- capecodcarl, on 02/19/2008, -10/+118Al Qaeda's air force doesn't stand a chance against us with these things.
- goosnargh, on 02/19/2008, -5/+69Do a barrel roll!
- Obzerva, on 02/19/2008, -5/+47The eurofighter would get straight owned by the F-22. They even say so on their website.

- purag66, on 05/13/2009, -2/+38The SU-35 also has a radar signature of a 747, not to mention that it needs to use afterburners to go past Mach 1. Combine the thrust-vectoring maneuverability of the F-22, "supercruise" ability, and an internal weapons bay that gives it a radar signature of an eagle, and the SU-35 is pure garbage.
Not saying you're wrong, but the tone of your comment warranted my response. - hydroplane, on 02/19/2008, -4/+35Vectored thrust FTW
- wc3452, on 02/19/2008, -2/+30You mean their fleet of 747s....? I'm a terrible person...:(
- alexgrimmy, on 02/19/2008, -2/+29Time to film Top Gun 2 with this badass in it
- Rageous, on 02/19/2008, -0/+25My next door neighbor was the project manager for the F-22. The most notable thing he talked about were the field tests against a variety of other aircraft, such as putting up 8 to 12 F-18's against a single F-22. The final overall tally of simulated "kills"? 400 to 8. There's not a single pilot in the world who wouldn't feel invincible in the F-22.
- minoss, on 02/19/2008, -3/+27Not really straight up owned. That basically says the F-22 is 2x the price for slightly more effectiveness. Granted, this is most likely not an unbiased assessment so the difference is probably more dramatic than they say.
- nihilite, on 02/19/2008, -26/+49Anyone else feel like the US is becoming that idiot who buys expensive rims for the cadillac while they can't afford to buy groceries? Now we'll show this off to everyone and beg China for a little cash to pay the rent.
- vroom101, on 02/19/2008, -6/+25After watching the USAF F-22A Raptor do all that super-... superman- ... supermano- ... you know that really big near-unpronouncable word used in the title, it's clear the F-22A (a) isn't your daddy's F-14 Tomcat (ret.), (b) nor is it your uncle's F/A-18 Hornet or F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, and (c) neither is it grandfather's F-15 Eagle or F-15E Strike Eagle. The F-22A Raptor fighter jet is in league all its own!
Here are a couple of F/A-18F Super Hornet demos that include that "sitting in midair" or "sitting on the edge of a stall" trick:

Radio dies as F22 slips right back out of airspace. - jonr, on 02/19/2008, -13/+29Yes, that is really useful in modern guerrilla warfare...
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -9/+25We arent beta males like you.
- sharkd, on 02/19/2008, -0/+16I used to work in relatively high echelons of the National Security arena -- I've spoken with a couple of USAF Chiefs of Staff, AWFC Commanders, CNOs and senior Naval Aviators about the Raptor and the Super Hornet.
1) The Raptor's high flyaway cost has senior AF and DoD officials concerned about using the aircraft in a hostile batllespace. The cost of replacement comes to about the cost of 2-3 F-15s or F-16s, even equipped with AESA radars and advanced data links, and the technology is such that the loss of even one aircraft could prove a boon to competing nations.
2) The Raptor is much larger than the F-15, and accordingly has a longer visual acquisition range. As the United States has not engaged in a BVR battle since Vietnam, and ROE almost always prohibit BVR engagement, the 2-dimensional thrust vectoring, lack of an off-boresight IR engagement capability and larger visual signature, theoretically place the F-22 at a disadvantage in ACM against a Su-35/Su-37-class opponent (which has MATV, HMS and IR engagment). Of course, for them to be a threat, they'd have to be fielded, and with competent pilots.
3) The Super Hornet is a dog. It looks impressive at airshows due to the exceptional nose authority at high-alpha, and the chines help it make low speed passes (the angle to the audience help the passes look even slower). In combat, it still exhibits all the issues of the F/A-18 (which the Super Hornet has little commonality with) -- short unrefueled range, poor loiter time over targets, low bring-back capacity, in addition to the E/F's new wrinkle: airflow interaction between ordnance/pylons and the upper/outer wing surfaces. The potentially deadly wing-droop problem that plagued the Super Hornet's EMD phase was never fixed completely -- pilots are simply told not to perform certain maneuvers in certain conditions. Every single pilot and NFO that I've spoken to after having made the transition from the Tomcat to the Super Hornet has lauded the aircraft's reliability, but slammed its performance -- and then they note that every new airplane works well, at first. - lbmouse, on 02/19/2008, -9/+25two words: ***** Sandwhich
- Terrk, on 02/19/2008, -8/+23The F-22's stealth is amazing, but one thing is for sure, it cannot out maneuver a SU-37, which only costs 30 million. And the SU-37 has been around for a hell of a lot longer then the 22.
Not only that, the soviet union doesn't force there pilots to retire after hitting 35. So the people in the SU-37's are much more experienced then the majority of our fighter pilots.
Just because something cost a lot, doesn't mean its the best.
I am in the air force, so don't think I'm some SU loving fanboy. - Pixelante, on 02/19/2008, -6/+21As much as the Eutodrones will hate this fact, the F-22 outperforms the Typhoon in every single aspect. Add this to the fact that more Raptors will be made than Typhoons, and Europe will be left gnashing teeth for another three decades.
- jbassfretless, on 02/19/2008, -3/+17yes but in russia the plane flies you
- robbothan, on 02/19/2008, -1/+14The Eurofighter is a Generation 4.5 fighter whereas the F22 is Gen 5. Its super cruise, stealth and ASEA radar are superior to the Eurofighter for Beyond Visual Range Combat - however Eurofighter is more manuvarable. Not that they'll see a fight with each other!

