- lukes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can make these with an overhead projector and a lot of patience.
Get a picture printed onto a transparency and then project with an overhead projector. Yhe projector should be placed where it's intended the eye of the viewer will be. With the projector going, trace the line.
There's been a number of times this has been used in art. One, that I can't recall the name of, involved a line of light around a city's civic centre. - plasticmind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, I'm amazed at some of the ignorant comments here. For starters, that's a DOOR. (See the lady in the white dress opening said DOOR with signs on it?) And if you managed to browse through http://www.varini.org you'd have seen the movies that shift perspective and make it clear that these images have been carefully and thoughtfully composed, unlike most of these comments.
- camtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ok, the one that "fudged" linked to is definitely fake. Who's going to let someone paint a giant red stripe across the doorway and building, let alone a city clock (I think that's what it's called.) That was photoshoped, but some of the others were very believable. All you need to make something like that is an overhead projector placed at the right height.
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if the effect would be as strong in person. You would probably have to close one eye as the effect may be disrupted by viewing it in three dimensions.

And if they were to tamper with reality, I'm sure they would have used The Gimp. ;-) - digitalArtform, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a great street artist who uses the "camera projection" principle to make really trippy sidewalk art that from the right perspective seems to rise out of the pavement
http://www.kurtwenner.com/street/ - cwmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This was all done in MS paint.

^^ pretty sure that's not denial of _perspective_ ... just access. :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0as stated earlier, the site is not down. the webhost is blocking access to the page from digg.
- gravestmor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's my page.
my service provider is blocking referrals from digg.com to the page for the time being...
you can still see the post by going here and scrolling down:

and no, none of the above are faked/photoshopped.
to see the artists painting the works go here:
http://www.varini.org/01act/act12.html - green1152, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's really not that hard to do this kind of art if you think about it. Project a design onto something and trace it exactly, including the stratching areas.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well... that's by the same artist... straight from his website
judge that however you like, but i give a big PHOTOSHOP stamp of dissapproval - uglymike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Freaking sweet
- schriste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0looks like photoshop to me too
- Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh yeah.. +digg
- Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0fudged, You're just being stubborn now.
I took five seconds using photoshop to brighten the area in question, http://www.amplitude-x.com/misc/omegawdadoor.jpg
Also while I was at it, I checked to see the shading of red, it varies consistantly with the other colors. - RumaruDrathas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is not post image manipulation done at all. If you guys navigate through the pictures in http://www.varini.org/02indc/indgen.html, you would see the art in the off axis view
Really remarkable. The Artist must have a great deal of patience. I should do something similar, with the suggested projection method - BrandonAbell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sculpture without 3-dimensional elements. Very cool. See also James Turrell:

Uh? Seen from any fixed perspective, these paintings are no more 3D in reality than they are on your screen. - MrPhelps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kewl but what's the point to show 2D photographs of a work whose whole idea is that it is 3D ?
- kylef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg via lavawalker's link
- 0x2a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0umm...trippy. that about sums it up. dugg
- modbox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The last picture, with the big blue X is fake. In the first picture there are blue lines on the white heater against the wall, in the second, there are no lines on the heater... Photoshop.
- SHudson311, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is definitely on the heater, look closely
- Pplus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The last picture, with the big blue X is fake. In the first picture there are blue lines on the white heater against the wall, in the second, there are no lines on the heater... Photoshop."
If you look at it again, you'll notice the big blue line on the heater. It makes the vertical blue line on the right of the box, but way to jump to conclusions and be so sure of yourself. - Bromskloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0modbox writes: "In the first picture there are blue lines on the white heater against the wall, in the second, there are no lines on the heater"
I think you could be wrong here. The rightmost line isn't painted solely on the wall. (Hardly much at all, in fact.) The rest is on the floor, the heater, the wall in the background and the ceiling. - modbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK ok, i was wrong... Obviously didn't look close enough first time..
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's amusing for a second but it is truly ugly stuff.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0here's a link to one of his "video's" (gif) http://www.varini.org/05vid/media/a01.gif
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'm not saying that the images directly linked to this post are photoshopped, but some of his other work just goes TOO far.... just not possible (like the red across the dark doorway)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if you followed links now and then you might see what's in them
- gravestmor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Wenner stuff may be technically accomplished, granted, but harps, togas and wild stallions? Seriously, there is nothing cool about that...
- Skitals, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"THERE IS NO DOOR...... hence doorWAY"
You're an idiot if you don't there there is a door there. There are even little signs on it... and the woman infront of it is HOLDING IT SLIGHTLY OPEN, which is why there is a slight break in the line at the top of the door. The door is just very dark in color, but it getting just as much light as the surrounding area, so it's no where near impossible to achieve this effect. - plasticmind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also, notice that the aformentioned DOOR is being opened, hence the small break in the red line.
- Skitals, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0don't think*
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK... i'm sorry, there does appear to be a door here (http://www.varini.org/05vid/media/c01.gif) but I still don't think there is enough lighting at the top of this archway to get that shade of red
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0forbidden... coral works:

- barium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oops, comma in link: http://www.varini.org/01act/wb01/wa11.jpg
- barium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While this is a pretty cool concept, his "artwork" isn't very sophisticated or interesting, just a bunch of lines, concentric circles, shapes, etc. Plus, in this picture: http://www.varini.org/01act/wb01/wa11.jpg, it looks like he's just projecting shapes onto the walls and overlaying them with paint. I like the sidewalk painter guy in Italy a lot more: http://www.kurtwenner.com/street/
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thats crazy
- kamizu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ barium
the concept is cool and although it would be interesting to see actual photographic art, say an image of a tiger, imagine how ugly that would seem when not in perspective. i assume he went with minimalistic abstract because it won't hurt the eyes when not in perspective. imagine a room full of slashes of dozens of different colours in one room. it would be a garish horror scene.
as for kurt wenner, cool stuff. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sorry guys.. your right.... plus, wenner is freaking wicked

By painting on the door? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good schtuff.
digg();
re: photoshopping. Isn't that what the whole point of this is... to look like it's been photoshopped. ha - l0g1cal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Definitely Dugg, too bad the site is down.
- superdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very cool! dugg
