- student69, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34Wow thanks nfbarrett for posting this. I am Jeffrey Klassen. These are real photos, only spot removal and curves in PS. You can see my setup if you look to the top of the page.
- rodon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34It looks nice and all, but it probably would be more appropriate if it was in a drop of beer.
- eklass, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22not only can you see the large letters in the background, but if you analyze it carefully, you can see that they are inverted. IIRC physics correctly, the lens makes the image "flip" and thus the need to intially flip the logo, getting it to display correctly
my guess is the photographer projected the logo (with a projector nonetheless) and used a high-speed camera to snap the shop... that or a great photoshopist - pacdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19or maybe, JUST MAYBE, you're a douche. http://www.pbase.com/jeffreyk/waterdropsetup
Why is no one allowed to be masterful at photography anymore? Something that looks cool HAS to be Photoshopped or HAS to be CGI even though the proof that it's not is right on the website. - student69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I just noticed that the link goes to a single image. Be sure to check out my entire water gallery for many more water drops.
http://www.pbase.com/jeffreyk/water - inajeep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13and 1/1250 of a second to do for real.
- afex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11considering the specs of the camera are given as well as the aperture, etc, combined with the fact that is in his 'photography' section makes me say its most likely legit. take a look at some of the other ones, they're pretty sweet.
- aleves, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10If you click on water at the top of the page it has many different examples (like dl.tv's logo) and multiple angles - I don't think it is photoshped, but either way it is awesome.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17Not Pshop. You can see the large letters in the background.
- salweem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Yeah it must be real, look at his setup.
http://www.pbase.com/jeffreyk/waterdropsetup - student69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Hello and Thank you all for your kind comments.
I was reading digg when I saw my site hit front page, so I am trying to answer as many questions as I can for you guys. This will be one such post. Also you can email me at the email that is on my profile page on my site if you want to know somthing.
FAQ:
Q: Are these real.
A: Yes, these are real photos only touched up in photoshop. Basic spot removal (I get alot of dust in frame when I shoot these)and levels layers. Some noise removal and sometimes a slight adjustment of saturation.
Q: How are they made.
A: Basically I have a bowl with a upside down backdrop. I drip water into it while I shoot hundreds of photos. Lol its a bit more precise and timed then that, but it is the basics of it.
Q: Do I make money if you buy prints.
A: Yes, but not much. I really just like knowing that people like my work enough to hang it on their wall. The diggnation and DLTV drops are not avail for print. I would need premission and/or to work somthing out with the respective partys.
Q:Lighting setup
A: Two flashes and some sunlight sometimes. If you look at the setup pics it shows how I have them placed.
Q:Are higher res images avail.
A:Yes there are wallpaper sized images upto 1600x1200. I dont think I will provide any larger then that though.
Q:Continous shutter mode?
A:Nope, I have to wait for my flashes to recycle. I just wait till I see the drop about to fall then fire the shutter via IR remote.

The setup: http://www.pbase.com/jeffreyk/waterdropsetup - Neilyos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Nikon FTW.
- freshyill, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Extra extra! Digg users are totally in love with themselves! God, and I thought I was bad as a Mac user.
- benb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well executed idea that makes for a cool photo.
I can't believe so many are thinking this is fake. These types of shots are not that hard. Anyone with decent skill, a good camera, lens and tripod can take these types of shots. An external flash (as he has) helps a lot as well. The hardest part is the timing. I've tried the same thing and only one or two images out of 50 comes out how I like it.
Do a search on flickr (or the like) for water drop and you will see tons of similar shots. Heck, I've got a few myself there: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bbailey/sets/1824105/. All that was done in PS was levels adjustment and some sharpening. - bilangew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It is NOT photoshopped (aka: not real). Pics from his "water drop" setup here: http://www.pbase.com/jeffreyk/waterdropsetup
- danglerman, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13wow, i wonder if that was Photoshop, or an awesome picture setup
- nicksjunk123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4right on, this guy is a damn good photographer
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Because it's an amazing piece of photography - the logo is just the icing on the cake. And everyone loves icing.
That's why. - SAOSiN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No your just to ignorant to appreciate art.
- brhad56, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I like this one better.
http://www.pbase.com/jeffreyk/image/63836278 - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hardcore. I highly recommend checking out the rest of the gallery and his set-up.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Now CG I could see as more likely than Photoshop. I'd still vote for it being real.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Of course the background could be pshopped as well, but highly unlikely given the number of other images he has along the same style.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7You have enough friends to digg all your stuff in a really fast manner and it ends up on the front page. If it doesn't already, the front page algorithm should note how many of your diggs are coming from friends and not just from interest via browsing. A lot of digging from friends should have a lower value.
- KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3he did the same for dl.tv, kind of cool
- CoolDude330, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wallpaper'd!
