Craigslist gets a make over (Redesigned)
justwatchthesky.com — A six-man panel redesigned Craigslist for SXSW. The new design is gorgeous, slick, and almost as small as the original. Taken from : http://www.valleywag.com/tech/sxsw/sxsw-craig-gets-a- makeover-160270.php

bad
cant see *****, looks like a picture
original craigslist is better than this
also BAD LINK- sometemple, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17are you kidding me? compare the two and try that again. craigslist is an eyesore. this is gorgeous.
- heinous, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13I agree! There's some legibility issues with the font choices and colors. low contrast == hard on the eyes. sky blue on grey == low contrast. Also, the layout does not scale well. Try increasing your font size a few times and watch how it falls apart. What about the visually impaired?
- nekaidesigns, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Yeah, it's really only marginally better than the original craigslist. The aesthetic improvements are minimal (and arguable) at best, and the usability hasn't been improved - why is the "post to classifieds" button way off in the top corner, and not in the classifieds area?
- hootpie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Aesthetically pleasing--I like it.
- rjcarr, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Wait ... will this be on craigslist.org available for all cities?
- nugge7, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3That's what I wanna know. Very slick design!
- mgreenwald, on 10/12/2007, -18/+4http://denver.craigslist.org/ is still the same. :(
- dpierce, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22They just picked Austin as a proof of concept. The real craigslist didn't update anything.
- LordStandley, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6I like it, very clean looking.
- rjcarr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I don't really care about the look, but craigs needs some work in the searching department.
o how about only search for items with pics?
o how about date limited search?
o matches in titles and/or body option
o many more things- jgrahamc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I agree. I actually wrote to Craig and Jim Buckmaster about adding Bayesian style filtering to Craigslist. Imagine a system of thumbs up and down on posts and then filtering of all future CL content based on your personal preferences.
Their reply was... interesting, but we don't have either the bandwidth (in terms of people) or the hardware to do personalized filtering like this.
Pity because POPFile does a great job on email and there's no reason why the same technology can't be applied in other areas. In fact I make my living by selling people software that does exactly that.
John. - tada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1search for pics on craiglist...

- jadedknight, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Love the title.
- williamw, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2looks way better
- Seumas, on 10/12/2007, -37/+4Craigslist is ***** and it isn't because of the way it looks. It's because it's a white-trash rummage sale -- just globally. Are you really going to buy someone's used items on a site where that same person is probably looking for transgendered prostitutes for anonymous public sex? Ick.
- izzyb412, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Sounds like the prefect site to me.
- 3141592653, on 10/12/2007, -22/+4i dnt like it. craights list was good b4
- Broadway, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10That site really does look excellent, to keep it on point.
I imagine it would be a damn sight easier to convince new people to use it without it looking all 1998.- Pocky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Craigslist doesn't look "all 1998." I think it is a great site, but it looks more like 1994.
- QuorumCall, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Fine all lee.
- wolfzero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Craig Newmark of Craigslist has seen it, and on the subject of will it be used, he was quoted as saying, "Talk to my CEO." So...I guess they'll review it and make a decision, in the mean time, no plans have been made to change the design as far as I can tell from the article.
- YakkSoho, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Not a very good article
From what I can tell there's maybe one or two that have obtained the new design.
craigslist.org - same. :[
Also the design has a serious flaw, which is that its sized tables, to fit-to-screen style. It should be CSS so that if you're on 600x800 (which for some reason many people still are??) it doesnt' take 2 minutes to scroll to the right for all the articles.- lavawalker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Tables are for tabular data, and, in this example, vertical placement which CSS lacks in full support. CSS doesn't automatically work in 600x800, take a look at any site like Yahoo: http://www.yahoo.com/ which is CSS.
- Ghost_MH, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3If only every browser had Opera's "Fit to window width" feature...
- haleym, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Didn't look very closely at the source, did you? The calendar is the only element on the entire page that's a table, and it's a suitable choice here - I'm all for using CSS for positioning and layout, but using it to position every individual date cell in that tiny calendar grid would just be overkill.
- YakkSoho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't want to promote overkill, but using true widths for a column does not make it very res-friendly.
CSS is more practical for this purpose than hypertext tables?
- EvilCowSan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1looks great, altho i don't like having the town list on the bottom instead of the right
edit: i just realized they moved the 'popular' towns to the left - randomtask, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The new layout is very nice; however, I can't help but have my eye instantly drawn to that big 'ol calendar on the left. I mean, the first time I saw the new page, I didn't even see the Craigslist logo.
- mjm01010101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I find the design change trivial. If they are going to redesign it, why not go for the gusto?
All too often I see site redesigns that clutter up the interface. A local paper did this recently, wweek.com , which makes it incredibly hard to find any single set of info, and now I visit less and less.
