- Zippo, on 04/08/2009, -45/+583Ugh, another one of these. All ads require Photoshop work — it's what we're paid to do as graphic designers and production artists. For one thing, all photos need colour correction if they're going to print properly - not to mention the various elements of the ad, from the typography to the borders. While, yes, sometimes there's too much airbrushing of people's skin, etc, just because something's Photoshopped doesn't mean it's, by default, a terrible thing.
Like I said last time, when your face is blown up to such a large size and printed for all to see, even the slightest imperfections are -glaring-. Design is a science and an art; we want your eyes to focus on certain parts so as to be an effective piece of advertising - their face as a whole is the main target, followed by the CD album and the copy written directly below. Anything else that might distract this takes away from the ad. The last thing you want is someone to pass by the ad and say "Holy *****, look at the gigantic mole on Brit's face" or "wow, look how many wrinkles are under Christina's eyes!" Fine wrinkles aren't so fine when they're printed at that size.
Look, I'm not justifying excessive Photoshopping... but I disagree with its villainizing. I mean, if we're going to say that Photoshopping a person's face is wrong, we might as well villainize all forms of make-up and hair products as well.
Here's another thing to note - it's not always the designers who are to blame. Often, it's the client who's to blame. It's just as likely that Britney/Christina/Leona's agent demanded that all imperfections be brushed over - to make their client look as beautiful as possible. Ultimately, it's the client who's paying for the poster to be created and printed. Lord knows I've dealt with picky and annoying clients before — I don't even want to think what dealing with a pop celebrity's agent would be like. - inactive, on 04/08/2009, -4/+244or a Smart Object to her head
- Hoboking333, on 04/09/2009, -32/+223I think you missed the point. The reason it's clearly photoshopped is because you can still see the application running...
- holyskeleton, on 04/08/2009, -11/+152everybody bookmark this as an example of Digg power user duplicate spam.
- rasser, on 04/09/2009, -2/+132It was the pixel at 186x113 specifically that gave it away for me. http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/5262/thepixelsn.jpg

- livintoolive, on 04/09/2009, -3/+80Really? I didn't realize the 3 of them don't naturally stand next to each other with white floral arrangements separating them.
- thebraineater, on 04/09/2009, -5/+56yeah. It's definitely not supposed to be a statement about excessive photoshopping (especially on celebrities) or anything. /s
- Paxinner, on 04/08/2009, -2/+52This is Clearly Photoshopped.

- whiledo, on 04/09/2009, -4/+49@Hoboking333: Turns out YOU missed the point. The photoshop bits are someone else's graffiti over the original ad:
http://i.gizmodo.com/5130163/photoshopped-subway-a ...
So yes, the graffiti is a critique on using photoshopping in ads, which is what Zippo was posting about (rightly or wrongly) in the first place. - Rodik, on 04/08/2009, -1/+46you sir... need to do a little research
http://digg.com/d1hsh0 - atlasdugged, on 04/07/2009, -13/+54notice no graffiti!!

- MeccaOfManhood, on 04/09/2009, -8/+35Really, who gives a *****? I'm amazed at what makes the front page of digg these days.
- UselessTrivia, on 04/09/2009, -5/+32Leave Britney Alone!

- Mizzike, on 04/09/2009, -7/+29I dugg you down, but I think a good hearty, but friendly, "***** you" is in order anyway. :-) Zippo makes a great point.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -3/+25Plus you can totally tell from the pixels...
- K4Lic0, on 04/09/2009, -0/+20What would bookmarking this do? There are tons of power users duplicates on the front page every day.
- liljay2k, on 04/09/2009, -0/+19I see dead pixels.
- feelmypimphand, on 04/09/2009, -0/+17or add a layer of baby gravy
- 33PercentGod, on 04/09/2009, -0/+15I'm a slave for you + mute = fantastic.
- Atex55, on 04/09/2009, -2/+17I agree with Zippo in that Photoshop is not the devil tool people sometimes make it out to be, it is often overused but that is the peoples fault, not the program. The "graffiti" of the tool bars open in the picture is a jab at Photoshop saying that it isn't needed and calling attention to the fact that it was used for those pictures. You can take it as just a joke, because it is funny and creative, but it does have some meaning and message behind it, which is what Zippo was talking about.
- Deeh, on 04/09/2009, -3/+17YO DAWG I HEARD YOU LIKE PHOTOSHOP....
- lettruthout, on 04/08/2009, -0/+14apparently it is graffiti - see the Rodik's link below.

- arizona01, on 04/09/2009, -4/+15Or mask out her face.
- realpolitik, on 04/09/2009, -1/+10Or bevel and emboss her...ah nevermind.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+9it takes a ***** to acvtually think that this is an advertisement that was put up by the company, rather than what is basically vandalism to an existing ad.
- Thumper13, on 04/09/2009, -27/+36Get a hold of yourself Zippo. You aren't some lofty artist. You're a graphic artist. It's just like any job. You do mundane tasks you were trained to do day after day.
Photoshop is out of control in this world. The phony worship over unrealistic looking people is tiring.
This is a funny thing. Just relax.
Can someone graphic artist me up some positive diggs? I'm about to have the opposite. - hcaandersen, on 04/09/2009, -1/+10Look in the mirror buddy.
- nepidae, on 04/09/2009, -1/+9Photoshop is just a tool, however so are most of the people who way over shop photos. Nothing wrong with fixing a blemish (whether photo artifact or skin problem), but smudge tooling women into unbelievable shape then saying that is what people should look like is just ***** up, and is detrimental to society imo.
- floppytaco, on 04/09/2009, -0/+8Dugg for baby gravy.
