- sporg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1There have been at least two companies selling refurbished DeLoreans for many years now. Look it up. By the way the DeLorean happens to be a very troublesome vehicle especially when it comes to the electrical systems. Maybe they will fix the problems in the new models. I am curious to know if the doors will still be operated with those fancy jet canopy torsion bars or a new system?
- jjesusfreak01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The Delorean Motor Company has been constantly been producing DeLoreans for quite a while now. What they do is stock huge amounts of every original part for the DeLorean, and then they simply build one from scratch when a customer orders one. Sounds like they will be making a NEW DeLorean now.

- Ndiggnation, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Not true, from what I've read in the past. I guess "jigawatt" was a pronunciation that was common until somewhat recently.
"Throughout the series, "gigawatt" is pronounced "jigowatt". This pronunciation of "gigawatt" is technically correct, although it is more commonly pronounced with two hard "g" sounds as in "golf.""
- Ndiggnation, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Not true, from what I've read in the past. I guess "jigawatt" was a pronunciation that was common until somewhat recently.
- Spideristic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The correct spelling is indeed "gigawatt". And although the Bobs got the spelling wrong the first time, they still chose to keep that spelling in the scripts for BTTF1 and the sequels. Hence I still consider that it is spelt "jigowatt" and not "gigawatt"; atleast in the BTTF universe.
Below is a transcript from the BTTF DVD commentary, Bob Gale (Writer/Producer of BTTF trilogy) explains about jigowatt.
Bob Gale: I should talk about "jigowatts" for a second.
The proper pronunciation, of course, is "gigawatts" [with a hard "G" sound], and when Bob [Zemeckis] and I were doing research, we talked to somebody who mispronounced it "jigowatts". We were actually completely unfamiliar with the term, and we thought that was how it was supposed to be said. It does come from the Greek 'gigas' [that Greek root is pronounced with a "J" sound, not a "G" sound], for gigantic, so I suppose it's not beyond the realm of possibility. But never having heard of it, we actually spelled it in the script "jigowatt". A "jigowatt" is actually supposed to be a gigawatt, a million watts. So the mystery of the gigawatts is now solved. - JefffN, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Actually... No. Jigawatt is the technically correct pronunciation (as in gigantic) but not the commonly used pronunciation. Kinda like how GIF is technically pronounced jif, but no one pronounces it that way.

- RexMaxus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3SHUT UP!
- Deranged, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1The used one and the new one are two different vehicles entirely. The new one is hand made in America rather than in Ireland where the original was manufactured. The car is actually comparatively cheaper then the 80s models. A brand new DMC-12 in 1981 would run you $25,000--almost $70,000 after inflation.
Not to mention the fact that these cars are low-powered and not always reliable (at about 15 years old). These newer models are expected to take care of the problems that have been discovered over the past decade and a half. Autoblog notes that the engine will change, as well as the interior to be more modernized.
You might forget the purpose of buying a car. There are many, not just one. Some buy for performance, some for looks, some simply enough to get from point a to point b. The latter will not be interested in a new delorean. DMC knows that. However, if you're looking for the looks aspect, this unique design is a sure neck bender. And for the price, it ought to be pretty powerful.- bilbravo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The old cars are over 25 years old, not 15.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1i still think that you've got to be a huge tool to spend that much money on a piece of ***** like the "new" delorean. might as well get an authentic old model for far cheaper. like you said, the people interested in the car aren't the type looking for a practical means of getting from point A to point B. it's more of a collector's item. so it makes more sense to buy an old one, restore it, and it keep in the garage most of the time. spending an extra $45k for a new model is pointless and hardly worth the money. you might as well get an old one and spend the extra $45k on a new lexus or something.
- mydigga, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3They will produce 1 - 2 a month at a price of $57k. So revenues will be $57k - $114k per month. Why does this sound like a bad idea?

- Carsonauto, on 10/10/2007, -13/+44Inaccurate. They will be building REPLICAS at a rate of 1 or 2 a month.
- Deranged, on 10/10/2007, -1/+31The car will be made by DMC. The car will not have the same interior or engine, and every piece will be new. Not to mention they will be changing other parts for the sake of reliability and modernization. To me, that counts as a new model since a "REPLICA" implies that the car will be identical to the older models.
- rkiga, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4"Replica" doesn't imply being identical. Do most AC Cobra replicas come with the same engine as the original? Of course not.
Dictionary.com- jjesusfreak01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well, the DMC has been making exact replicas using original parts for a while now. I think they only offered one upgrade over the original design in the ones they sell (those old DeLoreans were not performance cars). Of course, they also had the option available to add a flux capacitor to your order.
- rkiga, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4"Replica" doesn't imply being identical. Do most AC Cobra replicas come with the same engine as the original? Of course not.
- massproductions, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12No, they're building DeLoreans from the ground up using whatever parts they can find. Also, since they're the new DMC, anything they call the DeLorean is official. They could be selling a swan-shaped paddleboat and we'd still have to call it the new DeLorean.

