- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -6/+232I wish I hadn't read the public reaction to the photo..
- tigerdyr, on 10/12/2007, -7/+143I have a question. Is hell the warm steamy spot, or the minus 30 degrees celcius cold ice?
I'm having difficulties deciding. - daborg, on 10/12/2007, -5/+119"Wow picture is nice, however hell, to the left is not quit a good picture to repersent what hell really looks like. You should make it a scaryer picture to let people now that thats not where they “want to end up”"
WTF? Are there actually people like this? Holy crap... - Zybex, on 10/12/2007, -11/+119I blame Alanis Morissette.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+57http://www.landscapedvd.com/wallpaperblog/index.php/archives/93
Read this to understand the history of that moment - and the public reaction to that photograph - jperdomo, on 10/12/2007, -10/+57"One of the most ironic Environmental moments in the history of Photography"
Wow talk about an overstatement. This picture as ok. It is neither heaven or hell. Just a lucky shot. Not really even worth a digg. - ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -4/+50tigerdvr - since my manager at work said they won't give employees free X360s until Hell has frozen over and I still don't have one, I'm guessing Hell is the left side.
- 2L84ME, on 10/12/2007, -8/+51Maybe he meant 'iconic'?
A simple typo, no need to go into great detail. - Raziekiel, on 10/12/2007, -13/+55If we use words without knowing the meaning, than language has lost it's point has it not?
- vbsurfer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44Great photo... but man, heaven and hell could have been just as easily represented through looking at the comments made.
- GoddamedGeorge, on 10/12/2007, -33/+73Oh please. The comments at that site are too much. Those biblethumpers ALWAYS have to twist things around to their likings. There's nothing at all "mystical" or "spiritual" about that picture. It's steam, dead trees and some sky. What IDIOTS!
- pagit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41Wait a minute,
Shouldn't there be a wall that divides heaven and hell to keep the ilegal imigrants from coming over to hell from heaven to work at jobs that citizens of hell don't want to do? - Catchpen, on 10/12/2007, -8/+44Maybe he meant "testicle"? a simple typo, no need to go correction crazy
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+40Why is it that people quoting scripture ALWAYS USE CAPITAL LETTERS?
It's like their god is always screaming at them or something.
very cool pic though - lordcat, on 10/12/2007, -8/+40I was expecting something much better... like... say... a molten lava flow next to a frozen landscape...
...artisticaly and photographicaly, it's great and all... but as a representation of 'heaven and hell'... no... at best it's hell freezing over... - Idealistic, on 10/12/2007, -6/+37"THOSE WHO ACCEPT, AND TRUST IN JESUS CHRIST ARE ON THEIR WAY TO LONG-LASTING ETERNITY WITH THE LORD, HOWEVER, THOSE WHO DECIDE TO STRAY AWAY, AND DISBELIEVE GOD WILL BE BANISHED INTO THE PITS OF HELL."
My favorite excerpt from one of the comments. Im glad to see that loving example of inclusion and acceptance seeing some recognition. Makes me want to be a christian all the more... - JavertHolmes, on 10/12/2007, -6/+34God invented lowercase fonts only after Adam and Eve were born. Before then it was a whole lot of yelling.
The concept of zero was also created after God realized how much money Adam had left in his wallet after going on his first date with Eve. - awfulsara, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29Fer the love of Pete. Knees are jerking left and right.
As the photographer, let me tell you a little bit more about this image. This was taken a few years ago, in Yellowstone near the Gardiner, Montana, entrance, on what was a very lovely and very typical winter day. It's about as un-"photoshopped" as it gets. Steam rolls over the lip of the rise and it was just a matter of waiting until the scene was split in two, letting the sun creep into the frame to create the flare, and taking the shot. I rather liked the effect and the title seemed fitting.
The "public reaction" where I first posted the shot on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/awfulsara/9229688/) had little to do with the title (cause I wasn't making a grand religious statement). Nor was it created (or even heavily edited) in Photoshop or anything else. Visit Yellowstone sometime in the winter. Scenes like this abound. My biggest complaint about the shot is the shadow noise, personally. It was just a cool moment, a good day, and a then amateur photographer in a lovely place. Sometimes I curse the day photoshop came about because when people see something they haven't seen before, they so often assume it's fakery, rather than straight up photography. Take it easy, diggers, I'm as aware of the photo's strengths and faults as anyone. - PhilH, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30I agree. This is nothing special in terms of photography. The composition is dull, and the colours are not well-balanced. Oh, and the lens flare looks amateurish. It's just a case of right place, right time.
It's a nice picture, but why is it on digg? I prefered this site when it was dedicated to news (And before I get blasted that I should block catagories I am not interested in, this is listed under technology/design, which I think is inaccurate). - miken32, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Wow, both the dvorak users in one thread. What are the odds?!
- skyhighrockets, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28Hey, Hell doesn't look half bad, I'll take it. ;)
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Considering it's a photograph you might have to blame nature
- bquigly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Those public reaction comments sound like photo critiques from a 5th grade art class.
- judsond, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Those comments are disturbing, it doesn't even seem like a religious site.
- jpbleuu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25why is this listed under technology?
