Dodge unveils the killer Demon Concept
autoblog.com — The Demon Concept from Dodge is a small, rear-wheel drive roadster that for all intent and purpose is aimed squarely at the Mazda MX-5 Miata. Similar in size and shape, the Demon's powered by a 172-hp four-cylinder engine driving the rear wheels. It's a hot little number and will surely be a hit at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

- crombenevolant, on 10/12/2007, -7/+39Sadly, another cool car that dodge won't build. Instead we get crap like the Nitro....
- snutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26I agree. Dodge Razor anyone?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodge_Razor - MiddleGirth, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3They'll build it; it's not like they have to retool much since it's just a Chrysler Crossfire with a new front end.
- noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11They probably give up on these concepts once they realize that their traditional formula of huge engine and crap handling doesn't apply to roadsters.
- gfair, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Even if they did produce it, it doesn't take away from the fact that the domestics are in serious trouble financially, and in a few years time we might start to see them topple, in which case Dodge should be focussing more on finding a way to achieve profitability, rather than making small-run sports cars to compete in an already very competitive segment.
- CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19Looks like an S2000 but uglier. Dodge should stick to cars that use the HEMI engine becuase it seems like thats the only thing they're good at (that and not making hybrid cars is also something they're known for).
- modsuperstar, on 10/12/2007, -15/+10Dodge seems to entirely miss the point. Instead of trying to make economical cars they keep churning out these muscle cars and gas guzzling SUV hybrids. It's all well and good to sell cars with big engines, but it makes no business sense at all when there is so much heightened awareness about the environment and fuel prices.
- Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13RTFA..
"It does, however, use one of DCX's existing engines – the 2.4L four-cylinder World Engine that sends 172 horsepower and 165 ft-lbs. of torque to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. Dodge officials tell us a number of engines could be used in the Demon, including the 1.8 or 2.0L World Engine."
My guess is that it won't be a gas guzzler...being smaller than the Crossfire (which gets 25+mpg hwy...not great but not a guzzler) and using one of their existing I4 engines......wouldn't exactly call it a "muscle" car - macfanboi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8S2000 and Z350 love child?
- mguerrero10, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i think it'll go into production though the color does it no justice. looks like the offspring of a viper and crossfire.
- texpundit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Screw the Razor and the Demon. I still want a Tomahawk.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodge_Tomahawk - solemnraven, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3i bet it will handle like a cargo ship.
- gxcdesign, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7It's an S2000 without the sweet redline
- LogicBomB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Rather than coming out with more uselessly fast novelty cars, why don't car companies start trying to release the best, innexpensive car they can? Seriously, the market is in desperate need for small, innexpensive city-runners.
Nothing luxurious or fast or shiney but it needs to go from driveway to grocery store in under $5-7k. - Nitro420, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I know it may not handle as well as the MX-5, but it will handle well. It only weighs 2500lbs. It is hard to mess up the handling on a FR car that only weighs that much. Heck, that is almost 300lbs lighter than the solstice (which handles pretty well) and barely heavier than the MX-5.
- Cr0z, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7What a pity it's so damn ugly.
- Nerfdude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Pity that Dodge can't get over that crossbeam grille. It's stunning from all angles except the front.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Combine 1 cup Honda S2000 front, 1 cup Audi TT tail, 1 cup BMW Z4 side, and a dash of 350Z. Mix thoroughly, then half bake. Garnish with a big, ugly Dodge grille. Serve cold.
Bon appetite!

- snutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26I agree. Dodge Razor anyone?
- aidenuncle48, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1I actually like the Razor better. The Demon is not as raw as the Razor, IMHO. Yeah, this isn't going to be built, it doesn't even have a top, though Dodge said it would get a cloth one were it to be produced, but again, not gonna happen.
- GaffleSnipe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Kinda resembles the BMW Z4
- noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Which was also created to compete with the Miata. What a startling coincidence.
- eddie72, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah that's exactly what I saw when I looked at the car. The BMW Z
- kenvsryu, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I hope they price it under $20k otherwise it'll be another bust.
- chicbicyclist, on 10/12/2007, -12/+24Too bad it's a Dodge.
- moley, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5Beautiful car...too bad it is Chrysler/Benz rubbish.

