- stupidStan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+82This was on DIgg before, and I collected a bunch of useful links just like it - great topic!

- Scottish, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25Open your eyes. There are about 20 different ways it can find colors for you.
- enicholas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21I'm sick of the "black and white aren't colors" crap. They most certainly are. They aren't HUES, but they are indeed colors.
Think about it like this. Take red light. It's a color, right? Good. Now add green light to it. If you mix it right, the human eye will perceive it as yellow. Still a color, right? Now add one more frequency to it -- blue. If you mix it right, the human eye will perceive it as white. Now, tell me, why can we mix red and green together and call it a color, but as soon as we add blue to it suddenly it enters mystical "not a color" realm? How close to pure white does a color have to be before we suddenly say "nope, not a color anymore"? - giveer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20I'm such a nerd. The first thing I thought was: "you mean: '...colors that go WELL with it?'"
- ophilye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18The only real fun in this thing is to take your mouse & make circles....
..then watch the pretty colors dance. - Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -10/+25It seems it finds complement colors _of the same brightness_ as whatever you click. That's not finding matching colors.
Example: click white. You'll find the only color matching white is... white. Guess which the only color which matches black is? - jasta12, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23black & white aren't clours
- tnvwboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16@iPeeFreely
"and if you are a graphic designer then ur not gonna use this as you already know what colours to use to complement each other."
I disagree. Even graphic designers like help. It's not like there is a virtual swatch book in our heads putting it all together. - PlaneLayz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13http://www.colorschemer.com/online.html
I always found this to be FAR more useful than anything i've tried elsewhere.
See what you all think? - b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11cloud764-
we're talking about light, whereas you are referring to paint. - biggrz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8But will it ble... Apparently.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Not bad, but I still use ColorSchemer for coming up with base design palettes. Slick, quick, easy to use and it even creates palettes from photos automatically.
(No, I do not work for the company. I just like the tool a *lot*.) - Chiliap2, on 10/12/2007, -13/+21Thats definitely pretty cool.
- soapycub, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Never even knew about this -- WAY better than the submitted ColorJack. Thanks Dradis!
- ThePict, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I found myself wishing for a sphere that would help people pick words that go gooder together.
- lharboe, on 05/01/2009, -6/+12Check out the Widget!!!!!
- dawheelo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9The widget is incredibly cool! Download it directly from Apple:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/reference/colorjacksphere.html - reevolutn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5PAINT MY FENCE!!!
- PureForm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I prefer http://www.colourlovers.com myself.
- DeskFlyer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6What's nice about this is that it is useful even for people who are colorblind like me.
- reevolutn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4PAINT MY FENCE!!
- sequethin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4the widget is handy, but I'd love it if there were a yahoo widget too
- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I am looking for specific coloring scheme... Much like a Raspberry Buttercreme with an Electric Mango hue...
Or maybe a Talbot Mauve with a Agave Green a bit of a fresh view. - orientis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That's not nerdy. That's just using words to go good with meaning.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I've downloaded too many visual styles for XP that were great except for one or two really poor color choices (i.e. black-on-black menus or caption buttons, stuff like that) that made the interface almost impossible to use. Hopefully this helps some of them.
- scootscr15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It tells me I have no taste in colors. Time to repaint the house...
- Slacker1031, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this is an ok reference for designers, but it certainly isn't a "powerful tool". Anyone who is actually in design knows how to work well with colors and knows what compliments what.
- Pyrodogg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2finally something i can use to make things match
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It does help, try the complimentary, neutral, and analogous schemes.
Colors matching and complimenting each other is equally important in website, interior, and clothing design. - Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Neither of those do a good job of color matching. Matching isn't about just showing 3 shades of the same color, the second link doesn't even do matching, it just seems to be a color picker. Lastly the Color Wheel v1.2 isn't decent at all, you have to put RGB value in first. Its great if you happen to know the specific RGB value, but how about having some form of palette to get you started. If your going to plug other tools, don't be a tool doing it.
- hotinhurr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2awesome! this will be really useful when I paint my house!
- okokitsme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3...And beats my trial-and-error by changing one letter at a time from the code!
- Jezper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lol, what the hell? This doesn't match anything :) That's not matching! Ok, lame.
- camkerr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yeah, I have the widget for this for OSX, i like kuler much better
- patricks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In my opinion this would be WAY more useful if i could plug in a starting hex and get a resulting scheme. Maybe I am missing that? Seems like it's a big oversight if it's not there.
- jasta12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@enicholas
The colour you 'see' on an object, is the colour or frequency of light that is not absorbed by its surface, so is reflected away by the surface & captured by your eye. What you see is what the object is not, in a funny sense.
The black you see in the real world is the absence of any light or colour reflected back by the pigmentation of an object, or because there is no light, or maybe your eyes are shut (in which case no light reaches your retina). Black paint is an imperfect attempt to 'stealth' something in the visible light bands.
White at the other extreme is, as people have correctly said, all bands of coloured light without any filtering. The object reflects all light waves. White is not a colour either. The full FM radio spectrum is not a radio station. It is a little pedantic, but there you go. I think they (b&w) are both referred to as tones, but I'm not 100% on that. But don't confuse the inexact science of paint pigmentation with colour & tone, which it attempts to duplicate.
For practical everyday purposes, everyone understands what you mean when you say you want the black suitcase or the white shirt when asked which colour you'd prefer. And few are pedantic enough to warrant smacking by replying "ah but that isn't a colour" after asking you. Like most colours, near enough is good enough to indicate in everyday life, which is what you're getting at with your question about how 'white' white has to be, to be white. A good trained eye can make very discerning judgements about small variations in tone, but they're really not necessary or even helpful in many situations outside of technical settings. - Rochmndx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This totally pw3ns!
- Cinin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well I'm glad you guys found this useful. I thank Stumble. Also who really cares about if black or white is a color. In reality you have know way of knowing what colors people see. Such as my red might look like a green to you (from my eyes) but you've been told the color is red so you call it red.
- djsputnik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2this app sucks. gui is ugly. http://kuler.adobe.com/
- alphaborie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I need to apply this to my dressing skills.
- NBTalks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is simply superb. I have been looking for something like this since last few days. Simply great. Thanks for this awesome article. Dugg!.
- Soulglow, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5what exactly were you expecting if you clicked on white or black? they're both neutral. take any color scheme you want, and add white or black to it, lol.
- gnarbuckets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So cool... I just wish I had a use for it.
- Hayes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This hex sphere is alright... but here's an ACTUAL color scheme generator: http://wellstyled.com/tools/colorscheme2/index-en.html
- confusednazgul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Love it! Sure, there are other color tools out there like Adobe's Kuler, but it's neat to have a little tool like this for randomly clicking around for surprise color combos.
- rocket2dmn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1awesome find for those of us who do some web development and management. the ease and simplicity of use make it all the better.
- Zipp425, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yay, for colorjack. It deserved attention.
- mendigg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Cool. I have a good eye for color and do a pretty good job picking out my own clothes/decorating the apartment, but this will definitely take me to the next level. You can as to look sites in Russian which mention this theme: http://www.rolid.org http://www.se-ua.com
