- kyote, on 10/25/2007, -1/+7I was interested in goplan until i found out they used paypal.
I used activecollab for a while, but don't have time to trouble shoot it when things go wrong.
Basecamp was cool, I liked it out of the best. simple to use.
the downside of all of these? getting clients to use them. clients are lazy and they just won't mess with it regardless of the benefits. - fboliv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5We're definitely listening to this kind of feedback. We also do realize the importance of "time tracking", but we want to make project management easy and nail that down now, and we'll definitely tackle that problem next. Thanks for the opinion, we do appreciate it.
- withashovel, on 10/25/2007, -1/+5The time-tracking feature in Basecamp sucks anyway - It lacks the capability to separate time into 'billable' and 'non-billable' hours. You end up having to use Harvest along with Basecamp.
- thewump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd agree with that and add to it. I find it great for my simple one-man-shop needs so slightly frustrated that its in the $50 / month plan.. much more than one-man-shop in most ways.
- Glenn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Looks great, I’ve just set up an account. I’ll give this a try in my ongoing search for the perfect task and project management tool.
- jcims, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been mucking with activeCollab for a little while. We do security assessments and a hosted project management solution wouldn't fly for most of our customers. We used phpCollab 2-3 years ago. It completely rocked, but the main developer quit and it never picked up any steam after that. There were a few forks (e.g. netOffice) but they just didn't have the same fit and finish that phpCollab did. That kind of thing makes me a little nervous about activeCollab, but it appears to have achieved critical mass, and the author appears to be planning on backing it with a corporation, which hopefully will give it some funding for constant development and improvement.
Time tracking and expense reporting are two huge things for us that i've rarely seen done well outside of the 'Professional Services Automation' market, which ask $30+ per head per month. Kind of steep for small firms. - Hush, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Going to check out activecollab. We're currently hacking around with drupal to get it to do proj. management, but there are certain limits that can't be overcome.
I'm hoping activecollab will let you upload more than one file at a time, and also be able to handle lots of sites and users. and since it's so early, will allow for easy and reliable backups and upgrades.
Any security issues yet that anyone knows about, specifically concerning users accessing sites they don't have permission to? Also, any reports of people using it for large sites?
dugg. - thewump, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3FYI: The new boy lacks time tracking which is a major feature of Basecamp when you get the $50 / month level.
- WikiEasy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm using Trac + Subversion to do all of my bug testing and feature sets. The software I'm developing is for my company only, and not for outside clients.
Does anyone here use Trac to do their project management, or is there another tool that can integrate all of these together? - Kimmage, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Frankly, I cancelled my basecamp account. It turned out to be a collaboration tool, not a project management one. It didn't even have Gantt charts! I checked a couple of apps and finally settled with wrike (www.wrike.com). In wrike you manage and create you tasks sending emails. Very handy!
- tpinto, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Nice review, Derek!
- hesiodsoftware, on 07/03/2009, -0/+0Also a good project manager tool is Premember it allows to track your project time by looking back into time.
Check it out @ www.hesiodsoftware.com - johann21, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Also be sure to check out OnStage - http://www.chmuraecon.com/OnStage/. We just started using this service. I liked it a little better than goplan.
- huyashamasha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Really good. I've never thought it is for real.

http://www.freedownloads32.com - fudgie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1My little pet project at http://www.clockingit.com is also a nice alternative. No fees at all, and just about all the features of the ones reviewed here (including time tracking).
I've got Subversion integration running privately already, but I guess that won't be much of an issue before I open up the source and let people host it themselves.
