Bring bad design to justice!
design-police.org — This will finally give me something to do during my commute.
- 1068 diggs
- digg it
- trammell, on 01/16/2008, -4/+35Someone please turn these into spray paint stencils.
- Lutremi, on 01/16/2008, -3/+43Is that...a GIF?
- AuroraAlpha, on 01/16/2008, -0/+11Yes, it is.
- rauz, on 01/16/2008, -4/+13This is a good place to use a GIF, imho. I'd be irritated if it was a JPG although a PNG or PDF(!) would be best.
- rauz, on 01/16/2008, -4/+9Never mind. It had a PDF download link, my bad.
- ufia, on 01/16/2008, -1/+23You can stop boycotting GIF now, the patent has expired.
Sincerely,
The internetz - RockinRoel, on 01/16/2008, -0/+6Of course, they only used 2 colors (+ a bit of anti-aliasing), so optimized GIF is smallest and nicest. (PNG is slightly bigger) They've got PDF, so I hope those are vector graphics. SVG would be ideal for web viewing, but it isn't widely applied yet.
- protiek, on 01/16/2008, -3/+1Who cares
- solid12345, on 01/16/2008, -1/+5Why do many people hate on GIF's? I always found using a JPEG to be the lazy man's way.
- limezor2, on 01/16/2008, -4/+9Someone, please start making these. I would buy 2 dozens on the spot.
- Thayin, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3How about you buy a printer instead.
- derekivey, on 01/16/2008, -3/+4Anyone got a mirror?
- someone173406, on 01/16/2008, -5/+18I still like this one.
http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=57095598&s ...- Haiz, on 01/16/2008, -3/+7Stop.
Hammertime. - stalefries, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2Now I really want some sticker paper to print on. Does flickr sell prints on stickr paper?
- Haiz, on 01/16/2008, -3/+7Stop.
- qbify, on 01/16/2008, -3/+5I will definitely be using this.
- limezor2, on 01/16/2008, -3/+12If I could order stickers like this, I would do it IMMEDIATELY.
- darkgreystar, on 01/16/2008, -5/+3mirror, please?
- Hoshnasi, on 01/16/2008, -1/+10Do want Ascii art copy of this image to paste in code reviews.
- rauz, on 01/16/2008, -0/+6Especially kerning of the monospace fonts :P
- boyblitz, on 01/16/2008, -19/+3Thats pretty offensive. Im guessing you some loser typesetter. I agree some designs are bad but i would never insult anothers work. You could easily stick many of these on david carsons work but isn't he a well known loved designer (well i hate him but admire the rule breaking back in the day)
- boyblitz, on 01/16/2008, -3/+3oh but otherwise, good little concept.
- JustinHorne, on 01/16/2008, -3/+4That 404ed as fast as Engadgets servers this morning.
- giveer, on 01/16/2008, -0/+7Actually, it 500'd. Hit refresh, works fine for me. (loaded 4 times to to be sure)
- jaymcconville, on 01/16/2008, -4/+14I think the logo design in awesome. The best is the huge "WIDOW". They need an orphan though.
- DanaLynn86, on 01/16/2008, -3/+1It amuses me that people have buried your comment.
/dugg - ohhoe, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2They have the orphan! There are 5 pages of different ones, not just one.
- DanaLynn86, on 01/16/2008, -3/+1It amuses me that people have buried your comment.
- DesignEx, on 01/16/2008, -2/+3That Error 500 page is definitely a candidate for a bad design if I've ever seen one.
- darkecho, on 01/16/2008, -3/+3Probably one of the nicest 500 pages ive seen.
- vonskippy, on 01/16/2008, -12/+5There must be any easier way to announce you're gay (not, to quote Jerry Seinfeld, that there's anything wrong with that).
- ummmmm, on 01/16/2008, -12/+2Uh pdf files? No thank you.
- katrayun, on 01/16/2008, -1/+10So, in order to police bad design I have to burn out my eye sockets?
- boyblitz, on 01/16/2008, -6/+9Red its a bold warning color so should get results. Shame as a designer i hate guys like this, and people your all losers for digging me down but what i say is true.
- noahhoward, on 01/16/2008, -2/+1See how far you get by telling everyone who works for you that they're all winners.
