- anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+48A better way to get a book section rather than "Digg this story", would be to spend your time actually citing all of the most popular book-related stories that have been on Digg. If you find that there's a lot and that there's a huge demand, then you'll be listened to. If, however, you find that there's very few book-related stories, you have your answer as to why there isn't a book category on Digg.
- jsg7, on 10/12/2007, -5/+47Let's just have a "Print" ("hardcopy"?) sub-section. It could cover book, magazines, comics, coffee table books about coffee tables that are actually tiny coffee tables themselves... anything about anything in print...
- oskite, on 10/12/2007, -11/+51Not just a Books subsection - the whole thing needs a revamp. I mean, where's the Arts section? Music, drawing, Photoshop anyone?
- JONU, on 10/12/2007, -8/+35Never judge a book by its movie!
- TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21I kinda liked it better when Digg was more technology based and didn't have a category to post everything from Harry Potter to Salma Hayek's boobs. Right now there is exactly one technology oriented article on the first page of Digg, and it's a compiled list of Leopard Features. However we do have links like "Gas station pwns Sony" and "Oh dear lord, bees. Mankind vs. beekind-the final showdown"
I know I can customize my Digg, but on the other hand I don't want to miss a good story. - livestradamus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19For a second there I thought it said Boobs section :X
Must be the effects of seeing the Selma Hayek story :) - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Digg does need a books section, as long as that section includes comic books
- MarkCiccone, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Graphic novels, comic books, new books... tech books even? I could search for them but I don't have a blog or anything with which to put them on. I think there is need enough for it.
- Guard, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18Never judge a movie by its book?
- JonnyTrombone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11A librarian once told me that you -can- judge a book by its cover. The quality of the cover is many times a good indicator as to how much work went into the book overall. (There is a reason all those teenie-trash books look like crap)
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14How about a Salma Hayek's boobs section?
- MistaMatt90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9a photos section would be nice though...
- TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9There's nothing wrong with Salma's boobs. She has great boobs, however for celebrity gossip and Salma Hayek's boobs I visit other sites. It's not what I come to Digg for.
To quote a comment from the Salma Hayek thread. "my pp is starting to tingle". Not an attack on that user, and i know it was probably a joke, but by bringing Digg to a wider base, we're also diluting it, with less intelligent topics, comments, and users.
It's a classic downfall. Go to big, try to please too many people, and ruin what you had. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6excellent point anagoge .... brilliant. I can't think of many off the top of my head... so i don't think it's worth it.
a photoshop section is VERY needed.... and maybe even one for web design? - lemorex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why not have a digg improvement section, where others could digg your suggestion to make digg better?
- dvasj2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5***** YEAH!
There needs to be a "recommendations" sub section - shirosamurai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Took the words right out of my damn mouth.
- Szat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4How sad is the world today where we have people "putting down" books, if you will. Books have brought us knowledge of the past, present, and some what into the future. They tell real events, characteristics, and people or completely made up events, characteristics, and people. Fact or fiction, it doesn't matter what kind of books you like to read, as long as you read. Books expand our knowledge and imagination. I lose respect for people when they say "I hate reading" or "Books are stupid". Hey guess what genius, you're stupid! Go out there and acquire some well needed knowledge.
- appleswitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"I could search for them but I don't have a blog or anything with which to put them on."
http://www.blogger.com/start
Start searching. - Vironex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Maybe Digg just needs an "Other" section so people can stop submitting stories in the wrong categories. I understand the frustration behind not knowing which category to place a story into, but in the description of the link isn't the right place to petition. You've combined two different submissions.
- Ramtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Having an "Other" section could be very messy.. especially when your looking for something...
- jsg7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"We don't need a books section. Entertainment covers it just fine"
Which is exactly why there are no Movie or Television subsections, right?
What?
Oh... - smith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I digg this because I would like to see a Books section and not because I'm buying into Mark Ciccone's filthy way of using digg to advertise the next Harry Potter book.
- NidStyles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'd be the first to say that I would contribute more. I read on the average of around 40 comics a week. No I'm not a child, I can actually afford them now, and old habits die hard, if ever...
- frouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A book could come under the Entertainment section. But here is a thought - if there is no category for what you want to submit, don't submit it! :)
- Ramtech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Search for "book" on Digg and it comes up with 41 pages of results... but search for "books" on Digg and you get about 11 pages... not really a big demand for it.. IMO..
- nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2but this post has nothing to do with Harry Potter. the link was just used because a link is required to post something - here it has nothing to do with the intent of posting
- koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I completely agree with TheWorm. Please cut down the number of categories we're flooded with.
Digg was coolest when it focused on one niche: geeks. Tech/Apple/Gaming/Design/etc. - nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Digg this story if you want a 'Books' section under Entertainment on Digg!!"
And if more people digg it than don't digg it, let it be done. - nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Digg this story if you want ..."
So what's the score now? By my reckoning, damn near the entire planet hasn't dugg it. - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that would make it nsfw
and most of digg is IT right?
realy kill the advertisements - digitally5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is entertainment
- sicc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're welcome for that submission btw.
To be honest, I never thought it would make front page, I figured digg wouldn't allow such a non-content type link to ever make it. But look what happen!
:P - Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3We also need a Recipe section, I mean we already have Ctrl Alt Chicken but we should be able to have more, there was a cookie recipe on the front page earlier today it had to be posted in offbeat news.
- EricCiccone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like to think of this as a motion to add more subcategories to Digg, I agree that there shouldn't be a lot added, that would make digg more messy, however a section for something like Books, I believe is much needed.
- nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why not have a generic discussion section, like a message board, where people can post something without submitting a link? (instead of having to post something titled "Digg this story if you want a 'Books' section under Entertainment on Digg!!" that links unrelatedly to a Harry Potter book on Amazon)
- Anvilman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Buried because this is SPAM... note the refferal tag in there?
- AntoineDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Books should be here yes, and anything related to art actually.
Keep on the good job digg ppl (and don't forget to listen to us:) - DiggingItt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I would love to see books reviews by digg fans. This definitely needs to be added!
- MetalUnderShock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they were these things that the Nazi's burned made of paper and inks, so to protect ourselves from this happening again, we now have something called ebooks, and the world-wide-web to store our stories so the Nazi's can't do it again.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+140 comics a week? Dear god, do you buy absolutely everything that comes out? The most I've gotten in one week is like 5.
- kcpwnsgman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1we also need a photography section
- djAnakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The reposting thing is just running rampant on digg. A "Harry Potter" search yields 4 pages, and just the first page has 10 returns for the title of the 7th book. People really need to pay attention when it asks you if it's a repost.
- mastersquirrel3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Not just a Books subsection - the whole thing needs a revamp. I mean, where's the Arts section? Music, drawing, Photoshop anyone?"
You can lump that all into a fine art section and add a picture as a sub section. I would also like to see that and a forums section so you cad talk about off topic things like this. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I never knew how many Photoshop pros there were here? oh wait, maybe because there aren't any (maybe 1% of the people who use Ps are). Go to www.good-tutorials.com noobs, that is just what you're going to submit to digg anyway.
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The Road"..?
Sound like a book version of a chick-flick (is there a word for that?)
Are you a woman?
If no, maybe you don't wanna brag about that
If yes, will you go out with me? - PureHeretic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1a books section sounds great!
shun @ slashdot - BigKitty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@anagoge,
Not necessarily, because people might have refrained from submitting book-related articles entirely if they felt that no category is even remotely appropriate. - Karp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd rather see a photography section, please.
- EricCiccone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That works just as well
