- Jensaarai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+50"with lavish suites, a ballroom, a shopping mall and a missile-defense system to ward off terrorists."
One of these things is not like the other... - gmprunner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+42Do they have a swimming pool?
And how's the view from your room? "Look honey, a beautiful view of the sharks eating a whale next door! Wanna grab a bite to eat? I feel like sea-food." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+40No one would go to the trouble of becoming a multimillionaire if it were only for the benefit of others. Humans are not perfect, selfless creatures.
- arkmtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33What a perfect setting for a live-action Sealab 2021!
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34The 2nd line merely adds to the naivety of the first line.
- Geekbeard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26"Wait....first things first, find the girl."
Don't fret. If you're rich enough to afford staying at this place, you'll have no trouble finding one in the plethora of gold-digging succubi. - raabco, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29"It's nice to see everyone taking my comment wrong. I'd imagine everyone jumped at the first sentence and failed to read the second one."
which was...
"Quite interesting where some peoples priorities are."
To which I say:
Not interesting at all. The vast majority of living organisms on this planet are almost completely egocentric. At the most, some care about their family unit, and no one beyond that. Due to a *very* limited amount of intelligence, you assume humans should always do what's right to benefit our species as a whole while possibly sacrificing themselves? What a fun little bubble you must live in! Please give me your dealer's number, since he seems to have been hooking you up with some really good *****. - jcaino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23the shame of this whole thing is that the government (US) has instilled such a fear in it's public that something like this needs to claim anti-terrorism measures...
as far as i know, it has never been reported that osama has bought decommissioned Russian subs...not to say it hasn't happened...but c'mon.
and how is an anti-missile system supposed to be anti-terrorist....we already know that there supposed 'terrorists' are willing to sacrifice themselves for their beliefs...walk in with a bomb in your suitcase....hello!
and 'terrorists' aren't the only ones...look at kamikaze pilots.
ah hell, digg me down. I'm drunk, rambling, and sick of the ***** scare tactics of the wonderful American government. - wastednightmare, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Yeah, and im sure the reef's gonna continue being that vibrant after they'e done building the bloody thing!!
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21A missile system? I'm sure the government would love that one. (on second thoughts, maybe they actually would - anything to promote the fear of "terrorists".)
- drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Missles WTF I would think torpedos
- sobriquet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Yeah, and Popular Science a few years ago said the US and Russia were planning to build a bridge over the Bering Sea. They have a credibility of a pickle.
An evil pickle. - Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15There'll be no accusations
Just friendly crustaceans
Under the sea! - voltree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13To the person on the moral high horse:
Here's a history lesson. For hundreds of thousands of years, disease was one of, if not the, main focus of pretty much every human on the planet. We came up with superstition, voodo, astrology, acupuncture, homeopathy and religeon (to name just a few). Life expectancy remained low. Then cultural leaders started travelling around and meeting other leaders of other cultures. They swapped novelty items. Thus capitalism was invented. Capitalism financed technology, which focussed and accelerated science. Voila, we now live over twice as long as we did before capitalism.
Morality matters, but it does not provide an excuse to bypass the truths of life, even if you find those truths distasteful. - ifoundgodot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Too bad nothing featured in PopSci ever actually happens...
- gmprunner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Let me guess..... a ballroom?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13am i the only one thinking about a real life sea-lab 2021? god i miss that show...

- KayinNasaki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Yes yes, let give all the money not being spent on essentials to medical research...
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Capitain Murphey.. are you there?
- maninblac1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Honeymoon, here i come.
Wait....first things first, find the girl. - gr8one, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I'm only writing this so I can later read my own writing and admire my intellect and wit.
- xipotec, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10While you bought your pc and internet you could have saved someone.
