- riven, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Very cool concept, but unfortunately its nothing more than a rendering with fantasy specifications from Nov-2003. The 'prototype' referenced in the article is not a physical prototype, just the rendering.
- inverselimit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Dude, this is from 2003, and never went anywhere. Sadly.
- bnoble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Whoa! Whatcha riding?"
"An Embrio!"
"An Embryo?"
"Yeah! An Embrio!"
"Eeeeew." - harmlessinc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Thanks fudged - I was staring at the picture trying to remember where the heck I had seen it before.
I already found the Slashdot story on this bike from 2003

"Bombardier's Hot Wheel
Posted by timothy on Wed Nov 12, '03 03:52 AM" - sovok, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Almost 3 years old: http://www.brp.com/en/Media.Centre/Press.Releases/2003.07.09.htm
- Trepan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8This design from Bombardier has been around for at least 1 year, maybe even two.
- reqage, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Next thing you know, they will come out with the "It" from South Park.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm constantly amazed at the number of people on Digg that hate on anything new. All of you that like to jump in right away with things like "it will never work" and "oh gosh, I might hurt myself" - have you ever created *anything* original, yourself?
I swear to god, if innovation depended on Diggers approving of it, we'd all still be riding horses and using carrier pigeons to send messages. - Nimrod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5ONLY 360lbs???? Get a 25lb bike, fatass.
- rc_collins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4thanks for the 3 year old news.
--dan - TVarmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree. I'm in a US FIRST team (A project by Dean Kamen to spread engineering to young impressionable minds) and the other members seem to be reverent of the device. They claim that it allows you to move faster than walking, while not requiring a fuel inefficient car. But isn't that a bike?
Also, I don't get why it needs to be self-balancing. Why not have four wheels on the platform? You could still turn 180 degrees on a dime, less energy would be spent on balancing it, fewer electronics would be needed to control it (keeping costs down so a non-executive can afford it), and you would maintain the "line of sight" posture with other people that so many claim to be the key feature of this product. - bnoble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Amazing! That kids grandma is going to be SO pissed when she sees him ***** around on her wheelchair. But in all seriousness, that sucked.
- DanAtkinson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4A very very nifty piece of kit!
Does anyone have a video of this concept in motion? - ryank808, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My $25,000 question is, how much? I'd love to have a Segway, but who can justify paying half the price of a brand new (small) car for one? Maybe if the Segway had been $500 instead of $5,000, the inventor's dream of selling millions and revolutionizing cities could have truly been realized.
- XDataBurn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice! Something else that nobody will buy!
- riven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3quicktime turntable video - http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,61216,00.html
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10how the F did this make front page? c'mon guys.... this was in popular science maybe two years ago.... maybe more. i'm not even kidding with this one, this is a dinosaur.
still good, mind you - Infekted, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3damn.. how old is this thing... i thought they had made some other progress.. but its still the same.
they already have this thing in japan... but a prototype ofcourse.
im not sure how big that one is but if its as small as the scooter. then forget it. - nonstopdoc1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2segways are LAME
I can understand using if you are disabled or a senior citzens but when I see a fat lazy ass riding the stupid thing its not only funny but pathetic - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, they do show someone riding on it - have a look at the video: http://www.brp.com/BRPCorporate/_Static/en-CA/embrio.html
In my opinion, the rider looks cool as *****. If this were on the market today, I'd be the first in line. - krolls, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The answer to the horseless Carriage is beatings for anyone lame enough to drive around on one of those things. Or at least pointing and laughing, maybe throwing of small objects. This is why the terrorists hate us. Apparently americans are getting so fat and lazy that we'd rather drive around on a ridiculous and expensive horseless Carriage rather than ride a horse. Its called riding, people have done it for millions of years. Seems to be working out fine for most of us so far.
- gadkins74, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=segway_more_complicated_than_it_needs_to_be
... just sayin - Toiling, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3the handle bars are right under the windshield. Der
- spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Polo would ROCK on one of these things!
- drjoe047, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I don't think this concept can actually work.
There are 100's of technical reasons why I don't think this concept has a chance of working even in prototype, yet alone in production.
There are unicycles that self balance, but they are not for the faint of heart.
See here: http://www.tlb.org/eunicycle.html video included. - snipes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5No handlebars? Cool.
