- actionscripted, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24What bothers me is that Wired couldn't be bothered to replace their double-minus in the title with an em dash ("&mdash").
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22No one's buying your album huh?
- BrokenClock, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Online design contests really piss me off. /rant
- RockMyMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I think the Dead Kennedy's sang about progress once. I think that just might apply here as well.
- theskunkworks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15they should hire this guy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storm_Thorgerson
- ShaneApex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13How about they concentrate on making good music. Any female singer who gets to thier third album turns into a dancing pop princess. And any band that comes out is some pretty boy band with very little skills to which the record company hands them music and says, "Play this or we're dropping you."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12You think like the record industry, movie industry, and game industry. And, unfortunately, that's 1980s thinking. We don't HAVE to go to a store in hopes that what we want to buy is in stock, we can get it through iTunes or Amazon, or whatever else.
The romantic idea of hanging out in a used record store talking with some like minded music fans is a nice one, that's for sure. But it's dying, just like theaters and Clear Channel style Radio.
The Internet is the future, instant gratification. - mortigon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Which is why I love Tool, nothing like them, and I dare someone to try to sound like them...
Their album artwork is also amazing. - dudemanbro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11It's ugly
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Um, there is good music being released all the time, you just have to dig deeper than the NEW RELEASE wall at Best Buy.
- eunichs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Tool - 10,000 Days.
- reevolutn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10people seem to forget the quality difference between cds and mp3s. When you listen to a cd its how its meant to sound. mp3s just cant compete with the tonal range you get from a cd
- betobeto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Going from a 12"x12" canvas to a 0.3"x0.3" thumbnail: Not exactly what I'd call progress from a graphic design standpoint.
- ZakColeman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I use iTunes, and love the coverflow, I get every single album art for my music, it's not quite the same without it. The art really says something about the band and what message or idea they are conveying.
- Wolfie351, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6All record companies need to do is add value to the discs and people would choose that over downloads. Release CDs in more of a book form with full lyrics, pictures, band info, etc and sell them in editions. This would add a collector value, people will want the "1st edition" release.
- nlatimer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I don't think I've bought anything but a few Weird Al albums, and some ska band CDs in the past few years.
Its hard to forget Weird Al with poodle as a hat. Still I doubt anyone would consider that high art. Except maybe the French. - whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+4I'd rather they save the fresco instead. Maybe they could do frescoes of album covers...
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@Lyph4
I'm anarcho-communist.
Looks like I'll have to kill you. - Jassman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think King Crimson's "In the Court of the Crimson King" album cover is the greatest of all time:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_the_court_of_the_crimson_king
I find it insane that that cover was Barry Godber's only painting... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"if everyone bought everything online there would be no sales tax to fund you local government. support local business!"
Support your local business, pay more for the product AND pay taxes on it to support your government!
There's 3 reasons that I buy online.
Anarcho-capitalist and damned proud of it. - Sambone67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Roger Dean comes to mind also. The old Yes covers were awesome when you were properly 'elevated'.
- builtby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3some places should stick to computers and gadgets. wired is one of them. some people are highly misinformed about art and music today and this is one prime example. just because you can't see something in main stream music doesn't mean it isn't happening. they need to take a look around once and awhile.
- KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think you spelled "eunuchs" wrong.
- tackle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2True. It even won the Grammy for "Best Recording Package" this year. Well deserved.
- xmuskrat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've spent five years of my life trying to invent an anal bum cover, failing to do so is my greatest regret.
- jkoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And, everyone knows, Weird Al is a genius in France.
- Codee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think Warner is onto something, but they need to start worrying about the crappy deals they give artist first, artwork a close second.
- petsounds01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Is there a Grammy category for "Band Most Likely to Put Out An Album Every Five Years With the Same Choppy Guitar Riff for 74 Minutes Straight?" If so, Tool would totally win.
- neave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Album art may be having a lull but it'll never die. Once electronic music and media players become more sophisticated, it'll make its comeback.
