- dolemite5005, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22I sure hope people like going in a straight line because it looks like you can't turn the front wheel on over half of those designs.
- beforeIforget, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Those seats look very uncomfortable.
- phoenixrip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18There is no way in hell I am putting my arse on any of them, they look sadomasochistic torture devices!
- t1t0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Is it just me, or after spending some time on Digg, nothing in life will ever be cool anymore? Seems to me I've seen the "coolest" of everything now...
http://digg.com/search?s=coolest&submit=Search§ion=news&type=title&area=all&sort=most - oofgeg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Anyone else think of Mr.Garrison's "It" from South Park when they see those?
- ateam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Hasn't anyone noticed that this site is just a front for ads? Check out all of the sections on the menu. You'll find the little description for each is straight from Wikipedia.org. You see -- it's pretty easy to hop on the net and gather pictures to place into "random" categories. ...Or am I crazy?
- revmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9for those of you interested, proof that it was all a hoax:
http://mountainbiketales.com/articles/VerdraUpdate.htm
Trek's imo are garbage. sure, lance armstrong took them to wins. but they've never come up with anything particularly great. Specialized as far as bicycles are concerned are far better, especially with the mountain line. - MrBabyMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I remember the first time these were on Digg (years ago, it seems). Even more amazing than the bikes themselves, is that they're completely created from scratch in Photoshop. Here's the artist's how-to on these:
http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/sro06.html - logicalnoise, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10those remind me of this: http://carnalreason.org/images/misc/wheel.sp.gif
- cmh451, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Bike designs stolen from Scott Robertson at Designstudiopress.com. Good work, pilferer.
- mashyouup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Uh oh.... this is sure to prompt MTV into the development of a Pimp My Bicycle series.
- hunglowang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Pitty the site didnt even credit the original designer. More of his work can be found below
Scott Robertson - http://drawthrough.com/ - upasaka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5For the record, The website's url, translated from swedish is "only *****". Really.
The more you know..... - tonich03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Give credit to the author! His name is Scott Robertson and you can find tutorials by him, just search Gnomon tutorials in google. He's awesome.
- ateoto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I love me some Specialized bikes, but wtf? Those were crrraaazzzzy.
- DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Just because the handlebars and front wheel aren't linked by a single post doesn't mean you can't steer these. Indirect linkages, rear wheel steering, and steer by wire are all ways around this.
- Seomann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Finally! someone with futuristic idea.
Its seven years since the 21st century and I have seen nothing futuristic other than digg. - ElbridgeGerry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3These look more like "concept crotch stabbers"
- tpaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@themastersb
Coral cache to the rescue:
http://www.baraskit.se.nyud.net:8090/random/archive/15/bicycles.html - Abudiwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that's great. they're stealing content.
click on nice walls.
that is banksy and they don't mention or link to him once. - Abudiwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not crazy.
perceptive.
i bet if you emailed them as the copyright holder and had them take it off they'd just take some more pictures put them on there and move on. - mntbikeracer1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Some interesting frames there, albeit these are pretty old. Look like they would only be useful on a track for hour records. Some of Cervelo or Softrides old concept bike are much cooler though.
- Timmmm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Woa small wheels. Wouldn't want to be going 20mph on that!
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3First, these are CG bikes made by Scott Robertson, http://www.drawthrough.com/ (more pictures there).
Secondly these are pretty but not really good for cycling. Anyone whom is an experienced road or track cyclist knows that weight is very important. Some of these bikes look like they've got a lot of weight when a simple bar will do. The increased surface area actually increases on drag. Some of these look heavy and bulky which would suck in the Tour De France or other races.
A dream bike for road/track cyclists is one that responds well, is extremely lightweight (some may want the 15 lb limit for races, others wouldn't mind a 5 lb bike), performs fantastically, looks be damned. - gambit2121, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As both a cyclist and an aspiring industrial designer, I love the creativity and ingenuity displayed here. With bicycle design you really need to stretch the boundaries a lot due to the simple fact that todays bikes are nothing more than tubes of metal, not much room for design, except in the graphics and small details.