- RockinRoel, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1boyblitz, I largely agree, but you couldn't you have been a little less offensive and grammatically correct? Thank you. I'm not a grammar nazi, I just don't like things that aren't legible at first sight.
- boyblitz, on 01/16/2008, -6/+9Red its a bold warning color so should get results. Shame as a designer i hate guys like this, and people your all losers for digging me down but what i say is true.
- Emused, on 01/16/2008, -4/+1Their server has been Dugg.
- Karmavs, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4REALLY? that would explain why I'm here on it's digg pageā¦
- crapmatic, on 01/16/2008, -0/+13Need a "this graffiti sucks" sticker. I'd have to buy a case of them to put on trains.
- icexe, on 01/16/2008, -1/+2i am so going to use this at work!
- GarrettB, on 01/16/2008, -6/+2What the hell is this? lol
- centran, on 01/16/2008, -5/+4A lot of these are useful. However, some of the ones about text/font/typefacing are getting to be picky. Dare I say... you might have an ad that comic sans works in. Oh noes!
And then they have different labels for kerning and tracking! Get over yourself.
The double spacing is what pisses me off the most. Hello! We are using modern fonts, not typewriters. You don't need to double space.- Karmavs, on 01/16/2008, -2/+1I (hope) think they meant double line spacing?
- stalefries, on 01/16/2008, -1/+4No, they're talking about hitting the space bar twice after the end of a sentence.
- Karmavs, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2inside I know that, but I'd like to keep at least some small hope alive
- stalefries, on 01/16/2008, -1/+4No, they're talking about hitting the space bar twice after the end of a sentence.
- omaryak, on 01/16/2008, -0/+16"Dare I say... you might have an ad that comic sans works in"
No. Never. You're fired. - inkblog, on 01/22/2008, -0/+0Amen to that. One of my first disputes with my husband was after I said anyone who uses comic sans is either incompetent or devoid of style . . . Yeah, turns out his mother wrote a cookbook in comic sans. I still stand by my words.
- Karmavs, on 01/16/2008, -2/+1I (hope) think they meant double line spacing?
- snarkleclackers, on 01/16/2008, -1/+20I find it ironic that one of the stickers says "Helvetica was an unimaginative choice", considering the entire page is done in Helvetica...
- Karmavs, on 01/16/2008, -3/+5I'm not sure, but I think that it's actually even worse. Arial. (look at the a)
EDIT - nope, helvetica, it's just bad anti aliasing. Damn. Digg me down- joshuajonah, on 01/16/2008, -1/+1Unfortunately guys, helvetica and arial are all we 'web designers' have to work with. Just be thankful it's not times.
- Karmavs, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3Not in this sites case. The only actual 'text' on the web page is the microscopic legal copy at the bottom. They could have used any font they wanted.
- Halsfield, on 01/16/2008, -1/+0its an image, images arent limited in anyway except by the person who made the image and what they wanted. Maybe the sticker about helvetica was intentionally ironic?
- Karmavs, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1I think if they were going for that, they would have used Comic Sans
- joshuajonah, on 01/16/2008, -1/+1Unfortunately guys, helvetica and arial are all we 'web designers' have to work with. Just be thankful it's not times.
- joshuajonah, on 01/16/2008, -2/+2Unfortunately guys, helvetica and arial are all we 'web designers' have to work with. Just be thankful it's not times.
- b3mus3d, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3These are GIF images. They can use any damn font they like.
- brownspank, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2There's also Lucida, Trebuchet, and Georgia. You should try them sometime.
- Ramaon, on 01/16/2008, -0/+10Bury me down if you want, but I still think Helvetica Neue can be a pretty good choice, considering it has a billion variations.
Unimaginative choice, maybe, but I would still pick it over a million decorative fonts on any day. Decorative fonts are the cancer that killed design.- bryceman111, on 01/16/2008, -0/+8I think if done carefully, Helvetica can work in just about anything... If you want to see a documentary about the font and lots of designers who think you should use it in every design or none, check out: -- http://www.helveticafilm.com --
- Smaulz, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1Great film for design geeks. Thought it was pretty interesting.
- RockinRoel, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3I like Helvetica Neue too, and I don't think Helvetica is really an unimaginative choice. Comic Sans MS is an unimaginative (and bad) choice.
