- alceria, on 10/12/2007, -0/+48My fingers are hurting just thinking about all the allen-wrenching that will require.
- AdebisiTheGamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26I bought an entire cube van full of Ikea furniture when I got married.
Every single peice has outlasted everything I bought from so called premium furniture stores.
I had to put it together myself, and it costs about a third of the price, and outlasted everything else in the house.
Forgive me if I do not agree with those saying Ikea is "cheaply made".
They do have budget lines, but if you buy a budget line, guess what? You get budget furniture. Ikea makes some really good stuff.
I would have more faith in an Ikea built home then I would have in a home built by any of those contractor conmen that thrive up here in the North. - thunderer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Yeah, but there's always one little piece missing after all is said and done.
- garfonzo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I've heard these homes are actually really good quality and very well priced
- washingtonydc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"insert tab a into slot b"
Ikea instructions don't have any written directions. - thoughtudied999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9rofl I just bought a computer desk and a lounge chair from IKEA recently, that one hit close to home.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Well, since I've never even seen an IKEA catalog (except on "Fight Club"), much less their vaunted product, I'll just keep buying Walmart flat-packed particle board/masonite product. Walmart's local, right?
- decepticrat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It might have something to do with the fact that Kevin Rose was the second person to digg this story. Adds a lot of weight to the post and also exposes it to a lot more people's radar.
But I'm not saying this post is *****... - signal15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Interestingly enough, Ikea originally started out doing prefab homes and discontinued them when they figured out furniture business was more profitable. There are still quite a few Ikea homes standing in Sweden.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think you've missed just how expensive houses are in the UK
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Agreed, I've read some good things about BoKlok and would love to see these available in the U.S. It's time we said goodbye to McMansions and started living smarter. BoKlok specifically may not be your cup of tea, but the concept is a step in the right direction.
- lowerlogic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Sounds a lot like Linux.

Here ya go:
http://digg.com/how - TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7That cheap furniture made the founder the 4th richest person in the world, which is surprising. :P
- aratika, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"Boklok"?
What about "Chavpad?" - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Yeah, but there's always one little piece missing after all is said and done." - thunderer
That usually seems to be the case with build-it-yourself furniture, but I've never had this happen to me with IKEA stuff. Which is amazing really. - moltar2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ikea get some of their stuff made in China and India, but they do follow fair trade and ensure that nobody is exploited and that are the wages are adequate.
- williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A $40 drill-driver from the Home Depot is the required if you are doing anything but the most trivial Ikea setup. BTW, they make great office furniture. Steel frames under the desk surfaces, so you can sit on them, and nice chairs for a fraction of the cost of the cheapest cubicle furniture, and most software people hate being cubicle veal.
- jknevitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Quix: check this out for prefab producers here in the US: http://www.fabprefab.com/fabfiles/fablisthome.htm
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Cordless drill + Allen head bit (or cut a piece off the wrench they give you.)
You're welcome. - sachmanb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I am Jack's lack of supirse.
- miquonranger031, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You do know that this has been public since more than 4 years ago, right?
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I find IKEA furniture assembly incredibly soothing and therapeutic. As a technical writer, the utter lack of any written instructions is like a balm on my brain.
I wonder if I can get work to pay for an IKEA house on the grounds that assembling it, as a form of therapy, would be cheaper than the insurance for a shrink. - theboohi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Don't worry! If you plow through a wall you can just pick up and assemble a new house.
- aratika, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5More here: http://jetsongreen.typepad.com/jetson_green/modern/index.html
"The houses planned for Gateshead cost about £120,000 - £150,000. Ikea priced the units specifically to target households earning roughly £15,000 - £30,000 a year, and they're excited to have a modern, environmentally-friendly, affordable living space. One bedroom flats are about 46 square meters and two bedroom flats are 58 square meters."
SO...around £260 ($516 US) per sqft.
Sorry to bubble pop Digg Hippies - but this is still way above the $/sf for conventional, site assembled housing. In this US - this is around $100/sf. And you already can't afford that.
