Diggnation Logo in water drop
pbase.com — really cool pic of the diggnation logo in a water drop.
- 1235 diggs
- digg it
- danglerman, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13wow, i wonder if that was Photoshop, or an awesome picture setup
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17Not Pshop. You can see the large letters in the background.
- tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -32/+14yeah because the background couldnt be photoshoppd in...
- aleves, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10If you click on water at the top of the page it has many different examples (like dl.tv's logo) and multiple angles - I don't think it is photoshped, but either way it is awesome.
- eklass, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22not only can you see the large letters in the background, but if you analyze it carefully, you can see that they are inverted. IIRC physics correctly, the lens makes the image "flip" and thus the need to intially flip the logo, getting it to display correctly
my guess is the photographer projected the logo (with a projector nonetheless) and used a high-speed camera to snap the shop... that or a great photoshopist - afex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11considering the specs of the camera are given as well as the aperture, etc, combined with the fact that is in his 'photography' section makes me say its most likely legit. take a look at some of the other ones, they're pretty sweet.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Of course the background could be pshopped as well, but highly unlikely given the number of other images he has along the same style.
- student69, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34Wow thanks nfbarrett for posting this. I am Jeffrey Klassen. These are real photos, only spot removal and curves in PS. You can see my setup if you look to the top of the page.
- student69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I just noticed that the link goes to a single image. Be sure to check out my entire water gallery for many more water drops.

If you look at the others you can see how they done it. - Kale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, you're the real life Jeff K!!! j/k
Awesome pictures, man. Do you get money if we order prints? I wouldn't mind having some of these on my wall. - akira117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds like it would be perfect for: http://digg.com/offbeat_news/There_should_be_a_Photo_Section_on_digg!
- bilangew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It is NOT photoshopped (aka: not real). Pics from his "water drop" setup here: http://www.pbase.com/jeffreyk/waterdropsetup
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Well it's obviously touched up on a few of them... Hence the names on some such as:
"DSC_3950_edit.jpg" (notice the _edit part...)
But yeah, those drops must be very tiny, in order to get some of the effects around the drop. (The beginning of the ripple I guess?) - student69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Lol yes I am Jeffrey K, Lol so many questions to awnser. Yes if you buy prints I will get money. Not much this is just a hobbie for me. And the diggnation drops are not for print. Kevin would have to be okay with it and probally apart of that. Umm lots more.. I will post more answers to stuff throughout the day. You can email me at the email on my profile page too. I will answer and questions you might have.
Agreed Nikon FTW, although any camera is a good camera. Its what you do with it that counts, lol :) - markperia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sometimes I wish photoshop wasnt created. Cause doubt appears in every picture we see.
- student69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Hello and Thank you all for your kind comments.
I was reading digg when I saw my site hit front page, so I am trying to answer as many questions as I can for you guys. This will be one such post. Also you can email me at the email that is on my profile page on my site if you want to know somthing.
FAQ:
Q: Are these real.
A: Yes, these are real photos only touched up in photoshop. Basic spot removal (I get alot of dust in frame when I shoot these)and levels layers. Some noise removal and sometimes a slight adjustment of saturation.
Q: How are they made.
A: Basically I have a bowl with a upside down backdrop. I drip water into it while I shoot hundreds of photos. Lol its a bit more precise and timed then that, but it is the basics of it.
Q: Do I make money if you buy prints.
A: Yes, but not much. I really just like knowing that people like my work enough to hang it on their wall. The diggnation and DLTV drops are not avail for print. I would need premission and/or to work somthing out with the respective partys.
Q:Lighting setup
A: Two flashes and some sunlight sometimes. If you look at the setup pics it shows how I have them placed.
Q:Are higher res images avail.
A:Yes there are wallpaper sized images upto 1600x1200. I dont think I will provide any larger then that though.
Q:Continous shutter mode?
A:Nope, I have to wait for my flashes to recycle. I just wait till I see the drop about to fall then fire the shutter via IR remote.