The US is #46 in Military spending, when you compare it to GDP. Numbers are fun when you put them in context. Random data without context is meaningless.
And who is right next to us:
United States: $0.24 per $10 of GDP
France: $0.23 per $10 of GDP
Tre magnifique! - Petrarch1603, on 02/19/2008, -3/+15the eurofighter is a great aircraft, but it lacks stealth. In an F-22 versus Eurofighter scenario, the EF will be shot down before it even knows there's a raptor in its sector.
- WestEast, on 02/19/2008, -6/+17Now, if the US could just find Pilots that dont always seem to blow the ***** out of British troops, they would be onto a winner.
- Gunsotsu, on 02/19/2008, -2/+13While all this is nifty and neat-o at air shows, it has no use in ACM. The two things that the Raptor has going for it that makes it better than anything else in the air is it's stealth capabilities and it's ability to super cruise.
As any fighter pilot, speed is life. - Kauzman01, on 02/19/2008, -2/+13Get these guys off me, Fox!
- naiku, on 02/19/2008, -1/+11Eurofighter isn't stealth. The F22 is....
The F22 can make 1.72 mach without afterburn.
The Eurofighter can make 1.2-1.3 mach without afterburn. - Petrarch1603, on 02/19/2008, -4/+14the eurofighter is a great aircraft, but it lacks stealth. In an F-22 versus Eurofighter scenario, the EF will be shot down before it even knows there's a raptor in its sector.
- Harabeck, on 02/19/2008, -1/+11Have any of you seen reenactments of modern dogfights? Agility doesnt matter, training and avionics do. Its all about getting your shot off first, not how tight you can turn.
- BuckCynnie, on 02/19/2008, -0/+10Radar signature of a really frigging fast eagle.
- mattmollysdad, on 02/19/2008, -0/+10I want one.
- Yoweigh, on 02/19/2008, -5/+15That guy has a good point. Why's he being dug down?
- pitdog, on 02/19/2008, -0/+10It is all very nice but.. is it GREEN?
What about the environment? ;) - tomj88, on 02/19/2008, -0/+10Not more capable - just more maneuverable. Russian fighters have typically been much more maneuverable in the air, but their avionics have always been far behind US and French/British fighters.
- legendxx, on 02/19/2008, -5/+14Part of being number one is believing and taking pride in your military. Go back to my little pony.
- ours, on 02/19/2008, -2/+10Maybe the Chinese.
But yeah I understand that this one isn't going to change things in Iraq. No plane will do that. - strictnein, on 02/19/2008, -0/+8I prefer to pay a little extra for an alive pilot and an intact plane.
Eurofighter: $122.5 mil. (2007 flyaway cost)
F-22: US$137.5 million (2008 flyaway cost
Sure the exchange rate has something to do with that, but even so. - neko6, on 02/19/2008, -0/+8I would rather have one air-superiority fighter and another bomber over two combination jets. Seems to give the edge.
I mean, if you need a lawyer and an accountant, you'd take a professional lawyer and a different professional accountant - you don't look for a person who has both a lawyer license and an accountant license - he's bound to be less good than a pro. - inactive, on 02/19/2008, -1/+9This coming from a English twit who still thinks the English have an empire!
- legendxx, on 02/19/2008, -4/+12We design our military to fight other REAL armies.. china, russia etc. They arn't cowards and don't use guerrilla warefare. And wtf is modern about what they are doing to us in iraq?
But I guess you'd rather design better cave fighting weaponry so china can run right over us when they want to. Believe it or not our total casualties for the Iraq/Afghanistan over the last 7 years is nothing compared to if a real nation went to war with us. I'd rather be prepared for the worst. - Slizzo, on 02/19/2008, -2/+10Actually, the F-22 is supposed to be a Multi-Role aircraft. Add in that it has the radar cross-section of a bumble bee (when there are no external armaments, which it is capable of carrying) and that it can cruise at mach speeds (cruise is 90% throttle, no afterburner) it looks to be an amazing aircraft.
Oh, and I'm a big fan of the engines in the F-22 as they are made in my home state, not more than 10 miles from where I live. They're Pratt & Whitney engines by the way, and that's in the good old state of Connecticut. - MJDub, on 02/19/2008, -0/+8There will be about 5 times as many 35's as there will be 22's when the next generation gets fully phased in. The 35 has only one engine and probably doesn't has nearly as many cool features that will stay classified. Consider the F-22 the Spartans of the Air Force.
- Yoweigh, on 02/19/2008, -2/+10You're becoming more like your father.
- tripzero, on 02/19/2008, -3/+11You can debate which is more mobile of an aircraft all you want. The simple fact is you can shoot down what you can't see and the F-22 is almost invisible to most radar systems.
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -2/+9China, Russia, N. Korea would like to say hi.
Just because CURRENT battles are fought street to street doesn't mean in the future we will not need this.
You can't develop aircraft like this in a short time period if the ***** hits the fan like we did in WWII. The best strategy is have the best weapon by a factor of 2 at all times. - inactive, on 02/19/2008, -1/+8Everyone in America came from immigrants, Even the Natives had to walk there asses here from the north. That is the key to America's past dominance we're the ***** Borg man.
- miriv365, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7That's nothing. I once saw an F-14 Tomcat do a 4g inverted dive with a MiG28
- thecontinental, on 02/19/2008, -3/+10Yeah, all they need are roadside bombs to do us in. All this technology and we still can't stop a bozo hiding a bomb in the road.
- MindTrigger, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7The F35 is the one we are sharing with our NATO allies. F22 > F35
