- FreddieD, on 11/17/2008, -0/+18Sketchup is by far the best CAD program I found out there for doing what I want to do. For everybody saying how there is better CAD software out there, yes they are right. If you intend on building a Boeing 747, I would not recommend Sketchup. However, with all of that high powered software comes with a pretty significant learning curve, and I have neither the time nor inclination to learn how to use high grade CAD software as all I want to do is use it as a model for woodworking projects instead of drafting it on paper.
This thing was absolutely invaluable when building my MAME arcade cabinet. It really only takes about thirty minutes to learn how to use 95% of it's features. - Sh0rtstak, on 11/17/2008, -1/+15I've been trying to use more Revit for conceptual design phases, but nothing compares to the power and simplicity of sketchup at the early stages of design. Can't wait to try this update out!
- chall2001, on 11/17/2008, -0/+13Its $500. What type of engineering program are you comparing it too?
Thats about as cheap as it gets. - brettg102, on 11/17/2008, -0/+12As someone who uses 3d modeling programs everyday...SketchUp, while severly limited when compared to industry standard programs, is great for anyone trying to learn the basics of 3d modeling. Really, once you learn one, the transition into any other program is quite quick (and it figures, every company I've ever worked for uses something different, from Inventor, to CATIA, to UG, to Solid Edge.) It's also good to get the skills needed in 3DStudio and Rhino type programs as well (less CAD...more art/animation).
- bnarch, on 11/17/2008, -0/+11I'm an architect and I use sketchup all the time. Nearly every architect I know uses it in some way. We still use autodesk for creating construction drawings but Sketchup works great for presenting designs to clients.

- minerva43, on 11/17/2008, -1/+11This is great. I've always wanted a program like this when buying furniture or redecorating my apt. I have no sense of space, so luckily this app can have it for me.
- themulf, on 11/17/2008, -0/+9Post some pics of your process/project, it would be cool to see.
- IcedKasz, on 11/17/2008, -0/+8Talk to many architects, Issius? Major firms are turning their attention towards sketchup, new students are being well trained in it, even electricians are using it to show clients what should and should not be done.
I'm in an Architecture program with full licenses for AutoCAD and Revit, yet we've still spent 15 hours this month in class learning the ins and outs of sketchup (and more time making use of it in other classes).
If I were to guess, you have a teacher who's sour towards the program. Give it a chance!

- dvsbastard, on 11/18/2008, -0/+8I work in IT and I recently used Sketch Up to redraw floor plans for a server room at a new location... Considering I have absolutely no experience using any kind of 3D design tools, sketch up was unbelievably simple to use...
- slym2k, on 11/17/2008, -1/+8Awesome news. Great program with great plug-ins. My engineer friends will like this.
- brettg102, on 11/17/2008, -0/+6I don't think SketchUp claims to be a CAD package...more of a simple 3D suite along the lines of a 3DStudioMax, Anim8or or Rhino.
- mrsteve007, on 11/17/2008, -0/+6As the IT Director for a fairly large architecture firm, we start all of our projects within sketchup for quick modeling and mockup. It makes it really easy to show a client our vision and basic dimensions of the building, and using the terrain import feature of Google Earth pro, it makes for a decently accurate layout on the client's property. After that, we export the simple model to either AutoCAD, Revit, or Archicad and do the 'real' work there. But for the front end of the design process, we've found nothing better and more simple than sketchup pro.
- lostsymphonies1, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5I work at a mid sized architecture firm...we use SketchUp for our 3d models because its very simple to learn, fairly powerful and most of all it doesn't cost ~$8,000 a seat. It is by far not THE BEST program but it is cheap and a very good alternative.
- hartley, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5I do care.
And for the rest of us out there, the windows version crashes in wine after choosing a template.
Google is pretty linux friendly, but they do understand that most desktop users are either Windows or Mac. - ry4nsm1th, on 11/17/2008, -1/+5Install Windows, problem solved.
- sirbeta, on 11/18/2008, -0/+4I really wish the dynamic component would be a part of the free version... I got excited when I saw that.
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -0/+4Kerkythea.
For example, accourding to Wikipedia, this was modelled in Sketchup and rendered with Kerkythea.

- sat0shi, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3@Averness:
You said it best yourself, it's a "niche" market. Companies spend a lot of time developing this software, maybe even as much as *gasp* an Xbox game, yet they don't have nearly the number of customers as an Xbox game has. A game is for the masses, this is for the niche market. How can the company make a profit if they sold their software at $50 a pop yet spent just as long developing it as an Xbox game that might sell a million copies compared to their few thousand? - JoeSpaceTime, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2Anyone got any advice on (free) rendering software to use with SketchUp? Ta.
- hmunkey, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2Too bad sketchup can't do much for architecture beyond appearance. If Google added a revit/cad like floor plan feature it would be perfect.
- craighoxton, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2I've always been meaning to download this and design concept spaceships and stuff...I guess I'll get it now
- Raz4Life, on 11/17/2008, -2/+4I hope the Mac version works better in this version. Whenever I use SketchUp in OS X, I have to save every five minutes and restart the app or it'll beachball for any little thing you do.
- wehrmanweb, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2I worked at an 80 Architecture firm in San Diego and currently work at a 25 person firm in Iowa City IA... Both use Sketchup Pro. We use it from SDs to DDs to CDs... When the budget doesn't allow us to do a full blown 3ds Max rendering. We use Sketchup to let the client get a better understanding of 2d plans. It's fast simple and gets the point across.
My advice is to learn it you want a job in Architecture. - Barryrowe, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2Google is Badass
- xero69, on 11/17/2008, -1/+3Wow I had forgotten about sketchup, shame on me! Time to make a model of my house and choose my new paint colors.
- brandita, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Sketchtastic.
- derlin, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1i usually go from sketchup, then import that into revit as a mass, it works great...
- minerva43, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1Hey *****, I don't spend every waking minute on google's blog, so I don't know everything they release. I also don't GIS "3d models that will organize my apartment." Like many other people normal people, it takes some hype and press releases to catch my eye. So ***** off.
- keiths, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Can you post images of what they look like?
- tdilworth, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Inventor FTW
- RedShoulder, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1I have to use it at work.
The steep learning curve of AutoCAD and $1,000 per seat license (for the "Light" version!) makes it my *least* favorite.
SketchUp for free or TurboCAD for $100 is a better choice. - diggdatt, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1They dropped Win2000 support :/
- ultrafez, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1No it doesn't.
- turbojugend23, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1I'm an architect and I use Sketchup all the time and so do many other architects I know.
- ZeNiTH456, on 11/18/2008, -1/+1If google developed this project from scratch they'd probably have it out on linux by now. Instead they bought it, made it free, and did updates from there.
I'll keep waiting until it's wine friendly. Been getting mixed reviews about wine and sketchup 6, however it didn't work for me. - JoeSpaceTime, on 11/18/2008, -1/+1Gmail needs improving. It's by no means perfect. Great, but could deffo be better.
- theOster, on 11/18/2008, -2/+2Haha.....lame.
- dankegel, on 11/20/2008, -0/+0To those people waiting for Sketchup-friendly: it will happen a lot sooner if you file bugs. See http://wiki.winehq.org/GoogleSketchup for more info. The Wine project can't fix bugs they don't know about!
- BA88, on 11/18/2008, -2/+2AutoCAD is still my favorite
- pschwar2, on 11/18/2008, -0/+0The prospect of self-aware doors gets me a little hot under the collar...