- Pinhole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Well, the actual photo is here : http://www.flickr.com/photos/awfulsara/9229688/ and the actual artist (http://www.flickr.com/photos/awfulsara/) is not credited.
Why do I know this? I bid on this photo for an auction and my good friend http://www.flickr.com/photos/norby/ beat me out on it. - catmistake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Where's the irony? That's just the way I'd expect this phenomenon to present.
- daborg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16"Considering it's a photograph you might have to blame nature"
No... "Blame Canada!" - Medusausi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15so is the gray misty part purgatory?
- GuitaristTom, on 10/12/2007, -11/+23"Nice photo. This photo tells me that heaven is a wonderfull place and hell is a horrible place and its true. There’s Light and darkness, good and evil, love and hate, life and death, God and Satan, peace and kaos etc. What does light have in common with the dark. Does heaven and hell really exist? You bet."
Religious people suck at grammar and spelling. - ThankTheCheese, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12It's a nice photo, no doubt, but "one of the most ironic Environmental moments in the history of Photography" is grossly overselling it.
- dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Yes, language evolves over time, no that is NOT an excuse to misuse words that have perfectly good definitions. If someone is wrong, it's not an excuse to make the same mistake. You might as well say "I saw a mugging the other day, if one person can mug someone, it must be ok, therefore I can do it to."
- Ragzouken, on 10/12/2007, -15/+26And obviously no-one uses the dvorak layout where C and R just happen to be right next to each other...
- willowy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@wavey:
I don't think anyone has a problem with a slightly romanticized description. I think most of us have a problem with the raging wild-eyed exclamations of Biblical significance to the whole thing, the people who came in to quote passages from their favorite religious doctrine and preach like they're trying to impress Jerry Falwell.
Because, you know. CRAZY. - jbus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14An HDR version of this photo would be awesome.
- scuzzphut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Is 25 comments (and mostly one-liners) on a blog page considered "public reaction" these days ???
- Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Nice post. Sometimes I think they ought to just rename this place to Kneejerk and instead of thumbs up or down you'd have a kneejerk up or down.
- typo180, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@ daborg
agreed. Perfect example of totally missing the point of art in favor of some lame evangelical goal. (evangelical meaning the action, not the denomination) - daborg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I would agree with you guys, except this is the first comment in the discussion:
"Wow picture is nice, however hell, to the left is not quit a good picture to repersent what hell really looks like. You should make it a scaryer picture to let people now that thats not where they “want to end up”" - MrScience, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8IMHO Ragzouken shouldn't have been dug down; I was going to make the exact same observation (typing in Dvorak myself).
- willowy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I don't even know what to SAY about the public reaction to that. I mean-- wow, a lot of those people are very Christian, and wow, a lot of them have evidently never realized before that Hell is probably a bad place and Heaven probably a good one.
- Inglorion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yes, it looks nice, but nothing more. So "nice", in fact, that it looks artificial--which isn't good. I'd say the photo is more "strange" and "surreal" than beautiful.
- billymachine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@ Wavey: Ohhhh yeah, talk nerdy to me baby!
- SparrowsLair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4To paraphrase Terry Pratchett - sometimes a photo is just a photo
- Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Any statistician will tell you that a few random comments on an Internet blog does NOT constitute enough of a sampling to be called "public reaction." He'd probably laugh his head off at the suggestion.
But it doesn't matter. Just take the photo for what it is. - terrible0ne, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14this photo looks seriously photoshoped!
- GuitaristTom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Shouldn't there be a wall that divides heaven and hell to keep the ilegal imigrants from coming over to hell from heaven to work at jobs that citizens of hell don't want to do?"
so Mexico is heaven? - exobyte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5To "Language is not written in stone:"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosetta_stone
Watch your metaphors on digg.
As far as the song "Ironic," blame Canada!! - awfulsara, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hmmm, how about another question. Why is it that digg has so many armchair photography critics, many of whom wouldn't know a good or bad photograph if it bit them in the arse?
Of course there are better photos out there, many of them. There are also a good number of people who have purchased a print of this shot. There are likely many more people who have velvet Elvis paintings on their wall, or dogs playing poker, so popularity is hardly the best judge of quality.
"Anyone who actually does photography on a professional or semi-professional level will tell you that image is doctored. Many things give it away, not least of which is a dynamic range that is impossible to capture with any camera equipment or film in existence today."
Sigh. That anyone happens to be me. At the time, I was a dabbler in photography. It is now my sole source of income. As you can see, my little 10D didn't capture the full dynamic range, with much of the cloud blown out (pure white). You're welcome to take a look at the subsequent shot, taken just on the other side of the steam cloud: http://www.flickr.com/photos/awfulsara/9236804 It's rather a dull photo, really, but allows you to see more of the area.
To those who like it, thanks. I like it too. To those who see angels and demons coming out of the fog, you & I don't live on the same planet, but enjoy the ride. To those who find it utter tripe and those who are convinced it's doctored, there is little I can say to change your minds and I'm not terribly interested in trying. Perhaps you'll find another photo of mine you like better, or perhaps you will conclude that they are all utter tripe. Feel free to tell me either way, always interesting to hear what people think. The glorious part is that no one has to agree, eh? - crackintosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It is a great shot for a dual-screen wallpaper. I flipped it for the right screen, looks sweet!