Anyway - if you're interested in manufactured housing in the US (and fine design) - check out this:
http://www.thedwellhome.com/ - akkuma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4My family has been in the juvenile furniture business longer than most people have been alive on digg. The problem with furniture today is that nearly all of it is coming out of china made with inferior woods at premium prices, they are made of inferior woods at low prices, or they are made fairly well at premium prices. Unless you get an honest person, know about furniture, willing to spend the money, etc. furniture today will not last. I've never personally had IKEA anything, so I don't know much about it. I do know though that generally if you can't afford all solid wood/nearly all solid wood furniture that the quality of the furniture is really subpar for what you pay for.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They look pretty flimsy. I don't think they'd be in any hurricane states like Florida.
- tech70a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Kit homes have been around for years. For reference: Sears Modern Homes. (long since discontinued, but they WERE here in the US)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sears_Modern_Homes
Half of my neighborhood lives in homes that were brought in on the railroad and assembled by the homeowners. By todays standards, they all lack insulation and decent windows, as well as a solid foundation. Of course most of them have been added onto or at least upgraded in the past few decades.
One thing about the US is the government has so many building permits and regulations that building a kit home yourself might not be worth the hassle. But every town or city has their own requirements. I say forget these things, lets all build geodesic domes - do it once, do it right, and live happily ever after. - anteyekon4myst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ah! Just what we need, more homes without any personality. I'm a big fan of IKEA, love that whole affordable economies of scale thing...but other than the way the neighborhood is arranged, I think that is some of the blandest architecture I've ever seen.
- sensia3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"stylish, efficient and affordable housing"
The only word missing from the description is durable. Well, IKEA and durability is kinda oil and water anyway. - killtherebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some people care about what their furniture looks like.
- tommyvercetti, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5We already have this in the US. It's called trailer homes.
- Zero123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's so funny...their apartments look like small, beach town San Diego, circa 1980!
- galore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"The houses planned for Gateshead cost about £120,000 - £150,000. Ikea priced the units specifically to target households earning roughly £15,000 - £30,000"
Huh? Do they have special miracle mortgages in the UK or do the British only work to have a roof over the head ???
I can't imagine only making $30k/year and paying the mortgage for a $240k house. How does that work, financially?? Hello foreclosure... - williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Around Boston, Bernie & Phil's is crap. Jordan's is crap. Bob's is crap. Unless you are shopping at a woodworker's shop like Dovetail or Thos. Moser, or high-end Crate & Barrel or Domain, you get crap. Even the moderate priced stuff at Crate & Barrel is no better than Ikea. Ikea ain't crap, and the prices are excellent.
- iliketogurn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For Galor ->

Yes, we do. Average yearly wage is about £25k and average houses prices are creeping over £200k. Very bad if you’re a first time buyer and haven’t built up any equity on a previous property. Even worse fi you consider that those earning above average are more likely to commute and are now buying up property in rural locations where the average wages are far lower.
So much for a socialist left wing government! - signal15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Flat Pak House is awesome. They run about $200/sq ft. It's about double the average, but they are very sweet. One just sold for $1 million out on Lake Minnetonka (in MN). I wanted it. :(
- DebbilsAdvocate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If it was on Lake Minnetonka, then the house is only worth about $100K. The rest is land value.
- rangutangen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Finally... Sweden über alles! :D
- Auto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Galore
How do you think America has been operating for the last 10 years? When the Fed lowered the interest rates and every gullible ass fell for a low ARM, you bet there are going to be problems ahead. Our banks and lenders seem to have no problem with giving out any sized loan so long as you can fog a mirror... - RoyHobbs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5how is it all the ***** you submit get front page??
- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Um, It doesn't. Check my submit page - I have ons of articles that never make it to double digits, much less the front page.
- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4 Oh, and it comes with a furniture voucher, too.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2put wheels on them and wait for tornadoes.
the big question is..will nature/god/spahgettimonster be able to tell the difference between a proper trailer and a fake ikea one!
just go ahead and smite anyways :) - booksoutloud, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2this is kinda cool.
- helinism, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I thought IKEA was for those who lacked personality or any sense of style... Now they are building homes also? Great, didn't we already have prefabs after WW2, what happened to those?
- gulmargha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i suppose that would translate as "jock-block" in american. your chav is our abercrombie and fitch
- Sargasso_C, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cold climate housing, doesn't need to look good from the outside, I suppose.
- djauto23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0At least you have the intelligence to recognize that it is crap. Most people up here in Norway doesn't.
- CodyBrown, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Well designed modular housing has a lot of potential but those houses look horrible.