- everfalling, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2do you know how friggin old this article is? digg has gotta stop reaching back in time for gadgets that came out years ago. this isn't even a working model, it's a concept design. Yeah it's neat, but common, find stuff that's a little more current.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4That seems weird to ride.
Don't forget to get your copy of "The Eight Biggest Mistakes Investors Make". Lol, nice ad. - nroose, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yes, it does have handlebars.
Yes, it is from 2003 or 2004. - rebattim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"like an ATV, the fact that you have to lean in order to turn" Am I missing something, don't most ATV's have four wheels?
- perseon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was just going to say that.
By the way, is it me, or does digg.com look different? - idiggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The recreational segment of Bombardier has been split and sold the the Bombardier family and is now called Bombardier Produits Recréatifs (BPR) based in Valcourt, Québec, and which was what the founder, Joseph-Armand Bombardier, created... well, at least the Ski-Doo part, or more generally vehicles adapted for winters. The planes building part came when the Bombardier company bought Canadair in the 80's, and the trains building came by contracting the building of Montréal's subway transits trains and by acquiring several other train manufacturers. All this to say that there are now two Bombardier entities, the recreational product part, and the remaining big entity which builds planes and trains.
- Nick_Wilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I was just curious as to why people care whether some old news is posted. I never saw this before, and if indeed it was posted in popular science a few years back - it means I never read it. Info is free, and while I agree that old news might not be relevant to some people, the fact that it was dug to the first page means there are others that may not have seen it either.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4That's freaking sweet. I'd seriously consider buying it, IF it had just a little storage space. And I didn't have to pay to replace the tyres!
Anyway, was just googling for something similar I've seen before. Managed to find this instead. Another interesting concept.
http://www.gizmag.com.au/go/3319/2/ - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The answer to the segway is beatings for anyone lame enough to ride around on one of those things. Or at least pointing and laughing, maybe throwing of small objects. This is why the terrorists hate us. Apparently americans are getting so fat and lazy that we'd rather ride around on a ridiculous and expensive little scooter rather than take a few steps. Its called walking, people have done it for millions of years. Seems to be working out fine for most of us so far.
- wonginator1221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1steal.... how about hotwire or sabotage.
image someone getting back on their embrio after its been sabotaged. lean forward... and the ground comes up enexpectedly - ek3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1+digg 'cause of awesome tagline.
- krolls, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Segway Inc. already has something similar that is a working prototype
http://www.segway.com/products/centaur/ - XSforMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now you've done it, did you ever stop to think about all the poor segway riders who just never learned to ride a bike? Gosh man! When will people stop discriminating against imbeciles with too much money and too few skills?
- dombi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I wanna see this crusing down the road, then the balancing system screwing up... can you say ouch?!
...and yes, this one is pretty old. - chessmen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow I can't believe I read only one "Venus Wars" reference. I mean none of you guys are excited at the prospect of battling a rival team of guys riding on these things using like bats and crowbars?
Oh yeah this thing is like 10x cooler than any lame as segway. That is all. - Smoker88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I dont want to ride a unfertilized baby! Gross!
- Matajuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you look back to older episodes of DBZ you can clearly see a biker gang that rides one wheeled motor cycles just like that.
- Cambo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this is hella cool
- triplep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm glad someone else realized that the article was factually incorrect as well.
Also Bombardier(not BRP) is a publicly traded company, as noted by about 3 different share types that trade. Even at the time of the story, in 2003, that isn't correct.
Nice fact checking Forbes! - Snarky1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so true!
- TheCasablancan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Didn't they have something like this in the old Johnny Quest Cartoons?
Neat though, I'd be nervous about stopping quickly though. - elastikos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love the design of this thing!
- daddiogig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This company put a great number of people from my hometown out on their asses when they took over Johnson Motors and Evinrude Motors. They don't pay the retirement for the people who had put their whole life into these companies because they simply sell off part of their interests and then say they are no longer responsible. I wouldn't support a damn thing they do because of that. They have a history of taking over American companies and then firing everybody so they can then hire an all new crew at very reduced wages. It might seem fiscally smart, but when you just about wipe out a town, it's not. Loyal Johnson Motor users switched to their biggest rival Mercury when these canadian bastards took over. Damn french disguised as North Americans.
