Declutter your desk - Mount all the extras underneath! (PICS)
kooki.ca — A friend of mine, Van, was tired of having so much crap in his home office. So he decided to mount all the extras (route, external drives, modem, etc.) underneath his desk. Now he just has his laptop, monitors and keyboard/mouse on his desk. The link provides lots of great pictures and simple instructions.

- xotx69, on 10/12/2007, -19/+11I could've used that when I had my big desk years ago!

- katanna, on 10/12/2007, -21/+6Actually, I have the (so called) "wireless desk," a customized desk that if you look below it, there are NO wires hanging below the edge of the desk and/or on the floor! I have (just like the story) used peg board, but I hung it on the back of my desk. Everything is back there: three power strips, three external hard drives, USB hub, router, cable modem, and more (I am sure). Have been thinking about writing a story about it and posting it on Digg, though I haven't yet...
And all of this for an iMac...
Matthew - optimuscrime, on 10/12/2007, -20/+5Sounds great...
James - vmardian, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13My mirror: http://67.18.248.210/van/
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Ouch, watch out for those wire prongs. You'll poke your eye out!
There must be something better than wrapping your devices in wire - CRasH180, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@sych0: You could also use the industrial strength Velcro to secure it to the bottom of the desk and attach the other piece to the device. Or uses two O rings part of the safety hasps and use Velcro straps to secure it underneath for the cables. That way you could either slap the drive onto the Velcro and hook up the cables. Or you use the Velcro straps to secure it to the safety hasps.
- rewen, on 10/12/2007, -8/+83Can anyone say testicular cancer?
- meceredesguy, on 10/12/2007, -20/+6Testicular Cancer
Yeah, last time i checked usb hubs gave off enough radiation for that.
Pshh - rewen, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6Good job, you win!
And I'm sure all that stuff running over top of your crotch for hours a day could actually have some effect, maybe not a huge one but still. But hey if you're not worried in the least, it's survival of the fittest right? Let's see which one of us can still have kids in a few years :D - wjw75, on 10/12/2007, -16/+8It's called a free vasectomy.
- eqrunner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Just use thin zip ties (or wireties) Those little strips of plastic that you put though the eye of it's self and it ratchets tight and doesn't let go.. Plus if you ever need to remove something or replace something, just cut it with wire cutters and do it again. The wire idea may help in getting things set where you want it, then zip tie it all down
You can uses twist ties on the wires incase you ever need to shift stuff around - thecosas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15considering all those devices formerly just sat above his lap, separated from him only by wood/metal, I have a feeling the amount of radiation compared to what it formerly was is not going to make a whole lot of difference.
- Xylem, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Where are his speakers?
- Sep11insidejob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The wire should be twisted on the top of the device. Like on the other side of the board before installing the board under the desk.
- MannaPC, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Wow, hope it doesn't get too hot. Heat is known to decrease sperm =P.
- Nachoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1You need to be concerned with the danger of fire. Wiring all this stuff together so close can become dangerous. Just a side note for people that want to build something like that, too.
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -16/+109Seriously, does anyone keep their power strip on their desk? Most of that stuff just sits on the floor.
- steven401, on 10/12/2007, -26/+3I was thinking the same thing, the only thing I can see he's stuck too his desk is what looks to look like a router which doesn't exactly take up much space anyway.
- vmardian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+66Why would you assume that I had the power bar on the desk? I moved the power bar from the floor to the pegboard for the same reasons that I moved all the devices: to declutter. Also, if I ever have to add/remove/upgrade a device, it helps that I can remove the pegboard in one piece without having to disconnect everything. It's all self-contained.
- TheKingInYellow, on 10/12/2007, -21/+9@steven401
i am so sorry but i have to comment on your use of the word "too". most people use the word incorrectly the other way around (using "to" for "too") but the way you used it incorrectly is just genius. congrats!
as for the other "to" and extra "look(s)" i am at a complete loss. - blimpmaster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+120Now the pegboard looks cluttered.
- jcm267, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Well... I have considered putting it on my desk just so I could turn off the computer completely when not in use. I considered doing it for all of my appliances to save on $$$, but figured the hassle of taking an extra 10 seconds to turn these things on and off just wasn't worth the money I'd save...

