- Bricks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+63I had a hard drive that looked like that once. Turns out it just needed a new fan.
- chingy1788, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30480MB/s...
I'd like to see that happen - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15They're probably talking about the USB 2.0 spec of 480mb (megabits) per second, a simple typo that a lot of sites and people still make.
Of course, translated to megabytes that only equals around 45Mb/sec and thats quite achievable with modern drives. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Also, the article states "up to", which we all know basically means "nowhere close to".
- Kippersa, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14And where diamonds and brilliants?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Maybe if I was into RnB, but sorry, no.
- jeriqo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12External harddrives are supposed to be outside of your computer case...
- quomen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9That would look waaay tacky in my room.
- centerblack, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I love.....GOOOOOOLLLLDDDD!!
- MikeCerm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9You made a similar mistake. The 'M' is always capital. The uppercase 'B' is used for bytes, lowercase is used for bits. So, it's 480Mb (sometimes written Mbits), or 45MB.
- Gir53457, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Your mom was.
- MikeCerm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Ha! Vista compatibility jokes would be funny, 'cept Vista's compatible with a lot more stuff than Linux or OS X.
- GawtMilk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Another victory for OSX!
Oh wait. - Tenoq, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yeah, but USB realistically only gets 300Mb/s sustained in an absolute best-case-scenario, and we usually divide by 10 for overhead. 38MB/s, if you're lucky. Why do you think FireWire is still faster, even though the spec is supposed to be slower? (400Mbps)
- Rossoneri22, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Bling Bling
- preppeller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It definitely looks like there are some heat dissipation issues, the top looks completely warped ;)
- OwdenBowden, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5This week on "Pimp My Hard-Drive" we be adding a bit of bling to this mo'fo.
- shifty2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5this would go good next to my platinum PC case, diamond studded keyboard and my Dolce & Gabbana mouse [/sarcasm]
- jeriqo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Actually it's 480Mb or 60MB. (/8)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Kind of difficult to stack.
- rootstyle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Check Firewire 400 vs USB2 real world benchmarks (not theoretical numbers) then report back to us.
- jeriqo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4People who work with video/music actually care... and most of the time, they also care about the design of their studio :)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4gold plastic is EVEN MORE tacky looking than chromed plastic.
- n3xu5, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Well it would match my grill.
- CyberBlade, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4yes, hard drives and water dont mix :P
- jeriqo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6You have a typo too... it's 45MB
Anyway, LaCie usually shows real speed.
http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10724
For this RAID drive, they say up to 82MB/s even if it has a Firewire 800 connection.

- jeriqo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Talking about fans, this drive just looks like LaCie's Porsche drive, which has a noisy fan.
According to the site, the golden drive is fanless.
Good thing. - Tenoq, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4No, it's 30MB/s because USB is crappy, not because of the conversion. Why does no-one realise this? It's a known fact, and has been since USB 2.0 first came out.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I wanna know where the gold at.... i want the gold... show me the gold.. i want the gold...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nda_OSWeyn8 - fr34k5h0w, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Well since gold is such an excellent conductor I guess it'd make sense.
- kjartan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4No firewire? 800 would be cool, but not even 400?
- mariol90, on 10/10/2007, -0/+230 MB/s is the max real-world limit for USB2 (generally). Most devices won't get over that. The theoretical max is 480 mbit/sec.
Look at benchmarks for USB hard disks, most will stay at around 25-35 MB/s.
Also, USB 2.0 came out in 2000, and wasn't really widespread until 2002 or so. - dredwolff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2if you put them side by side do they match up so you have a continuous wavy surface? if they can make it glow and change colors like magma or something I might buy a set.
- PhillyMJS, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3It's made by LaCie, so one day it will change from 'hard drive' to 'pretty coffin for your data.' I'll pass.
- qwertycopter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If a thief breaks into your home, I'm pretty sure he'll be attracted to the giant golden block sitting next to your monitor...
- inblue, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i wonder if it would be too much to 'bedazzle' it too? maybe spinning rims?
i guess it looks kinda cool... but i think i don't like the waves. - ThePolak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It looks like chocolate.
- Shaman760, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Every LaCie drive I've ever owned has shat the bed well before it's time. Looks are great but I'll take functionality over form anytime.
- kwago, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I can hardly wait to see rappers dancing and holding these things up in the air...
"...yall see what i'm holding, got so much cash mah ones and zeroes is golden" - sv650touring, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Who are you asking about Firewire?
Most of the time FireWire has higher actual throughput, even thought it has a lower theoretical maximum. Also, Firewire puts less of a load on your cpu (I've had a big USB hard drive transfer cripple a P4). And if you really want to see it, use 2 hard drives and compare a FW->FW transfer with a USB2->USB2 transfer. - tmcdigg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Does Dr. Evil get a free gold usb/firewire cable to go with that?
- ikrit2006, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Anyone else think this was going to be a hard drive that stored its data on gold...?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2It's very sad that companies like this simply RUIN the idea of gold. They put gold on their ***** products like it somehow makes them better!
BTW, how does a gold hard drive make it to the front page and my new gold Macbook Pro doesn't? - LucasKane, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think that's really the T-1000 ready to kill you
- samury, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Ooo, ostentatious.
- kjartan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1oops double post
- MonkeyFCoconut, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Why don't they just make it with a big downward pointing arrow neon sign that says STEAL ME!
- sv650touring, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1IF you are working with a single drive, not transferring large amounts at a time, and not using the computer for other things at the same time then you would be right.
However, in the real world, regular FireWire 400 makes a better external hard drive interface than USB. It works faster and leaves your system noticably more responsive. Don't believe it? Read the benchmarks. Don't believe them? Try it for yourself.
This applies to PCs, but it applies doubly to Macs because while Mac firewire support is better than Windows, the USB 2.0 support lags behind. - SheilaNoya, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It looks pretty tacky to me too. Besides - It's too wavy on top. If I set my glass of Scotch on top of that thing it would fall right over.
