- AKBryant54, on 10/10/2007, -13/+529I don't ***** understand it, why don't they just change it to the podcast comment system, it's exactly what everyone wants.
- masterkenobi, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3681- Carraige returns disappear in comment replies.
2- It's impossible to find old comments you have made if it's buried in the comment tree. - canewediggit, on 10/10/2007, -4/+346ok, i was going to come here and bitch about you guys bitching about the new system after everyone spent so much time bitching about the old system. then i went to the podcast section. yeah, count me in, that needs to be implemented site wide.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -12/+239Just to add,, NO ONE WANTS TO SEE THE TROLLS THEY HAVE BLOCKED, plz do something about this.
- tomboy501, on 10/10/2007, -4/+196The main thing I don't like is that some of the best snarky replies to buried comments get buried too, no matter how much they are dugg up...and that's a shame.
..and I still think the lines and reply boxes clutter up the site.
I don't dislike the new comments as much as I used to back when it first changed. I know there have been some small improvements since then...but, I mostly think I have just gotten used to it. I also agree with AKBryant's comment above. Podcast section comment style is the way to go - jsully, on 10/10/2007, -4/+194My favorite part is how it locks up Firefox for a several seconds while it loads the page on my dual core Athlon 3800X2 with 2Gigs of RAM. Anybody else experience this? It's truly infuriating.
- consoneo, on 10/10/2007, -6/+173I have my comments preferences set up to show every single comment on the page, so it is all nested and it isn't too bad. The only problem I have is the script locks up Firefox way WAY too often causing that "Do you want to stop running this script?" dialog to come up.
It's actually a good system, it's just WAY too slow.
The Podcasts section is exactly how my comment trees look, except they have little headlines that you can minimize the stories, and reply buttons in each section that opens up a box right below them to reply.
If they could speed it up, it'd be great for me. Really, go into your profile, then the Profile tab, then the "Manage Profile" section, and at the bottom there's a "Viewing Preferences" section... I have mine set as the following
Set Default Comment View: sort by date (show all)
Set Comment Threading View: Show all threads
Open Links to External Pages: Always open in a new window (not necessary but I just put it in for reference)
You will see it is like the podcast section, but with a lot more borders and visible tables.
Not too bad, just slow!
Another snag I keep getting when I am replying to people (this was supposed to be to Dokument) is that it says "Your session has expired, please refresh the page before commenting" I think it's a bug... it might be something like the following .. "Reply threshold reached, can not make any more sub-threads"
Meh, oh well... - Spytap, on 10/10/2007, -7/+135Dude, x2. Though I like the old system best, the podcast section is leaps and bounds better than this one.
- Dokument, on 10/10/2007, -11/+120oh my god why do i have to keep clicking show to get to comments like this one!
ahh (cuts wrists) - meatmcguffin, on 11/12/2007, -5/+92The biggest sign of a broken comment system is if you can triple post
- meatmcguffin, on 11/12/2007, -6/+93The biggest sign of a broken comment system is if you can triple post
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -6/+93The biggest sign of a broken comment system is if you can triple post and ZOMG guess what Digg lets you do :/
- mighty_mouth, on 10/10/2007, -3/+88I think the podcast section is even better than the old system.
- bagelpirate, on 10/10/2007, -3/+82Didn't they say they were changing the system after we first said we didn't like it?
Also - how about a digg "bookmark" manager type deal, so I can organize all my diggs, like CSS Tutorials and Pictures of cats?
And WTF is with the seemingly random line breaks in the comments, I hit enter once and it creates 3 lines. - anaesthetica, on 10/10/2007, -4/+77Right on. No need to write up something new, or to patch the existing comment system. Just take the code already written for the podcast comments and move it over here.
- zwaldowski, on 10/10/2007, -3/+73Oh dear god, I didn't know Podcasts had a different system. I just checked it... and angels flew into my room.
- najdorf, on 10/10/2007, -1/+70I'd like to see how many diggs my comments have from my profile (and any replies).
- Bdog2g2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+70not to mention it makes Firefox have a seizure.
- cojerk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+68You forgot:
3- Double postings (see SweetMercury's mishap) ^^^ - synik, on 10/10/2007, -2/+63Because Kevin and his crew can't accept that their new comment system, which they no doubt spent lots of time on, is horrible.
- elvenseven, on 10/10/2007, -5/+64Dear Kevin Rose,
Actually I don't mind the new commenting system's design, nor the fact that it's 30% slower than the last system but the problem is its damn BUGGY.
After a certain amount of comments in the story it goes bezerk.
- Sometimes I can't see my comments.
- I can't see other peoples reply to my comments.
- If you extend the page (Show more comments function below) you could see the other peoples replies to a comment somehow all placed down there.
- Digg slows down/crashes Firefox/IE/Opera on my Intel Centrino laptop. Do I really have to use the Dual Core CPU to browse Digg now? My suggestion: Get rid of these fancy ajax effects and stick to simple show/hide replys (divs) like Reddit.