- davewashere, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5They're actually going to start making their own parts next year. That's part of the reason they made this decision to build new cars -- they need to justify remanufacturing parts for a car that hasn't been made in 25 years. They've nearly run out of the leftover Delorean parts, which they've been using to restore old DeLoreans for some time now.

- cyclox, on 10/10/2007, -2/+120I am glad they are aiming for 57,500, because if it was 58,000 it would be totally out of my price range.
- Nougat, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9Eh, they're not going to be real production cars, they're going to be hand assembled. Not sure how you can hand assemble one or two cars a month, sell them for $57,500 each, and stay in business. They should sell them for more; I can guarantee that people will be buying these and reselling them for huge profits.
- Deranged, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Check out Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Aston Martin, Dodge (only the viper is hand made), Chevrolet (Corvette), and basically any other exotic car maker... It's all about being exclusive.
- Nougat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4All of those cars are super expensive except the Corvette. (Corvettes are hand-assembled? I didn't know that.) And the Corvette has all of GM behind it. DMC has nothing.
- Deranged, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Don't confuse the terms "production" and "mass production". Machines aren't necessary in creating large things, they just make it go by a lot faster.

- codyman, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6I hope they put better engines in them... because those original engines which were supposed to be fairly quick were actually slower than advertised due to emission control systems...
I guess you could just travel back to the mid 1960's and pick up a new 350 block fairly cheap though...- fuckinhell, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You could do that now too. Prolly even cheaper than you could in the 60's
- jj00, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You would be correct sir - the engines are supposed to be pretty powerful, but they limited their output for emission reasons. From what I've heard, it was the thing to do in the early 80's (close to the oil embargo).
I'm more interested in if they are going to add some improvements. The one I got to ride in was like a school bus - loud and slow, and it was fairly heavy. Overall it was much nicer to look at than ride in, but I would still be interested in owning one.

- badogg, on 10/10/2007, -8/+4So let me get this straight. They are really going to produce more of these things and not change the design at all? I always thought they were ugly. The thing looks like a Chevy Citation mated with something from Europe or something.
- RedSquaree, on 10/10/2007, -9/+3Why is everybody fascinated with the DeLorean? Cars nowadays are 10x better for the same price and usually don't look as bad.
- goat2, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2theres nothing wrong with the look, matter of fact, theres everything RIGHT
- razrielle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4theres nothing better then when you can wash a car with an sos pad
- GoatMonkey2112, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's all about the doors.
- ExSlashdotter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Not only that, but I'm all about the stainless steel finish.
- bdurkin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Well the DeLorean was first in the movie Back to the Future if you didn't pick up on that from the first 50 comments plus DeLorean actually only made a few cars in the 80's and then was busted with tons and tons of coke. It is the reason why you don't see them ever. I think I have seen them 2 or 3 times since the 80's.
- terminal157, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Actually they made quite a few of them and they were a dismal failure, all told. Then came the coke bust, but the DeLorean was probably dead by then regardless.
- allegedfastluck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0You left out the part about the feds actually giving him the money to buy the coke. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_De_Lorean#Entrapment
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1they didn't go out of business because of that. it was because they were going out of business that the company got desperate and got involved in the coke deal.
- goat2, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2theres nothing wrong with the look, matter of fact, theres everything RIGHT
- Solstice, on 10/10/2007, -6/+5In 2015, you should be able to get a hover conversion for the 1985 DeLorean. I hope that will be compatible with the new ones they're rolling off the line.
- Tolzmaniac, on 10/10/2007, -6/+4Let's hope they do it right this time.
- goat2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4there was nothing wrong the first time
- g30ph, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2I heard it was under powered, considering it looks like a fast car but really isn't. If there was anything "wrong" with the car I guess thats it.
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Well, it only needs to get up to 88 mph, right?
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1are you kidding? the company failed because it was priced in the range of high performance sports cars like lamborghinis and ferraris but when they were sold in the U.S. they only put out 130HP. the car sucked and was a complete and utter failure. its only claim to fame was the Back to the Future movies.
- goat2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1no the company failed because the owner was in a cocaine scandal
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1do some research. the owner got involved in the coke deal because he was desperate for cash as the company was already failing and on the verge of bankruptcy. the sting wasn't the cause of the company's failure.
- g30ph, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2I heard it was under powered, considering it looks like a fast car but really isn't. If there was anything "wrong" with the car I guess thats it.
- goat2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4there was nothing wrong the first time
- epilonious, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8If they actually put a real engine in it (anything above 200 HP preferably) as opposed to the 130 HP renault-volvo V6, it could actually be a very capable sports car.
Not many MR sports coupes nowadays... and it will definitely look cooler than a Boxter.- GoatMonkey2112, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It was also extremely heavy for its size due to the stainless steel body panels.
I wish they would make a modern interpretation of the DeLorean, with a better engine and not so heavy. A modern interior and cleaner more up to date lines would be nice also.- allegedfastluck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's really not all that heavy for its size. Most of the thing, save for the body panels, is fiberglass. 2712 lb curb weight...compare that with the newest generation civic weighing in at 2628-2807 lbs depending on the config.
- GoatMonkey2112, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It was also extremely heavy for its size due to the stainless steel body panels.
- jay02468, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4They have been rebuilding them for years already. And you can already buy a brand new one for about $30k. There was a special about them on TV about a year ago, probably on Discovery
- juckru, on 10/10/2007, -11/+0I am glad they are aiming for 57,500, because if it was 58,000 it would be totally out of my price range.