- doodlebumm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That one was by far my favorite, too! Spokeless!
- fujiubear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, not aero at all either. They look pretty lame to me. I stick to my Cannondale Six13...
- wooptoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Am I the only one who was more amazed by this site's design than of the pictures? :P
- isukeyo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe cool looking images, but the designs are terrible. Has anyone noticed that on 5 of the designs, there is no way to steer (some cases the connection from the wheel to the main frame has no pivot point to allow turning of any kind and in other cases, the handle bars isn't even connected to the front wheel.)
As far as comfort is concerned, I don' think any of these bikes are less comfortable than most professional racing and mountain bikes (I think many of the people who commented on this above have not ridden or seen a bicycle in the last 20 years).
These certainly are cool sci-fi looking graphics, but design wise they are utterly useless (except for 3,6,8 which seem to be functional). - neuros, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I was going to say I doubt BMW would design something that ugly, then I'm reminded of the new 330 convertible.
And why is Specialized in quotes?.... - thestorey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Or http://carnalreason.org/images/misc/wheel.jpg
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Most look like standard bikes with extra plastic....
Some just look like they'd hurt. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Steering?
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's some styling bikes.
http://www.smidigt.se/rwanda-wood-bikes/2034/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool :)
- gambit2121, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah. right.
bmw, in addition to designing automobiles and motorcycles has a division that handles other aspects of design, from product to, obviously, cycle design. - superlife, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pimp my bike Japanese style, on the same site:
http://www.baraskit.se/random/archive/11/pimped_bicycles.html - bbardlbradd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MMM!!! The "Wild Wacky Action Bike"... It's been a long time.
- Ruhtar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Considering that most of the content on the site is stolen from elsewhere, as the images that this Digg is about were, and since removed, I wouldn't doubt if the site design itself is ripped off from somewhere as well.
Buried because ripping off other's designs and content and not giving credit and without permission is lame as hell! - fmaxwell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What the artist (I won't honor him with the title of Engineer) apparently fails to grasp is that the bicycle gets its strength from triangulation. Take away the seatpost and you are left with the seat stays, chain stays, down tube, and top tube forming a four-sided shape - which lacks the strength of the classic two-triangle bicycle configuration. On a traditional bicycle, the seat tube, top tube, and seat stays are all under compression while the chain stays and down tube are under tension. It's an inherently elegant bit of engineering.
Sure, you can try to make bicycles like the imaginings of the artist strong enough with clever construction techniques, but that's just putting a bandaid (excuse me -- "plastic strip") on a flawed design. - mrsneakypat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://mrbucket33.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/wwab.jpg
- themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The images have been deleted :(
- impedance101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1dugg for racing babes in the random collections
- PRlME, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Read ShrimpCrackers POST
The Bikes where made in Photoshop there where not made as a Hoax but looks like some one took the pictures and then made it seem the way.
For every one saying "Those seats look very uncomfortable." its a concept...not made with your ass in mind.
and Plz give Credit to Scott Robertson - http://drawthrough.com/ - theladyavatar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1the bikes on that site don't look so functional/comfortable
but check out the other sections! - Hydraulix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1#7 looks like a pod racer. I'd buy it just because of that.
- CharlesHinshaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't even see content on this link
- stevex0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Screw that just build your own damn bike.
http://www.chicagofreakbike.org/ - dancenhance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That Bianchi (last) is teh sexay.
- revmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8they're not actually concept bicycles, it was just someone dicking around on photoshop. it was supposed to be the "concept" bikes, but it all turned out to be a big april fool's hoax.
The last bike, the aquamarine one, was an actual concept bike designed by Bianchi.
for the record, Specialized makes some of the best bikes out there... i've personally owned 3. -