and Mazda has helped ford out plenty,
just look at them now!
Chrysler is the only company in the the big three with a decent design - xfTwitch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@kro762
Your assertion about the quality of the Damler/Chrylser design is a bit misplaced. They make tough looking trucks, but their cars are nothing to write home about. (with the exception of a few of the higher end merc's...
The solstice/sky from GM looks better. I'm sure the BMW or Porsche Boxter will be faster and the Miata or Honda S2000 will, I'm sure, handle better. Thus, making this a rather redundant, not to mention HIDEOUSLY ugly pile of metal and plastic from Dodge a rather lonely place at the bottom of the roadster heap.
- HabboX, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5To me it looks like what a Nissan 350Z would look like if it was built by Dodge.
- JeyNyce, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Is it me or does it looks EVIL?
- stoneg64, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Rather then I evil, I think it just looks ugly. I hate that Dodge grill on a little car like that.
- voyetra8, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1If by "EVIL" you mean "pathetic," then yes, it's totally EVIL.
- Antitheft, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1If by EVIL you mean Miata.
- Deval, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16more like a honda s2000 look-a-like
- VorpalK, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6Completely agree. Looks like a S2000 with a dodge grille. Hardly innovative.
- Shurato, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Have to agree. I thought it was an S2000 with a bodykit.
- wrenchone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It looks like a Viper rear-ended a S-2000 and just kept right on going through the car.
I like it. - Boofster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3...and about half the HP out of a bigger engine. Go Dodge performance.
- spc2226, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Only Dodge I have even thought looked cool
- Tenroh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10 You mean to tell me this: http://viper.dragtimes.com/gallery.html doesn't look cool?
- evilbeatfarmer, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3The only thing cool about the viper is the monster engine
- popfrogs, on 10/12/2007, -11/+7Nope, the Viper has always looked ungainly and retarded. Kinda like freshwater dolphins that have the super bubble head vs. seagoing dolphins. It's also got NSX disease, on the market for 15 years and hasn't changed at all. Supercars like these need a little refreshing now and then. Sure, it has an amazing engine, but it lacks refinement that equally fast cars have. I guess there's some sort of visceral thrill you get driving it, but there are much better cars available for the money.
- Boyblundr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23What's with Dodge lately and their "Let's make everything look like a block, or like something that got hit in the front end really hard" attitude?
Has anyone else noticed that?- jcaino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5it's called creating (re-imaging) a brand
- LMControl, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5Looks like ass... like most things Dodge makes. Anyway, I'm sure it'll last for about 30k miles before it starts breaking down, like all other Dodge vehicles.
- RealHyperX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Like my 2004 BMW M5 that has been in the shop twice a month for the last 18 months? Oh and it had under 20k miles on it.
- cJw314, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3"*172-hp four-cylinder* engine driving the rear wheels. It's a *hot little number*"
LOL.
I hope they don't build it; the last thing we need in this world is another way to promote 'evil' as being 'cool'. -.-- 3ntropy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1diggs threaded comments are messed up for some reason when I click reply on some posts it puts comments in completely different areas
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Can it go round corners though?

