- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+95It will remain in beta for a long time, even after everybody has two.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+58"Now searching 8,000,000,000 Contacts!"
- MarginOfError, on 10/12/2007, -1/+56They've only confirmed that it is being researched. That doesn't mean it will make it to market.
"The phone is just one of 18 R&D initiatives the company currently has underway" - CDWMobile, on 10/12/2007, -4/+48Google is getting into the mobile industry for one reason, mobile, location based advertising. Now you'll not only get ads based on your email text and search requests, but also GPS coordinates.
Put me down for one. Googles apps on the go! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+49now stealing 8,000,000,000 contacts
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31Why would Google use OSx?? They would be more likely to develop their own OS. Also, Apple would NEVER license their OS...OSx's proprietary nature keeps Apple in business.
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Why in the ***** would them having the same processor lead you to the conclusion that they will run the same OS? Apple will never license their OS, phone or otherwise.
- krabat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I can't wait to get one so I can beta test it for eleventy years!
- Satanael, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Oh man an N95? I'm still stuck with my N64...
- zlintux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Unlike a web app, which is (overall) little risk, putting a physical product onto a crowded market is high risk. It costs several times what a web app costs to develop, has a significantly higher chance of failing and is much more difficult to maintain (patches, etc).
I could easily see it not exiting the R&D stage, and I imagine a lot of Google projects never do once they figure out just how practical some things are. - pizzatsf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Apples > Oranges?
- Shane98c, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I wonder if Cisco owns the "GPhone" trademark too...
- jbella, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Did you even read the article? No one knows what this phone has feature-wise, and it may even just be a cheap phone aimed at developing countries. How do you get "ths will give the iphone a run for it's money" from that?
- dengzhi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12GOOGLE>APPLE
- dpcamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8because digg attracts retards for some reason..
- digitalarcanum, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9if google made a phone, I'd be interested. More so than an iPhone.
- oskite, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13Not only is Google going mobile, but they're moving in hardware now. I expect (c'mon, don't digg me down—it's not that far fetched) a Google computer sometime in the near future.
- nick34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It can hold 2.
Billion.
Songs. - CKR600, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Think they will hold on to "Do no evil" ?
A phone that could use my wireless network instead of the overpriced telecoms would be nice. - BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4What will they call it, the gPhone?
- insovietrussia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4My PDA has an ARM processor as well, doesn't mean it runs OS X though.
- s.lucero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I think that the fact that google is developing a phone, needs to be looked at, at a more global level.
rather than merely being competition for the iPhone, I think google is just trying to extend its reach onto a greater product landscape.
In fact, google is closely working WITH apple on the iPhone, so I don't believe in any way that this product, is intended to come into opposition to that product(iPhone).
Down the road, most of the products that will be used in society will undoubtedly be mobile devices, Thus google is trying to get a piece of this market before it REALLY takes off. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If they just make a solid phone with VOIP and GSM Capabilities, i'm good.
The snazy ones are nice, but I just want something that's gonna last a while and can survive my two-year-old. - davotoula, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the k800i rivals it, you should try it! I suspect the new k850i will rival it as well :-)
- ralfy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So what ? It will be in be BETA stage for 1-2 years. :D
- MaximegalonInfo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2From the company that makes a toolbar that inventories and stores your documents to be searchable remotely, no thank you. Compressing and storing a phone call is way to easy. Trust me, I know. I'll pay the $0.02 extra to go with carrier that offers that bit more privacy. This new precedent doesn't need to be set.
- ch33sehead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2which implies GOOGLE > oranges iff APPLE = Apples
- myfanwy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3cool, will it run openmoko?
- Dissipate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1vaporware
- battleroyalex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I hope it has a fair pricetag
- Gaines, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1We're gathering a community in preparation for the official annoucement and launch. Google has a history of releasing well researched top notch products...plus it's supposed to be made by HTC (same people who made the Sprint Mogul), run Linux, and make use of an internal GPS. What more can you ask for?!
http://www.GoogleMobilePhone.net - cwcentral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why don't they just mod a Motorola RIZR linux phone? For them to make their own phone is useless except for an R&D mental excerise.
- majeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's to a free, screen ad-supported cell phone plan. Ah, wishful thinking.
- windlike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like this Google Phone.

I would think that this would cause problems between the Apple & Google relationship. Steve Jobs just has to think that Google has "stolen" an idea and bam... Law suite.
Oh well... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this could be interesting if google release a phone,
i might be tempted by one depending on what functions it has :D,
i still haven't found a phone that can rival my old modded SE K750i/W800i though - shernshiou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yahoo Phone will be coming soon~
- doppler00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, that plan sucks. $20 for 5MB? I download that much in like 5 Minutes from T-mobile. Only pay $5/month using T-Zones, but their full data plan is only $20/month unlimited.
Your cellphone provider simply sucks if there network is so underprovisioned that they can't provide decent data services. Once the cellphone data network becomes cheaper, and you can synchronize all your information ala Google, things will be a LOT better. - chrup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yet another phone ... so what? I already have a phone that does web browsing ($20/month for 5 MB of data), unlimited SMSs (included in the same $20). Will I really be doing all that browsing at those prices? Here comes that Flash movie from the CNN home page ... wham, 2 MB gone. Now I go to YouTube ... wham another 2 MB gone ... and the picture that my buddy just posted from his new 7.1 Mega Pixel ... wham 2.1 MB - Oops, 1.1 MB over the limit, that was just $6.60 to watch some silly picture ($0.006/KB!!).
What I really want is a usable device that I can take into meetings with me, that I can take notes with, scribble down addresses, name, phone numbers, email addresses, where the hand writing recognition works and that syncs effortlessly with my Mac.
There have been attempts like this, the Newton was OK for its time, the PocketPC works sort of OK for Windows (but the HWR sux) and the Palm, well the palm just doesn't HWR at all and syching is a pain these days, at least for mac users.
Is is so difficult to design a good PDA for the right price? - nads, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Now adding google ads to 8,000,000,000 contacts
- Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Google has more shares and more money than apple, so I'm not surprised.
- Calbooz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nokia all the way
the best and most reliable phones if u buy them unlocked...too bad they're not that popular in the US... - Tolocore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 It won't be long before google will be makin their own OS, making notebooks and desktops, and blackberry-killer,then kills the ipod. I predict that google will dominate the whole industry soon and will reign for long
- movd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Cant wait for this Product,it might be an iPhone Basher but I also wait for the N95!
- DubbleA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Here is the true story that the blogs are posing on:

I MEAN, LOOK AT MY NAME!! i tell ya, i new it all before this started! - guisar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0They are like totally hoping to turn this LCD rectangle into green rectangles (or multicolored ones- depending on where you live). While I am not hoping Google turns into the new Microsoft, it's hard not to say they moving technology forward in a way, and at a rate that gives an old dog hope and optimism
- dontpanic49, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This thing should be interesting, and I can't think why, but I think a google phone would have less software restrictions than the iPhone. Not to mention I use google mail and google desktop, so I would hope there would be some compatibility there. Hopefully it costs less than the iPhone ;)