on the dvd set, they actually read the letter from the president of DMC. that is really cool. - anarchyx34, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Awesome, maybe this time they wont make it a POS.
- bdurkin, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1...but does it come with the flux capacitor? http://www.ohgizmo.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/05/flux_capacitor.jpg

- Wargalas, on 10/10/2007, -3/+31When this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you're gonna see some serious *****.
- orxor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4And why would i want one of these over a Lotus Exige S which is just under 60K as well?
- g30ph, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Because the Lotus doesn't travel through time. duh.
- samsonthesaxman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2the Lotus Exige S is just under 70k actually
- orxor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1From their website:

- Splitter402, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That's a RHPS reference on the article, what a failure. And quite a lot of money..
- DjOverEZ, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Proof God exists.
- damndj, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I was watching Modern Marvels the other day and they had story on the DeLorean. Apparently you can still order new DeLorean's and a company out of will hand build you one made out of the left over parts they acquired from Ireland (where they were originally made).
So, the DeLorean never really went away, although I guess the proper company will be selling them again. The ironic thing is that the company who makes them now sells them for around 40K.- undergrace, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Right - they are made by the same company that is mentioned in the story. I live in Humble, TX (it's not that little, we're right outside Houston) and they've been making these for awhile. I guess the big difference is now they will be "mass-producing" them, instead of requests only.
- gl77, on 03/31/2008, -1/+11Fifty-seven thousand dollars!!!!!! Marty! do you know what this means???
- musntSurfatWork, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0coming back in 2008??....
....from the Future! - MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -2/+1This car was cool, but BTTF put it on the map and ingrained it into not just nerd culture, but pop culture.
I'm sure Zemeckes (sp?) and Spielberg will want their cuts. - BobbyMC, on 07/21/2008, -0/+12Here's the lowdown. This DMC is technically not the DMC that went out of business. At some point years back the entirety of the original DMC was bought out by these people, spare parts and all. Since then they have been remanufacturing DeLoreans by using unused parts from the original factory and even improving on the original parts in many ways.
You can get a used DeLorean for under 30k. What they do with their remanufactures is worth a LOT more though. If you get a DeLorean with all the features from them, you get stuff like a better engine and a top of the line sound sytem with iPod interface.
What I assumed from the first announcement, and all but confirmed from this one, is that these new DeLoreans are built from scratch to increase the number of DeLoreans they actually have to sell. At some point, the awesome work they have done will catch up to them and their will be no more DeLoreans left to fix. Their reference to keeping the look made no mention of an identical build, so I would say it is safe to assume that not only will these match remanufactured DeLoreans, but may even surpass them as they are able to hand build the structure to their own specifications.
What they're going to be selling you for 57k is nowhere near a used DeLorean. It is a LITERALLY brand spankin new DeLorean, plus all the modern necessities you can't live without.- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I am just worried they will ignore nostalga for the sake of trying to "modernize" it when they start reproducing. Trying to make it's frame look more aerodynamic, adding large fins, painting it red, etc.
- directive0, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Fins and everything else.. yes that would be an unforgivable sin against nostalgia. But you can't tell me a red delorean wouldn't be hot!
http://www.outatime.it/delorean/image5red.jpg
- powerbook86, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This is so awesome. I wish I could afford one of those cars so bad. Just so I can be a true nerd and blast the Back to the Future theme while driving down the highway at 88 miles per hour... before getting pulled over and arrested by the Police. :P
- Tysto, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You don't get arrested for driving 88 miles per hour. You get lectured.
- frontporsche, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3From the pics, it doesn't look like the new design is stainless steel. :(
- InsultComedy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I hope they make a version that looks exactly the same, but with lighter materials so it doesn't weigh so much. Don't get me wrong, stainless steel looks damn cool, but inefficient.
- finalcloud33, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Maybe It will come standard with a Mr. Fusion?
