- EverySam, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41Description is inaccurate. Filter→ Blur→ Average in Photoshop will average any selection into one color, no matter what the size is; go to Select All if you want to average the whole image. Then the Eyedropper tool (which I assume is what the description is referring to) will tell you the exact color of the average.
- megaton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Would it come as a surprise to anyone to learn that you can do the same thing in your favorite image editor by resampling (resizing) your image to 1x1 pixel? Be sure to use the highest quality resampling filter you've got for the most accurate result!
- shaun1018, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25Sometimes I don't understand why people don't understand why people digg down certain comments.
- rybeckishere, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22another way to do it:
'squint' - tidu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Who gives a *****?
- lolwtfhaha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18In death, however. . .
- chicoer2001, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I see no use for this in day to day life.
- Poco, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15"Many popular image-editing tools allow you to determine the average color of a single pixel..."
Um, the average color of a single pixel? Everyone knows it's spelled colour. - Imagium, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13This tool would work great for background colors when designing websites or other marketing material. Especially when you need a base color that will work with the existing company's branded color scheme.
- wonginator1221, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This tool could be used (really inefficiently) to make mosaics. You know, like the ones that are made of many small pictures to form a larger image.
ex:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mosaicr_seagull.jpg - fishpen0, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Any picture that you put in that has more than a few variant shades of one color, spits out a shade of gray for the "average color"
- wicked9, on 10/12/2007, -4/+91/(b-a) * integral of image
- stevenvh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Algorithm or it didn't happen
- EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Error: jpeg images only"
doh - Veign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Or use:

>Prove that fruit sellers put the best-looking fruit in the most prominent location.
I do this like every day. - alx1507, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Beat me too it. Its a tool I use in photoshop for color correcting photos.
- elsewhen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4here is what they used the tool for (check out the pictures)
http://www.wisegeek.com/do-merchants-display-the-best-looking-fruit-on-top.html - lilsis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6neat, i didnt know that could be done. a useful tool indeed
- DariusMonsef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.colourlovers.com/palettes/add
A better use of the color from a picture feature and it allows you to directly turn the colors selected into palette to use later in Photoshop or other programs. - simonpainter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can this technology not be combined with a vast source of images and a single target image to produce something similar to those big posters with images made up of lots of little images (like the yoda ones that are available)
- rockrapdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You could use adobe photoshop cs(insert number) blur average tool. Exactly the same. Does the GIMP have the average thing too? If yes then use GIMP
- haydesigner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What about a picture of @KuntaKinte?
Is it a picture of an ass, or a picture of an ass? - LordOmbra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice, but there is a small freeware tool (no install) that does the same and more. I prefer that over uploading photos to some 3rd party site.
http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/Average-Color-Seeker/avgcolor.html - ozonew4m, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1Ive been preparing a blog post on my new blog at http://www.color-chart.org to show people how to do this in photoshop but this tool is amazing.. great find thanks
- monospaced, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you don't need color-averaging software to see the difference between the strawberries, or any fruit for that matter. as for the "theory" that the best fruit is put forward: it's a fact.
- akuzemchak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Perhaps the more useful tool is http://www.pic2color.com/index.htm, where you can get a full palette from an image, or even have it recolor an image for you.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or to remove a colour-tint from an image, you can invert the averaged image from the original image (And drop the opacity) - Although why you wouldn't use the image-editing tool to do the averaging I have no idea..
- carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1bookmarking, away from home.
- digitalArtform, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just blur the crap out of it first and sample that.
as for mosaics...

- phaed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Pretty useless simple algorithm.
- linduxed, on 08/16/2008, -0/+0...for americans.
And contrary to their belief, their country is not most important in the world. - arnowillig, on 09/02/2008, -0/+0nice one.
- Daveoh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Taking an average colour is what Supersampling (a technique of anti-aliasing) does. Look it up on Wikipedia.
- wpennb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Well, it's not going to make you breakfast, but it has some uses.
One example being if you are an artist, you can sample a few pictures and try to get an overall average colour. - monospaced, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2not in America, and that's all that really counts
- evil-doer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4beat me as well as you can see below. i deleted.
average is great for evening out skintones - haydesigner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Not really sure of a viable use here...
- Nurjle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I can see your logic, but that's just not going to bear out in practise. 'Averaging' colours will almost invariably muddy them, so unless you're looking for browns and greys as backgrounds, you're unlikely to be terribly pleased with the result.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2thats *****
thats just making the picture one pixel by one pixel dumbasses. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6Thanks.. This is "really useful". No wait... whats that other phrase? Oh yeah.. "***** retarded".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1You're all design rookies and this tool is worthless.
- JoshChan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1why do I ever need that?
- Sammy20, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3This is so ***** stupid
- evil-doer, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4nothing.
- esotericguy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1damn you, i almost made it through the day without seeing anthother damn formula/equation!
- rebot7, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0define cool...
- malonesm, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1You can get the same result from squinting.
- mcdavis941, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0If you're thinking of being my baby it don't matter if you're black or white.