yeah def a rip...the lines are a lil different, but if anyone saw it glacing, they would think s2k- antgoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1That's exactly what I was thinking... it looks like a Photoshop of an S2K and a Dodge Ram.
- turbopro, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I think I'll stick with my saturn sky. That thing looks like it's been beat with an ugly stick. It's trying to hard to be a midget viper.
- DigiRaven, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I like it. Cool design. Daimler has done wonders to dodge since their first cars started rolling off the line in 2005. So much better design and handling comparing to dodges of yesteryear's
- jcaino, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6except for the grill opening, the car from the back of the doors forward resembles an s2k
i think i'd rather have a turbo sky or solstice
wow...gm. yea, i'll certainly get dugg down for that. - washcapsfan37, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's sad so many concept cars never make it into production, and that we end up with bland homogenized cars that all look the same. I went to the auto show this year and saw a few that I liked. Here's one (Ford Interceptor):
http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ford-interceptor-concept/
Didn't exactly like the brushed aluminum instead of a grill, but the interior is really cool (headrests come down from the ceiling, very retro look with modern flair).- Number23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The Interceptor is EXACTLY the sort of car detriot should be building, instead if imitation Accords and Camrys (Camries?).
- Symph0ny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It looks like a cross between a chrysler 300 and a ford fusion. Neither of those cars are innovative so I really dont see how this one is.
- quakersquares, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0wow, can we say s2000 ripoff?
- DaveClarkOne, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6No like --why did Dodge paste the front end of a Ram truck on it? Geez, their design talent is zilch.
- washcapsfan37, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They did it because, like many other car manufacturers, the front end/grill is their trademark look. It's how you know it's a Dodge.
I'll admit though, it may not be the best look here. I would've gone with a slimmer grill and maybe a cowl induction. - DontSayFanboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dodge used to make some really great cars. To me, the 1970 Dodge Challenger is one of the coolest cars of that period, and to this day I would really love to have one.
But I have to agree that their current design team is lazy. Yes, their trucks are very popular, but that doesn't mean it is because people like that look on cars. People want a roadster that is small and agile. I don't know how this car will perform, but the MX-5 and S2000 are pretty refined styles. Dodge's concept looks tacky in comparison.
- washcapsfan37, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They did it because, like many other car manufacturers, the front end/grill is their trademark look. It's how you know it's a Dodge.
- Number23, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I've driven an S2000, I've own an S2000; that sir is no S2000.
In the Sub 30K roadster market, the MX-5 is the bench mark. This car is heavier with the same HP, so it's hard to imagine it will turn laps with a MX-5 or the turbo Solstice / Sky, for that matter.
A 300hp version is another kettle of fish however, could be fun. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I don't think it looks like the S2000, more like a mini-viper. Blast them all you want, but Dodge has had some hits lately (Charger, Calibre, Nitro) and even their mini-vans are still very popular. As far as the front end goes, that's the look they've put on a lot of their cars lately. The new Stratus for example.
You don't HAVE to like or buy it, but at least they're taking some chances and introducing some interesting concepts. The new Challanger for example is one I'd love to have in my driveway. Would I buy a Demon? Depends on how much head and leg room it has. I'm very tall (6'6") which puts most of the smaller cars out of reach for me.- DontSayFanboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yes, they are taking chances.
They are taking chances by releasing an "MX-5 killer" a full 18 years after Mazda released it.
They are taking chances by making their MX-5 killer bigger and heavier, because that's what people look for in a roadster.
They are taking chances by making their roadster resemble a popular line of pickup trucks, because that is what people want in a roadster. - Symph0ny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Did you just try to _Redeem_ dodge by mentioning the Charger, Calibre and Nitro?
Oh my.
- DontSayFanboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yes, they are taking chances.

if you go close enough you will see how cheap those Dodges are made. - matt0ne, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Unfortunately it stil has that little dodge logo on the front. Now where are the keys to my prizm?
- vmerc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4It looks like a throat lozenge. You know, the honey-lemon flavor ones that taste horrible. Those make me want to gag, and so does this car.
- iet2004, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0It kind of reminds me of King Koopa. Really. I tlooks straight out of Mario Bros.
- nbcivic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Dodge needs to ditch that ugly grill design, or at least change it up a bit. All their cars, even the minivan look the same now.
- UrbanVoyeur, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Why isn't his car electric or at least hybrid? As a small, two seater, it would seem to be a perfect place to innovate with a low carb drivetrain.

- deprived, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3wow. why dodge, why?
why do you take a car that could actually be attractive and stick that front end on it?
with all those angles (and the fact that it's a friggen dodge) i don't think it's going to age well.
i'll stick with my mx-5, thanks. - manoftheisland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2S2000 with a different front lol
- DeFex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just like miata but without balanced good looks or Japanese quality!
- kenbaum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ugly Dodge front end. looks like it belongs on a pick up. Not crazy about the rear fender/trunk area either. Add the fact that it will be too heavy like all American "sports cars" and it should be a real dud to drive as well.
- Mysk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I lol at concept cars.
- JoeyDeacon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Apart from the ugly quad radiator grill that really isn't as ugly as most american cars. It looks almost modern.
- weprin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't like the front "grill"
Come to think of it, I've never liked the front of most dodge vehicles.
Except the Viper. - MaXPL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1honestly that car is not half bad, but since theyre aiming at the Miata audience i dont think they'll get much in terms of sales.
they need to innovate and adapt to the needs of the camry, corolla, accord audiences, and not build mid priced convertibles which few will buy. - popfrogs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, looks like the redneck Dodge lovers have had their morning coffee and are modding anyone to oblivion for dissing this car.

- agarc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Dodge grill is so ugly IMO. It's also a hideous color. The rest of the roadster looks nice though... It's very German looking too.