I would appreciate if you could reply in person :D - jj9000, on 10/10/2007, -5/+58It would be great if my session stopped timing out after 2 minutes, too.
- Verdanic, on 10/10/2007, -6/+54What the *****? That comment system is literally perfect. Why the ***** hasn't it been applied everywhere? Before I figured maybe something amazing was in development or there were problems we weren't aware of, but now I'm just ***** confused.
- mighty_mouth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+48The podcast section's system meets the needs of all humankind.
1. You can reply to replies.
2. It's as fast as the old system. - archlich, on 10/10/2007, -1/+484. Comments past 50 cannot be replied to.
5. Cannot read comments after they have been dugg down.
6. Cannot read some replies randomly.
7. Cannot reply randomly. - tradwolley, on 10/10/2007, -6/+52Ah crap, where did that reply button come from, and where did the one I wanted go.
- commonsence21, on 10/10/2007, -4/+48The thing is, they would need to make some tweaks to the podcast comments as well.
Case in point:
http://digg.com/podcasts/Diggnation/499486 - hardD, on 10/10/2007, -2/+44it is broken
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+41Sorry, they are working on Pownce, outsourcing new Digg Labs features to SilverOrange and too busy reading spammy stories with [PICS] on diggnation
- GliTCH82, on 10/10/2007, -1/+37Congratulations! This is the first (and probably last) time your message will ever intentionally be Dugg up three times in a row. NEW HIGH SCORE!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+36It's impossible to find your own comments! These geniuses don't understand how or why people use Digg's comment system.
They managed to ***** up the *one* compelling feature of Digg's comment system, which is the immediate feedback you get on your comments, either through diggs or through replies. At they same time they made everything else slower, uglier, and buggier. - CraigJ, on 10/10/2007, -2/+36The time lag before comments appear is horrible. There are way too many duplicate comments because if it, and you also end up with batches of comments showing up all at once, frequently with a number of posters making the same point..
Why do I have to dig down a user before I can block?
Why do users that I've blocked still show up? (allbeit grayed out) - endlessoul, on 10/10/2007, -2/+35Agreed. Admittedly, I had never visited the Podcasts section before, but now that I've seen how perfect it is for Digg, I want to ask what the hell they're thinking about leaving this stupid "show/hide replies" crap in. Guys, listen carefully. PUT THE PODCAST COMMENT SYSTEM ON THE ENTIRE SITE. Thank you kindly.
- Shadowhawk22, on 10/10/2007, -3/+34I don't want to have to click to expand the comment system. I'd like it to be how it was before everything was changed. Why would I want to click to see a reply? Please just show all comments, minus the ones buried. Thanks.
- zwaldowski, on 10/10/2007, -1/+32@elf: O RLY? I have Foxmarks and AdBlock installed, and Firefox freezes for a moment if I open more than four comment pages.
- radu79, on 10/10/2007, -2/+32The new system is incredibly slow on Opera. I don't know about other browsers, but it takes forever for Opera to load more than, say, 100 comments. The old style was faster, didn't require as many clicks as it does now, and the information flow was better.
- mikev, on 10/10/2007, -2/+32Ever since the new comment system I have been commenting a lot less frequently. It sucks and is totally unusable. The Digg team can do a lot better...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+30> It has been almost 2 months
It feels like an eternity. - czimmerman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29And Safari. Holy crap, man. I beach ball every time I go to a page with a lot of comments.
- GliTCH82, on 10/10/2007, -1/+28I think they were just giving it time to see if we would get used to it. Too bad you can't get used to something that completely sucks balls.
- shinynew, on 10/10/2007, -4/+31no
- shawnz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27This is probably the truth -- looking for ways to make it better is easy, but throwing out your own software is impossible. Fact is, kevin could just as easily keep the new backend and javascript while using the old CSS. (also, get rid of the stupid "click here to show" link -- not only is it annoying, but it never works.)
- cheesypizza, on 07/22/2009, -5/+30The only reason i come to digg anymore is to check if the comment system is fixed yet. :P
- 15charmaxwtf, on 10/10/2007, -4/+29Wow, I was just imagining something like that. It's fast and simple and properly threaded, great! This current one is slow, messy and complicated.
- tazx, on 10/10/2007, -3/+27Reddit >> Digg when it comes to comments.
- renegadeafk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25Holy ***** it's awesome, that would make the comment system much much better if implemented site wide.
- StandardsDT, on 10/10/2007, -4/+28I think the most annoying thing about his comment system personally is that that pretty much all of the reply links no longer appear, making it not possible to reply to some one else's comment at all. Oh and the fact that half of the comments disappear once you log in. Is it just me or is anyone else experiencing these issues?
- ChildeRoland420, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25You buried 1a comment 1and your reply is under it. Digg will not 1autom1atic1ally exp1and comments th1at h1ave been buried.
Sorry 1about broken keybo1ard. - wisam, on 10/10/2007, -3/+26Really thanks. It took almost 14 hours for someone to finally (and thankfully) mention it.
