I say that cause one of my friends just got billed $5000US for using a preview version of an image that is licensed by a stock photo company. The ***** use programs that crawl the Internet to find copyright infringements and use that as basis to "create new clients". The funny thing is that he did not even download the image from their website but from a javascript tutorial website. Everything there completely sucks and you can't use it for much of anything outside of a desktop photo. Useless. No Digg.

The tutorial said to use it. There was no direct or indirect mention of any copyrights on the image. The original file name was changed, hence he could not have used that as a search parameter. The gif's copyright info, if there was any to begin with, was long gone since the image was gimped. Point is there was no way for him to tell.
Crap like this can only come from US companies where the national sport is using the context of the law as premise to screw people over. In a nutshell what they are telling him is "We are attempting to extort $5000 from you and if you do not comply we will take you to court where it will cost you a hell of a lot more than the friendly fee we are charging you right now."
If you are interested, read this from the Wall Street Journal.

No need to ask permission from each photographer of which you want to use the image. Not as many yet as sxc.hu though but still 12500 and growing.
