- dpierce, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22They just picked Austin as a proof of concept. The real craigslist didn't update anything.
- sometemple, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17are you kidding me? compare the two and try that again. craigslist is an eyesore. this is gorgeous.
- rjcarr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I don't really care about the look, but craigs needs some work in the searching department.
o how about only search for items with pics?
o how about date limited search?
o matches in titles and/or body option
o many more things - heinous, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13I agree! There's some legibility issues with the font choices and colors. low contrast == hard on the eyes. sky blue on grey == low contrast. Also, the layout does not scale well. Try increasing your font size a few times and watch how it falls apart. What about the visually impaired?
- Broadway, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10That site really does look excellent, to keep it on point.
I imagine it would be a damn sight easier to convince new people to use it without it looking all 1998. - wolfzero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Craig Newmark of Craigslist has seen it, and on the subject of will it be used, he was quoted as saying, "Talk to my CEO." So...I guess they'll review it and make a decision, in the mean time, no plans have been made to change the design as far as I can tell from the article.
- jgrahamc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I agree. I actually wrote to Craig and Jim Buckmaster about adding Bayesian style filtering to Craigslist. Imagine a system of thumbs up and down on posts and then filtering of all future CL content based on your personal preferences.
Their reply was... interesting, but we don't have either the bandwidth (in terms of people) or the hardware to do personalized filtering like this.
Pity because POPFile does a great job on email and there's no reason why the same technology can't be applied in other areas. In fact I make my living by selling people software that does exactly that.
John. - dominowrecker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5looks pretty blah to me....looks more like a personal website design then a real company.
I see this happening more and more. When you look at European designs compared to this, it looks lame. I find it ironic that as more and more people are on a high-speed connection, we are seeing more and more basic sites. I mean I get it for some things, but for a company I think it's pretty lame.
With that said. I dont really think design has anything to do with a site being popular or doing well. As a matter of fact some of the ugliest sites on the web are also the most popular. (Ebay, Google, Amazon, yahoo, etc) so maybe there is something to making sites look like crap? hehe who knows, but as a designer I think it looks way too boring. I have seen powerpoint layouts with better design ethic heh.
Oh well I will say that it does look better then it used to (not that, that's saying much) - haleym, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Didn't look very closely at the source, did you? The calendar is the only element on the entire page that's a table, and it's a suitable choice here - I'm all for using CSS for positioning and layout, but using it to position every individual date cell in that tiny calendar grid would just be overkill.
- hootpie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Aesthetically pleasing--I like it.
- keegan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Here is another redesigned Craigslist page to check out: http://justwatchthesky.com/vault/sxsw/listings.html
- thomashallock, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6mad props to the first one that makes a greasemonkey script that implements this.
- snarkle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I wonder how long it will be before a new greasemonkey script is available for this redesign.......
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I find the design change trivial. If they are going to redesign it, why not go for the gusto?
All too often I see site redesigns that clutter up the interface. A local paper did this recently, wweek.com , which makes it incredibly hard to find any single set of info, and now I visit less and less.
Pages need white space, blankness for your eyes to naturally wander across. - philbrewer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3altho craigslist is perfectly useable the way it is this design is pretty.
- LooterMcBeer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i forgot to add the site still looks like ***** all they did was make it bold and changed the colors who gives a ***** craigslist is one of the worst site designs in history
- scrum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not bad. Visually, it looks pleasing. If I just came across two websites, this one and the old one, I would definitely favor the new.
That said, this version seems to lack much creative thought to form and function. The old craigslist did work, the simplicity was beautiful, but it was not without it's flaws. This carries that forward, and to me ends up feeling like a fresh coat of paint.
Why not try moving some furniture around? - Pocky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Craigslist doesn't look "all 1998." I think it is a great site, but it looks more like 1994.
- Anchoret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Huh? An improvement, certainly. "Gorgeous"? Hardly.
- xioner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5There is nothing wrong with basic.
Loads of flash and images a good design do not make! - outbreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2its decent looking, but all craigslist needs to do is a couple quick text/color changes and the current design would be perfectly fine.
- jeolmeun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't go white background. Keep craigslist the way it is. 1.0 for life!
- r©ain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3CL could benefit from a redesign, but this new design is neither attractive or easier to use.
Personally, between this "redesign" and the current CL design, I'd stick with the original.
But hey -- maybe this hubbub will get some gears grinding over at Cl and we might see some design overhaul because of it. - Bishoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like this much better. Not only do I not like the current CL design, I think it's hard to use. Craigslist gets better the more people who use it. The old school site may work well for the hip, long-timers, but I bet it turns a lot of new people off.
- tada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1search for pics on craiglist...
www.listpic.com - lavawalker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Tables are for tabular data, and, in this example, vertical placement which CSS lacks in full support. CSS doesn't automatically work in 600x800, take a look at any site like Yahoo: http://www.yahoo.com/ which is CSS.
- kuchino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice look, but i hope the Fix the flagging thing, drives me nuts when i post a ad.
- ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Check it out: http://digg.com/music/Free_Shows_(and_maybe_even_beer)_During_SXSW_06
- netstorm, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1yes this is crap
http://www.girlgames1.com - Malabooboo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it's a great improvement visually over the circa-mid 90's look that CL has held onto all these years. It's an excercise in web design, so the panel took the existing content and updated it to a new look and feel while sticking to craigslist's ideology of keeping the site simple and minimal.
Don't confuse this excercise in redesigning a visual look of a website with a complete redesign of a website, adding new features, functionality, etc. - leftfoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes
- lavawalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks great, Mr. Jones.
- AvengeX, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Buried as inaccurate, craigslist has not changed.
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it is about time. The last one looked like it was made in frontpage, lol.
- dominowrecker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I hear what you are saying...but this is beyond basic, its just text! (with some lame font choices as well in my opinion)
looks like a blog. not a real website.
oh well opinions are like *****, we all got um' hehe - sirmoggy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I like it, tighten up the vertical spacing a little bit and it'd be set.
- myobie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think this new design looks great. I think it allows a user to focus on the content.
I agree that some "furniture should be moved around," but when just touching the primary design elements, this is an improvement.
I think anything that would be implimented on the real Craigslist site would need a bit more thought and some reorganization. - ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are any diggers at SXSW?
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope they don't go with this. Craiglist is perfect as it is, at least as far as the design goes. I'm totally in favor of making functional improvements, but as far as the pure-text design goes, if it ain't broke...
I like that Craigslist loads like butter no matter what platform, device, or connection I'm using. Why mess with success? - edfladung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wicked. nice and simple. well organized. and lite. and look ma, no gradients! me likes.
- jamesey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I prefer the old craigslist to that
- Ghost_MH, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3If only every browser had Opera's "Fit to window width" feature...
- LooterMcBeer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1thats the main reason digg wont takeover /. but they keep adding tools for the kiddies
- randomtask, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The new layout is very nice; however, I can't help but have my eye instantly drawn to that big 'ol calendar on the left. I mean, the first time I saw the new page, I didn't even see the Craigslist logo.
- arturobandini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thank god... now how about slashdot
- AlN1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting, all these self-directed site update suggestions going on. I recently wrote a greasemonkey script that converts all of craigslist home pg links into their respective RSS link. works on any city's home pg.
http://www.userscripts.org/scripts/show/3510 - leftfoot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm glad they used my city as a Beta Tester, haha.
- whisperedlie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1uh... gorgeous? while i would agree that this is a definite improvement over the existing, i wouldn't describe it as gorgeous.
- santaclaws, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Don't you love the 14 year old fanboys on this site who have modded down every comment dissing the design?
