I don't think you understand the purpose of having a computer. - namtellum, on 10/12/2007, -12/+73Want a cookie?
- dyebartdie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+45why would you even admit that lol
- krische, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35actually, all of my BSOD's have been due to driver conflicts.

What percentage of Windows users would you say WOULDN'T click on HugePeni0rParade.exe for $5 off dog hair growth formula?
History has shown probably less than half......sadly. - hydrosnowman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20ahh...brings back memories of when I had WindowsME

"On the last 10 years using Windows everyday - being a programmer and writing all kinds of software including hardware interfaces I have never seen a BSOD."
I used to write kernel drivers. I'm not sure if that's what you're referring to when you say, "hardware interfaces". However, if you've never seen a BSOD when writing drivers for Windows then you're just lying. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Everytime you tell that joke, a kitten dies. Please, think of the kittens :(
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17XP doesn't BSoD but this artcle is about BSoD through the ages... I remember some terrible days with 3.1, 95, and 98. Anyone who doesn't either is lying or had someone else fix their computer for them (or has never used Windows somehow).
- Darcy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I watched a video a few months ago with Mark Russinovich talking about BSODs and he gave a few stats about the causes:
From Microsoft's crash analysis database
(approx)
79% Are caused by 3rd party driver code
11% Are caused by hardware issues
2% Are caused by the kernel itself or other MS related code
8% Are unknown (memory too corrupted to tell)
Drivers:
65,000 unique driver - approx 25 new each day
240,000 Total drivers - approx 80 - 100 revised/day
Devices:
Over 1,400,000 distinct PnP ID's
approx 1,700 PnP ID's added everyday - redhatcat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12For anyone who thinks XP doesn't BSOD.
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Screen_of_Death
"By default, Windows XP is configured to save only a 64K minidump when it encounters a blue screen, and then to automatically reboot the computer."
XP does BSOD. It just doesn't hang around for photos. - trparky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Microsoft doesn't even want to admit that Windows ME existed along with Windows 98.

Prepare to be modded down for making an honest statement that conflicts with the beliefs of the Torvalds/Jobs lynchmob. - ckohler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9And before this there were Guru Meditations.
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9and how do you think they die?!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If you've never ran an anti-virus or anti-spyware program, how do you know you don't have a virus or spyware?

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"This movie is a real bummer. The plot goes nowhere and the special effects are lousy, but it still manages to fill you with an overwhelming sense of dread."
- HUKI365, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4In some ways, most of the time now days - using OSX and XP - I don't even make it to the blue screen. The computer just freezes. Damn memory leaks.
I miss the old BSOD. - Spampy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4How often did he start up/use the computer?
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Embrace: Perhaps it's only the -intelligent- people such as myself who actually took the time to disable the automatic silent reboot "feature" of XP, in the hopes of getting some sort of error message that might help debug the problem. Everyone else is just left wondering where their programs went.
For the record; I am a CS graduate. Windows does not like me. I use Linux on my main machine, so of course the XP machine gets resentful and has bluescreened on me several times in the past. Windows Does Not Like Me.
On the other hand, my flatmate seems to have no problems with XP, unless I enter the room or do something dangerous to his machine like doubleclick an .avi filename. He's managed to go through several failed attempts at running Linux on his own machine - I can't understand how he does it.
Different people just seem to have different "auras". Any CS major knows computing is 32% voodoo anyway. But calling people unintelligent just because they've witnessed XP's stability problems and you haven't? That's low. - posure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4KERNEL PANIC!
The only times that XP has blue screened on me are: During the betas, when hardware fails (like my system drive), or when I'm playing World of Warcraft.
Windows 95/98/98SE/ME though...that's another story. - diggfinity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@Cablito: "If you actually run an anti-virus, you are more likelly to catch a virus."
Can you back that up? - regeya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you're not writing drivers but are writing hardware interfaces, whiskey tango foxtrot, over?
The mere fact it's possible for you to have written "hardware interfaces" in userland for Windows over the last 10 years makes me dislike Windows more. - netdawg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4So you must have started programming when you were two then.
- Sparticuz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My vista business edition blue screened once, during a driver install. All it was was a blue screen, no text or anything. Then it shutdown and restarted and told me that I just had a Blue Screen, and then it wanted me to report it.
- compucomp2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Um... spyware is not the only cause of BSODs. Poorly written drivers or bugged antivirus/firewall programs can also cause BSODs, which was why I was getting them for a while.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm surprised they didn't include the NY Times Square BSOD:

- grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2... speaking of whom,
Sysinternals used to have a BSOD-restart screensaver which was good for a laugh.
Good to see MS has a bit of a sense of humour and you can still download it.
(http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Miscellaneous/BlueScreen.mspx) - TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -11/+13calm down, this isn't Windows specific
- Tippis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Guru meditation was the best crashes ever!
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You will get a BSOD on NT if you run out of real *and* virtual memory. You have a nice hardware problem. Enjoy!!
- kd1s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've seen BSOD's on ATM's, info portals, etc. Always amusing.

"Than again, most intelligent people don't."
Ladies, can you believe this clever, witty guy is still single?? - Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The only time I ever get that screen anymore is every time I'm uninstalling AOL from my computer (when I re-install everything from using recovery discs, AOL is automatically installed).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ive got the BSOD in vista, and its actually blue. has only happened when running vmware
- steelmaverick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Heh, well, XP does bsod, but just less often. It doesn't throw up its hands like 98 would and give up, it kinda tries to maintain stability. If it does crash, its set to automatically restart. You can also disable that automatic restart if you fancy seeing a bsod.

- ingxia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the mac version was commonly known as "the four languages"
- jordandiggsit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What is a blue screen of death? Must be a PC thing because neither me nor my MAC know what you guys are talking about...
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1^That messed up link just goes to Schrodinger's bio page:
"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schr%C3%B6dinger's_cat" - grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My network card doesn't understand them either.
Anyway, most PC users have never seen this:

- jordandiggsit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, I will not tell you anything. Thumbs Down to you, Mr. Gates.
- regeya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Cablito:
Buying off the shelf, even in these days where shrinkwrap software is read-only by design, is still no guarantee. And one of these days you WILL be bitten in the ass by problems.
I went through several years of having few if any problems; now, it seems that even when I buy good power supplies, decent memory, etc. and even run an OS that's fairly crash-proof by design, I can still manage to pull off a problem.
I find your claims of "no bluescreen and no AV and I've got no problems just don't be an idiot lol" to be dubious at best. - alexiscaptive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple death screen just can not express the bad felling
of a system freeze situation like this aweasome blue distorted one:
