- digmystuff, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4flex is awesome for rapid, broad reach RIA UI development, I use it with a java backend...
- Jamminn, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3Having finished two good size Flex projects over the last year I would say yes, it is.
Although, im not the biggest ActionScript fan tbh. - digmystuff, on 12/02/2008, -2/+5do you use the internet?
- pbol01, on 12/02/2008, -1/+4The Internet is a one-day wonder, just like the automobile and the aeroplane...
- jerrolds, on 12/02/2008, -1/+3Flex is the development platform for Flash.
Flex is Flash.
You get an SDK, develop with their Flex Builder IDE (based on Eclipse) with a pretty complete suite of programming tools and deploy with a number of backend options - FredFredrickson, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2Could someone explain to me what the hell Flex is?
- digmystuff, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2Yeah AS is getting better though, AS3 was a major improvement and AS4 is leaning toward a more C# type syntax...
- Olfster, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2Send the work to India. Much cheaper. What is an advanced Flex developer? Someone that knows how to spew Adobe marketing jargon to clients? Someone that wears white framed sunglasses when the sun isn't out? This industry never changes. Flex is weak. A sure sign of weakness is when emphasis is placed on marketing and not on assuring the application of a technology helps the client. Times are changing folks, these things are not going to be as easy to sell to the people who are responsible for coming in under budget. Not even for "advanced Flex developers."
- yoshihama, on 12/02/2008, -1/+3It's a declarative framework for developing user interfaces for rich internet applications, which can be delivered over the web as Flash swf's, or as client installable Air applications.
If that doesn't make sense, check the source: http://www.adobe.com/flex - misterjangles, on 12/02/2008, -1/+2If you use Blaze on the server, it handles the plumbing and you can expose your services as SOAP, ASM, etc. We also use WebORB which allows you to write your service in PHP. We've been having great success using a Flex client for our web services. I'm curious what part is giving you grief? Maybe you'll save me some headache down the road!
- andywebb95, on 12/02/2008, -1/+2Yes and yes.
I am currently wrapping up version 1.0 of an specialized online accounting package.
One of the requirements was that it had to be an RIA that looked and behaved the same across all major browsers (including IE6).
Since we are a small shop we don't have the time to put into the "AJAX" route. Flex was the perfect fit. Not only do we not have to worry about browser quirks but we have added functionality that would not be possible with an AJAX solution. The end result is we have a product that is highly interactive, pleasing to the eye, and easy to maintain and upgrade.
The only major complaint I have is the large download size for the SWFs.... however starting with Flex 3 and later versions of the Flash player it has become much easier to reduce the file size and keep it down. - misterjangles, on 12/02/2008, -1/+2Experienced Flex developers are in demand at the moment and are difficult to find. If you're a Flex master in the Chicago area, send me a PM!
(In other words, yes it is worth it and lucrative) - Olfster, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1The only thing they improved was the pretty shading colors. Ohh, and a couple new marketing buzzwords. Microsoft wants their 1998 marketing plan back. Psss, don't tell the guy in the white sun glasses, he really has no clue.
- yoshihama, on 12/02/2008, -1/+2I work for a rather large international computer company, and I know that many of our enterprise software teams have already adopted Flex. Those that haven't are looking into where they can fit it in their roadmaps. The anecdotal evidence suggest that it triples UI developer productivity over Swing and traditional web apps, and easily cuts QA time in half since it runs cross-platform cross-browser in a single Flash run-time environment. So the short answer is that it's worth learning and is in demand.
- digmystuff, on 12/02/2008, -1/+2Yeah we use BlazeDS, and Spring/SOAP.... But we have a very complex backend, multiple namespaces etc. We have been forced to use one namespace just to get the damn thing to work with Flex, which is retarded from a dev. standpoint. Apparently they fixed the issue to some degree in FB4/Gumbo but even using the latest Beta 4 SDK we still are experiencing the namespace issues. Here is the adobe bug for reference:
https://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FB-12201
Still love flex from a UI dev standpoint. I just think Adobe needs to focus on real-world implementations rather than tutorials on how to skin buttons and create "hello world" services. - Olfster, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1It really is an easy technology to learn. My nine year old "Advanced Flex Developer" whipped up a pretty app in minutes. MYSQL data source to boot.
- Olfster, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1Dare I? Nah. I will pass.
- iKnowKungFoo, on 12/02/2008, -1/+2@noalarms: Flex is one of the most lucrative technologies right now. I was at the Adobe MAX conference a couple of weeks ago and there were signs all over from companies looking for advanced Flex developers. I know companies in Dallas, Florida and Chicago that have work booked for the next few years using Flex, AIR and ColdFusion.
- FredFredrickson, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1I think I got it now, thanks for clearing that up for me everyone. :)
- brettuthius, on 12/02/2008, -1/+2Flex must be getting popular if I keep seeing all sorts of tutorials about it hit the internetz. Last one I saw about it was about game development;
http://www.brighthub.com/internet/web-development/ ...
Makes me curious to actually learn and use it. Guess I'll need to put my tv remote and beer down at night and weekends. - keeperofkeys, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1"a more C# type syntax"
... and that's a good thing, is it? I code both C# and various dynamically-typed languages like AS2, Javascript and python, and have to say that moving back to C# and its strong typing is a pain in the arse, without much gain for the programmer. - MindTrigger, on 12/02/2008, -1/+2Two good developer related articles in ONE day? Amazing. Reminds me of Digg 3 years ago.
- FI5HERMAN, on 12/02/2008, -2/+3Thankyou count me in !!!!
- Kinsbane, on 12/02/2008, -1/+1This is relevant to my interests.
- gametavern, on 12/02/2008, -1/+1programming/design type, based on flash actionscripting.
- elduquex26x, on 12/02/2008, -1/+1Number 4: headshot01.jpg, headshot01.jpg, WhiteShirt..hmm..
- etx313, on 12/02/2008, -1/+1I don't know how to explain it, but I've been learning it for the past two days now and I can only describe it as AWESOME!
- njfinn, on 12/02/2008, -1/+1Yes. As someone that learned it and tries to hire good people. It is something we search for and pay top dollar.
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -1/+1An ActionScript based framework for application development. Google it!
- Dubbsacc, on 12/02/2008, -1/+1Questions for Flex Devs. I've been trying to find out some specifics on the application itself which I can't seem to find, and to be honest I kind of gave up. All I've been able to find is marketing fluff which does nothing for me.
Is ActionScript the primary coding language in FLEX? Is this used just for the UI or is it used for retrieving database information? If any, what other programming language can be used? (VBScript, C#, PHP, JAVA, etc) Which is the best (in your opinion) programming language to use in conjunction with FLEX?
When you deploy the application is it simply an .flv file? Does it require the Flash Player ActiveX plugin to be viewed by the end user?
Now my only experience using Flash to interact with a code page (ASP/VBScript) was an absolutely horrible experience. Between the page caching issues and having to put a random timer on a query string to bring the user to a fresh page, to executing the code page and returning usable variables. The whole thing sucked. Has Adobe improved in this area interacting with other programming languages? - inactive, on 12/02/2008, -1/+1Very good post: I was looking for Flex resources for a nu app, Im pleased !
- geoken, on 12/02/2008, -1/+1It's an XML like language (called MXML) that uses simple markup to instantiate actionscript based components and attributes to set their parameters.
It co-exists with actionscript similar to how HTML and javascript co exists. - BoneStamp, on 12/02/2008, -1/+1Flex is developer focused framework for building Flash Player content (applications, games...etc). Flash on the other hand is a designer focused IDE and framework for building Flash Player content.
- BoneStamp, on 12/02/2008, -1/+1Also checkout flexbox, it's where I go first when I'm looking for a custom component:
http://flexbox.mrinalwadhwa.com/ - derekmas10, on 12/02/2008, -1/+1why, Flex is how you show off your guns
*kisses biceps* - BoneStamp, on 12/02/2008, -1/+1I've been developing in flex for just over 3 years and it has been very lucrative, particularly in the past 2 years.
- TeeLaw, on 03/16/2009, -1/+1Web design, photographies, free vectors http://iniwoo.net
- BoneStamp, on 12/02/2008, -1/+1You have a much larger reach with Flex applications, but Flex apps won't run on most mobile devices. So, I guess it depends on what type of apps you want to build or what type of development you're interested in.
- BoneStamp, on 12/02/2008, -1/+1Yup, most companies can't hire enough good flex people.
- digmystuff, on 12/02/2008, -2/+1Nice resource. Sucks that Flex's webservice implementation is still in the stone age, hopefully FlexBuilder 4 will remedy that...
- melonhedd, on 12/02/2008, -2/+1These tools have nothing to do with lexical analysis!
