- Accolade1, on 03/13/2008, -2/+29GTA IV will be better.
- aidave, on 03/13/2008, -1/+20"Just imagine how much time is necessarily to creat something like this. Sometimes I need few hour for some easy scene to render. They must have render farm for sure :)."
A render farm? Come on. Its mostly a bunch of flat bitmaps. A decent box with high end graphics card can easily render that in real time. Me -> Not as impressed as the blogger.
Still a neat video, but a skybox could have done wonders. - Dorke, on 03/13/2008, -2/+13http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PD4vZRkCKs
direct link - hansolo007, on 03/13/2008, -0/+11This is a great digital blueprint for any video game taking place in NYC.
- davey3598, on 03/13/2008, -1/+11nice. must have taken a while alright.
- capiCrimm, on 03/13/2008, -4/+13but couldn't the terrorists use this as training material? We're in a war here!
- cubbiesx, on 03/13/2008, -1/+10that was more like GTA IX. Can't wait to play that on my xbox 2160.
- inactive, on 03/13/2008, -7/+15no hobos, trash; buried as inaccurate.
- cpiazza, on 03/13/2008, -2/+7wow.... pretty amazing!
- lostarchitect, on 03/13/2008, -0/+5that's great, we don't want you here anyway.
- juraj, on 03/13/2008, -0/+5http://www.screampoint.com/
They claim to have "3d and 5dimensional solutions". Can someone elaborate on that? - crodragn, on 03/13/2008, -0/+53D is obvious... 4D would technically be a 3D model that is changing, kinda like a movie that can be viewed from any point... ya got me on 5D though.
- EvilFerret, on 03/13/2008, -0/+5Erm....I'm not too sure what video you watched. Overall it was a pretty nice job putting all of those buildings in there, but not very detailed. Would probably be something a legacy system could run without much trouble.
- webroker, on 03/13/2008, -2/+6very cool...
- antler, on 03/14/2008, -0/+4If anyone is interested, my PhD research is on building exactly this kind of 4D city model automatically from historical photographs -- there is a small-scale example here:
http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~phlosoft/
but we've made a lot of progress since then, so stay tuned. - Totz83, on 03/13/2008, -0/+4Nice model, could do with a taxi or 2
- Dotcommer, on 03/13/2008, -1/+5that is cool. Too bad its on youtube. The quality is so horrible, you can't appreciate the detail.
- stoanhart, on 03/13/2008, -0/+3I'm impressed by the completeness of the model, not the quality of the graphics. I agree, they are pretty basic by modern standards.
- JJcollection, on 03/13/2008, -0/+3let's make a game out of it!
- lacreme, on 03/13/2008, -0/+3buried as inaccurate, cloverfield tore through the city
- gkskillz, on 03/13/2008, -1/+4From http://www.screampoint.com/v2/prev_site/index.htm
"The objective of screampoint's Digital City model is to allow through collaboration with other Vision Implementation Teams and consultants to create individual design plans that are visionary, flexible, and achievable and to coordinate closely with ongoing and future LMDC urban design efforts."
The focus of the city wasn't to be super realistic close up, but to provide a better context for any designs that screampoint may come up with in the future. - HarbingerZero, on 03/13/2008, -0/+3LIDAR data with extruded boxes and an algorithm to map some of those textures, two day's work if you're devoted and have the hardware, otherwise the data is already out there:

This would have been much cooler 5 years ago. - st3vo, on 03/13/2008, -0/+2Import this into a racing game, and enjoy.
- dodgejon, on 03/13/2008, -2/+4New York City my ass....That's Gotham!
- ProjectGSX, on 03/13/2008, -2/+4Am I in before the "tools for terrorists" debate?
- sesstreets, on 03/13/2008, -0/+2...and nothing of value was gained or lost.
- rezist, on 03/13/2008, -1/+3The model is a few sections of Manhattan, a tiny representation of that borough. NYC is all 5 boroughs.
- lukasmach, on 03/13/2008, -0/+2Does anyone have info about how it was modeled? I'd bet on photogrammetry software like RealViz ImageModeller..
- arcooke, on 03/13/2008, -1/+3Bury/report all linkinn spammers. They get paid for clicks.. check his post history.
- h3lx, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Where are the trees?
- Haidoken, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1wow, thats an excellent job. Google Earth should look into this.
- notmiya, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Looks like they got rid of all the crazies and graffiti...
- kagayaki1, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1Where's the traffic? Those streets are way too calm.
- RedRummy, on 03/13/2008, -3/+4some people just gotta criticize!
- Accolade1, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1Soylent green is people!
- darlyn, on 03/13/2008, -2/+3Dugg. That wasn't that much of an amazing video, but there was definitely a lot of work put into this. Props to the creator.
- ronintetsuro, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1It's too bad this won't be GTA IV. Maybe one day, when every home has a render farm built in.
- saintgasoline, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1How could they leave out the feces on the sidewalk?
- catastrophee, on 03/13/2008, -1/+2Very impressive indeed. If you like this you might want to check out this project to recreate the 1900 world fair in Paris: http://lemog.free.fr/lemog_expo_v2/index.php
- rspeed, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1You never watched Sliders?
- targetX, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1Nope, capiCrimm beat ya to it :-D
- sagat, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1Has the blogger actually played a video game in the last 10 years?
- starrychloe, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1Cool now everyone can create their own I am Legend! BTW they left out the subway entrances, but they did have lampposts.
- Bob042, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1It kind of felt like an uncanny valley of architecture. Looks like the real thing, but then you see that everything is perfectly flat, and slight jaggedy parts.
- ncdave101, on 03/13/2008, -5/+6The surfaces are very flat looking. Not so noticeable at a distance, but it really shows in the street scenes. The creator should have used more detail in the close-up models and taken advantage of bump mapping/parallax mapping to give the surfaces more life.
- Octaman, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1Pretty standard render... try it yourself. Simply download Google SketchUp, plunder the 3D warehouse, add some textures & add a tourguide.
- yuggaz, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1a lot of companies already do that.
- yuggaz, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1I have to agree with you on this.
- Todash19, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1He is still on the radio?
Whoda thunkit?
You have to admit though, this is pretty sweet! -