There are others that if I see it I'd get agitated for a second.... not so much here but at work in memos (especially when my boss does it, and he does it all the time) - sulf, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Yeap, why would you need to keep stuff like routers, modems and AC adapter on your desk in the first place? Perhaps the only thing that could be on the desk is a DVD writer, buy most people use internal cd/dvd drives anyway.
- rewen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2man, i keep mine in my back pocket at all times. it's so i can keep my stuff powered on the go!
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2All of that crap is behind a bookshelve for me, and the modem/router is out in the garage. I've noticed that when you keep the computer on a desk which is hard to move, or has a bookshelve next to it, its alot easier to keep the wires and such out of sight.
- darkamster07, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1all of that stuff he has under his desk I have under mine as well...on my floor
- spyseetuna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2At work I've got a power strip on the right side of my desk. When I arrive in the morning, I can plug in my laptop without having to reach down to the floor. When I leave it's quicker to pack up and go. As a bonus, the power brick cables don't have to be unwound all the way.
- MaGnA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Keeping the power bar off the floor is a good idea. Especially if you've got pets or spiders around, it's a dust and hair magnet.
One downside to keeping all stuff beneath the desk is, you sometimes want to see the led activity on your modem/router etc.
- Chazzer3, on 10/12/2007, -10/+36Unfortunately I quite like pressing my knees/legs up against the underside of my desk, so this would be out of the question!!! However, it is a very interesting and valuable idea, dugg.
Charlie -- uberlord, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12What I would do is just get a keyboard tray, I always push my knees against that, and if you got one you would still be able to de-clutter your desk!
Assuming that was your only reason for not wanting a peg board hanging from the bottom of your desk with $2,000 of equipment... - Chaos12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I do the same thing, :(

- optimuscrime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Someone I new in college had their house burn down. The cause was clothes draped over a wireless router. It was a Linksys WRT54G.
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9It's okay, nothing too valuable under there.... errm

- Waxmaker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Great idea. Although you kinda have to have a decent desk to begin with (my current one is a crappy old cherry "executive-style" desk).
That desk looks pretty nice. Where'd you get it, vmardian?- vmardian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Ikea. It's called "Jerker". EXTREMELY sturdy. The drawers are optional.
- Asriel86, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2The Jerker has an upper shelf and the desktop is curved so your fat gut can scoot up into it, you must be thinking of another desk.
- vmardian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Jerker is the product line. This is the "Jerker Desk". You are describing the "Jerker Computer table".
- qualish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Jerker." : X
- brilliantshadow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The first thing I thought when I looked at the pics was: Hmm that guy has the same DVD burner as me.
The second thing I thought was: Hmm that desk sure looks familiar... except I opted for the black one, since it's fake wood anyway.
Maybe I'll copy the setup.. pretty sweet.
- optimuscrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+70Getting rid of the CRT should have been step one.
- rarkai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+68Step one is "Cut a hole in a box"

- drunkenirish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Something to take into account: I used to do this with my external HD and I found that after so many hours of having it plugged in, it would get really REALLY hot.
After about 2 months of it being mounted under my desk (average on time of 5 hours a day), the drive just failed. Make sure you have the area well ventilated! - ochants76, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1hurts my knees just looking at it...
- daveheinzel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15A few years ago I installed a firewire memory card reader on the underside of my desk, very similar to what's pictured here, minus the pegboard. I have a photo at:

- lintmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Just curious - why do you have the tie stapled to the desk with the USB cable running through it?
- vmardian, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1linktmonkey, not 100% sure what you are referring to. There are three USB wires and the cable modem wire that are bundled together, but they aren't attached to the pegboard. It may just look that way from the camera angle.
- sirdaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@vmardin:
I think he's referring to daveheinzels photo... - daveheinzel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The blue tie is to keep the cable close to the underside of the desk. There's a metal support brace under the table (at bottom of picture), and I have a blue tie on each side of it. The loop is big enough to slide the end of the cable through, so if I need to unplug it for some reason, the cable is not physically locked into anything.
The desk I have is the Jerker model from IKEA, same as the one pictured in the main story, but I believe his is the longer model, while mine is shorter but has a couple shelves above the top.
You can see my whole desk at:

If you cycle through the pics in that gallery, there are more pictures of the desk and my cord jungle behind it.

- Peptis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1CRTs produce higher quality pictures than LCDs do. The only advantage of an LCD would be that it took up less room on his desk, but now that he doesn't need to store crap behind the monitors what would be the point?
- vmardian, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Send me one!