As for web: Arial, Helvetica, Lucida Grande, Lucida Sans Unicode, Verdana and Trebuchet MS are all OK and are cross platform enough. Do remember to type font-family: Helvetica, Arial and not font-family: Arial, Helvetica.

- Halsfield, on 01/16/2008, -5/+6maybe im out of the loop or something, what exactly are these for? what kind of design?
- Kathan, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2bad advertising on the subway?
- openartist, on 01/16/2008, -0/+7If you were a designer or someone familiar with design and typography you'd get the jokes. There are some common trendy design elements (like using helvetica, etc.) that sometimes you'd like to say "dude, that was really unoriginal." A lot of the terms on the stickers (kern, widow, hyphenation) are used in typography and would be useful for proofing a design job or for fun on ads and billboards in the subway.
- RockinRoel, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2I would classify Helvetica as minimalistic/simplistic (or budget), but not unoriginal.
- Halsfield, on 01/16/2008, -1/+6thanks for clearing that up openartist.
in other news:
im getting dugg down for asking a question, im an awful person, i think ill throw myself down a well. -_-
- 4d669, on 01/16/2008, -1/+2I can think of a least 5 stickers that need to be made and pasted on the logo.
- SLockhart, on 01/16/2008, -3/+6Design nazis stifle creativity.
- GalacticRerun, on 01/16/2008, -0/+0Bad spelling and low res images are creative now?
- hmmdar, on 01/16/2008, -1/+2wow i need some of these but for software design for work lol...
- Karmavs, on 01/16/2008, -4/+61About 11 of those could be plastered on the site itself - these 11: http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/3984/designpoli ...
- stalefries, on 01/16/2008, -0/+7I wish I could digg you once for each one.
- nonstop87, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3I dugg him for you. :D
- Bradillac, on 01/16/2008, -1/+2Thank you. I can't stand Helvetica...
- rootneg2, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3Although "Turn of CAPSLOCK" and "break the grid" are definitely silly design complaints in this case. "This has no personality" is kind of a judgement call.
Definitely agree about the logo, microscope, and font at least- Karmavs, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4true - but more stickers were better
- rootneg2, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1true
- Karmavs, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4true - but more stickers were better
- ChrisLondon, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1Even though I found the original post quite a good idea, I have to agree with this.
- stalefries, on 01/16/2008, -0/+7I wish I could digg you once for each one.
- theRobot, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4These are amazing!!!!
- jeffyjones, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2Someone should call scalability-police.com.
- CrimsonFlash, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3I laughed out loud when I saw "WIDOW"
Haha. I am printing this on sticky-back paper for sure. :) - centexu, on 01/16/2008, -6/+0this sucks.
- ChrisLondon, on 01/16/2008, -0/+9'Comic Sans is illegal' - Brilliant.
- an0n1m0us, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1I need the same concept applied to 'industrial design' or architecture, civic planning/infrastructure and consumer goods
- robotderek42, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1Needs a "Logo too big" sticker.
- Tibin05, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1The logo looks like a tube of lipstick, then I kept staring at it and it finally made sense, it's one of those lights that's on top of the old police cars.
- gkiltz, on 01/16/2008, -0/+0But only if they knew at the time of construction that it was bad!
The Titanic, for instance, looked unsinkable based on what was known at the time.
The WTC looked uncollapseable at the time it was built! - wfiupublicradio, on 01/16/2008, -0/+0love the "style over content"-- if that isn't the attitude of a page designer or what.
- solid12345, on 01/16/2008, -1/+1Bleh ***** the rules I got enough of that in my design courses at college. This is a nation of freedom!
- Nintendumb, on 01/17/2008, -0/+0Someone needs to police that logo...
It looks more like an X-Ray of a marker cap. - jggube, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1"Please dont' use WordArt (tm)" -- Classic!
- wildetech, on 01/19/2008, -0/+0totally hearing you on the comic sans
http://www.servicedflats.co.uk - INDhandicrafts, on 01/23/2008, -0/+0excellent
- slherzog, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1Most designers need to be more critical of their own work rather than the work of others.
Jealous hypocrites. : ) - redesignme, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0update your bad design to http://www.redesignme.cm