- blapierre, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14@alex.will
Funny thing is, the only way to become a multimillionaire is to create/do things that people find more valuable than money (ie. things that benefit others). Or steal. - reznorgr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9 Year 2008 , September 11 , Channel: CNN Subject : Breaking News
"A terrorist group camouflaged as a big shark , attacked and ruined the whole underwater hotel killing 1000 of fishes and 1 octopus"
- richpav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Did anyone else notice the rooms don't offer much in the way of privacy? I think the missile defense system will come more in handy to ward off peeping toms.
- 0crabby0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8This could never be built in the US.
Because a Shrimp boat would trawl over it and it'd be covered in nets.
*Yes I'm bitter a shrimp boat ran into my dock...lol* - firepowered, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8no blinds?
what happens if a diver swims pass? - Psych77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Did anyone notice that this proposed hotel does not include a missile defence system?
That's the Dubai hotel, not the Fiji hotel... - Chipsandsnacks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7How long till it spontaneously implodes?
- PimNL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I don't believe you can look this far in average seawater:
http://img.timeinc.net/popsci/images/2006/12/undersea_main_485.jpg - maddox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Sod the missiles, why didn't they just get some sharks with frickin' laser beams!
- bhavi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"The Hydropolis was a self-acclaimed 10-star, underwater hotel which was under construction in Dubai. However, as of November 2006, Hydropolis' launch has been cancelled, due to cost issues and concerns over the project's impact on marine life. Atlantis hotel, however, is being built and will open on the Palm Jumeirah Dubai in 2008. Only part submerged, it is primarily a 'marine experience' based on the myth of Atlantis. The several marine environments will include the Ambassador Lagoon, a several million gallon marine habitat which will be home to approximately 65,000 fish and ocean-dwelling animals."

Edit: not meant to be a reply - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7No Volume Adjustment Warning: but it's the site for this place
http://www.poseidonresorts.com/poseidon_flash.html - noouch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yes, imagine... glass breaks, millions of liters of water come pouring in at incredible pressure killing all current inhabitants within minutes. Holy crap that would be a great B-movie.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7They will have one huge electricity bill to illuminated underwater like the one showed in the animation.
- fabiolover2002, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6One time popular science told me that helicopters within the next two years will fly at mach speeds and lift millions of pounds! At the same time!
- Skab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Pretty neat idea but i'd hate to be the first person who felt a lil drip...
plus I can't wait till 50 years from now when these are the norm but they've been americanized and downgraded to earl's lake motel 59 credits an hour . - tekz0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6uhm, titanic, anyone?
- Ramtech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This leads to a great place to film a movie...
or if something goes wrong...film about it...
ya know.. being underwater and all.. sharks.... giant squids?... - iDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7just one word : BioShock !
- Smoove3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5a couple things bother me about this...
1 - Anything ever named Poseidon has never really turned out well...
2 - If there is a natural disaster, how would anyone be able to survive and get to the top?
I admit, the design is cool as can be... I would love to go down there and enjoy a day, but I doubt I'd spend any kind of extended 2 of 3 day stay, no way. This has disaster written all over it.
One tsunami and bye bye... - jcaino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6hey KMye...not over-anxious American bashing...
terrorism has been around for a damn long time
it's just never gotten the limelight that it's experiencing now until America sensationalized it. - jballer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6So they plan to construct this thing while preserving a coral reef within 10 feet of the windows? That'll be quite a feat.
Even if they build it, the biggest problem will be the threat of terrorists turning the "missile defense system" into a "WMD." - BatFreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Or perhaps the Poseidon Adventure?
- coaxus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's amazing - I can only imagine how much it'd cost to stay there.
- nerogtr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I cant imagine that any large scale underwater construction like that would be good for the sea life in the area. To make the hotel even worth building, it would need to be near some sort of scenic reef, which spells ecological disaster to me. Constuction near the reef would probably be extremely dangerous to that habitat. Even if they pulled it off, I can't imagine the reef coexisting with the structure for very long (although I admit I'm no marine biologist).
- benhere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4well if you believe an Al Gore we might all be living underwater soon enough