- xcoastie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Dugg, This is a great idea. I have a infant crawling around and I need to get all the cords off the floor. Although I might put the peg board on the back of the desk (as someone else suggested) instead of under it for safety.
Thanks - phmfthacim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6this would make it inconvenient to steal the stuff too!
- Toecutter, on 10/12/2007, -16/+0Why would you have all that on your desk anyways, power strips, routers most people dont have that on their desks they have them elsewhere.
And permanantly mounting an external drive why not have an internal drive ?
And how many times are you gonna stab yourself in the knee with that twist wire?
Stuff like this stays on the internet forever and in 5 years when you graduate college and put out a resume for that spiffy new job your potential employers gonna see that stuff and say no way I want this guy touching our network.- vmardian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+201. - VSack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I've been doing something very similar for years.
A little trick I learned in my days of doing car modifications was this crap called "Scotch Exterior Mounting Tape"
Its not foam based, so it doesn't dry out and get all crappy.
It is EXTREMELY strong
It bounds to many different surfaces.
If I want something that is going to be stuck in a place permanently, this is the crap I use. I've got a 7 port USB hub stuck under my desk, WAPs mounted without having to drill, and a plethora of other stupid uses. This crap is always useful.
Here's an Amazon link from Google. I hope its not affiliate tracked:

I would be worried that the pegboard would catch fire from all of the heat on it, especially in the area of the power strip and all of the power supplies. If the pegboard gets too hot it will start smoldering. And you may not even notice you've got a fire until your entire desk goes up in flames.

- Markpdotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think you mean "shoddy", retard!
If you can do better, upload some pics! Don't criticise other peoples work for no reason!

- TravisS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not really related, but I mount a lot of the wireless receivers for like wireless controllers, keyboards and other wireless computer peripherals inside my computer case, I found a usb cable that connects to the mobo headers + a USB hub. Works great to get rid of having all of those receivers sitting outside on your desk somewhere.
- xero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I will definitely try this!
- rYno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3what i'm wondering with all that... how hot do your legs get when you're sitting at your desk?
- wjw75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8You'd think after all that trouble he might have bought a wireless mouse
- vmardian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm waiting for someone to release a nice bluetooth mouse!
- malice8691, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2good idea. well done
- aleksjay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0May be it was easier to build a drawer for that desk.
- spatimouth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm going to give that a try, but I'm going to paint the board black and mount it on my wall ....
- spatimouth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Also he should be "Pig Tailing" those wires so they don't scratch him
- TridenTBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I rather use Velcro... Just put a lot of the spikey stuff under the desk, then put all the soft on the bottom(or top) of your routers etc. That way if you want it to be on ground, you don't have it rippin out your carpet if you have it. :)
- blurrie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3how hot is it under your desk?
- colonelpanic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Don't Ethernet cables need to be a minimum of 3 ft because of crosstalk and the amount of twists in the wire? Could affect network performance noticeably.
- Tremblor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I used to have a desk built into my closet, and i used wire shelving with laminated wood as a desktop. I ran all my wires underneath the desk and used zip-ties to bundle the cords and affix them to the wire shelving. I also put in the power strips upside down under the desk and plugged all the wires up into them to get everything off the floor.
- spac3d, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0All well and good until you have to throw your hard drive into a river nearby because it has half life 3 source code freshly ripped from valve..!
- annihilator675, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4huh?
- SparkyPine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why not put a piano hinge on one side of the pegboard so it can swing down long enough to work on stuff when needed. Then it can be locked back up into position using one (or two) of those cheap fence latches on the opposite side of the hinge.
- vmardian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I don't anticipate working on it enough to justify that added work and when I do work on it I'd like the freedom of moving it around freely.
- rouslan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Those of you who think your desk is messy, wait till you see mine-My desk cluttered with computer parts, tools, measurement apparatus, books, schematics, electronic parts, wires, scews, cd's, and drawing utensils. And right next to it a pile of servers and networking equipment.
I don't understand how you can clutter your desk when you only have a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. - niqqa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Can't say i agree with this. Alot of hardware isn't designed with having it rest upside down in mind. Alot of these things produce heat, therefore having these things sitting upside down keeps the heat on board rather than rising off it. Think of it as if you were to install a car sound amplifier upside down. It would simply overheat causing dmg to its board.
- DrewBlood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No reason most of it would have to be upside down. The only thing there with moving parts is the external HDD and those get mounted upside down in towers all the time so no real difference. I think it's great! I've been wanting a really simple desk that wouldn't look like a computer desk/rat's nest since I'm very limited on space. I'm going to have to do something similar, but I need to hide a printer and scanner too.
