it enough.
- Visceral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you want to read the books, here's the order:
Eon
Eternity
Legacy (It's the prequel, but, you should still read it last as that's how it was written and re-introduces you to certain characters from the first two)
In addition, there are two other short stories set directly in his "Way" universe and one other prequel short story, "The WInd From a Burning Woman" set in it as well. - lagrange, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What was in the 7th chamber again?
- flap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone got a link somewhere other than the site. It is down for maintenance.
- diggelyoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3OMG!!!!.. this is auesome !!!!!!!!!!!!
A movie based on EON !! ... excellent :) :)
I love Greg Bears books and EON is my favourite.
OK, this is a CGSociety competition but does anyone know if someone is planning to make a movie bassed on EON? - BeefBaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would be nice to be able to download the winning entrant, I'd like to show it to others without having to stream it off the site every time.
- digi2k6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i have a great idea.....
someone should set up a site like digg.com for movie scripts. the general public could skim through them and "promote "the best ones to the front page. this would pretty much cure the movie industries fascination with horrible scripts....
just a thought... - ReinMasamuri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@digi2k6
That would be a great idea, but movie industries don't care what you want. They care about what they think you want. - blutkind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2NOOOOO MAINTENENCE!!! :(
- Fratm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought the 'potato' in the first two trailers was all wrong, and in the third trailer it looked like what I expected.
Sure would be nice if they really made the movie.
-Fratm - dupswapdrop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Brin's Uplift War Series was the best. In the 80's I wrote a game based on the books. But only got it 75% done, then the computer company's os was killed by big billy g, and I didn't have the time to move it to a new platform.
- ConceptJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Unpublished third book?"
Unpublished but written? Wow, it boggles the mind. That's cool. - dkm201, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1edit
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Finally some fiction for grownups - as opposed to cowboys & indians rehashed crap for infants.
- geuisteses, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE THIS SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
