- mandarin, on 07/08/2009, -2/+60A good celebrity who actually cares. A fine actor too.
- novenator, on 07/08/2009, -1/+30Eco houses rock in general, but storm safe ones to boot? That's awesome.
- Janinco, on 07/08/2009, -1/+27Good for him!
- diggB, on 07/08/2009, -1/+18Saying "This place is the Pitts" will now be considered a compliment.
- ManUnitdFan, on 07/08/2009, -0/+15The trouble isn't the location, it's the infrastructure. New Orleans didn't flood because of the hurricane; it flooded because of crappy levees.
- ECPDancer, on 07/08/2009, -0/+12People who live in New Orleans live there because they want to, and I think Brad Pitt is just helping them to have affordable green housing that is storm safe. Nice to see an actor "walking the walk" instead of just a lot of talk and showing up at charity events to get their picture taken.
- Barackalypse, on 07/08/2009, -7/+18Here's an idea, why not spend the same money and build more non-hurricane proof houses in a place that doesn't get hurricanes and isn't (or won't) be under sea level anytime soon?
- pacerx, on 07/08/2009, -1/+12Yeah, maybe they can move all of the port traffic to an inland city!
The location of NO with respect to other shipping lanes probably saves more in transportation costs than what the costs it incurs from weather are. - assasinine, on 07/08/2009, -0/+9I'm from the area, it works out all-right. Flooding is your main issue.

Also, try digging a hole in South Louisiana. You'll hit water after digging six inches. This is why we have no basements, or bury our dead. - chris4404, on 07/08/2009, -0/+9I've gone back and forth on this issue myself. In the end I feel New Orleans heritage and unique culture is worth saving from the gulf, besides it'd be a sad day when Mardi Gras isn't possible down Bourbon street.
- Broomie, on 07/08/2009, -0/+8Do you really think he was being serious?
- ManUnitdFan, on 07/08/2009, -0/+7@roberekson:
The Netherlands seem to be doing pretty ok for themselves. If they can do it for an entire country, I fail to see why we can't. - nachochease, on 07/08/2009, -0/+7It's good to see big name actors who don't see themselves as being better than everyone else and who actually care about making a difference, especially amongst those who are less fortunate then they are.
- jerryjamesstone, on 07/08/2009, -5/+11A house for every adopted kid?
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -11/+17Lost your home in an area situated below sea level on one of the most hurricane hit coasts in the country? No problem, now you can move back there! Don't let that 'hurricane season' get you down - now you can live in a 3 story house so next august when the first floor is totally underwater, think of it as a free pool upgrade!
- Philbert, on 07/08/2009, -0/+6Yes it's good to see that in a time when many people have essentially forgotten about Katrina.
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -0/+6ReNew Orleans
- Diggnabbit, on 07/08/2009, -0/+5Where do you live, Sodade? California? How are those earthquakes treating you?
- KahRahTay, on 07/08/2009, -0/+5sounds to me like you're trying to push more big government spending! you too good to swim in your house? socialist!1!!
- crilen007, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4I'd actually rather not trust you. Most likely you didn't even read the article.
- Tenoq, on 07/09/2009, -0/+4@ ManUnitdFan:
The Netherlands also have a working tax system which makes that kind of government-built infrastructure easy to maintain. The Dutch have a much more socialist approach than the US - although I wouldn't say they're 'socialist'. But taxing is far more progressive and the common good is a higher priority. - kinseyincanada, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4everyplace has environmental issues you have to deal with, San Francisco has earthquakes, Texas, Oklahoma has tornados. New York has Monster invasions, DC has alien invasions, you just have to deal with.
- Taiyoryu, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4Where are the price estimates?
- assasinine, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3Telephone poles, or pilings are typically used. It is very sturdy when driven into the ground deep enough. Houses are even built in marshland using this technique.
Also, downtown New Orleans does have tall buildings, if you look at a picture of the skyline. That is an actual part of the city with some bedrock deeper below the ground. - JohnnySoftware, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2I "like" the way the the SUV has been backed into the tight squeeze between the posts helping support the yellow home. In the ideal world that would always work. Looks good on paper But could easily be taken out if homeowner has had a few drinks, 15 or 16 year old learning to drive backs in at an angle instead of straight, etc. Plus, if the house falls down for any reason - it is taking your vehicle with it, isn't it?