Pages need white space, blankness for your eyes to naturally wander across. - green1152, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4I don't like it.
- wmtrader, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2There has been a need for Craig's List to update their site design from the stale 1997 look they have been stuck with, any change would be good.
- metaphysical, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Change is bad! Keep it old school :(
- reboare, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3Why don't you just put some kittens in the corner playing with yarn? LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME! Thank goodness this isn't real.
- r©ain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3CL could benefit from a redesign, but this new design is neither attractive or easier to use.
Personally, between this "redesign" and the current CL design, I'd stick with the original.
But hey -- maybe this hubbub will get some gears grinding over at Cl and we might see some design overhaul because of it. - dominowrecker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5looks pretty blah to me....looks more like a personal website design then a real company.
I see this happening more and more. When you look at European designs compared to this, it looks lame. I find it ironic that as more and more people are on a high-speed connection, we are seeing more and more basic sites. I mean I get it for some things, but for a company I think it's pretty lame.
With that said. I dont really think design has anything to do with a site being popular or doing well. As a matter of fact some of the ugliest sites on the web are also the most popular. (Ebay, Google, Amazon, yahoo, etc) so maybe there is something to making sites look like crap? hehe who knows, but as a designer I think it looks way too boring. I have seen powerpoint layouts with better design ethic heh.
Oh well I will say that it does look better then it used to (not that, that's saying much)- xioner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5There is nothing wrong with basic.
Loads of flash and images a good design do not make! - dominowrecker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I hear what you are saying...but this is beyond basic, its just text! (with some lame font choices as well in my opinion)
looks like a blog. not a real website.
oh well opinions are like assholes, we all got um' hehe
- xioner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5There is nothing wrong with basic.
- thomashallock, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6mad props to the first one that makes a greasemonkey script that implements this.
- j.carcinogen, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1http://austin.craigslist.org/
- CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2it's been wordpressed. a good try, but i prefer the original.
- sirmoggy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I like it, tighten up the vertical spacing a little bit and it'd be set.
- elit, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Another site that give you the space to post your ads for free is:
http://www.ocile.com
try it out - snarkle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I wonder how long it will be before a new greasemonkey script is available for this redesign.......
- xioner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Though craigslist has its own ugly charm.... this is very nice.
I makes me think of a well designed newspaper classified section. - phuqju, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2looks nice and clean. a refreshing page.
- vstarre, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1what's that? a completely static page which uses CSS and only works right at one particular resolution? CSS is so innovative and dynamic!
- owenkun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Feh, another SXSW story. The old site was perfectly workable and worked fine with older browsers, I see no reason to change it.
- dannywsu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Looks great! Now I just need the Columbus page to go through the redesign. The look is unfortunately one of the reasons I don't use Craigslist as much as I'd like.
- Geterix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0The "new" design looks great. I dont get some peoples want to keep the site looking like it was made in 1996. What, you think keeping it ugly is the web's version of sticking it to the man? These guys know that their site is becomming more popular everyday and the novelty of having a site like it was is going to wear off fast.
- jeolmeun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't go white background. Keep craigslist the way it is. 1.0 for life!
- EricB, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Anything is better than the way it used to look.
- jmholloway, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1great! so do it..
- alt3r360, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1A 6 person panel to pretty-up a site that is purposely stripped down for speed and function?
Sounds like a formula for success
Lame concept + hype + SXSW = free event and bar passes - jamesey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I prefer the old craigslist to that
- algorythm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This was long overdue. I like the new style!
- keegan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Love it. Definitely a step in the right direction from the old Craigslist.
- arturobandini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thank god... now how about slashdot
- keegan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Here is another redesigned Craigslist page to check out: http://justwatchthesky.com/vault/sxsw/listings.html
- lavawalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks great, Mr. Jones.
- kg4000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's my redesign of the listings (via a greasemonkey script).
http://home.gwu.edu/~kengo/craigtool/instruct.htm
- santaclaws, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Looks awful. Agreed CL could use a facelift, but this isn't it.
- leftfoot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm glad they used my city as a Beta Tester, haha.
- outbreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2its decent looking, but all craigslist needs to do is a couple quick text/color changes and the current design would be perfectly fine.
- whisperedlie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1uh... gorgeous? while i would agree that this is a definite improvement over the existing, i wouldn't describe it as gorgeous.
- Chupatumama, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Damn! Remind me never to get set up on a blind date by you guys.
Gorgeous?
The old site was dull but when I first arrived on this link, i thought I was mistakenly sent to of those generic placeholder portals that site squatters (GoDaddy's best clients) use.
It took 6 people to come out with this design?
- Chupatumama, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Damn! Remind me never to get set up on a blind date by you guys.
- philbrewer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3altho craigslist is perfectly useable the way it is this design is pretty.