- choice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not to mention the fact that the photographer himself posted in this forum, gave his appreciation for the love, and explained that, Yes, in fact they are real.

Wow thanks nfbarrett for posting this. I am Jeffrey Klassen. These are real photos, only spot removal and curves in PS. You can see my setup if you look to the top of the page. - student69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Lol yes I am Jeffrey K, Lol so many questions to awnser. Yes if you buy prints I will get money. Not much this is just a hobbie for me. And the diggnation drops are not for print. Kevin would have to be okay with it and probally apart of that. Umm lots more.. I will post more answers to stuff throughout the day. You can email me at the email on my profile page too. I will answer and questions you might have.
Agreed Nikon FTW, although any camera is a good camera. Its what you do with it that counts, lol :) - student69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@nepawoods - But is so much more fun, and every single drop is different.
- iamhumble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I saw a mentioned of this on this Tuesday's show of dl.tv. Patrick Norton said they will ask the guy how he did it if it was really down with high speed photography or was it CG. In any case, it is bad ass.
- shosterman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Someone enjoys The Matrix...haha
As a joke you could have inserted a cheap disposable camera at the front of the setup. That would have raised some questions! - Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I thought this was great, because there was a how to in it. But there are always a few articles that are "cool pics" and "cool videos" and dupes that somehow sneak onto the front page on occasion. The digg system breaks if little kiddies digg everything they think is "uber"
- student69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lol, I assure you they are not :)
- Ironman11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@ foobar
Few hundred FPS? Let me know what camera you're shooting with. The camera this pic was shot with (D70s) shoots at 3 frames per second. It took some serious skill to make this setup, and I'm sure a lot of trial and error to get the perfect shot. - markperia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sometimes I wish photoshop wasnt created. Cause doubt appears in every picture we see.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@nepawoods
Yes, because generating it on a computer is MUCH prettier than taking a shot of the real thing, right? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5It's only on the front page because enough people liked it. Learn how Digg works, and you will no longer need to complain about how stuff gets onto the front page.
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gosh, I don't know how many times people posted the same links and said the same observant comments about these amazing shots. People, please read the thread before posting a link or saying something that might have been said before like:
"These are real!! Check out his setup." - SAOSiN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2HOME ROWED
I know it's off topic but i just had the urge to say that. - Kale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, you're the real life Jeff K!!! j/k
Awesome pictures, man. Do you get money if we order prints? I wouldn't mind having some of these on my wall. - inteppa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Hey, it's not polite to point out to digg users that all this site really is, is a list of links that people comment on. Until the Playstation 3 is out, all the fanboys are going to flock here and spew digg-fanboy spunk all over the place. And I'm one of them. I have the digg.com logo as my desktop wallpaper and I'm probably going to masturbate to it later -- after I finish eating these sausages!
- zcreem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What would you know, but nice to have your expert oppinion.
As a semi-pro I have many great monochrome pictures taken on DSLRs. - Falldog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The D70 can take continuous photos (not sure the exact rate, I know my D50 can take two and a half per second) so I assume the easiest way would be to trigger it (with a mechanical release which the D70 can use), drop a drop, then select the frame that looks the best.
Photography is all trial and error, so I’m sure for each these shots there were a bunch that didn’t look as good.
I wish I could afford a lens like that. - student69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is 1600x1200 if you download the wallpaper pack.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why does it matter if "their not real"? Seriously, it's a cool looking image, regardless of wether it was done real (Which I am almost certain it is.. Look at all the other ones), even if it is CG, or Photoshoped, it's still cool, and thats all that matters.. The image isn't "proving" anything, so theres nothing to fake...
Besides, I think the photos of the setup he used to take the images is proof enough..
- Ben - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ironman11:
If skill was used to create that picture, then the author of it is a moron. While his skill is undeniable, the result can be easily replicated in a 3D package in about 5 minutes. However, if the point is to schowcase skill and not the brilliance of the final image, then the photographer has failed as well. There is little indication of how it was done on the original page. - NiX0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's Awesome. That's almost worth me breaking my policy against digging digg related links.
- MiamiGuy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Very nice looking whether it is fake or not.
- k3n85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1can we get these in decent resolutions ? 1680 x 1050 ??
- tomkin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You guys are absolutely lost in mentality. Seriously. Did you just digg an image of the 'diggnation' logo? As if you're all part of some elite organization that not only deserves a logo, but a logo that was cheaply embraced into an existing image that I've seen used countless times. Go ahead digg me down, it just goes to further proves my point.
It's too bad you guys can't just appreciate this site (Digg), you have to ruin it and clog up it's index with stupid fanboy bs. Good job. You sorta raped the site of it's purpose. Thumbs up to you. -