The most attractive exterior to me is the Billes Architecture (US) entry. The balcony is a nice touch. The material looks good. The overall shape seems pleasant to the eye too. - assasinine, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3It's underutilized space as is, since the house needs to be elevated. Some houses in the area cover/skirt this bottom floor and do use it as an unfinished garage/shed.
- jmcneilly, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3Who are they trying to kid? It's obviously for Zombies. Block the stairs and you are safe.
- IllBeBack, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3Like we all have to pay when that 9.5 earthquake ***** the ***** out of San Francisco or L.A.? And it's not just likely, it will definitely eventually happen.
***** that. Anybody living in those cities should ***** move right ***** now. - assasinine, on 07/08/2009, -1/+4That's like saying architectural models of a complex in Beijing with little Chinese people is racist. Have you ever been to the Ninth Ward?
- poracious, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3Newer 'Leans?
- funk49, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3When is the last time the Netherlands has had a monsoon/hurricane hit it...or some kind of event that would change the level of water being held by said levees?
- NoNotReally, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3That guy is caring AND practical. now that's effective philanthropy.
Not just.... blindly throwing cash at something. - pacerx, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3Lol well let's just not have the port because people might die in a hurricane. And let's not farm in the plains because tornadoes are common there.
***** happens. You can die from natural disasters anywhere. - crilen007, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3What?
That doesn't even make sense... read the article ffs. - dancantone, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3I've always liked Brad...not for the obvious reasons but because to be such an A list celebrity he's a real cool guy.
I remember Jen saying back in the day all he liked to do was "hang out with friends in their backyard and smoke pot and ride motorbikes"...YEEEAAAHH! - ImTheMostWapWap, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3This is old news in New Orleans. And to everybody that wonders why anyone would go back there, you should visit. Frankly, there just aren't that many cities in America that are as cultured or easy-going. Sure it's a little dangerous and the city is susceptible to hurricanes, but if you ever get a chance to stay there, you'd understand it's a small price to pay for the frame of mind. And your trip to Bourbon Street doesn't count. Go enjoy the ***** city.
Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans? - sKizZz, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2Sigma Chi for you =]
- JoeSpaceTime, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2Yeah, and the death toll doesn't matter either. Yeah! Transportation cost savings! Woohoo.
/sarcastic comment is sarcastic - Crosshare, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2Sooo, are garages considered not environmental friendly or something? It seemed to be the reoccurring theme to have a car port.
- roberekson, on 07/08/2009, -1/+3"The trouble isn't the location, it's the infrastructure. New Orleans didn't flood because of the hurricane; it flooded because of crappy levees."
...because it's built next to a lake, but lower than the water of said lake.
It's like running across a freeway at rush hour...eventually you'll get hit. - LoopyChew, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2@IllBeBack: New York has Sex and the City. Isn't that enough monster invasion for you?!
- javaco, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2I'd choose the dutch design. The Dutch know how to handle water and storm.
- IllBeBack, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2Yeah, I'm thinkin' that New York is just about due for another big Monster invasion. It's been awhile.
- shaqazoolu, on 07/08/2009, -8/+10I like how most of the human models in the thumbnails are black. Brad Pitt is such a racist.
- SmokenJoe, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2Shame they did not link to www.makeitrightnola.org the houses look well built not the typical crap that the government pays for that falls apart in the next storm. The most eco friendly thing you can do is to make things to last there is enough garbage and rubble already.
- marktastic, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2Liar, they had Cloverfield.
- iagainsti, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2damn. what a stand up guy.
- JohnnySoftware, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1Watch "Real Genius" sometime.
- mrwoody, on 07/08/2009, -2/+3I wouldn't mind to live in any of them... except for the location, maybe.
- satori3000, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1storm safe? they're frickin DRAWINGS.... how is anyone supposed to live in them? </zoolander rant>