As a joke you could have inserted a cheap disposable camera at the front of the setup. That would have raised some questions!
- rodon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34It looks nice and all, but it probably would be more appropriate if it was in a drop of beer.
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1...drop of beer"
I'll second that! - student69, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I like that, might have to try it.
- vx69, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2But what a waste that would be.
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1...drop of beer"
- brendanc, on 10/12/2007, -27/+10Its cool but, front page?
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Because it's an amazing piece of photography - the logo is just the icing on the cake. And everyone loves icing.
That's why. - D14BL0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5It's only on the front page because enough people liked it. Learn how Digg works, and you will no longer need to complain about how stuff gets onto the front page.
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I thought this was great, because there was a how to in it. But there are always a few articles that are "cool pics" and "cool videos" and dupes that somehow sneak onto the front page on occasion. The digg system breaks if little kiddies digg everything they think is "uber"
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Because it's an amazing piece of photography - the logo is just the icing on the cake. And everyone loves icing.
- anchorman, on 10/12/2007, -18/+1edited... repeat
- SentOne, on 10/12/2007, -16/+1nm...
- melek, on 10/12/2007, -28/+4Please, let's front page every neat, practically content devoid photo on the interweb.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7You have enough friends to digg all your stuff in a really fast manner and it ends up on the front page. If it doesn't already, the front page algorithm should note how many of your diggs are coming from friends and not just from interest via browsing. A lot of digging from friends should have a lower value.
- PissedGodzilla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Yay! my new background!
- iamhumble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I saw a mentioned of this on this Tuesday's show of dl.tv. Patrick Norton said they will ask the guy how he did it if it was really down with high speed photography or was it CG. In any case, it is bad ass.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Now CG I could see as more likely than Photoshop. I'd still vote for it being real.
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's real http://www.pbase.com/jeffreyk/waterdropsetup
- InternetUser, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Are you kidding me?
- velocipenguin, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Digital black-and-white photos look like *****.
- zcreem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What would you know, but nice to have your expert oppinion.
As a semi-pro I have many great monochrome pictures taken on DSLRs.
- zcreem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What would you know, but nice to have your expert oppinion.
- justice7, on 10/12/2007, -35/+1seriously are you guys not aware that there are more graphic applications out there than photoshop?
This is obviously done in a 3D app and rendered. And because of that, it is far less impressive.- pacdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19or maybe, JUST MAYBE, you're a douche. http://www.pbase.com/jeffreyk/waterdropsetup
Why is no one allowed to be masterful at photography anymore? Something that looks cool HAS to be Photoshopped or HAS to be CGI even though the proof that it's not is right on the website. - nicksjunk123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4right on, this guy is a damn good photographer
- justice7, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1wow namecalling. Welcome to grade nine?
I didn't spend a lot of time reading the site, and i'm modded down simply because i gave a different angle on how this could be done? - SAOSiN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No your just to ignorant to appreciate art.
- foobar5892, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1@pacdude:
The fact that the guy actually used REAL photography to create such a fake-looking image would suggest the man is a douche himself. Also, great skill isn't really needed either. Snell's law and a few hundred frames per second will eventually get you the image you want. - skoobisnaxs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1no, seriously. It is just because you are a douche. Read it first before you decide to "matter of factly" state wrong information.
- Ironman11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@ foobar
Few hundred FPS? Let me know what camera you're shooting with. The camera this pic was shot with (D70s) shoots at 3 frames per second. It took some serious skill to make this setup, and I'm sure a lot of trial and error to get the perfect shot. - foobar5892, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ironman11:
If skill was used to create that picture, then the author of it is a moron. While his skill is undeniable, the result can be easily replicated in a 3D package in about 5 minutes. However, if the point is to schowcase skill and not the brilliance of the final image, then the photographer has failed as well. There is little indication of how it was done on the original page.
- pacdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19or maybe, JUST MAYBE, you're a douche. http://www.pbase.com/jeffreyk/waterdropsetup
- salweem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Yeah it must be real, look at his setup.
http://www.pbase.com/jeffreyk/waterdropsetup - nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -14/+0Pretty easy to do in any 3D graphics package - would take perhaps an hour to model, and a few hours to render.
- inajeep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13and 1/1250 of a second to do for real.
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@nepawoods
or it could be real, here's how to

- MiamiGuy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Very nice looking whether it is fake or not.
- freshyill, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Extra extra! Digg users are totally in love with themselves! God, and I thought I was bad as a Mac user.
- KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3he did the same for dl.tv, kind of cool
- CoolDude330, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wallpaper'd!
- SAOSiN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2HOME ROWED
I know it's off topic but i just had the urge to say that.
- SAOSiN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2HOME ROWED
- JoshuaWood, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'm not sure why you guys think it's shopped or cg, he has a whole range of pictures on the setup used to create the pictures. Here it is. http://www.pbase.com/jeffreyk/waterdropsetup
- nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Seems like a lot of trouble to go through for something that could be modelled and rendered on a desktop.
- choice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not to mention the fact that the photographer himself posted in this forum, gave his appreciation for the love, and explained that, Yes, in fact they are real.