Coverflow, anyone? - DrunkPikachu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Couldn't a band's website be considered a more defining space for a band than the album cover these days?
- jkoke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There IS good music being produced nowadays. It's just not being played on the radio. With a little digging, I found some bands that I had not heard of but that (to my tastes) are producing great music: MUSE, Ray LaMontagne, Pete Yorn, Under the Influence of Giants. It's not all crap. Keep looking.
- scifipirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Independent labels that still press vinyls have awesome album art, look at that new Bright Eyes for Christ sake.
- jkoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They could, but most band's web sites are cluttered crap -- not to mention that their music begins playing automatically in most cases. I hate that. Give me quick, easy to find downloads or streams, but don't take over my computer.
- wvdavis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@ actionscripted – You really should not let the small things get you like that.
- DrawingTheSun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2cd cover illustrations need to be designed for their purpose, just slapping any fancy picture on a cd cover is just stupid
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2aside from selling cds in "editions" good bands do release their albums in this manner.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hell yea
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MephiSKApheles?
- metalhead3767, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That thing they mentioned about the lyrics and album art working together might just be a reason for me to actually buy music.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg for the hilarious SNL reference...
"Trbek!..."
-Sean Conery (Celebrity Jeopardy) - MBX1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1whats the problem? many album covers nowadays come as interactive booklets via itunes. just shift the skills to digital if print is not an option. i do love nice album covers though, but i rarely buy hardcopies anymore (i buy on itunes), only when the band i like comes up with a great cd-cover though.
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@electricfuneral - I think you are late to the party. How presumptuous to think that all this is happening right now, it has been happening. It's been happening since the invention of radio. A band wants to have fun, they need money, they get bigger, they make more money. One day someone manages them, plays them on the radio, and they get sales, music is forgotten, fame is all that matters. Same thing with movie previews - you sacrifice quality for quantity. This is nothing new, but your plight will never be heard because these sellouts are just that - GETTIN' PAID. Money talks, like it or not. The key is not to complain about the music, but rather to people who buy into the BS factory AKA friends and family.
As far as another comment you made: "and they deserve more credit than they get in the mainstream"
^ That's part of the problem! What do you care if someone is mainstream or not? You know if it happened, you would complain that everyone likes "your" band. This is another predictable chain of events and you know I'm right ;) When someone gets credit and that translates to sales, quality is sure to dimish. You know what they say, you can't make all the people happy all the time. To make more money, you need to make everyone happy. Everyone doesn't like the same thing, so that invariably leads to middle-of-the-road ideas/music/art/etc. - ZakColeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, storm thorgerson did some of pink floyds artwork as well as audio slave (not comparing the two AT ALL, besides the point) he is an amazing artist, more bands should have someone like him.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ah the days of album covers, I still enjoy the letters on Led Zeppelins' "Physical Graffiti" that you can slide around.
Album covers to me, is what attracts me to the album, no matter what type of music. If the cover is interesting and
catches my eye, most likely I'm going to pick it up and look to see what it is about. - madpainter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why don't they just insert the CD into the old album sleeve, put on some great art work, and do away with those enviromentally unfriendly, wasteful, hateful plastic things they use to prevent shoplifting.
How any people do you think would actuaslly go out and buy an album, instead of ripping it, just to have the awesome artwork? Me for one.
Might just make the RIAA useless. - quazywabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@acdcfanbill
while that is a good album by emperor it is an older album of theres. but as for album art I am all for it, besides I still have the option of album art in iTunes so its still needed. - builtby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3your joking right? please tell me your joking.
- artemus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great. Maybe when they've done that, they'll focus on rescuing another lost art form- decent rock n' roll.
- acdcfanbill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Album covers arn't dead in metal. Necrolord has done artwork for some of my favorites. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kristian_W%C3%A5hlin
the covers for Wintersun's s/t http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/14/Wintersun.jpg
and Emperor's In The Nightside Eclipse http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/0c/Inthenightsideeclipseemperor.jpg
as well as Ensiferum's covers and many more. It's just mass produced popular crap that have gone the shortcut cheap route. -