Wow thanks nfbarrett for posting this. I am Jeffrey Klassen. These are real photos, only spot removal and curves in PS. You can see my setup if you look to the top of the page. - D14BL0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@nepawoods
Yes, because generating it on a computer is MUCH prettier than taking a shot of the real thing, right? - student69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@nepawoods - But is so much more fun, and every single drop is different.
- pcrobot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Sweet wallpaper!
- Neilyos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Nikon FTW.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hardcore. I highly recommend checking out the rest of the gallery and his set-up.
- D14BL0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To everybody who thinks it's Photoshopped:
Look in the background. You can see the text used to create the image through the water drop. Also note how the text is upside-down. If you'd like to educate yourself a bit on how water reflects light, you'd see how it's actually more work to Photoshop this than it is to take the picture the way it is.
Awesome pic, though. I think he should try it with the original image being fish-eyed, to create a more proportional image inside the water drop. - anchorman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3More pics here.
http://www.pbase.com/jeffreyk/water - Falldog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Look at his site, it’s all basic photography. He’s not about to create something in CG when it’s easier and cleaner looking via photography. Not to mention for a photographer, getting a good shot like that is a great pleasure.
Besides, I’m sure he doesn’t care whether it’s shopped, fake, or whatnot. Him and everyone else with a shred of intelligence knows what’s up, and anyone else is totally unimportant.
/beats dead horse - zcreem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1God this is so nice, well done man I am impressed. Of course there bloody real. I do 3d modeling and setting up the caustics, globals, refraction for this would take a bloody genius, hard enough to get right with a camera.
How did you trigger the shutter, or was it a continuous shoot and luck.
Anyway kudos for some really nice work.- Falldog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The D70 can take continuous photos (not sure the exact rate, I know my D50 can take two and a half per second) so I assume the easiest way would be to trigger it (with a mechanical release which the D70 can use), drop a drop, then select the frame that looks the best.
Photography is all trial and error, so I’m sure for each these shots there were a bunch that didn’t look as good.
I wish I could afford a lens like that.

- NiX0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's Awesome. That's almost worth me breaking my policy against digging digg related links.
- k3n85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1can we get these in decent resolutions ? 1680 x 1050 ??
- student69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is 1600x1200 if you download the wallpaper pack.
- tek69, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1in all fairness, it's extremely hard to prove an image is real on the net. I think it's real but not because of the image in the background or the setup, or anything else. All that stuff can be faked. People should question things like this, maybe he wasn't gonna say it was fake till someone asked. Now that it was asked, he told us. If he's lying he's a bastard, but I don't think that's the case. Great pics.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why does it matter if "their not real"? Seriously, it's a cool looking image, regardless of wether it was done real (Which I am almost certain it is.. Look at all the other ones), even if it is CG, or Photoshoped, it's still cool, and thats all that matters.. The image isn't "proving" anything, so theres nothing to fake...
Besides, I think the photos of the setup he used to take the images is proof enough..
- Ben - tek69, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0isn't that what I just said?

- doopa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0swarm
- Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Pretty cool. I don't doubt at all that it's real, but stuff like this is very easy in any decent 3D package.
- benb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well executed idea that makes for a cool photo.
I can't believe so many are thinking this is fake. These types of shots are not that hard. Anyone with decent skill, a good camera, lens and tripod can take these types of shots. An external flash (as he has) helps a lot as well. The hardest part is the timing. I've tried the same thing and only one or two images out of 50 comes out how I like it.
Do a search on flickr (or the like) for water drop and you will see tons of similar shots. Heck, I've got a few myself there: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bbailey/sets/1824105/. All that was done in PS was levels adjustment and some sharpening. - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1not difficult to do in photoshop
- Darkkish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1http://www.students.tut.fi/~gordejev/page5.html
now you're going to say "ZOMG ROFFLE THAT LOOK FAK" so what, with more time, you could use better colors, and build in better effects.
you can do more than people realize with photoshop:

I think there is a very good chance that it is faked, just because it is easier that way.- student69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lol, I assure you they are not :)
- Darkkish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://www.flcd.net/photo/misc/water-drop.jpg sorry didn't have enough time to edit my last post, here is an example of a photo of the same thing, its not as perfect as the diggnation, I'm not saying its not a good logo, infact I LOVE IT its awesome, I'm only saying there is a good and easy chance it could have been faked.
Although they weren't, it showes camera information at the bottom, and i don't see why people would lie about that
- brhad56, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I like this one better.
http://www.pbase.com/jeffreyk/image/63836278 - student69, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Is it just me or can you no longer find this story in the on the Digg site unless you know the exact url? I cant find it via search or in the top storys or anywhere. I was tryint to show a friend on my laptop and couldnt find it. I had to go into my profile. Its strange because it happend before too.
- tomkin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You guys are absolutely lost in mentality. Seriously. Did you just digg an image of the 'diggnation' logo? As if you're all part of some elite organization that not only deserves a logo, but a logo that was cheaply embraced into an existing image that I've seen used countless times. Go ahead digg me down, it just goes to further proves my point.
It's too bad you guys can't just appreciate this site (Digg), you have to ruin it and clog up it's index with stupid fanboy bs. Good job. You sorta raped the site of it's purpose. Thumbs up to you.- inteppa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Hey, it's not polite to point out to digg users that all this site really is, is a list of links that people comment on. Until the Playstation 3 is out, all the fanboys are going to flock here and spew digg-fanboy spunk all over the place. And I'm one of them. I have the digg.com logo as my desktop wallpaper and I'm probably going to masturbate to it later -- after I finish eating these sausages!
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gosh, I don't know how many times people posted the same links and said the same observant comments about these amazing shots. People, please read the thread before posting a link or saying something that might have been said before like:
"These are real!! Check out his setup." - MrThi3f, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2It's a photoshop and so are all those pictures of the set up. I know it!
- codizzle01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0check out this link. he shows how he did it.
